I would like to thank Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for an advance copy of Into the Darkness, a stand alone novel set in the countryside, north of London.
DS Warren Carter is called out to investigate the murder of a retired couple in their secluded home. With few clues and and a reduced staff he has his work cut out trying to make sense of it. In the meantime, Mitchell receives a call from a fellow SAS comrade's widow asking for help in finding her daughter, Toni, who has gone missing.
Into the Darkness is a well plotted novel with good pace and a certain amount of tension but for me it isn't an absorbing read as I don't like the format which I find distracting and choppy. The novel has three distinct voices, The Missing, The Detective and The Vigilante, and all are narrated in the first person. The chapters are helpfully titled to let the reader know who is speaking and thus avoids confusion. The first person narration should engender reader identification with the characters but the constant switching of point of view means that there is little time to get to know them or settle into their rhythm.
The plotting is well done with incremental discoveries leading to an action packed finale. It may be said that Mitchell's discoveries come rather easily but they move it along at a brisk pace. Warren's investigation is much slower and less impactful but he still gets there at the same time. Toni's narrative adds nothing important to plot development except a sense of helplessness. There is little to be learned from it, in the sense that it covers a well worn path regular crime fiction readers will know well as being currently on trend.
Into the Darkness will, despite its dark subject matter, appeal to many readers as it is well done but it's just not to my taste.
In terms of character POV, Into the Darkness was one of the most unique stories I have ever read. This story is told in three different perspectives by three different people: The Detective, The Vigilante, and The Missing. The pauses in different storylines keep you holding your breath and anticipating the next piece of information given to you by the next character in the story line. I applaud the author for taking this unique approach in this book as it made the story all the more enticing. I finished this book in two days and truthfully loved every moment of it. The beginning of this story is important as it lays the foundation of the characters and the underlying issues going on in the story. With that being said, I believe the author did an excellent job at keeping every piece of the story steady and interesting; even the beginning of the story while characters, settings and point of views are still being introduced. For being someone who reads a myriad of psychothrillers/mysteries/thrillers, this was different than any I have ever read before. To anyone craving an addictive, unique, fast-paced, page-turning thriller, Into the Darkness is the book for you.
This book had e gripped from page one! I thought I could predict it all the way through, I was wrong! with every page it left me intrigued, wanting me, yearning to find out what happened to each and every character. This is a must read book!
I always really enjoy books with multiple narratives. The fast pace of this book kept me enthralled. I gobbled it right up. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.
Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for the ARC
Absolutely brilliant! Loved this book. It kept me wondering how two different cases were linked. Highly recommended but then all her books are good !
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another great book from Sibel, I love all her books.
The story grabs you right away, short chapters written from different viewpoints; police, vigilante and victim.
I whizzed through this in a day and highly recommend it if you like suspenseful crime books.
Thanks for letting me have the book to review, once I started to read it, it was impossible to leave it down and I set the alarm early this morning so I could finish it.
I love everything Sibel Hodge writes.
Seriously, she can do no wrong in my eyes. If I see she has a new novel coming out, I pounce on that.
When I saw that I got approved to read this one by the publisher, I prepared myself.
I told my boyfriend to not bother me, I settled myself on my favorite couch with a few snacks and a nice pot of tea. I pulled my blanket over me and I started reading.
Safe to stay, I did not stop reading. I finished the book in one go and went to bed around 2 AM. I had work the next day at 7, but I did not have any regrets.
This book is worth a sleepless night. This book is worth so many things.
Read it. If you want to be kept on your toes and read a very well written thriller, Sibel Hodge is the writer for you!
I have always been a fan of crime stories that delve into multiple narrations. The book by Sibel Hodge does just that. I like to see into the mind of each character and know about their lives and their pain. A mother's child goes missing and she will do everything in her power to get her back. The detective is on the case looking for leads. Piecing everything together was a thrill ride. It started off slow and then shifted into high gear. This book seemed to real. It is obvious Hodge did research for this book and it shows. Wow. You don't want to miss this action ride.
