I liked the police side of this and wish the book was more focused on the case and the police investigation of the death. Unfortunately, it was so bogged down by Nicole's sister issues. It was just too much and not interesting.
As always Gregg did not disappoint. This book was a quick read for me mostly because I could not put it down. I cannot begin to tell you how now matter what book I pick up of his they are never a let down! In my opinion this book is a bit heavier than some of his other fiction books however it’s heavy in a good way. By chapter 6 you will so pulled in that you will have to keep checking the time and goodness gracious chapter 18 😅.
My first book by this author. The book is captivating, moving, and full of thrills and twists. Definitely recommend it. Thank you NetGalley for the copy of The Weight of Silence by Gregg Olsen.
From my perspective, author Gregg Olsen writes female protagonists extremely well! The Weight of Silence is Book 2 featuring Washington State detective Nicole Foster. Both this book and the first title, The Sound of Rain, captured Nicole facing down the murder of a young child. And in each, multiple subplots complicated Nicole’s task. Common to both volumes was the extreme conflict caused by Nicole’s sister Stacy, a narcissist, psychopath, and murderer. I highly recommend reading both books, in order, for maximum engagement.
This was an emotionally agonizing road. The dual story line will have you chewing your nails and sitting on the edge of your seat. There are family relationships, work relationships, addictions, child neglect, etc., that fill the pages. The twists and turns are nonstop and make this a book I highly recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer for the eARC. I did not know this was the second book in a series and it didn’t feel like one so this can definitely be enjoyed as a stand alone novel. Nicole Foster is a disgraced police officer starting over back in her home town. She’s raising her 7 year old niece Emma as her own and makes sure her aging father is well taken care of in assisted living. Her perfect sister Stacey, Emma’s mother, is as evil as they come and Nicole will do whatever it takes to keep her niece safe and happy. The main story centers around a man named Luke that pulls over next to a Starbucks screaming for help. It’s the middle of an oppressive heatwave in the Northwest and he’s “forgotten” his 1 year old daughter Ally in the sweltering car all day while he’s been at work. The investigation takes a lot of interesting twists and turns. I couldn’t decide which part of the story I needed resolution for first, Nicole and Stacey’s personal issues or Ally Tomlinson’s death. Definitely a fast paced book.
was a gripping thriller that took you to every aspect of trying to figure out what was really going on and what was going to happen next! This was such an amazing book and I can’t wait to see what else is released from this author!
My first time reading Gregg Olsen. This was a really dark, interesting story. A police officer named Nicole that has gone through a series of personal problems. Gambling, homelessness, her narcissistic sister causing trouble. She has finally gotten her life back on track and is working at the police station in her hometown, and taking care of her sister's 7 year old daughter, whom she abandoned. Her latest case involves the death of toddler left in a car during one of the hottest days of the year. While trying to unravel this horrible series of events, she realizes her sister has come back into town, and she fears that her sister will try and take back custody of her daughter. A really great read, great build of characters! I hope to read more from this author in the future.
While heartbreaking to read about a toddler dying in a hot car, I found this book to be just as exceptional as all of Gregg Olsen's other books. Somehow I missed the precursor to The Weight of Silence, The Sound of Rain, so now I must get my hands on that one! But I didn't feel put out by not having read it first, so this novel does work as a standalone.
Straight from the headline news!
A child dies in a hot car, how could her dad have forgotten her in that car all day?
Full of twists and turns, a must read!
I didn't read the first book however it seemed okay. If you like ncis or svu youll love this. The thought of leaving a child in a hot car and FORGETTING they are there in the hot car is just horrific, Is it an accident or was it planned?
HOLY SMOKES!!! This book was incredible. I am still reeling. I am giving fair warning the story line is so hard to read, especially for parents.. there were literally parts that i had to set the book down and take a short walk to clear my head. That being said this was a past paced story with a sub story that ran fairly seamlessly, if i am honest i didnt love the sub story between the sisters at first but by the end i was looking forward to seeing how that played out as well. This book grabs you from the very start and takes you on a gut wrenching journey that nightmares are made of.. only in this story the monsters are very much seemingly every day human beings. I also did not love the ending, most of the story line was neatly tied up but while the resolution was clearly implied, i wanted to be a part of it too. Alas we were left just knowing and not actually having it put to print. Even with the passive ending i have still given this 5 stars. I am left still feeling sick to my stomach and i am leaving you with this 5 star review, if you like to read stories that are a mystery/suspense based on the dark inside of everyday people read this book!
This is my first book by Gregg Olsen and I really enjoyed reading it! I am compelled to go back and read the first book in this series now, as my interest in the characters and their backstory is piqued. I enjoyed the writing style and the mystery, I felt surprised at the end! Good read, thanks for the ARC!
The Weight of Silence is the second book in the Nicole Foster Thriller series and I am completely addicted to these stories. They are fast-paced, compulsively readable crime fiction stories with a host of characters I absolutely love, or hate, depending. This was a tough one, in that it focused on a horrific crime with incredibly narcissistic culprits involved, but I couldn’t help but find the story captivating despite the heinous nature of the crime. And the ending had a surprising twist that I wasn’t expecting. I really do love Nicole Foster as a detective and a character, as well as those who surround her. I hope this series continues on for a long while.
I love this author I have read many of Gregg Olsens book and never has one disappointed me. The sound of rain was awesome and this is just as good. I hope you keep on writing Gregg as I will keep on buying !!
I have never read this author before but found it interesting and a quick read. The subject matter was not something that can be handled easily but this was well written and not so graphic that it was unreadable. I can't fault the author for the realism of the subject matter. Unfortunately we have been exposed to these type of selfish people, anti social behaviors and disturbing events in the .paper and on TV. more frequently that we would like. This review is my opinion only . I received a copy via NetGalley.

2.5 Hearts Not high on my Olsen favorites even though I enjoy most of his books. I never really connected with any of the characters. I thought the story was very slow and well a bit boring.
I will pick up the next in the series but I just didn’t enjoy this story.

Gregg Olsen has delivered once again - a taut, well-written police procedural that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
I have no idea why I waited so long to read The Weight of Silence by Gregg_Olsen when I know that his books always are going to amazing. Of course this one is no exception!
The Weight of Silence is the follow-up to Olsen's bestseller, The Sound of Rain, where we first met Detective Nicole Foster. Foster is back after her catastrophic downward spiral in The Sound of Rain and ready for a second chance. She's moved back to her childhood home on the Washington coast to care for her niece Emma and begin "fresh" in a new department. Of course, the past never really is buried and her sociopathic sister, Stacey, is not going to let Nicole's past stay in the past for long.
The story is two-fold: the majority of the theme is an extremely well written police procedural where Nicole and her partner, Carter, are investigating the worst kind of case - the death of a child. The parents insist at every opportunity available that the child's death was an accident. But was it really? Methodical policing may prove otherwise. As the case progresses, Olsen gives us an in-depth examination of Nicole's current life - her intense love for her niece, her "family" which includes an aging pooch and her Alzheimer ridden father. We learn more about Nicole's gambling addiction and the strength she uses to overcome it every single day. To say that Olsen is a master of character development is understatement. He is brilliant. Ultimately Nicole's past and present converge at a climactic conclusion that is extremely satisfying on both fronts.
There are times when I think that suspense/mystery/thrillers all are blending together and merely re-telling the same plot over and over again. With The Weight of Silence I am reminded how wonderful it is when the genre is done right.
Five highly recommended Stars to The Weight of Silence!
First and foremost, thank you Netgalley for a copy of "The Weight of Silence". As an individual who didn't know this was a series upon first inspection, I was able to pick up exactly what was happening with Nicole, Emma, Carter, and Co.
Set in the sweltering heat wave of summer on the Washington Coast, an infant is left in her father's car to die. The real story will throw you for a loop. At some points, the story seems a little predictable, but all in all it was a wonderful read.
I am a bit shocked I haven't read Gregg Olsen before. :)
Please if you're questionable about reading this book, pick it up, give yourself five minutes, I'll bet you won't be able to put it down.
Thank you NetGalley for the copy of The Weight of Silence by Gregg Olsen that I read and reviewed.
This was the second Nicole Foster Thriller and I did not love it as much as I did the first book but I did not hate this book either. This book was centered around the death of a one year old child in a hot car and so it was a very deep subject and was bit hard to read. It also dealt with a lot of Nicole's family issues so you got to learn a lot about Nicole and what she had to deal with and how she was going to deal with her family and her family issues. I think the thing that I had the problem with this book was the child's death. It was just so hard to wrap ones mind around that a parent would do that to their own child.
Overall, this was a really good book and it was a great way to get deeper into the life of Nicole Foster and what makes her tick. There was also a number of plot twist and turns that keeps the book true that thriller that you are expecting to get from Olsen.
I am giving The Weight of Silence five out of five stars.
