This author is really great. I really loved this book. This tale was highly engrossing and highly recommendable!!
What immediately drew me to A Mother’s Goodbye was the claim that fans of Jodi Picoult will love it. Jodi Picoult is my absolute favourite author so I could have been setting myself up for disappointment but I wholeheartedly enjoyed this book. Like the work of Picoult, Hewitt takes a moral dilemma and trashes out the different choices and decisions that the characters have to make, leaving the reader gripped and often on the verge of tears – in the best way possible, of course.
What I love about books like A Mother’s Goodbye is the connection they make with the reader, even if you are not personally going through the same situation as the characters. In this case, I read A Mother’s Goodbye leading up to the abortion referendum in Ireland (which was passed, by the way). The timing helped me make a deeper connection to this book: what really are a woman’s choices when it comes to pregnancy, especially an unwanted one? Are we too quick to judge other women, believing their choices are made lightly when 99.9% of the time they are not?
On the other side, this is more than a story about adoption. It is also a story about relationships, the relationship between a struggling husband and wife, between parents and their children, between a woman and her colleagues, to name a few. Equally, it is a story about grief and letting go.
A Mother’s Choice is also very strong on the character side. Heather and Grace are the main characters in the book. They are two very different women with very different lives, totally unconnected up until the point of the adoption. I applaud the author for the wonderful development each character enjoys throughout the book, and how successfully they are intertwined but also have chapters where they stand alone as their own person. Heather and Grace are not monotonous either. I found myself chopping and changing between liking one more than the other throughout the story. To be able to successfully play with the feelings of the reader and still keep the story flowing excellently is another feat I believe Hewitt should be applauded for.
Overall, I truly enjoyed this book. It is my first sample of Hewitt’s work and I am going to make it my business that it won’t be my last.
I simply love the writing style of Kate Hewitt. Its flowing and descriptive at the same time. Great book to read at the end of a busy day.
Another heartbreaking novel by a talented author. Imagine being a poor single mother, and then you discover you have another mouth to feed. And then your saving grace arrives on the scene. Is it the right thing to do, for you and the baby. What a sweet novel, keep your tissues handy.
What an emotional and powerful read! This was the first book I’ve read by Kate Hewitt and I’m eager to read more! A woman who has no choice but to give her baby up for adoption and the relationship that comes to be with the adoptive mother will grip you and wreck you emotionally. 5 stars and lots of tissues for A Mother’s Goodbye!
What a fabulous book! Literally could not put it down. Heather falls pregnant and due to an ill husband and 3 other children she decides on open adoption, When her son is born Grace adopts him. The families keep in touch every month which is certainly awkward. When Grace becomes ill Heather is who she turns to. A lovely book about life, love and forgiveness. I had so many emotions reading it even tears.
Heather just discovered that she is pregnant…again. How did this happen? She and Kevin already have three beautiful daughters and they are barely making ends meet as it is. Several years ago, Kevin was injured at work and is now primarily confined to his chair at home unable to work, leaving it to Heather to provide for the family.
Heather now must make one of the hardest decisions of her life, what to do about this baby growing inside her. She and Kevin know, no matter how much they want to, they cannot keep it. They simply cannot afford to care for another person in their house and they do not want to take anything away from the three children they already have. Heather also knows that she cannot get rid of the growing child, so she has but one option left. She will have to find an adoptive family. Heather decides single, wealthy Grace will be the perfect woman adopt their child. However, when unexpected news comes their way, it will have devastating effects for all of them.
I do not read books in this genre very frequently, not because I don’t like them (I do!), but because they are so sad and they hit you where it hurts. A Mother’s Goodbye did just that, and I loved it! I found the story to be like nothing I have ever read before and ending in a place I did not expect. As I made my way through this story I found myself being reminded somewhat of Jodi Picoult, a favorite of mine within this genre.
This story is told in alternating perspective between Heather and Grace. Through Heather we see the difficult decision she made in giving up her child and the impact that it had on her family, while at the same time through Grace we see how the adoption impacted her life and that of the child.
A Mother’s Goodbye is a powerful story of family, love, and sacrifice and how a single decision can have powerful consequences.
Oh my word this book was such a amazing read and it brought tears to my eyes at times . I loved it .
Full review to come.
I deeply apologize, but life is a handful lately and I'm using all my free time to read, not review. I hope everybody understands.
This is a brilliant five star modern fiction story. Unusually for me I cried through the book, especially at the end. Heather is pregnant and already has three daughters, her husband is out of work. She decides to have the baby adopted and chooses Grace, a single business woman with a good income. Grace has decided to adopt a baby as her father has recently died and she has no family. The rest of the rest of the book is about how suddenly life can change, in both a good and bad way. Read on!
What an emotional rollercoaster. A Mother's Goodbye depicts a real and horrible circumstance in which a mother must give up her child in order to survive. The recipient of the child comes from a completely different life to the mother and can offer the child more than she ever thinks possible. This book will take you on a journey and leave you with an ending you never expected.
Thank you to the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Wow oh wow. Do not read this book in public as I was on a plane bawling my eyes out! A heartwarming story about two very different women who are brought together....I wasn’t sure at the beginning but it quickly became excellent! Thank you and highly recommend!!!
Having read several of Ms Hewitt's previous books I kind of knew that I was in for an emotional read. This book is so beautifully written, touching, poignant. I was left feeling quite fragile. One to recommend. 4.5* from me. My thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for the advance reader copy.
Wow what can I say. An emotional journey . Kates writing grabs you and gets you emotionally involved in the characters. I loved it from page one. I highly recommend to all.
Powerful...Emotional...Heart-wrenching
A Mother's Goodbye is a story about one's woman decision to give up her baby for adoption and another woman's dream to be a single mother. The story is told in both mothers points of view. You truly feel their emotions and their journey. The writing is beautiful. It will pull at your heartstrings and bring you to tears. It was an easy read and keeps you invested throughout the book.
As an adoptive mother myself, I found this book to be relatable. I know all about the waiting for the phone call from the adoption agency, hoping for a birth mother to look at your profile and pick it from the pile of others. I have an open adoption so I stay in contact with the birth mom. For 4 years now, we have done visits around my son's birthday and at xmas.
I highly recommend reading this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of Kate Hewitt's "A Mother's Goodbye" in exchange of an honest review.
This book was too emotional, tore at my heartstrings till I could not breathe.
Heather had 3 girls, with a lazy husband, suddenly finds herself pregnant for the fourth time, gives the newborn for adoption to Grace,
The 2 women become friends of sorts and the story is told in their alternate viewpoints. The timelines change and the circumstances change, but the emotional impact does not.
I read this story crying, the twists kept me reading this book even with tears falling on my kindle. Mother's love and sacrifice and value of a loving family are beautifully shown by author Kate Hewitt.
A great emotional read. (no more sad books in the near future)
Deeply emotional and compelling! This book really took hold of me and didn't let go until the end. The writing is elegant, the story engaging and the characters well-developed. Recommended!
This is a beautifully written, absolutely wonderful story of motherhood and love which pulls at the heart strings from every angle, and boy does it stay with you for a long time after.
Heather is struggling; she has 3 girls and a husband who was injured at work and has become lazy and doesn’t help her around the house. She is working hard to keep them afloat when she finds out she is pregnant again. She has to make some extremely tough decisions in the coming months, with little or no support from her husband or family. When his payments stop and he isn’t able to work, things are at an all time low for Heather & she does what no mother can imagine - starts to look at adoption to get them out of the worsening situation. A heartbreaking decision which I’m sure most mothers cannot imagine having to make.
She chooses Grace, a career woman who has recently lost her father, the only member of her family she has. The two women become sort of friends, with Grace helping as she can and Heather struggling with her decision throughout the book. When she does have the baby we are fast forwarded ten years which was a bit of a shock but worked so well in the story. The two women are obviously still linked but things have changed. It was sometimes painful to read as I felt so much for both women, and what they are going through for the child they both love so dearly. The book takes a further twist when Grace becomes ill and yet another surprise towards the end.
This is such a moving and difficult story yet is told in a delicate manner that cannot be faulted. You won’t be disappointed, only left with thoughts of a truly wonderful book.
Heather has already got three daughters when she falls pregnant again and it couldn't have come at a worse time..... her husband Kevin is out of work after a bad accident at work and his disability payment is being stopped, her wages only just cover the rent and she had just received an eviction notice because she is behind in the rent! Grace has just lost her father and suddenly realises how alone she is in the world and what she desperately wants is a child of her own........ could she adopt one!
A very bittersweet and emotional book as you follow the stories of Grace and Heather in alternate chapters. You find yourself feeling for both of them especially as the later problems arise and It was definitely a book that stays with you after you have finished it
What an emotional read!
The story begins with heartbreaking news. Grace has lost her dad, the only remaining member of her family. On the other hand, Heather finds out that she is pregnant. Her family is struggling to get by. Heather’s husband is unemployed after a work-related injury that makes it hard for him to get a job. The family has three daughters already and cannot afford to bring up another child. This is the point at which Grace and Heather meet. Both were at a difficult stage in their lives and the child was bound to change the course of their lives.
Kate Hewitt has a way of evoking all kinds of emotions through her writing. I found myself feeling sad through most parts of the story. It was hard not to feel for the two women. I wanted to get into the book and hug them. Heather’s story broke my heart because I can’t imagine how tough and brave one has to be to make such a decision. She knew that the only way to provide a better life for her unborn was to give the child away. Grace was young, ambitious but in desperate need on love and family. I liked the two women and sympathized with them greatly. I thought this was as bad as it could get, I mean what could be worse than having to give up your child or lose the last member of your family? However, the heartbreak didn’t stop until the last page. There were more twists and turns, most of them devastating.
This is a story about motherhood and family. The author covered these themes really well and in-depth. The adoption angle was well portrayed to show how difficult it is for different parties. I also liked the portrayal of motherhood for career women. Grace was very career-oriented, on the verge of a major career breakthrough. However, her life and career goals changed with the adoption.. The theme of family was tackled realistically and from different angles. We not only get to know about Heather but also her husband, Kevin and their daughters and how their lives were affected by the adoption.
A Mother’s Goodbye is an emotional, well-written story that I recommend to everyone.
