Enjoyed this new series by Taylor Stevens and it starts off strong! Can’t wait to read the next one. Jill is kick-ass and like her other series, moves along at a fast pace
Dysfunctional family, kidnapping, fist fights and so much more is what you will encounter when reading this action packed thriller and that is just in the mother training her kids. This book will take you on one wild ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. This was a very unique premise that the author does an amazing job developing. I enjoyed every page and highly recommend it to all readers.
Thank you to the author Taylor Stevens, the publisher and NetGalley for giving me an ARC in exchange for my candid review.
Whew! I am exhausted from the reading marathon that I just pulled to finish reading this exciting book! Jack and Jill are twins, trained from age 6 to be able to handle any situation they could ever be involved in. And by any situation, I mean, a kidnapping, chasing or being chased by hitmen, torture, capture, crawling through wilderness, jungle, desert,..... I mean anything. The brother and sister are raised by a psychotically paranoid butt-kicking mother that has led then all over the world and who periodically disappears.
This has got to be one of the most twisty-turny, high octane, high adventure, page turning books that I have read in a long time. I LOVE this series!!!! Jack and Jill are epic and the perfect team. But their mother is epic!
The storyline is so exciting and thrlling and when you think that you understand what is going on---it throws another curve at you. I am rarely surprised at the end of a book, but this one did an excellent job at doing so.
I HIGHLY recommend this book! Read it before it becomes a movie!
I have in the past enjoyed Ms. Stevens' work, which is why I was quite surprised to find myself struggling to make it through Liars Paradox. From the beginning, I found it difficult to follow the characters and their development. The changes of locations, names, and situations was made even more confusing by the chapter headings in trying to keep all parties straight. It wasn't until almost the very end that I realized that two characters I had separate were actually one person, and that was my misunderstanding, not an intended plot twist.
I am glad I was able to finish this book because it did have an ending. And I hate feeling like a quitter when it comes to reading.
Two out of five stars. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC PDF.
Since this is the first book in The Jack and Jill Thriller set, I was expecting it to focus more on the characters, and I was disappointed. That is not to say that it wasn't an entertaining read, just that I thought the character portraits were a little shallow. I chalk that up to this being the first half of a two book set, and that the balance is off. The story itself is well conceived, the pacing is fast, and the story itself interesting enough to have me watching for book 2. I'm hoping that Ms Stevens is able to add more dimension and growth to the characters in book 2.
I received my copy through NetGalley under no obligation.
Jack and Jill are twins who were raised by a very paranoid mother, Clare. Clare had made it her priority to train her children in the art of survival. As a result both Jack and Jill are masters of combat, weaponry and in the art of espionage. But they were often pitted against each other and in addition were the mind games that Clare played with them. As a result, though Jack and Jill can work together, they lack the bonding that we usually see in twins. Now, they are all grown up and are trying to lead ‘normal’ lives separately… Yet when Clare’s safe house explodes and she is nowhere to be found, Jack and Jill will have to set their differences aside and work together; especially because it seems that wherever they turn to, someone wants them dead.
Jack and Jill are interesting protagonists. I have always wondered about nature vs nurture and here the ‘nurture’ provided by Clare was unconventional to say the least. The twins are as different from each other as they possibly could be yet their banter and squabbling throughout the book was entertaining for most parts. I kind of had a love hate relationship with the character of Clare because of the way she handled Jack and Jill. Once the plot unravels, the readers get to see where her paranoia was coming from, but I still wished that she had handled it differently. The kind of dysfunctional familial relationship portrayed through the book was bit disconcerting.
The book is not very plot driven as the plot outline is very simple. It is the characters and the action, even though it was sometimes a bit too exaggerated, that keeps the pages flying. Add in a bit of humour and you have a thriller that keeps you excited. However, a personal quirk of mine disrupted my reading experience of this book. While I do not mind a couple of slangs here and there to get the point through, I really had trouble with the overuse of it in the book. It kind of takes away the effect of using an f-word when it is used so copiously.
If you are looking for an action packed thriller, give this book a try.
Wow! This was one hell of an action-packed book!
Jack and Jill are twins, trained to be spies, since age five by none other than their mother, Clare. Throughout, the twins lives, their mother's crazy paranoia has driven them into gruesome training and survival instincts but all they really want now is a normal life. However, things are set in motion when, one of Clare's safe house is blown into pieces making them realize that may be their mother was right all along.
Like, I said this book is extremely action-packed, the writing is lucid with a well-constructed, fast-paced and even entertaining plot. There are a few things which seems a little over the top and may be a little un-realistic but if you are some one, who, loves a good spy story with lots of Bourne and Bond style conspiracy and chase with a mix of dysfunctional family drama, this book will not disappoint you.
As for me, I really liked both the female characters, Jill and Clare, they were sassy and brave. What I did not like was the the relationship between Jack and Jill, it was bordering a whole new level of toxic but seeing as how they grew up, I get where they came from. Overall, I could have done with a little more character development on all fronts but other than that, I thinks it was a great first book in the series.
I'm sad to say that I found it hard to get into this book and did not finish it. The dynamic between the brother and sister characters felt forced and over the top. I understand this sets up their relationship for the remainder of the book, but I just couldn't connect with it.
Lots of fun reading this book. Taylor Stevens always provides a satisfactory read.
Looking forward to her next book.
This book started out alright but ended up a little too disjointed for my taste. There's a lot of action, so much to the point that the character development got lost. A little too over the top for me.
Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Kensington and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Liars' Paradox. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Since they were small children, Clare has trained her children to be proficient with weapons, surveillance, and sabotage. Subjecting them to psychological games that were designed to toughen their bodies and minds, Clare's methods often pitted Jack and Jill against each other. When Clare goes missing just after calling her children home, will the twins be able to put aside their rivalry to get to the truth and find their mother?
Readers who are looking for a thriller long on action but short on plot and character development will love Liars' Paradox. This book takes sibling rivalry to a new level, as Jack and Jill fight each other both literally and figuratively. With so many trained assassins stalking their prey, there is not much time left for the plot to deepen and for the author to give the characters some needed depth. I did enjoy reading this novel, as it was a pure escapist thriller fiction and a very quick read. Readers who are looking for action will definitely find it in Liars' Paradox.
3.5 Huge fan of this authors past protagonist, the kick ass Vanessa Michael Monroe. Here she gives us a new series featuring two fearless females and a male thrown in for good measure. Claire, the nother, in her fifties is a force to be reckoned with, her past life hidden in the shadows. Jack and Jill, twins, trained harshly in survival since the age of five. This is a dysfunctional family for the ages, with possibly just a little psychopathic anger in the mix.
Adrenaline fueled, cat and mouse chases, betrayal, gun fights and let me say these women can definitely hold their own. An adventure packed page turner, with an ending that nicely, okay well nothing is nice about this book, so aptly sets the stage for book two. Even in the worst of families, family still means something, especially if you hold the answers they need.
ARC from Netgalley.
This is my first Taylor Stevens book and I can tell her writing is addictive. This book is non-stop from beginning to end. We get full on action with each chapter while learning about the characters. I don't mind multiple POVs and we get several here. However, the most we see is of Jack and Jill, our stars. Twins who were basically trained from birth with spy-like abilities for survival, they always considered their mother more of a mentor than anything else. They disregarded her paranoia but have to consider how right she may be when things go awry and they realize what they thought was another test is anything but.
The action did get a little over the top in certain areas. I would've liked to see some more character development... which is interesting as I felt this was still a more character driven book than a plot driven one. The first in a series can certainly be the build up to the upcoming books and in this case we get a full blown look at just how incredible these twins are. I certainly wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of them (or their mother). As twins and growing up being tested repeatedly in a variety of situations, this made for the continuous, crazy sibling rivalry that is thrown at you in virtually ever chapter. I still can't quite wrap my mind around the opening scene because if that was MY brother coming at me while I was in THAT situation.. well... WEIRD. (also maybe poor choice of words but I'm leaving it there)
Mainly this book is just fun. If you like action packed thrillers then this is definitely suitable for your tastes. While I felt things got a bit redundant and a bit out there, I think that we get exactly what the author wanted to put out there - crazy characters that are continuously on the run which makes for a lot of new adventures coming our way.
I'm VERY curious to see where this family goes.. and if the twins can survive EACH OTHER.
I have always enjoyed Taylor's books. They remind me a bit of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. I love her characters. This Jack and Jill book is is a rollercoaster thriller. Highly recommended.
Liars’ Paradox is a novel about siblings that at times are rivals as they compete for their mother’s attention. This is about old alliances and old enemies. It will keep you guessing until the end. I'm anxious to see where this new series goes.
First of all, there's something that had me stumped. It's the cover. The razor with blood and rust. I'm trying to comprehend how it ties in with the story here. The only thing that mentioned was a quote with the wording razor's edge. I thought maybe I had missed something so I reread it. Same confusement. I do like the cover. Creative.
Moving on....
Wow! Talk about a major disfunctional family especially between the twin brother and sister. Apparently the special bond doesn't even exist between them. You can practically taste the different flavors of hatred and bitterness. Especially when it rolled off the twin girl, Jill fast and furious; understandably so. Its mostly due to the way they were raised by their ever elusive mother. She had trained them to defend themselves 24/7 . They couldn't understand why but they do it for their mother's love. They believed that their mother didn't love them due to the fact she would drop them off at different parts of the world and be trained without hearing a word from her for days, weeks, months, even year.
The story alternates with the siblings, mother and other people who are involved in the twins' lives at the moment. The twins had thought their mother disillusioned until her hidden home was bombed after receiving a cryptic text from her. This is where their wild crazy ride begins. In order to find their mother, they need to set aside their jealousy, pettiness and differences aside to solve the mystery. In order to do that, they must go back into the past to get clues and hints as to who their mother really is and learn their real identities.
The story was a wild roller coaster ride. There were times I just wanted to slap Jill and tell her to grow up. There are some characters who got me confused at first where I had to go back and figure out where they came from.
It is a fast actioned mystery. Also it's a first book in a series. Basically, it's called Jack and Jill Thriller. The way it ended in this book led me to believe there will be another book after this one. I like the way the book started and ended with a bang.
For those of you guys who like mystery (think CIA, undercover, KCG, Broker, Berlin, Florida, contracts, murder for hire, and etc) and thriller, different emotions, and etc, then this book is for you. This book is a bit unique for a mystery/thriller.
I'm going to give this book a low 4 stars.
I received ARC from Kensington Corp through Net Galley and won a print from Good Reads. Thank you!
A thriller about assassins and bounties and spies….what’s not to like? This book contained a lot of action but didn’t have a lot going on in regards to plot and character development. From the start to finish, it felt like one long movie scene action sequence that just followed a linear path to the end. Surprisingly, halfway through this, I was slightly bored with it, despite all of the non-stop fighting and action. I feel like it lacked heart and was filled with filler, but there were parts of it that I did enjoy. The last 50 pages of the book were more promising and actually made me eager to read the next book in the series.
Liars' Paradox (A Jack and Jill Mystery #1) by Taylor Stevens is a good thriller read. I want to thank Netgalley and the author for my arc. I am sorry that my delay I loved the book I just had a hard time the last two months sitting down doing my reviews. Jack and Jill some cute names for twins. Although the relationship between them is anything but cute. We can picture the sweet darlings romping in the sunlight always with wide smiles on their faces.
Boy is that not the case in Liars' Paradox. These twins have been trained by their commando mother to endure pain, deprivation, fear, isolation, and loneliness. The book reads like 007 meets revenge and I loved every minute. I thought Claire their mother is an odd ball who I actually liked. It wraps up well and I look forward to seeing how the two continue in the second book.
Tried my best to stay with this long convoluted plot, but finally gave up after one too many trips around the barn. Just couldn't get interested in any of the characters. The author hides a good bit about them early going. However, when more is revealed, they don't get moreintersting.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Kensington Books, and Taylor Stevens for an excerpt of this book. My opinions are 100% my own and independent of receiving this excerpt.
Meet Jack. He busts into a room, grabs a woman off of her lover, throws her on his shoulders and into the trunk of his car. He has been trailing her. Is he a stalker? Jealous ex? Nope. When he releases her from the trunk, they go at it like Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Except these aren’t love interests. This is brother and sister. It is obvious that they have both been trained as assassins. Their “mom”, or the woman who trained them, needs to see them. When they approach her out-of-the-way home, it blows up in front of them. So the story begins.
So, you can get the idea that this is a mix of Kill Bill, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and any other famous trained assassin movie you can think of. It reads a little like those old gumshoe movies with the voice overs. From the excerpt it seems to have more violence and sex than those old movies would have shown. I’m not sure if it peaked my interest enough to go buy the book. I would have loved to have read the whole thing and give you a better idea of what it was like and see if I would have been interested enough to invest in the series, but I just didn’t get enough information from the excerpt to be able to tell. My fault for not reading the publisher’s note that the whole book was available to download at a later date. What I did read wasn’t enough to make me want to run out and buy it. There are just too many books in this world that I know I want to read first. That being said, it peaked my curiosity enough that if I come across it on sale, I’m interested enough to give the first book a try.
