This book reminds me of home. I grew up in Puget Sound picking berries, swimming in the sea, and coming the beaches. I was also sent to grandmothers many summers. But I am an adult, and while this book is like a trip down memory lane, it's not one I would pick up to read at storytime. It’s a little long, and a bit boring. And while nostalgia is great for me, for a larger audience, I’m not sure it will pay as strongly.

I think that “Island in the Salish Sea” really could have benefitted from an afterward by the author. I wanted to know if this was based on the author’s life, and if not, what inspired it. I wanted to know more about the history of the location, too.

What a great book to read children when learning about Canada and different areas in the country. Using a young girl visiting her grandmother on an island in the Salish Sea, you will see how the people live, what the land is like, what types of animals and plants are found. This is also a great story to share between grandmothers and their grandchildren about spending a fun summer together. My grandson is only four, so he didn't appreciate this story as much as children 6 and up would. The illustrations are amazing. Each one looks like a watercolour that could be framed and hung on a wall. They are gorgeous. A great picture book for any library. T

Like a Summer's day, this is a lazy sort of book, though little pearls of wisdom are scattered inside.

A young girls visits her grandmother, and gets into island time. She enjoys the bounty around her, but her gran has to stop her from taking fossils and bits of harpoon from a midden heap. She says to leave things where they are, for all.

So, the next day, she takes her to a part of the island she can do a rubbing.

Beautifully illustrated, this book gives a view of life on an island, in the summer, in the Pacific Northwest. Quite enjoyable to look at.
