This is the first volume of the story of Jonas and his adventure through to the Wormworld.
I overall enjoyed this, and what I loved about this were the illustrations - absolutely gorgeous, although perhaps a little feminine. I think this might move on to being a great fantasy adventure, but perhaps not for all kids - some of it might be a bit scary especially for those with vivid imaginations. I also wasn't a fan of the way the relationship with Jonas and his father was portrayed, and I felt some of the language wasn't appropriate and almost too grown up in spots.
If I am being perfectly honest, this book was not for me. I read it with my 7 year old son and he wasn’t very interested either. I personally just didn’t like the way it was written and described and found the blue bubbles quite annoying frankly. Thank being said I think it’s very likely others would enjoy this book. I wish there had been more action, I feel as if this would’ve made the book more exciting. It’s a very short book and not much really happens so you have to wait for the next book to really get into I bet.
This graphic novel has a ton of potential. It stopped a bit too abruptly for me though, I really wanted to see and learn more. The artwork was gorgeous. Incredibly detailed, beautiful colours, it looks like something out of an animated movie hence the reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 3. I’ll definitely be checking out the next installment. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the free copy and the opportunity to review it.
I am completely in love with this children's graphic novel. The illustrations are stunning, and full of vibrant colors, and the story line is basically what every child imagines. Jonas finds a secret trap door in his grandmothers old house that leads to another world full of adventures. A definite recommend!
I have received a much appreciated digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
The Wormworld Saga is a digital graphic novel that bundled up the first three chapters into a hardcover book. The artwork is gorgeous (the cover was the reason that I picked this book up in the first place) and the characters are drawn wonderfully. This volume is a little light on story as it introduces us to the main character Jonas, a student that spends more time drawing sketches and daydreaming than paying attention to lessons, on the last day of elementary school. He is struggling with classes and has to do homework over the summer. His summers are spent at his grandmother's house and in the forest behind her house when his imagination can go wild. A portal to another world is opened and Jonas steps through.
I would have liked a bit more about the portal world but I am interested enough to pick up future volumes. This book definitely seems geared towards children and my 8 year old was a fan. Good introductory fantasy graphic novel.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
The Wormworld Saga Volume 1: The Journey begins is a graphic novel about Jonas, a boy who has just finished elementary school, and the adventures he has at his grandma's house during the summer. While there, he discovers a portal to another world.
The illustrations in this graphic novel are beautiful, and the story is very intriguing. I can't wait to see what happens next in the series! I would recommend this to graphic novel lovers of all ages.
The end of the book contains information about how the series came to be.
This was a very short graphic novel and the first part to the saga. The illustrations were great however I would have liked more depth. This would be great for a younger audience.
A young boy visits his grandmother for the summer and enters through a portal into another world before his cat accidentally closes the portal stranding him there. This is a really cute and fast read. Predominantly setup and backstory, but the art work is right up my alley and the storyline keeps you wanting more. This is definitely set up for future volumes that will be action packed.
A stunning graphic novel that will interest any fantasy fan, especially fans of portal fantasies (which I am).
Along with a story about an engaging young protagonist that readers will want to follow along with on his adventure. I was sad to see the book end and cannot wait to read more of Jonas's story. I know that I will be picking up the rest of the series.
I have been looking for a way to start reading more graphic novels because they are so short and I love the illustrations that are in them also a lot of booktubers are raving about them . I really enjoyed this graphic novel the illustrations and colors were beautiful wonderfully done and I could really relate to Jonas when he was struggling with school and wanting to get away from it all he is a really relatable character. Thank you Netgally .
The board game based in this comics was released in my country last month, and the aesthetics of the game set me in the path to find the comics! It didn't disappoint me! The drawings are awesome, presenting great woods with fantastic monsters and strange villages. The story is about a boy who lost his mother in a terrible accident - an accident that justifies his phobia for fire - a phobia that he will have to overcome in order to become a hero in another world!
With amazing, vibrant, and engaging art, this upper elementary to middle grade graphic novel is the perfect beginning to a classic escapist fantasy. The backstory of loss that is hinted at is not over done, but sufficiently sad and foreboding. The fantasy world is .weird and intriguing and a little scary, which is perfect. It hits just the right balance of creepy and beautiful so as not to outright scare the younger set.
My only "complaint" is that the book ends right when the main character is about to (presumably) discover the rest of the people in this new world, but I understand why it ends there. I just didn't want it to!
Highly recommended for fans of adventure, escapism, quests, fantasy, bugs, and creepiness!
The "Journey Begins" is a beautiful looking book and establishes an interesting setting for books to come. Jonas, the main character, is a young kid that's not doing well in school and is only interested in playing and daydreaming. Most of the book is setting up for this journey into this new world, and that's when it started to get pretty interesting. It ends before I'm satisfied, which on one hand means I'm going to definitely be reading book 2, but on the other hand I so wanted to see more of this cool world the author has invented in this book. Very much looking forward to book 2 and seeing how the characters progress.
I just finished reading The Wormworld Saga Vol 1: The Journey Begins. All I can say is WOW! It's a great beginning to what I think will be a memorable fantasy. The illustrations are rich and fantastic. The main character, Jonas, is a likeable character with lots of frailties but an adventurous heart - the perfect hero of a saga! I can't wait to read the rest of the story! In the last few pages, the illustrator/author talks about how the story came to be - a wonderful bonus.
Loved loved loved the artwork in this book. Intriguing start of the story, curious about how it will develoo further.
Wow! The Wormworld Saga is freaking incredible! Filled with lush illustrations and an engaging main character, this is an adventure that has hooked me completely! Whether a diehard fan of the online graphic novel, or someone new to the series, this book is a real delight.
At first I was disappointed to realize the last 25 pages or so were not more story, but then I realized the history of the process that Daniel Lieske used to create The Wormworld Saga was really interesting. The pages from his sketchbook were a real bonus.
This would be an ideal entry point to graphic novels for the middle grade crowd. I strongly recommend the book, but be prepared to be hooked and wanting more since this book only contains the first three chapters of a much longer story -- just enough to lay the background and basic building blocks to understand the Wormworld.
In “The Wormworld Saga: the journey begins” we get to meet Jonas. He’s a kid who hasn’t had an easy life so far. All he wants is just to be a kid and don’t think too much about school, learning and his future. As the title already reveals, this is the start of his journey into the Wormworld.
I was really impressed with the cover art, which made me very curious to see what Wormworld was all about. The artwork is just lovely. I really liked the style used for the characters and the epicness of the artwork from the fantasy world. However, I prefer the overall look to be a bit more sleek, just a bit more refined.
The story in this book is great. I love a little back story and The Wormworld Saga definitely gives you one. I’ve seen some reviews in which the build up was considered too long, but in a comic, I personally really like to get a back story and to be able to get a bit invested in the characters. We get to see what Jonas’ life is like, what he likes about it and why he wants to run away and how he eventually ends up in the Wormworld and starts his journey.
All in all, this was a fun start to a possible epic story and I can’t wait to read the next volume to see what Jonas has gotten himself into.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
So I was definitely looking forward to reading this one when I spotted the very magical cover on Netgalley. And I have to say that I did love it, but not so much the characters. Well, I could forgive the dad, but I just didn't like our MC.
Why? Because really, he just thinks about playing, playing, and having fun. I get that it is summer, but if you are going to high school after summer (which I totally don't be believe given the little dude is 9/10 at max) you will need to get to working. Especially if your grades already suck so badly and only seem to get worse. Sorry, but do you want me to feel sorry for you? And then you try to do that crap to your poor dad who just has the best intentions for you? Who just wants you to succeed and be happy. It is not like his is forcing you to do your homework 24/7. The least you could do is just make those sheets and do some work. You probably have like 12 hours in a day, you can easily lose 1 hour a day to studying. And then when everything hits the fan, because, duh, instead of acting more like the age he is probably supposed to be (high school age so 12-ish), he just runs away. *sighs*
Also more than half of this book is about our kid just running around, telling us his story, and being annoying about stuff. It isn't until page 66 when he finally gets to the world, gets lost in it, can't go back to his home. While I do appreciate that we don't immediately go into the world, I still had expected us to go a bit sooner.
The art? Well, the backgrounds are gorgeous, especially those in the fantasy world are just stunning. However, I am not a fan of the characters and how they look.
The fantasy world seems to hold a lot of potential, and while I am not too sure if I want to read another volume in this series, I also do want to read it, just to see more of this spectacular fantasy world and its inhabitants. To see more of those gorgeous backgrounds. And plus, I want to know if the boy gets home and if we get the cliche ending I think we will be getting (as I have read enough books with the same kind of theme).
All in all, a pretty decent first volume, but yeah, the MC was just frustratingly annoying.
First of all: loved the artwork! It's somewhat children's book-y, but still intricate and beautiful. For me, artwork has such a huge importance when I'm reading graphic novels, and this one did not disappoint at all.
The story itself is also really good. It's a nice introductory tale into the story of Jonas and his adventures, and it makes me want to read more, more, more!
Great artwork in this graphic novel. Love the style too. An interesting story will keep our patrons happy as well.
