Wasn't quite sure what this book would be like, but was very pleased I gave it a try. Emily is a doctor in Chicago, when she gets a call that her father in Michigan has suffered a heart attack. Leaving her new fiance, and coming off a long shift, she drives the four hours back to see him. He is the local coroner, and when a 16 year old girl is found dead, he asks Emily to perform the autopsy. Her old boyfriend from high school, Nick, is now the town cop, and working together brings back feelings and they seem such a better fit than her rich fiance in Chicago. The mystery is well done, and the characters are interesting. Would highly recommend this book, and hope there are more to come.
Emily is a surgical resident in Chicago with the beginnings of a great career . It's her birthday and and she gets engaged to a very handsome, well bred surgeon. Life is good. Her father back home is the coroner. A calls comes in, her father has had a heart attack. She has to go back although she and her father are estranged. While there, a Senator's daughter dies from a fall from horseback. No one to do the autopsy so Emily does it. It was not an accident. An old flame is now the Sheriff and he helps Emily with the autopsy. Emily begins to see how much of her life is still left in this small town. Then she accidentally over hears something that may get her killed before she can have a life. A thrilling ride from the first. The author knows her stuff. Loved it. I received this book from Net Galley for an honest review.
I am hoping this is the first installment in a new series. Great characters, a plot with plenty of twists and turns, and a great small town setting will draw you right into the story.
I enjoyed this mystery and the ending defintiely left me wanting more answers .... another in the series? I hope so .... I think this has the potential to be a really good series as the characters grow and evolve.
Thank you #netgalley and #crookedlanebooks for the eARC.
I had mixed feelings about this book as it felt as it was a lot more cosy then I expected. The mystery was good and well told, although not a lot of it. I really did not appreciate the ending, I really dislike books that leave you hanging.
Emily Hartford is looking forward to cutting into people, live ones. She is also looking forward to planning her wedding with Brandon. Her plans changed when she received a call from her hometown informing her that her father has just suffered a major heart attack. After driving from Chicago to Freeport, she ends up running a red light and getting pulled over by the boy she left, Sheriff Nick Larson. Nick escorts her to the hospital to see her father, who just happens to be the town's medical examiner. Her father and Nick start talking about the death of Julie Dobson, teenage daughter of Senator Dobson. They both team up to have Emily perform the autopsy.
This story not only finds Emily looking for a killer, but trying to understand the secrets her father is keeping about her mother's death. The whole reason why she left town at 16 and hasn't returned since then. Can she repair her relationship with her father and will he finally tell her about her mother's death?
I enjoyed reading this book and thought the author did a good job of giving a glimpse into hoe Emily grew up to be the way she is. I liked the little flashbacks. I am hoping by the way the book ended (a little bit of a cliffhanger), there will be more books with Emily and Nick.
I received this book from NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books in exchange for an honest review.
A good story with good characters. This would be a great book for a start of a series but I felt it had too much of a cliffhanger for what I wanted from the story. That being said I enjoyed reading it.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Very good book. Emily a young doctor is called back to her hometown that she left twelve years ago after her father has a heart attack. The same day she got called home she just became engaged to Brandon, also a doctor. Emily's father Robert is a doctor and the medical examiner/coroner for the area. When Emily was thirteen years old she started helping her father with autopsies. She has been estranged from her father for years and they have to work on mending their relationship. Emily only plans to stay a short time, but then a teenage equestrian dies. Emily's father and the Sheriff, Nick (her high school boyfriend) talk her into doing the autopsy since her father is recuperating in the hospital. What they thought was an accidental death turns out to be murder, Emily starts helping Nick investigate. She reconnects with her old best friend. When Emily finds out her fiancé's mother is planning everything for their wedding and Brandon seems to want her to return to Chicago quicker than she can, plus he doesn't seem to want to come to her hometown, she starts to have second thoughts on many things. She also starts to think she may be happy to once again live in her hometown. The way the book ended makes me think their will possibly be a series made out of this story. I certainly hope so. I loved this book.
It is a big day for Emily Hartford a 3rd year surgical resident in Chicago. She has just successfully completed surgery; it is her birthday; and then her handsome, rich (naturally) boyfriend proposes. Oh, and then she gets a message that her father the medical examiner in a small town (Freeport) has suffered a heart attack. Following the death of her mother 10 years earlier, Emily has not returned, nor been in touch with her Father. But return she does. Quick summary: her old boyfriend is now the sheriff; her Father has remarried: and a teenager’s body, the daughter of a Senator, has been found – and requires an autopsy. It is Emily’s lucky day!
I had high hopes for the book. Think Patricia Cornwall or Silent Witness. Then in my opinion, think again. I was disappointed to say the least. I found Emily to be a pain. Everybody not only remembered her but they were falling over themselves to spend time with her. For the life of me I can’t quite see why. I am whispering this (because after all it is only me view) she was boring. So was her fiancée who had a serious problem with his mother’s interference in his life.
Sorry, sorry, sorry – but Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.
This is the first novel I have read by this author, and I will be looking for more. I really hope there are more books in what I hope is a Coroner series. Mainly because I didn't like how this book left us hanging. I wanted the next one immediately when I finished. The Coroner follows Dr Emily Hartford, a surgical resident on a difficult trip back home. She hasn't been back since her mother died twelve years earlier. Emily is estranged from her doctor/coroner father since her mother's death. But now she is on her way home after getting word that her father has had a heart attack. Oh and by the way her boyfriend gave her a huge diamond and asked her to marry him as she is heading out the door, Many emotions are flooding Emily on the trip home. She needed answers about her mother's death but will her father give them to her? While there a young girl died in what appeared to be a riding accident. With her father in the hospital, Emily has to fill in for the small town coroner. There are more questions than answers in the girl's death. Oh and to add another complication to the the story, her former boy friend is the town sheriff. Just as we are getting some answers to questions the book ends. I think I even shouted NO. But in the end can you really go home again?
A very well written story, and I am hoping there will be more in the series. There is a bit of humor, medical procedures, romance (just a touch which is perfect) and suspense as they try to bring a killer to justice. Great characters and refreshing plot.
Emily Hartford is called away from her job as a third year Chicago surgical resident to return home to care for her estranged seriously ill father. The local medical examiner, he has had a heart attack and needs Emily to not only help aid his recovery, but also to look into the case of the death of the teenage daughter of a senator. Emily soon declares the unexplained death as a homicide and quickly becomes wrapped up in the mystery and the family she swore to leave behind. Dornbush has the makings of a successful series in her hands with these characters
This is a genuinely readable murder mystery with heart. All sorts of things are going on around the main protagonist. You learn a lot about the life and people of Freeport, who, in the main, are very likeable and 'normal' people. Nothing is worked out by superhuman powers, the people who solve the crime do so by shher hard work and doggedness.
I was so sure that I knew who 'did it' - then I was proved wrong. This happened 3 times!
