The Warrior Queen by Emily R. King is the fourth and final novel in The Hundredth Queen series and is a commanding and action packed finale to this riveting desert fantasy full of adventure, danger and thrilling romance.
Former Kindred Kalinda has helped bring peace to the Tarachand Empire. The Bhuta’s are no longer forced to hide their abilities and the rebels have been banished. Prince Ashwin sits on the throne as the Empire’s rightful leader with a peaceful and prosperous vision for Tarachand’s future. Only Kalinda’s heart is still broken, for the love of her life remains trapped in the underworld and though his soul visits her through the shadows each night, each day he loses more of himself. Determined to find a way to rescue Deven, Kalinda sets out to convince a god to guide her through the Void. Yet journeying where no mortal is meant to go, Kalinda faces incredible dangers and neither she nor Deven are guaranteed to make it out of the Void alive…..
Emily R. King’s Hundredth Queen series has been a delightfully woven story of action, adventure and forbidden romance mixed with unique mythology and culture. Bringing to a close the series, The Warrior Queen is once again riveting in its storyline, stakes and romance. I’m honestly a big fan of this world that King has created; it’s full of life and addictive; featuring multi-dimensional characters and a forward moving storyline.
I’ve really enjoyed following Kalinda in this series; she’s come such a tremendously long way and I think Emily R. King has detailed her journey wonderfully. She’s experienced loss and pain throughout the whole series but also found so much happiness, friendship and love. Kalinda’s voice has always been strong and determined and I felt King complemented that perfectly in this final instalment where Ashwin and Deven also featured prominently. Seeing things through their eyes allowed for a well-rounded story but also helped us see how far they’d come too; especially Ashwin who was a sheltered boy when we first met him and who has grown into a capable and commanding leader.
Even though this is the final novel, there’s still a lot happening within it and we’re also allowed a glimpse into a whole new branch of the world with the Void. Desolate, brutal and painful, this land was its own kind of torture and hell. King puts her characters to one final test in this series as Kalinda fights for her love and Ashwin fights those what would stand against his new ideas and plans for Tarachand—it makes for exciting reading as the novel progresses.
Emily R. King has created an addictive desert fantasy series with The Hundredth Queen; one I highly recommend and would definitely revisit sometime in the future. I’ve loved following Kalinda and all her friends and will keep an eye out for King in the future to see how she follows up this wonderful debut series!
Phenomenal! Perfect ending to a great series. This entire series had me so engulfed, I felt as though I was a part the the empire. I can't wait to read more from Emily R. King.
In complete transparency, I haven't read the first three books in this series because I didn't realize it was the end of series when I requested it. Because of this I don't know if my feeling about this book are mixed because I haven't been following the characters on their journey so I didn't have a strong connection to them or the world that was created. I didn't love the writing style and the plot felt a little meh to me. None of the characters or their stories stood out to me and I felt like the story was slow. It doesn't motivate me to read the rest of the series unfortunately but might be better suited to readers who have read the previous 3 books in the series. Definitely not a standalone read. 2.5/3 stars for me.
DNF.
It's such a bad book. The cultural appropriation is obvious and blatant: despite the author stating that nothing, expect for the religion of one group of people, is inspired by real ethnicities, it's clear and kinda "in your face" that she basically lumped the indian subcontinent's cultures and choose and pick what she wanted.
The writing is stilted and abundant of overly short sentences (girl, you're not Hemingway), and sometimes it gives you the impression that the thesaurus was abused.
It's a no for me.
Warrior Queen was by far my favorite book in the series. I loved the different point of views and how the world doesn’t change over night. It was a great read seeing what would happen to everyone as they faced their challenges. It kept a really smooth pace even moving between the world and conflicts.
I absolutely fell in love with this wonderful series by Emily R. King. It just reminds me so much of The Wrath and the Dawn that I just can't help but want to read everything I can. The world Emily created is so beautiful, I truly wanted to know more about it. Kalinda is a one of a kind character who has no problem being badass in every way. This is probably my favorite book in the series. And I'm so thankful to be able to read it ahead of publication.
The Warrior Queen is the stunning conclusion to The Hundredth Queen Series. I was so uncomfortable with the claiming scene in The Hundredth Queen that I almost didn't continue the series when I first started reading the books. However, I'm glad I did because Kalinda's journey is empowering and powerful and one that many of us need to hear. In book 4, we find Kalinda trying to move forward after the battle with Udug in book 3. Determined to find her love Deven who was lost in the battle, Kalinda seeks out the assistance of the fire god to help her navigate the underworld and bring her beloved back. Along the way, Kalinda learns more about who she is and the origin of her powers. Meanwhile, Prince Ashwin and the rest of Kalinda's friends must work together to save Tacharind from those who would wish to overthrow the new leader. A thrilling adventure from beginning to end, you won't be able to put this book down. It was my favorite book in the whole series.
I actually enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I said at the end of the last book I didn't see the point for this book, but it was good to see the rebuilding of the empire.
I liked Kali in this book, but Ashwin got on my nerves. I also thought the order of the chapters was a little off. There were times when I wanted a certain pov but it didn't come.
I also thought some of the solutions came to easily, especially with Tinley and Ashwin at the end, as well as Kalinda's journey. There were inconsistencies with Enlil's battle as well. How did the public see inside the palace? And the Cala/Inanna/Kali/Deven/Enlil thing got a little confusing as well.
Nevertheless, this was a solid end to the series and I did enjoy it. A good light fantasy read if you're looking for something that isn't as involved as other full-on series.
I can't say enough good things about this series! Fantastic, strong female characters, a wonderfully creative realm, and a page-turning story line will keep readers entranced to the very end. I can't wait to add these books to our library collection and start recommending them to readers. For fans of Cinda Williams Chima, Mercedes Lackey, and Holly Black, this series will not disappoint.
I can't say enough good things about this series! I have read it from the beginning and felt so immersed into the beautiful world King has created for us. I loved the magic system and how Kalinda perseveres as a strong MC even as she is learning and growing as a character.
I have recommended The Hundredth Queen to so many people and I feel like this series deserves more attention. For me it is a favorite and always will be. I felt so connected to Kalinda and was cheering for her in every book.
I was so sad this series is at the end. This book was a beautiful ending to a phenomenal series rich in culture and magic and war. This was my first series from Emily R. King but most definitely not my last.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an eARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
i love how the book corporates indian mythology and reincarnation.its not easy getting those right.loved the story plot, but was a little bit of a slow read.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion from netgalley.
I’m torn on this book. I loved the series and am happy we got a happy ending. I’m disappointed in the character development and their relationships. It feels like Mary Poppins wrote the book, snap - it’s all solved.
I love Ashwin, I’m happy he found his happily ever after but his great foe was basically a plot device. I wish there was more conflict between him, kali, and Devon. Heck for that matter I wish there was conflict in the new love triangle. It felt almost like a cop out for what was such a colorfully built world. Basically, this book could have taken any of our characters journeys and made it into its own book, only, it didn’t. They were all stuffed together with not enough space so nobody really shined.
Read to complete the series but don’t have high hopes for a epic ending.
I enjoyed it but o was sometimes bored with it. It felt a little too slow moving for me and I couldn’t connect with the characters.
This was a fantastic finish to the series! I was wondering how the story was going to continue after The Rogue Queen but it was a great spin. I really enjoyed how we are able to see the culture a little more. I found the culture/religion created for this world beautiful. In The Warrior Queen, we get more of this which enriches the story greatly. I found the beginning to be a little slower than the previous books but still held my interest. It feels slower because in the other books we got a lot of action. The action didn't come in until the end. However, the action scenes we're literally something you would have seen in Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was fantastically done!
The characters were flawless as always. Kalinda really exceeded my expectations this book. She had so much soul searching, literally, to do. I love how she overcomes every problem that she encounters without ever compromising her beliefs. This book we get to read from Ashwin's point of view which I really enjoyed! I already loved his character and this just proved he belonged in this world. We also got more Tinley and Gemi which was great! The only thing I was a little disappointed in was the amount of sister warriors. After The Rogue Queen I thought we would see more from them than what we did. However, I love their new role at the end of the book. I was very impressed with the development of each character.
I absolutely loved this book, but I am so glad it had a happy ending. A must read thriller. I loved how they were always meant for each other!!!
The final book in the Hundredth Queen series! I'm sad it's completed and we won't get any more books in this beautiful world!
I really liked this final installment! We get 3 different points of view, which wouldn't have worked for book one, but works fantastically for book 4! I loved getting a glimpse into the lives and worlds of the gods and demons.
Overall, a nice, satisfying conclusion for these wonderful characters!
ThecWarrior Queen was a great conclusion to an amazing series!! It was full of action and adventure. I enjoyed it!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
I normally do not like a book that had more than one POV, however, if the author is talented such as Ms. Emily R King, then it doesn’t really bother me. I am most of said that this series is over, but I cannot wait to see what she brings forth in the future! Anddd that cover! Every single cover in this series has surpassed the previous one and I was not disappointed with this last one!
Every book that she writes is so highly developed and full of characters that are intricately complicated! Very few authors can build worlds such as Ms. King and I’m honored that I got to review this last title in this fantastic series.
Kalinda finds that it is hard to please everyone and still be true to yourself! This book finds her trying to save her love from the Void even though he sacrificed himself to save her in the first place! Along the way, Kali finds Enlil to make a deal with but once inside the Void, she discovers who she really is. Can she face her past lives, or will she let them destroy her? I really liked the growth that Kali found in this novel and how her circumstances play out.
Ashwin’s tale fills most of the rest of the book. His people are at an unrest and his army is defecting in droves because they cannot trust him, Lies and fear that he will rule his people like his father seem to poison their minds against him. Ashwin’s tale is fraught with danger and espionage! How can he overcome turmoil from within?
I would highly recommend this novel and the entire series to anyone who has not read it and loves a great YA series! The series is packed with romance, action, and never a dull moment! The author spins a wonderful web of words that must be devoured! I cannot believe the series is over!!!
Noteworthy experiences while reading this book: Best book yet!
Check out author's other books? YES YES YES
Recommend this book? YESSSSS!!!
Notes and Opinions: When we were approved to read this one I about died!! I have loved this series since it started and I wish it wasn't ending. This journey with Kalinda is one of the best that I have read! This was a perfect ending to her story and I would love to have more stories set in this world. This one tells the tale of what you would do to save someone you love and how you can overcome your past and your heritage.
Kalinda has come so far since this series started and I am so sad to see her go. This book will leave you with all the bookish feels and I have to say that I cried my eyes out as it was ending. These are some characters I won't soon forget as they will be with me always.
If you are looking for an epic fantasy with magic, chracters, and a world so beautiful then check this one out!
