SPOILER ALERT:
The writing was well done, but the main characters are unbelievable. It took me quite awhile to decide to write this review because it’s negative. However, it was a huge leap for me to believe that mom is suddenly a sociopath because the administrator of her son’s school is revealed to be a sex offender. Yes, her son is one of the children who was involved, and the legal implications of all that this would involve for a child are well delineated, but murder?...
Would a parent want to kill someone who harmed our child- even ‘just’ touching? Possibly. Would a parent actually do it? Not likely.
I couldn't get into it. The story was at best ok but i didn't really care for the characters. I barely got through it but i didm. I won't discount this author in the futue but this one just didn't do anything for me.
Margo Hunt captured our attention with the first book we read "Best Friends Forever", one of the best thrillers we read in 2017! We knew this title was coming out in 2018 and we couldn't wait to read and review it! Just as we suspected, she has delivered another outstanding edge-of-your-seat thriller that will not disappoint! Nat and Will, together since law school, are married with an 11 year old boy. Unlike their earlier inseparable days, Nat's OCD ways of organizing each moment of their lives may have created a rift between her and Will. It consumes her thoughts especially since Will always has his phone locked and is constantly looking at it. But none of that matters when they both find out what happened to a boy at Charlie's school...and Charlie! Cool as a cucumber, Nat has a plan to solve everyone's problem. Will wants no part of it but doesn't really have a choice because mama bear protecting baby cub is no match for anyone! But, what price is she willing to pay? How will her solution work for all her problems across the board? Hmmm..... No spoilers...this book will definitely have you turning pages fast! I absolutely LOVE this author's writing style, highly relatable characters, twisty and thrilling plots, and endings that will leave you gasping! 5 HUGE stars for Margot Hunt! We are most definitely Forever fans!
I have had this book on my Kindle for a couple of months now. I have only just gotten around to reading it and I am glad I did.
Whilst Will and Natalie were in law school and just starting out in their relationship together, they joking spoke about how to commit a perfect murder. Neither of the two thought they would ever be in a situation that would see them killing a man who had abused their 11 year old son.
Will they succeed in doing what they spoke about all those years before? Or is there no such thing as the perfect murder?
For Better and Worse is a hit. It made me contemplate what I would do if I found myself in this situation. This is my first book to read by Margot Hunt and I must say I am a fan. I was glued to this book and couldn’t wait to pick it up each night.
This book is completely insane in all the best ways. When I was about 15% in, I changed my Christmas present idea for my one mystery-loving friend (she is going to love this and I can't wait for her reaction texts) and I was also relaying the plot to a coworker like they were real people I knew. (We were discussing early events as we were walking in; I gave her an update after my lunch break.)
You won't know where this is going. And you also will begrudge everything that takes you away from the story.
Highly recommended.
For Better and Worse by Margot Hunt published by HARLEQUIN - MIRA (U.S. and Canada). I want to start this off by saying thank you to Margot Hunt Harlequin and Netgalley for giving me a chance to read this book. This is my first read by this author and I am intrigued enough to want to read and see more. Two lawyers the perfect couple or perfect partner in crime? Natalie and Will a very interesting couple. The opening of the book is a first date where they talk about getting away with murder. After so many years of marriage they get to put that conversation to the test. Til Jail do us part or Happily ever after? "Some people just need killing" A completely true statement where it comes to this book. Natalie and Will the perfect couple doing everything to protect their son. The Clarkes have the worst situation on their hands that any parents would never want to have. Their son's principal and friend of the Clarke's has been accused of molesting a young boy at the elementary school. One day Natalie is talking with her son Jacob and he drops an awful bomb of being molested by the principal Robert as well. Talk about ATROCIOUS! The book takes you on a ride of the planning and execution of the perfect murder and you the reader are on the edge of your seat hoping they get away with it or hoping only one goes to jail. I enjoyed this read. I was just hoping for it to pack a bigger punch. Overall a strong three star read.
This novel is filled with what ifs. What if your son was the victim of a predator? What if you could get revenge? What if you could get away with murder? Would you do it and take the law into your own hands?
I loved the concept of this novel. Could you and your spouse pull off the perfect murder? This had everything in place to be a perfect novel. However, it feel short with the characters.
Will and Natalie were not likable at all. Natalie was a know it all and wanted to keep up with a perfect image. If something didn’t fit into her life, she would sweep it aside and pretend that nothing was happening. Will was the opposite of Natalie. He doesn’t have a backbone and was falling apart when something didn’t go right.
If the blurb sounds interesting to you, pick it up! Once I started reading it, I just had to finish it even unlikeable characters and all!
Vigilante justice and the perfect murder. Except it's not so perfect. What the blurb doesn't give away on the who and why of this one is answered pretty quickly, so there's no suspense on that angle. The suspense here lays in whether or not Will and Nat will get away with it. On an emotional level, any parent can understand and even empathize with this couple's actions - the need to protect our children from harm and the anger and despair when we can't. So, while that part certainly tugs at the heartstrings, I still couldn't find anything likable about this couple other than their love for their son. Natalie is almost robotic as she goes through the motions of life. She's cold and calculating with everyone except Charlie. Will is the more human of the pair, but he's also weak to the point of being spineless. This story does have its moments. There are some truly brilliant scenes, including some that had me on the edge of my seat. The problem is that they are too far and few between. What should've been a steadily rising tension is stilted with too much lag time in the story. We do get a couple of interesting twists, and I did want to see how it came together. So, in the end, there were things I liked and things I didn't, leaving me somewhere in the middle on this one.
Thank you Mira Books and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book - all opinions are my own.
This book is a master class on high tension suspense mystery. I literally could not stop reading this book, I flew through the pages desperate to see what would happen. It was a high anxiety every single page, and I LOVED it.
Margot Hunt knows exactly how to write characters that are just a little bit despicable, but somehow I found myself rooting for them to get away with their crimes and lies page after page. I love good flawed characters and this book is jam packed with them. I also love how she posed the question through each of her lead characters about how far exactly you would go to protect your child - consequences be damned. And even more fun, is there such thing as committing the perfect, untraceable murder.
This book deserves no spoilers, but trust me when I say, this is one you want to read if you love a high stakes suspense that will have you anxious to the very last page.
This ended up being a DNF for me. It didn't go into the direction that I was expecting it to go. I didn't like either parent and I couldn't root for either of them. The decisions that they made just weren't realistic.
For Better and Worse is a psychological thriller about a marriage and a murder. On their first date, Will and Natalie joked they were smart enough to plan and get away with a murder. After something terrible happens to their son, Natalie decides to test that theory and Will unwilling joins her. Will also has a big secret he has been keeping from Natalie, one which might cause them to get caught. Will they get away with the murder? Will their marriage survive?
This was a page turner for me. I was hooked the moment I started reading. I loved the two different points of view, both Natalie and Will, and it flowed seamlessly between them. I loved the character development - they were realistic and I believed in them. I wasn't quite cheering for them, because they committed a murder after all, but I could understand their reasonings and emotions. The ending was incredibly shocking and I thought it was perfect for this story.
The beginning really drew me in but as the story progressed I lost interest.
The idea is great, what would be the perfect way to get away with murdering someone and would a lawyer have the best knowledge to do so, but the execution was not done in a believable way.
By the end I was really not interested but a friend encouraged me to read it. I’m glad I finished the book, but honestly the best parts for me were the prologue and the epilogue.
Overall I give it 3 stars. It was okay, and if might have been more up my alley if I read it at a different time, but for the most part I didn’t like the characters or the plot twists and so it was just an okay read.
On their first date back in law school, Natalie and Will Clarke bonded over drinks, dinner and whether they could get away with murder. Now married, they’ll put the latter to the test when an unchecked danger in their community places their son in jeopardy. Working as a criminal defense attorney, Nat refuses to rely on the broken legal system to keep her family safe. She knows that if you want justice…you have to get it yourself.
Shocked to discover Nat’s taken matters into her own hands, Will has no choice but to dirty his, also. His family is in way too deep to back down now. He’s just not sure he recognizes the woman he married. Nat’s always been fiercely protective, but never this ruthless or calculating. With the police poking holes in their airtight plan, what will be the first to fall apart: their scandalous secret—or their marriage
My Thoughts
Sorry I didn't post this when it came out had a really bad margin.
Rating:4 stars
While it's slow going in to the story ,it does pick up the more you read, at times I felt sorry for the husband because of how his wife acted but then I remembered he also has a secret that his keeping, but I do have to say that though out the story you see how much they love their son and how far their willingly to go to protect him. With that said I would like to thank Netgalley and Harlequin for letting me read and review it in change for my honest opinion.
Natalie and Will are now married lawyers, but their first date was spent discussing whether they could get away with murder. Years later, their son is put in harms way, and they find themselves questioning once again if they could get away with murder.
Nat is a criminal defense attorney and knows first hand how broken the justice system can be, and she refuses to wait for it to do its job. She takes getting justice into her own hands.
…and now that Nat is making big moves, Will has to be a loyal husband and throw his hat into the ring, too. Even though he joins in, Will is conflicted and not sure he knows who Nat is anymore.
The police come knocking, and it’s unclear if Will and Nat’s tightly wound up secret, or their marriage, will fall apart first.
For Better and Worse is a tense and gripping thriller. I found Nat cold and calculating, while Will was less so but roped in due to the bonds of marriage and his loyalty to Nat. She becomes a vigilante, but she can’t do it completely on her own. She needs Will.
Margot Hunt does a wonderful job getting into the heads of these parents who will stop at nothing to protect and avenge their child. The topics addressed in this book are heavy and dark at times, but Hunt has a way of keeping it from feeling overwhelmingly serious, while also feeling authentic.
Overall, For Better and Worse is an engaging, well-plotted, and thoughtful thriller, and I’m already looking forward to my next book from Margot Hunt!
Thanks to Harlequin MIRA for the review copy. All opinions are my own.
I’d read and enjoyed this author’s previous book so was pleased to be approved for this, but have taken a while to get to it due to some over-enthusiastic requesting, and so had seen some mixed reviews but ended up enjoying it immensely, apart from feeling slightly let down by the ending.
Natalie and Will met at law school and on their first date had a smugly naive conversation about how they are clever enough to plan the perfect murder. Fifteen years later, they are both successful lawyers in a wealthy Florida town, have a happy 11 year old son, Charlie, but a marriage going stale. When their son’s school principal is accused of molesting a pupil, the gossipy community is outraged, but the Clarkes don’t believe their former friend could be guilty, until Charlie admits that he too was a victim. As a criminal defence attorney, Natalie knows the trauma inflicted on young witnesses, so hatches a plan to deal with the paedophile in her own way, but when it comes to it, committing the perfect murder is not as easy as it looks...
This was an intensely readable psychological thriller about a couple prepared to kill to protect their son, and raises the kind of “what would you do” questions that would be fun to debate in a book club. While it deals with the dread topic of child abuse, this is not really described so it’s not as dark as it sounds. I liked the shift in narrator mid way so we get both points of view, and the that it was told in the traditional first person past, rather than the present so prevalent in this genre at the moment. The conclusion was a bit disappointing, although I’m not sure what outcome I was hoping for. None of the characters were at all likeable but this was not a problem here as it left more possibilities open for the ending.
My thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. For Better and Worse is available now.
Will and Nat meet in college. They get married and have a son Charlie. Nat finds out her son has been molested by the principal of the school he attends. Nat wants to stop the principal so no other children will have this happen to them, but all she really wants is revenge.
This was interesting but for me a little hard to read just due to the subject matter.
How to get away with Murder! Or not?
loved it!This was a fast entertaining read that kept me engaged throughout... what would your reaction be if you were out on a first date and the topic of conversation was.... how to get away with murder? Well if I’m being honest I would probably be a little intrigued with the conversation, but never thinking it would ever come to fruition.... I don’t believe Will did either, but Natalie had other plans....
Such an intense story that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout... more than 10 years after the afore mentioned date Will and Natalie are married with a young son Charlie.... both are successful lawyers Natalie is a defense attorney and Will is a real estate lawyer... they have a good life although they both take one another for granted.... Natalie is pretty controlling and Will could grow a pair... although I have to admit as an outsider the argument they had over the whiteboard calendar was quite humorous! So what will this couple do when they find out someone has done the unthinkable to their child? And what will Will do when he finds out that Natalie has taken things into her own hands? Is murder ever justified?
This book definitely gave you a lot to think about... what would you do if you were put in this couple’s situation? What if somebody did the unthinkable to your child? I don’t think I could ever kill anybody, but if I could it would be because somebody hurt one of my kids... didn’t even really like Natalie or Will, but I sure wanted them to get away with this! My one little niggle with this book was the very stupid mistakes Natalie made in both the planning and execution of this crime.... seriously she is a defense attorney and my only knowledge of the law is from TV shows like Law and Order... and I knew better than her when it came to some of these little mistakes, maybe she needs to get out of the courtroom and turn on the TV! however this did add to the tension of the story, the entire time all you could think was, are they going to get away with this or not? And should they?
An enticing story that will keep you glued to those pages! And the ending... both satisfying and surprising! And a apologue that made me gasp, but just confirmed something I already figured out!
Absolutely recommend this is a quick addictive escape of a story!
*** Big thanks to Harlequin for my copy of this book ***
Natalie and Will meet in law school, marry and have eleven-year-old Charlie when a family crisis threatens to break up their family in For Better and Worse.
Natalie is suspicious that Will is having an affair. He is criticizing her appearance and organizational skills constantly. Will has also lost weight and started working out. However, infidelity pales in comparison to their son’s revelation that his principal molested him. As a criminal defense attorney, Natalie knows how unfair the criminal justice system is to juvenile victims. She convinces Will their only option is to murder their son’s abuser without getting caught. Then things begin to spin out of Natalie’s control.
If you dislike unsympathetic narrators, For Better and Worse is not a good choice. By the conclusion, I disliked all the characters except the dog. Narration switches between the ultra-organized Natalie and her self-centered husband Will. While I raced through the first half in one anxious swoop, the conclusion seemed unbelievable and rushed. However, I adored the twist in the epilogue. For Better and Worse has the potential to be a series. If so, I would be interested to read the next in the series. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars!
Thanks to Mira Books and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
The term 'can't put it down' gets thrown around constantly, but I have to say it totally fits for this book. There was just the right mixture of action and tension and thought-provoking questions to make this an excellent thriller. The ending was a surprise - and leaves the reader wondering what will happen next!
