People are being murdered with a surgical scalpel. Special Prosecutor Jana Berzelius is in charge of the investigation looking for this serial killer.
Are these random killings? Is there a connection between the victims? Jana finds an old case .. a patient was badly damaged during a surgery. The physician lost his license to practice. Now these murders are happening in the same medical community. Is there a connection? Revenge, maybe?
The Special Prosecutor finds that the death of her mother may be linked in some way. She has secrets of her own that she doesn't want to see the light of day.
It becomes a race to catch the killer before another victim is taken.
This was a slow starter with multiple characters vying for attention. it did pick up speed about halfway through the book. I'm glad I stuck with it, because it became really interesting and the suspense builds until the surprising ending.
Many thanks to the author / HarperCollins / Edelweiss / Harlequin-Mira / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Special Prosecutor Jana Berzalius' mother died of a heart attack while in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. At the same time she's involved in looking into a gruesome murder, soon turning into the hunt for a serial killer - 3 people are dead, all horribly mutilated. As if that isn't enough, her nemesis from the past has returned, blackmailing her into hiding him in her apartment.
When it appears one of the EMT's in Jana's mother's ambulance fell asleep on the trip to the hospital, possibly causing her death, he becomes the no.1 suspect in the killings...he knew and worked with all 3 victims.
All the major players in this book are flawed - that's what makes them so interesting, No-one more so than Jana, still suffering the effects of her atrocious childhood before her adoption. Although not good at relationships, she's excellent at her job, giving it her all.
I enjoyed this book a lot, it was quite gripping and my affection for Jana grew a lot. Looking forward to what's next for her!
