This book takes a real rollercoaster ride through your emotions. It deals with an adoption and how hard that is for both mothers. It gives you several things to think about and appreciate how hard this must be for all parties. Your heart breaks for Heather who is finding life a real financial struggle when she discovers she's expecting another baby. She decides to go down the adoption route and we meet Grace who is a high flying exec. I wasn't sure I'd have picked Grace if I'd been looking for a 'forever mummy'- but it gives you lots of food for thought about the decisions that everyone made.
I had various feelings throughout the book where I wasn't sure how I thought it would pan out and even which mum I would side with. I could feel the heartbreak and the difficulties each mum has.
I was totally gripped throughout the book.
Thank you, NetGalley for this incredible ARC,
Oh. My Gosh. This story tugs at so many heartstrings, it makes you cry, it makes you FEEL, I read this book in one day (thank goodness for teenagers who can feed themselves) because I couldn't tear myself away from Heather and Grace. I loved this book, even though I pretty much sobbed through the end of it.
Stock up on tissues, chocolate and/or ice cream or whatever comfort food takes your fancy because believe me, you are going to need it!
When Heather discovers she’s pregnant, there are no tears of joy. With a husband off work and three other children to feed, life is hard enough as it is and the bills keep piling up. Heather decides to give her baby up for adoption and thinks single career woman Grace might just be perfect.
Grace is terribly lonely after the death of her father. Her job has always come first and now she realises she doesn’t really have anyone in her life. A baby seems the best option to fill that gap.
Another unlikely choice of book for me but this is the thing I like so much about blog tours. Stepping in to fill a gap and be surprised you’ve actually discovered something truly special. I had braced myself for a certain level of predictability but things didn’t at all turn out the way I expected them to.
A Mother’s Goodbye is quite a raw and incredibly emotional story. I didn’t always particularly agree with some of the decisions that were made or the attitudes of both Grace and Heather but you know, walk a mile in someone else’s shoes and all that. We never really know how we’ll react to certain situations until we find ourselves right in the middle of them.
I don’t want to say too much about the plot. The book description clearly tells you there is devastating news that will turn lives upside down, even more so than they already were. I’m not someone who cries easily but I often found myself desperately trying to fight back the tears and thought this book might just break me into tiny pieces.
This is an incredibly moving, powerful and heartbreaking story about motherhood, love and loss that will pull at your heartstrings. It left me tearful and in need of a massive hug and a stiff drink. Beautifully written and extremely evocative, I have a feeling this one will stay with me for a long time to come.
4.5 Heartbroken Stars 💔🌟🌟🌟🌟.5
Wow! This book pulled at my heartstrings from first page to last... A touching book about mothers love.... two mothers loving the same child.... One gave birth to him... and the other gives life to him.... both wanting the best for him....
Heather’s husband has lost his job, they have three young kids that they cannot afford to buy new shoes for, when Heather finds herself pregnant with baby number four....Grace has a successful professional life, but feels like something is missing from her personal life.... I am sure you can see where this is going, Heather chooses to have Grace adopt her baby.... as a mother I can only imagine how heartwrenching that would be, but so unselfish of Heather to want nothing but the best for her baby.... The adoption is open and Heather and family see the baby Isaac once a month.... when tragedy strikes it brings these two women together in quite a remarkable way....
Told from the points of view of both Heather and Grace.... I thought this was extremely affective, we really got a glimpse into the thoughts and feelings of both mothers.... I really found both these characters real and relatable, with all the real struggles of a mother.... I loved how their relationship strengthened and grew through tragedy and love... The ending to this was sad, sweet, and satisfying...
Absolutely recommend to those who enjoy a book about tough decisions and mothers love💕
*** many thanks to Bookouture for my copy of this beautiful book ***
I finished this book a few days ago but sit staring at this review page at a loss for words which never happens! This book was a heart wrenchingly aching tale of motherly love, loss and loyalty. It's like no other! I loved this story even though it was hard to read at times! The title leads you to believe one thing but the ending tells a different story. So so sad. But so beautiful!
This is an emotional and powerful piece of writing which is told through the viewpoint of two women, Heather and Grace. On the surface they both appear to be complete opposites but they both share a deep love for a child and a need to be a mother. Protective and nurturing, they have difficult choices to make. There are some heart-rending episodes, made all the more affecting because you have become so invested in both these women and care what happens to them.
Both women are well drawn characters and you get to learn a lot about what makes them tick. You also get to see how the decisions they make about a baby ripple out into both their lives, and how others react to their choices. This is far from a sugary look at motherhood but it goes straight to its centre showing that the tie to a child can be an almost primal, visceral need. Halfway through the story there is a shocking change of direction and it becomes a difficult read but I was fascinated to see what the outcome was going to be and dreading it at the same time.
In short: an involving and emotional read. Top marks!
Thanks to the author for a copy of the book
Kate Hewitt never disappoints, and A Mother's Goodbye is everything I expect from her!
Before you open this book, have a box of tissues handy. The storyline goes between the points of view of the birth mother and the adoptive mother. The emotions are real and deep and the choices agonizing.
Amazing!
I absolutely loved every minute of reading a Mothers choice, it's such a heartbreaking read, the characters were so well developed, I really felt for Grace Heather and Issac, this is such a wonderful book, I highly recommend it.
I received this book "A Mother's Choice" from NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own.
I cannot believe how much this book touched me. It got to one point where I had to stop reading because my chest hurt so bad from emotion and the tears were flowing. Heather already has 3 children and then she finds out she is pregnant. The family is already struggling so she doesn't know what she is going to do. I really loved Grace, that is the part where I had to stop reading for a bit - when she finds out for sure that there is no hope. I really loved this book and I highly recommend. I would give this more than 5 stars if I could.
Told from the alternating perspectives of Heather, the birth mom, and Grace, the adoptive mom, this is really the story of Isaac and how he impacts those around him. While some of the plot points might be familiar, Hewitt elevates this above the norm with her writing and sensitive insight into both women. You will feel for everyone. This made for a very good read on a rainy afternoon but I'd recommend it for any time - it's quite the page turner. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Oh I loved this book. It wrecked me, taking me on an emotional, heart breaking journey. I loved it from start to finish. Absolutely beautiful, the writing so gorgeous and evocative, transporting you, making you feel the pain and the dilemma, the heart rending choices faced by the characters. A brilliant story, one that will stay with me for a long time. Very highly recommended to everyone.
5☆ A Powerfully Emotional Read!
Wow oh wow did A Mother's Goodbye tug at my heartstrings. It's a powerful and emotional read that touched my heart.
I am not going to talk about the plot as to be honest the blurb is enough to give you an insight into this mesmerising read.
One you really need to experience yourself.
The story is told in both mothers points of view. It really works as you get to see both sides to adoption and being a mother and having to make that agonising and heart breaking decision.
A Mother's Goodbye is not an easy read, but what Kate did was take a sensitive subject and handle it realistically and sensitively, but still creating the right amount of emotion. It's insightful and all too believable but it's a subject that is very real and I applaud her.
This vivid rich tale has absolutely stolen my heart.
It's a completely absorbing read that's beautifully written told with empathy and compassion, it was powerful and gut-wrenching a very moving read that gave me chills. I don't normally get tears but it really
does touch the heart and definitely pulls the reader in.
I highly recommend this mesmerising and powerfully emotional read. But I do recommend maybe have a tissue ready. I don't get that emotional but it got to me.
But children and animals always pull at my heart strings!
I do hope you pick up A Mother's Goodbye!
I was promised an emotional story and boy oh boy it was absolutely true. As soon as you open the book, the emotions jump out of it and grab you by the throat. I assure you they won’t let you go until the last word. So you are warned and you can brace yourself.
The book was unputdownable but I had take a breather now and then because it was so heavy.
It’s not easy to write a book and I think it’s even more difficult to be able to make your readers feel story and not only read it. This author certainly knows how to pull your heartstrings. Maybe I felt it more because I am a mom as well, but even if you are not I am sure you wish you had the box of tissues handy.
5 stars are not enough. I highly recommand it.
Thank you Kate Hewitt, Bookouture and Netgalley.
It was so, so hard to put this book down once I had picked it up. I spent a lot of time in work, at home, while cooking, in the shower (you get the point) just thinking about it. What would I do in either mother’s situation? How would this new development in their lives affect them both? It was full of twists I honestly never saw coming.
Unlike a lot of multi narrative books, this was very easy to follow. Everyone’s speaking parts were clearly laid out, and the time jump was easy to sit into.
Heather can, at times, be hard to read. I have never given a child up for adoption, so I can’t begin to imagine how it is. But, I do agree with some of the characters that she was more than a little obsessed with her other child, and maybe a bit of an absent parent for her three daughters already at home.
There were some rather repetitive parts of this book, and a couple of cliché sentences that left me rolling my eyes.
Heather, a struggling mother of 3 finds out she is pregnant with #4. With money tight and her husband unable to work seeks out adoption in which we meet grace.
Grace is everything Heather is not. Grace wants a family, has not been able to.
The two women come together. Very emotional, could be a bit hard for those who struggle to have a baby.
Thank you again Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I would like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘A Mother’s Goodbye’ written by Kate Hewitt in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Heather, husband Kevin and their three little girls struggle to get by since Kevin injured his back in a workplace accident. When Heather realises she’s pregnant she knows they can’t keep the baby as the family depend on the money from her part-time job to pay the bills.
Heather decides to have the baby adopted and believes she’s found the perfect mother for her baby in Grace, a wealthy business-woman who will be able to give the baby everything it could want for. Heather finds it hard to relinquish responsibility for the baby but as the years pass both Heather and Grace form a friendship. When tragedy strikes a lot of decisions must be made and the two women’s lives are intertwined in a way neither could have expected.
When I started reading ‘A Mother’s Goodbye’ I expected an ordinary run-of-the-mill novel about family life and choices, but this novel was so much more than anything I’d anticipated. The description of the death of Grace’s father was harrowing and brought a lump to my throat, but when I was about three-quarters of the way through the tears started and didn’t stop. I don’t think I’ve read a novel before than has affected me so emotionally but I had to keep reading and when I wasn’t reading I was thinking about it.
Kate Hewitt has to be congratulated for producing such a wonderful and moving novel with a heart-breaking twist, written with compassion and sensitivity. It’s a gripping, dramatic story, beautifully written, that will stay in my thoughts forever.
Maybe I wasn't in the mood for another book in this genre. It was predictable and I ended up skimming through the second half. No surprises...
Heather and Grace, two women who couldn't be more different from each other but have one thing in common, the love for their child.
Heather finds herself in an impossible situation when she finds out she is pregnant. Already struggling to put food on the table since her husband's accident, how will they cope with a fourth child?
Grace loses her father and realises she is all alone in life due to focussing on her career. What she wants more than anything is a child to love and share her life with.
These two women are about to embark on a journey that will bond them together for the rest of their lives, whether they want it to or not.
The book switches between Heather and Grace's point of view and this is perfect for this story as the two main characters and their experiences are so different. We get to hear about Heather's battle with her emotions in deciding to give up her fourth child and how Grace copes when the terms of the adoption change. We also get to know Heather's family and how they deal with the aftermath of giving up a child. It is written so personally that you really feel like you get to know the characters and are a part of their lives. I could empathise with both characters and understand both points of view. I found myself agreeing with Grace in one chapter then sympathising with Heather in the next.
Over the years we witness how Heather and Grace's relationship evolves, a relationship that has its ups and downs but in the end, they are brought together in a way that neither of them ever imagined.
I really enjoyed this book and thought it was a really gripping story. This is a very emotional story and I'm not ashamed to tell you I had to put this book down and step away from it a few times because I couldn't stop crying. I love a book that can create these sorts of reactions from the reader and despite feeling heartbroken towards the end I still couldn't put this book down! I was really happy with how the book ended and am pleased that Kate didn't go down the obvious road with it.
Thanks to Netgalley for my copy.
Heather is a mother of three girls and a depressed husband who is unable to work because of an industrial accident. They are struggling to make ends meet when Heather discovers she is pregnant. In desperation she turns to a private adoption agency.
Grace is a high flyer who is devastated by the death of her father. This leads Grace to make a serious assessment of her life which leads to drastic changes.
This is a powerful story of love and heartbreak. I read this book with tears streaming down my face in some parts. It is real, visceral and so emotional. I felt so much empathy for both the women and could understand totally their points of view, both at the time of the birth and in the ensuing years. The gut-wrenching decisions that had to be made were so realistic and so poignant. Will definitely be looking for more by this author.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the Publisher, Bookouture for this review copy given in exchange for an honest review. Also thank you to Kim from Bookouture for organising the Blog Tour!
Heather has just found out that she is pregnant. It couldn’t have come at a worse time for her – her husband is on reduced disability benefits due to an industrial accident and they barely have enough money to support the children they have. When Heather finally plucks up the courage to tell her husband, he goes mad and implies she needs to sort it out. Heather knows she can’t terminate her pregnancy, but then she meets Grace. Grace is wealthy, single and desperate for a baby. Heather makes the decision to give the baby up for adoption and wants Grace to be the adoptive mother.
My first book by this author. By reading the blurb you know it’s going to be an emotional read, and I was already reaching for the tissues by the end of the first chapter. You immediately feel for both of the main characters who have already gone through so much in their lives. Heather obviously has to make a difficult decision – her baby or her family, with her husband insistent that they can’t have both. Grace just wants a baby to love and following the recent death of her father she just feels very lonely.
I won’t give away any more of the plot, but it’s safe to say it’s not an easy book to read. There are so many different emotional subjects, it just feels like you’re on a rollercoaster ride full of sympathy, grief, sadness and sorrow. That does make it sound like it’s a whole book of sadness though, which it’s not! It’s also full of love, affection and warmth.
A highly recommended read, just keep your tissues close by – you’re going to need them!
