WOW! I have just finished this book and my first thought was, this book should be made into a film.
Into the Darkness is a well written, compelling, fast paced crime thriller with a fantastic plot. I loved it!
Suffice to say I give it five big fat shiny stars and will be recommending it to all my friends.
Sibel Hodge is on my list of authors that I need to read.... I have loved all of her books and this one ranks right up there. The story is dark, disturbing and horrifying and will not be for everyone, but I do highly recommend it.
It is told from 3 different points of view:
The Missing - 18 year old student Toni is missing and being held captive.. but why and by who?
The Vigilante - Ex SAS Mitchell is called on by Toni's mother to help find her
The Detective - DS Warren Carter is about to leave the police force and is called to the scene of a murdered couple on a farm.
The more the 3 of these characters dig the more disturbing the answers are. The Dark Web is a place where the most horrific people and things can be found. Can they find what they are lo King for and find Toni before it is too late.
Thanks you Amazon Publishing UK for the advanced copy of this book to read in exchange for my honest opinions. A fantastic book that will have you addicted.
An interesting story being told by three different individuals who all their own way come together to provide a thrilling end to the plot. Hopefully I will catch up with Maya and Mitchell in future adventures.
Excellent, excellent, excellent ! I don't know what it says about me that I loved a dark and disturbing book, but I did. There are 3 main characters and I loved the way the author delved into all of them and showed us their many sides. This is a great mystery and it is extremely well written. I loved how it all came together ! Perfect ending, I can only hope there will be more books written around these characters.
I am a massive fan of Sibel Hodge and was so excited when I spotted this new book from her. I wasn't prepared for the addictive pull it had on me that meant putting it down was simply not an option. I tried to place it down to watch TV and managed about 10 minutes before switching the TV off and continuing until the end. I ended up going to sleep at 3am! That is your fault Ms Hodge but I wouldn't have it any other way. It was a fantastic surprise that I wasn't expecting!
"Into the Darkness" is well written and paced with a taut, tense plot that keeps you reading. The story is told from multiple perspectives - the detective, vigilante and victim and the short chapters mean it is just so easy to get through and as a result is impossible to put down. I felt like I was invested in the story and wanted to find out what happened to each character in the end. The finale is action-packed and although the subject matter of the book is dark, I can see this becoming a bestseller.
Hodge is adept at crafting a superb story that is a pleasure to read and does a fantastic job of pulling all of threads together at the end. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer for an ARC. I was not required to post a review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
What can I say about this book. I loved it, devoured it in one sitting. This book is like a bullet train and does not stop until the Last page. I did not want this book to end. As the author mentioned, the premise is this story is actually based on true crime in the Philippines. This book gives you a glimpse of the depravity a small section of the human race are willing to inflict on others for fun, money and pleasure.
I would like to thank the author Sibel Hodge, Amazon Publishing UK and Net.galley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for giving an honest review.
Hello
Hello
Is there anyone out there reading my review?
Say “yes” if you did.
Why are you still sitting there! You need to order this book, seriously.
I am not kidding when I say that from the start of the very first page I was flicking over, over and over the pages, my eyes were reading, reading reading and I felt a hand on my back slowly urging me forward and forward to the unknown, to the depths of the horror in these pages.
My jaw was dropping.
It not only warmed up but kept me on fire right to the very end.
Am I raving too much about this book? YOU read it, judge for yourself.
I was on tenderhooks.
This is not only a fast moving thriller it’s a fast read despite how many pages there are because you are so glued to it that time goes into nothing, things around you can go on, you HAVE to finish this book.
It’s got crime.
Thriller.
The unknown dark web.
Nasty people.
Crime unimaginable.
Yet it’s a story screaming out to be heard.
I heard it.
Loud and clear.
This author made me feel sick, disgusted, entranced, wanting to get justice, empathy for certain characters, angry, wanting to spit ( or more) into many of the people’s faces.
At the end I was glad, yes, glad. I didn’t care! So there! Who cares what is right and wrong. I understood it.
I applauded.
I worried about certain people even after I closed the very last page.
This review may not make sense to you.
It will.....
Once you’ve read it THEN...
Only THEN come back and read my review again.
It will then open your eyes to things I cannot reveal.
Huge thanks to the author. Whose mind is amazing.
To Amazon publishing on Net Galley
Dark and treacherous is the best way to describe this story, as it take in some of the dark side, thankfully not in too much gory detail!
The story is told in the sections from the points of view of The Missing, The Detective and The Vigilante. At times I did wonder if or how or when there would be an crossover of stories, so although I was looking out for it when everything came together it was rather satisfying.
In terms of the detective and the vigilante, their two ways of approaching their investigations are really different and what did make me laugh is the level of political correctness being used in the police force!
This is a fast paced, edge of you seat thriller, where you are never completely sure what the outcome will be, or just what the motives are either.
Into the Darkness is another cracking book from Sibel Hodge, and one that I'm sure will disturb my dreams tonight!
Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This is an amazing crime thriller! The story is told by three people ... the missing, the Homicide Detective and the vigilante.
I starts with two crimes ... one is the abduction of a young girl. Mitchell is ex-military and comes running when Toni's mother calls him for help. The other crime is the brutal killing of an elderly couple, It wasn't robbery, it seems to be totally random, but Detective Carter doesn't quite buy it.
The suspense is high to begin with, but when the crime investigations start to merge, the tension goes through the roof.
This is a thriller that I did not want to put down. The characters are outstanding and stick in your head like glue. Mitchell and Carter are first seen in this author's earlier books ... DUPLICITY and BENEATH THE SURFACE. This is a stand alone so no cliffhangers in sight.
Honorable Mention: I loved the diversity humor! Carter can't call the whiteboard a whiteboard anymore .. it's now a notice board. When someone asks him how he wants his coffee, he responds natural-looking. Getting a puzzled look, he says ... I can't say black, can I? Brings the book right into today...
Many thanks to the author / Amazon Publishing UK / and Netgalley as well as TBC Reviewer Request Group for this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I have enjoyed every book I have read by this author, Sibel Hodge and this latest book is a brilliant read. each book has been completely different but just as thrilling. Into The Darkness delves into the Dark Web, which is portrayed as a terrifying and evil place A young girl has gone missing after discovering this sinister Dark Web. The search for her by her godfather Mitchell and his discovery of these horrific deeds, leaves him in no doubt that time is running out.. A fast paced, gripping action packed thriller had me gasping for breath! I certainly cant wait for the next book by this author.
Into The Darkness is a dark and stormy ride that will have readers hooked.
The story is told from three different points of view The Vigilante, The Police and the Victim. Giving readers a different side of the story that pushes readers to understand truths that we try to hid from.
This a must not miss Thriller.
Thank you to netgalley for the advance copy.
By writing from the point of view of not one, not two, but three characters the writer skillfully provided an echo of the multi layers of the World Wide Web that exists. I found the book chilling at times, fast paced throughout, and left me wanting more at the end. Wanting more in that I was disappointed I had finished the book so quickly. An Author I will be adding to my list to watch out for. Highly recommend Into the Darkness.
This was somewhat dark and disturbing but also really intriguing. You feel compelled to read it which is perfect for what the story is trying to portray. This story is told by 3 different perspectives which would normally be very confusing for me but it worked for this book and I was able to follow the story very easily. Amazing book
Fantastic storyline brilliantly written with three seperate narrations which come together as the story unfolds. I have read the authors previous books and this certainly lived up to and even exceeded my expectations. At one point I thought if I had been watching a film I would have been watching through my fingers.
Another enjoyable thriller by Sibel Hodge. This one brings in characters from previous books. The format is one chapter per character with seemingly different stories which then start to come together. I like this type of book set up. The story matter is very strong, but luckily doesn't go into too much detail of it's "dark side".
I like this author's lightweight chick-lit stories, and she is starting to be one of my favourite thriller writers too.
A powerful novel that introduces its readers to the 'dark web'. A place that will chill you to the core. Shocking, distressing and highly disturbing, this book will have you on the edge of your seat and immersed in its pages from start to finish. Told by three narrators - The Missing, The Vigilante and The Detective, the plotline is intricately constructed but still easy to follow. Impossible to predict what might happen and how it will all end, but during the last section it all comes together very nicely. A stunning read.
Many thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this ARC for which I have given my voluntary and unbiased review.
A great book from three perspectives, the Detective who is looking at a double murder if an elderly couple, no apparent motive. The vigilante who is looking to find his friends missing daughter and the missing girl.
It was a good read not gripping in particular or edge of seat thriller but was enjoyable
Another hit by Sibel Hodge! Love this author and all of her books!
Into the Darkness is told in three different narratives: The Detective, The Vigilante, and The Missing. This book explores the dark web and this author doesn't shy away from a dark subject matter but she does it very well.
Toni, an 18-year-old has a fascination with true crime and finds herself going deeper and deeper into the Web. She has suddenly gone missing and her mother reaches out to Mitchell, an ex Soldier (The Vigilante). Mitchell served with Toni's dad and feels an obligation to save his daughter.
This is a sobering look into the dark side of what happens in this world today, something I hope never ever to see or experience. Fast paced and well written, 5 stars from me. Thank you so much Thomas & Mercer/Amazon Publishing/NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book!
The Bottom Line:
An interestingly told thriller that does not shy away from the gory stuff, hits you in the face with the truth that you’d rather never know, and spins an intricate, well-plotted tale that is not made any less enjoyable by its predictability.
My take:
Writing in the first person isn’t always easy. Not too many people like the approach so you have to be exceptionally good at it to ensure that your audience can associate with the character they’re following. Writing from different points of view consistently isn’t easy either. It’s altogether too easy to get their personalities mixed up, and end up with one’s style seeping into the other.
Yet, Sibel Hodge does both these things with brilliant precision in Into the Darkness.
The story follows a vigilante who believes that justice is best served instantly, a missing girl whose desire to help people takes her into the depths of unspeakable horror, and a detective who’s been worn down by the injustices he’s witnessed in his career but still, desperately, needs to trust in the legal system. All three are gray characters, and Hodge’s style allows you to follow their internal battles and really get into the story. She doesn’t break their characterization at all, which adds to the association that readers develop for the characters.
The story itself is quite interesting. It is based on a topic that has been done previously (in movies and books) – the dark web – but still manages to be fresh in its approach. It’s also painfully graphic, so those who aren’t used to too much gore may have a few cringe-worthy moments while reading. When you look beyond the near-horrific narrations though, you see that it’s less about the activity and more about the people behind it. Into the Darkness focuses a lot on what people, good and bad, are really capable of; on how far someone can go, how malleable their morals can become, if they’re motivated by greed and insane fetishes, or the desire to help people and enable justice.
The book proceeds at a good speed, taking you from one POV to another and back as you turn pages wondering just how (and even if) these three arcs meet. It’s not immensely unpredictable, but there are definitely some shock-factors. The characters within the story have apparently made appearances previously in other works, but the story is complete in itself. All in all, Into the Darkness is a well-paced, intriguing thriller; and while I wouldn’t say that this should be the next book you should read, it definitely should be on the TBR pile of anyone who enjoys the genre or wants to venture into it.
Recommended to:
- those who enjoy thrillers
- those who enjoy multi-POV or first-person focused books (both these aspects are done extremely well)
- those who like crime fiction
A big thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for an ARC of this book. It led to me discovering some very interesting characters and a new author to follow.
Sibel Hodge is forever pulling great powerful dark stories out the bag and this is no exception. I love her style of writing, this book being told from three different perspectives, is clever and engaging. Surrounded by the dark crimes and strong characters, this book had me hooked.
The books starts with the murders of an older couple and a missing teenage girl, somewhat unlinked and a race against time where the characters literally jump into the darkness. This book pulls you into places you really don't want to go, the dark web, it's so near for us all to touch and what made this book even more chilling to read.
