Shadowman (2108) Volume 1: Fear of the Dark finds Alyssa Myles without Jack Boniface and a Mambo priestess. Opening a portal to Deadside, Jack crosses back after a five years absence and has some catching up to do. A newly envisioned Shadowman comes to life in splendid color and wonderfully art that draws the eye. Some of the old characters appear not unexpectedly and Jack still needs to learn to control his power. The story unfolds rapidly and action-packed for a little fresher storyline, I found more enjoyable than the some of the last Shadowman graphic novels I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed the new feel to the story writing and love the new role Alyssa has taken on. Eerie and dark, the story draws the reader in and leaves you longer for more and a glimmer of hope that Jack will finally take down the monsters that plague his world for a refreshing, easy read. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.

I loved this graphic novel and flew right through it until I got to the final page which, of course, is a major cliffhanger. The New Orleans setting mixed with some old juju myths was a really cool take on this fantasy story. It contained magic, fighting, monsters and the land of the dead all portrayed through beautiful artwork with atmospheric drawing and colors. My only negative point is the many names and elements that aren't really introduced/explained so if you're not already into juju and voodoo, you might get confused: Alyssa (MC) is a mambo and former abettor, jack (MC) is Shadowman, there's Baron Samedi, Papa Legba, the Pantheon, the Ziwanda and so on.. my advice is to make little notes on the side while reading and then just enjoy the adventure.

This is really action packed graphic novel. Very different and unique story. Artworks are amazing. I really liked it and want to know what is going to happen next.

This was a very action-packed graphic novel. There is a lot going on in this slim volume. Will recommend to my patrons.

Shadowman (2018) Volume 1: Fear of the Dark
by Andy Diggle, Stephen Segovia

Don’t fear your demons…Fight them!
If you know me in real life you know I love all things, scary, Voodoo, and Witchy. When I was approved to read Shadowman, I squealed! I dove in and read it super quick then read it again.
Set in New Orleans, we follow Jack who is set to be the next in line of a long lineage of Shadowmen. They protect our world from scary worlds beyond ours.
We loved everything about this graphic Novel. He action was great, story was even better. Our favorite though was the illustrations. We may be biased because we have been following Stephen Segovia since
Dark Wolverine.
This is a definite buy! We loved it, you’ll love it, and your nerdy comic book loving girlfriend/boyfriend will love it!

I need to read more Shadowman books. I know very little about the character and this storyline has me hooked. This volume was super intense and the art is great.

Another great comic from the Valiant universe but it could have done with some intro or background.

The artwork was good as is usual from Valiant Comics and the story is fast paced with action and the supernatural, but without some kind of intro new readers will be lost. I was a bit disappointed that the last few pages of the arc copy were black and white with no dialogue. I think this is because it was an arc copy, but still if you want a comprehensive review of a comic then the reviewer should be given a fully comprehensive comic.

In any case I am sure this will be a five star comic when it is finished. Definitely a must for fans of the Shadowman.
