Brilliant book, excellent conclusion to the series. I loved the character development, the beautiful settings, the magic and the strong women kicking butt. Cannot recommend this book more highly!
Loved this book - an amazing end to the series.
Emily has managed to maintain Kali's independence and fiesty-soul whilst developing her loves!
The way the book has split off into strands is enjoyable and keeps you hooked, especially when reading from the POV of your favourite characters. A great end to a great series!
I received this novel from net galley and the publisher for an honest review. Thank you!!
I have read all the novels in this series and I was not disappointed in the conclusion of The Hundredth Queen series. Some people will do whatever is takes to save those they love, even at their own expense. Others need to make difficult choices, that many will protest against. This novel brings back several characters. The story is first person point of view, mostly Kalinda and Ashwin.
Kali decides to travel to the Void to save the life of the man she loves, Devon. Devon saved her from being taken into the Void by the demon Kur. Kali will learn many unexpected things about herself as travels with Enlil, a god whom she makes a deal with to guide her through the Void. When Kali discovers the truth, she must decide who she truly is and embrace her past lives.
Ashwin on the other-hand, it dealing with his people not wanting to allow bhutas into the city. There is much unrest and many of Ashwin's army are defecting to another who is spreading lies and rioting the people to his side through fear. Ashwin wants peace and to be a better ruler than his father. His viraji is a bhuta and some feel he should marry one of his father's ranis. However, Ashwin has his own mind and reasons as he grows into his new role. However, there is a spy in the mist. Kali and Ashwin both have their own battles to fight to prevent those on both sides of the Void from destroying the world.
I absolutely fell in love with The Hundredth Queen series by Emily R. King. It just has such a beautiful and intricate world, I dove right in and wanted to know more about it. It’s got incredible magic, hidden princes, badass ladies who kick a lot of ass and an absolutely swoony ship that had me going ‘just get your act together already’ for three books! But this one takes the cake! It is my favourite out of this quartet and that probably says something about me, because I’m pretty sure this one is the most emotionally brutal and also quite different from the other ones. In The Warrior Queen, we sees bit of a different side to Kali she is grieving, and not just for the loss of the man she loves, but also, for the life she had literally fought for and suddenly it’s all gone and the citizens despise her, not to mention she still feels the loss of her best friend. But the thing about this book, is that while it talks about loss and I really liked how it was done, it also talks about hope. We see that in how Kali just wouldn’t give up on rescuing Deven (even if part of that determination was brought by some desperate desire to not lose him as well), but also with Ashwin and how he handles being back at court after such a long time away, also his relationship with the princess was adorable. I just felt there were some parts in the middle of Kali’s journey that were more on the slow side, I still liked some plot twists, that I didn’t see coming, we learn along the way. Another thing this book talks about, is destiny and how sometimes people are always destined to meet (be it a romantic relationship or just friendship) and honestly I’m a sucker for that. This was definitely a wonderful ending to The Warrior Queen series and I’m without a doubt going to miss this world and the characters.
Ok, I’ll admit it – I was very slightly miffed that a fourth book appeared in this series when I thought it was a trilogy. However any feelings of ill usage evaporated when I read it – which is what I did last night since I couldn’t sleep. I’d intended just to read a few chapters and ended up mainlining the book. This series is one which has got better with each instalment. Kalinda is a dynamic though not always likeable MC and the plots and intrigues are just pure fantasy fun. Thoroughly enjoyable.
