One of my most vivid memories of my trip to Africa was freaking out when I saw a white rhino in the distance. It was being followed by a pickup truck. naïve as I was, I thought it may be poachers (in broad daylight!); but it ended up being three rangers whose job is to serve as the rhinos body guards (so to speak).

This book is timely. We need to continue raising awareness of the perils of the poaching industry and while this book contains a couple of images that may be jarring to readers of all ages, they are presented in the spirit of "a picture is worth a thousand words."

The Great Rhino Rescue: Saving the Southern White Rhinos by Sandra Markle is a children's non fiction book. Southern white rhinos need to be rescued, again. In the late 1800s, these rhinos were believed to be extinct. Fortunately, a few were discovered and African governments stepped in to protect them. But now these rhinos are in danger from something else: the demand for their horns. In 2008 a rumor began spreading that rhino horn can cure cancer, and poachers began targeting these incredible animals for their horns. This book explores how African governments, local communities, and volunteer organizations are working together to save the Southern white rhinos once again.

The Great Rhino Rescue: Saving the Southern White Rhinos is an important book, not just because it shows the dangers white rhinos have, and are currently facing- and how people are trying to help. It also shows how delicate the balance of nature is, and how quickly a change in people's beliefs and behavior can impact the world. THe story of the White Rhino is sad, with moments of hope dashed by the greed and beliefs of humans. However, the number of people working to counteract the damage people are causing, and the danger they pose, leaves me hopeful. Like with so much of the world landscape now, it is in the efforts of people trying to do the right thing and make things better that just might save us all. As always, Markle offers readers hope for the future and some valuable information in the end pages, including sources for further reading and research.

The Great Rhino Rescue: Saving the Southern White Rhinos is another well researched and written book about endangered animals, and how people are trying to help. I highly recommend exploring Markle's animal non fiction and adding this book to the collection.

This is an excellent book about the Southern Rhinoceros that carefully explains why they are endangered and what people are doing about it . Sandra Markle does a terrific job of finding interesting stories about animals and using photographs and short text pieces to tell a compelling story. I love her work and I know my students are going to love having this one in our library.

Sandra Markle continues to write nonfiction that is so important and well done. This one looks at trying to rescued the Southern White Rhino species in Africa while they are being threatened by poachers. It goes into the history behind their poaching, the different species of rhinos, the law surrounding rhinos, and what we can do to help.

Knowing The Great Rhino Rescue is written by the same author as the "What If You Had Animal..." series made me immediately reach for this book - my preschoolers love these stories! Rhinos are such rare creatures so this book is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about them! The photographs on the pages following are a visual feast for the reader's eyes. Younger children will enjoy the photographs and older readers will enjoy learning new facts independently - the narrative is advanced from the'perspective of a young reader, but we get to enjoy all aspects of the rhinoceros' battle for survival. This would be a book I'd like to to keep on the animals shelf in my classroom - it might be recommended for students ages 5 to 8 but would add parents of preK 4s as well as some upper primary students might enjoy reading it as well. Thanks to #NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to preview #TheGreatRhinoRescue by @SANDRA_MARKLE

The Animal Rescue Series by Sandra Markle is a wonderful way to learn about endangered species and what is being done to save and protect them. This book is not the feel good story that some of the others are as the Southern White Rhinoceros is still very much in danger from poaching. It was unbelievable to read that this is the second time they are endangered. Using protected parks, guards and dogs, drugs to ruin the horns for humans, the fight continues. The photographs that are used in the book are all beautiful. They are in the natural habitats of the animals. It is so sad to see animals killed for no reason other than a rumor that the horns cure cancer. Baby rhinos are often left orphaned and even if rescued can die of depression. The book talks about how rhinos live and about their territories and family life. Their usefulness is also discussed. At the back of the book there are resources, glossary, what can you do to help and other facts. Some of the information in the book is rather upsetting so I would not recommend this book for young children. It is a great resource when studying endangered species and how we can help and what is being done around the world. A great addition to any school library.
