This was a new author for me. This book is told from the husbands and the wife’s point of view! I found it interesting and I liked the story
I was really looking forward to reading this book, but unfortunately it did not tickle my fancy. I found the plot to be rather hard to following and un-interesting. The writing, however, flowed well. At this time, I cannot recommend this read, but I may give it another try in the future. Thank you for the opportunity to review it,
The plot of this thriller is well-written with plenty of twists and complications to keep you mildly interested. However, none of the characters is likable. Natalie, the mother who is a criminal lawyer, is conniving and manipulative. Will, the dad who is a trust and estates lawyer, is weak and disloyal. Charlie, their son, is portrayed as more childish than perhaps his age should be. Robert, the principal, is just totally unlikable with more and more of his actions revealed. And the investigating detectives, although they try to do their jobs, are not very loyal to their oath of office. So, all in all, the book was a good read that kept me thoroughly interested, but when I got to the end of the book, I did not sympathize with any of the characters. The big twist at the end was in the epilogue and not totally unexpected given Natalie’s character. I think that fans of Margot Hunt will enjoy this book but may be disappointed by the lack of depth in the characters and the lack of originality in the plot.
The writing is solid and the plot moves along at a good pace, but I didn’t find either of the main characters to be very likable. I was hoping for a stronger sense of suspense though and the ending was more than a little far-fetched but overall it was a very readable book.
FOR BETTER AND WORSE by Margot Hunt is a great suspense novel. This is the first novel of Hunt's book that I have read and I can't wait to read more of her novels.
The premise is enticing : Could a set of married intelligent layers get away with murder ?
After their child has been victimized ( more mentally than physically ) Nat and Will cross the line and the reader is about to find out.
Once again there is a weak male character and a superiorly strong female character. The book alternates from both Nat and Will POV.
Even though, both actors make many mistakes in the aftermath of their act, making the reader wonder about their intelligence, even though
the mystery is non existant, the easy going writing style keeps one reading to find out if the couple does or doesn't get away with murder.
With getting close to the end of the book comes the clear realization that a climax simply cannot happen, the story is a train wreck , and in a swift few lines the writer folds the whole story in a sudden, strange, unrealistic (almost idiotic) way.
The only social question raised by the book is the justification for vigilantes or self-served justice ? one can argue yes if the crime is terrible enough ( to each to define what the ’enough’ is ) but most would argue no as we do have a police force and laws to keep all citizen equals ( or trying to ).
The read wasn’t that bad but the ending was terrible. A lot of error will need to be caught before publishing.
Thank you to HARLEQUIN - MIRA ( USA and Canada) for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a good one. I like the back and forth point of views. Very enjoyable and the plot kept me going and I couldn't wait to see how it ended. Seems like there could be another book?! ! I received a free copy for my review and here it is! Get it, read it, like it!
Holy cow!!! This book!!! It kept me on the edge of my seat not knowing what was coming next. And the ending??? Hmmm I’m thinking a sequel could come from that?? 5 stars!! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this book. It’s a doozy!!!!! 5 stars!!
Nat and Will are happily married with a son, Charlie - until their lives fall apart when they find out that Charlie has allegedly been molested by a trusted friend/school principal. Nat knows the justice system well as an attorney and feels that justice will never be served, so she takes the law into her own hands. Will finds out and is frantic that the secret will be discovered and their family will indeed by ripped apart.
This novel was a great read - fast paced, gripping and emotional. It asks the question, "is vigilante justice ever acceptable'?
Thank you to Margot Hunt, Harlequin and NetGalley for the ARC of this book!
I really enjoyed the way this book played out. I am so used to stories like this revolving around the police and their lack of ability to convict the "bad guy." I liked that it switched between husband and wives perspectives so you could understand both of their feelings on the situation, however, I found it a little difficult to follow at some points who was the narrator.
Overall I really liked this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat wondering if they were going to get caught, or what was going to happen. I felt it ended a bit abruptly, but other than that I highly recommend For Better and Worse.
I received an advanced copy in exchange of an honest review.
Side Note: I much prefer the new cover to the old one.
I loved Margot Hunt's first book but sadly found this one disappointing and didn't finish it . Not for me !
This book starts from the wife's point of view, switches to the husband's, then goes back to the wife's.... when you take your wedding vows, do you ever stop to consider that "for better or worse" could involve murder? When a couples son is allegedly molested by a trusted family friend/elementary school principal, the couple takes matters into their own hands. I do not want to give too much away, but I think the couple did what many other parents in their situation would fantasize about.... harming the man who harmed their precious son. Throw in a husband in the midst of an illicit extramarital affair, a wife who is a criminal defense attorney, a paroled felon who can incriminate said defense attorney, and a gaggle or gossipy school mothers, you have yourself an incredibly interesting novel-- one I had a hard time putting down. My only complaint is that the couple seemed to get off a little TOO easily in the end... yet I strangely wasn't disappointed with how nicely the ends were tied up. This was definitely a hit in my opinion, one that I think will appeal to a wide audience. Cannot wait to read the next book by Margot Hunt. 4&1/2 stars.
Reading this book was very emotional for me. I have only cried while reading three books in my life, and this was one of them.
I think Hunt did an excellent job drawing the reader in and making them feel the pain and heartbreak this family is going through. I too have a young son so it definitely caused a lot of sadness and anger imagining him hurt in this way, and upset that there are real children victimized like this. I did not think the vigilante justice was far-fetched at all, and in fact think it is what a lot of parents would resort to in a trauma like that. My biggest criticism would be the ending (I don't want to say anything in case of spoilers) but perhaps the ending is just more of a commentary on human nature/desires, instead of wrapping everything up perfectly and neatly?
A tough, heartbreaking book to read, but I could not put it down all weekend until I finished it. Very well-written and very raw and real.
Natalie and Will Clark met in law school and have a son, Charlie, whom they adore. But when the principal of Charlie's school is accused of molesting another boy at the school and Charlie admits that the same has happened to him, their lives are turned upside down. Natalie, furious and focused on revenge, takes matters into her own hands but her carefully laid plan goes awry and she is forced to involve Will. Will, who is having an affair with another attorney in his office. When it's all said and done, they are left to holding their breath, wondering if they will get caught. Natalie tries to remain focused on the stability of her son and Will is barely holding it together when everything starts to unravel. Detectives investigating the case are suspicious when Nat and Will refuse to let Charlie be questioned, a repeat offender of Natalie's decides to use his personal knowledge to his benefit, Will's new companion shares a bit of damaging information, and it's only a matter of time before things come to a head. Fast paced and emotionally charged, I literally read this in one sitting. Vigilante justice at its edge-of-your-seat best!
I got about a 1/3 of the way through this book and it just lost me. I wanted to jump to the end rather than finish reading.
This is definitely a controversial topic these days, an elementary/middle school principal being accused of sexual advances towards students. Unfortunately it is a topic that is all too real however in many districts. Hunt explored the initial topic wonderfully but then the story took a tragic turn when the parents decide to take matters into their own hands. This is where it became not real for me and lost me.
Just wasn't my type of book unfortunately
Unfortunately, For Better and Worse did not work for me AT ALL. I can’t ever imagine being in Natalie and Will’s shoes finding out an authority figure has abused your child, however, this book plays into the acceptance of vigilante justice and is a bit much in this sense. I didn’t really feel the suspense here, just the play out of a crime, which lost my interest. The writing is good but the story was not for me. I loved Hunt’s first, Best Friends Forever, so I am definitely not writing her off, but sadly this one didn’t have the same wow factor for me - however, seems like many others are loving it! Try it, you may feel differently!
For Better for Worse makes you think how far would you go to protect your children?
Natalie & Will are both lawyers who on their very first date joked about being able to plan the perfect murder and get away with it, hypothetical?
Fast forward 15 years and Nat & Will’s marriage is going through a “stale” patch when they discover the Principal of the local school and family friend, where their son attends has been accused of abusing one of his pupils. When Nat speaks to her son, Charlie about it, she soon learns that Charlie was also a victim of this suspected paedophile. Nat sees red, she can’t control her rage and she has one thing on her mind, she will not let Charlie report the crime as she is a criminal defense lawyer and she knows what he would go through and she wants to protect him from that but to do the unthinkable instead? She plans to murder the principal and all going well…..get away with it. She has planned every last detail but since when to do things go the way they should and she ends up calling Will for help.
This story will make every parent question what they would do in these circumstances, is vigilante justice the answer?
This story is fast paced, I read it in the day, I couldn’t put it down, I was completely immersed in the plot line about such a delicate matter.
I would like to thank Netgalley, Harlequin and Margot Hunt for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
I enjoyed this book - the plot was a little far fetched, but still good. The characters were easy to relate to. I read this book in 2 days, definitely a page turner. Thanks!!
For Better and Worse by Margot Hunt, this book covers a hard subject, pedophilia to read about but read it I did. For better and worse takes you on a journey with one family whose son has been targeted by a pedophile and the lengths the parents go to to get revenge. This wasn't a thriller but it is full of suspense and twists and turns making it a very good read. Thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for allowing me to read this ARC book and give my own personal opinion.
For Better and Worse is a fresh take on the revenge story. The subject matter is very serious but Margot Hunt manages to develop a complex story that finds a way to keep you guessing. I enjoyed this story and will definitely be looking for other offerings from this author.
