The first portion (not potion) of the book plays along quite well with the movie version we all know and love. In fact, I bet it will compel you to grab the movie and watch again, regardless of time of year. It must be magic! As I read the Sanderson's lyrical spells and singing chants, I could only hear the wonderful soundtrack in my mind. Thank you Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker.
I also appreciate the timing of this release as the movie also debuted in July.
Even with all the strange and weird oddities and illogicals associated with this story, it is all around family fun, good for any age.

The sequel does a good job of paralleling the original script, including adding lyrics for songs and whirlwind like actions. The author tries to update the references to those befitting several decades later and to be relevant for a new generation. The kids from the first story are now grown and have a daughter. She has been told about the Sanderson Sisters and that fated Halloween night, but is as curious and impulsive as most teens are. She also wants to impress a crush as her father did those twenty five years earlier.

I have fond memories of the first tale, so I can't expect this sequel to have the same effect for me, but I appreciate the story continuing. The lesson here is not to open a spellbook at night!

Delightful! I enjoyed I enjoyed the added inner dialogue included in the original, because that always adds to a great story and is the best part of a book that often gets lost in a movie. The sequel added a wonderful addition to one of my favorite (seriously, I still watch the movie every Halloween) movies. Reading about how Dani, Max, Alliso , Binx, and Emily continued on and reading about a new generation of Salem teenagers gets into more trouble with the Sanderson sisters was fantastic! Add the inclusivity of AAs and the LGBT community...and this is something I cannot wait for my son to read. I would recommend this to anyone that is a fan of the movie or those who have yet to find their way to the wonderful story that is Hocus Pocus!

I was torn between being over-the-moon excited for this sequel and terrified that it would be awful.

It's not. It's actually a worthy successor to Hocus Pocus, despite doing what I think too many nostalgic reboots/remakes/sequels/etc do in that the sequel story borrows elements directly from the originals and replays them in a slightly new way, like an homage that's also a theft (if that makes sense). Still, the story is strong, the new characters are fun (though Travis grated on my nerves), and the LGBT storyline was an unexpected and totally welcome surprise.

I read this on my kindle, and for some reason, I wasn't getting a page count. I can tell you that this book IRL is probably thick (or as the kids say thiicc.)

You get two books, the original Hocus Pocus in novel form (it's like reading the movie) and the sequel which is called "The Hocus Pocus Sequel" Weird, but okay. Poppy is the 17yo daughter of the original children(Max and Allison) who encountered the Sanderson sisters in 1993. They live in the same town, and her parents keep their experience plus belief in witches on the down low. Poppy has told her closest friend how they are related to the Sanderson's but not much else. This changes on Halloween night of 2018 as Poppy tells her newish friend Isabella the truth about her family. They end up taking a Ouji board out, and you can guess what happens then. Clue- aMok! aMok! aMok!

I stretched both books out to two days by making myself read slowly (I'm a huge Hocus Pocus fan) and enjoyed the experience. I'll be buying it for sure.

It took me some time to get into this book but after about 20% into it I was hooked. It was just like the movie for the first half of the book and it was a wonderfully written piece that did justice to the movie. The second half of the book was beautiful. I love how the author took the story more into the future and it did bring me a lot of laughs. The only thing with this is that I wish that it wasn’t so slow in the beginning for me to get into. I loved the movie as a child and most of the time I would have “call it” around 20% but I stuck with it and I am glad I did. Overall, I enjoyed the story very much and am happy to say that I would suggest this title to anyone that loved the movie.

I’ll be honest it took me a minute to get into the second book. But once you’re there it’s as fun as the original movie. It’s like a blast from the past. And well worth the read.

The first part of the book is exactly as the movie. So, I’d youre a huge fan then I recommend you take a chance and read the entire book.

I love Hocus Pocus and was excited to see the word "sequel" attached to it. I requested to read it as a preview from Netgalley. I was thrilled with the extra information provided in the part of this book that follows the movie. I was more than thrilled with the sequel. It fit so well together and had enough modern day details to make it feel somewhat realistic.

When I first saw this book I knew I had to read it. I have loved Hocus Pocus since I was a kid. I watch it every Halloween and now has become a tradition with my daughter.

The book comes in 2 parts the first part is like the movie with a few added bits and pieces so that you’ll understand the second part a bit more. The second part being set in 2018

I loved the pictures that were added into the book. I felt like it added a special something to the book.

One thing that I really enjoyed was how some of the original characters made an appearance in the sequel.

I absolutely adored how the author made the second half relatable to today. I think that kids that haven’t seen the movie will be able to understand the fantasticness of this book.

**i was given this book by Netgalley and Disney Book Group in exchange for an honest review**

I'm torn on this. The first section is a movie novelization, with a few additional comments but no surprises. I love the movie and ended up skimming this section because I can quote most of it verbatim.

The second section is new, but not great. It both tries to be original and reference the movie's best bits in a way that doesn't entirely work. It took me over a week to read it, despite great updates like a diverse cast. It's not bad, but it's hard to compare to such a beloved film.

This book brought me back to my Jr. High days and I loved it. The first half of the book is just like the movie, but with a few new tid-bits added in to tie it into the second part. The sequel half of the book is a great fit for the modern era. Of course it's not as good as the original but it kept me reading. It was cute, exciting and a fast read. The book leaves you hanging with a nice witchy twist that I hope someday will be continued. Any Hocus Pocus fan has to read this book!

This was actually much cuter than I was expecting, a great sequel for Hocus Pocus fans. The first part of the book is almost exactly a word-for-word retelling of the movie. The second part starts the sequel with Poppy, Allison and Max's daughter. She reawakens the Sanderson sisters and chaos ensues. A thoroughly satisfying sequel for anyone who was hoping for more! It's not another movie, but it's the next best thing.

I have always loved Hocus Pocus, so reading this book was a delight. Weary of based on movie books, I was pleasantly surprised by the retelling of the original tale. The author adds as insights, character motivations, and vividly descriptive narratives. The sequel was a little more basic, but a welcome modern day story to continue the tale. The ending was perfect, and I hope it leads to more and more tales of witchcraft and friendships in Salem.

As soon as I saw this book, I knew I needed to request it. I have been obsessed with Hocus Pocus ever since I saw it in the theatre when it came out when I was 12 years old and still watch it every Halloween. Most of us have always wondered if there would ever be a sequel, and since I highly doubt that, this will be the next best thing.

I liked that the book has the original Hocus Pocus story in it, so if you don't know it, you'll get a better insight into it before going onto the sequel which is set 25 years later in 2018. I liked how the sequel was original but at the same time brought back a lot of the old characters.

This book was adorable and if you're a fan of Hocus Pocus the movie, you should probably just go ahead and read this ASAP.

I'll do a quick review of the book version of Hocus Pocus, but I'm not going to focus on it because I'm assuming most everyone has seen the movie. The book version is exactly like the movie, pretty much to a T. The dialogue, situations, and scene descriptions are exactly what was depicted in the movie. The internal dialogue was a nice touch because it gives us a little more insight into the thoughts and feelings of the characters. In short, if you're looking for a book version of the movie- you've found one.

The Sequel Review

This was so stinkin cute. This book follows Poppy Dennison who is Allison and Max's daughter and Dani's niece. She brings the witches back and accidentally sends her parents and aunt to hell so a night of running around dodging the Sanderson sisters while simultaneously trying to defeat them ensues.

I can tell that the author loved the movie because she definitely did it justice with her version of the sequel. Poppy and her friends were excellent characters and I liked seeing how they deal with the Sanderson sisters in the 21st century. I was cracking up at how the witches tried to figure out a smartphone aka a "memory box" and then their subsequent use of it. It was a very nice touch.

The storyline was well thought out and it didn't copy anything from the first movie. It was unique and a very fitting sequel to Hocus Pocus. We even get to see what Jay (one of the bullies from the movie) is up to now! This book is very much a YA book so it is very clean with the exception of a mild curse word here and there. There is also a LGBTQ storyline which I thought was a cool addition.

I'll be honest, I was super hesitant to request this book. I try not to request book unless I think I'll really like it so I tend to stay away from hokey (no pun intended) sounding books, but given that HP is one of my all time favorite movies I had to request this one. I am really glad I did. Seriously, if you liked HP and this mildly intrigues you, give it a whirl. It's a quick fun read and you won't regret it. And that epilogue...OH MAN!
