I just adore the Cottonbloom series! This installment, Set The Night on Fire (book 6 in the series) focuses on Ella and Mack's story. If you have read Cottonbloom #5, you'll know that a big event in that book was when Mack's brother Ford wanted to sell the Abbot Brothers' Garage, which has been in the family for years, to a wealthy lady (Sutton Mize, who also has a hotspot for Mack.......).
Ella and Mack are a sexy, sassy and fun couple and, as in other books in the story, there are a lot of hot moments between these two, as there always are in Cottonbloom books. Ella is a realistic and honest character who does not like dogs because of a past incident. River the dog is as much a part of the story as all the human characters. Willa took River in when she was dumped at her trailer park and they are inseperable.
Ella has a fight on her hands when she must try to conquer her fear of dogs and also realise what she truly feels for Mack at times.
There's plenty of tension and action in this gripping romance. What I love about Laura Trentham's books are that she really has a knack for getting inside characters' heads and representing their internal and external conflicts as well as backstory to create novels that I never want to finish. Jackson and Wyatt are also in this book as well as some mention of Megan's and Trevor's story.
Author Laura Trentham does an anmazing job of writing fast-paced, sexy romances set in the homely town of Cottonbloom. 5 stars. The plot and characterisation in this book is just as flawless as it is
Thanks to Laura Trentham and St Martin's Press for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I'm honoured to take part in both the Release Blitz and Blog Tour for this title. It was a real pleasure to "revisit" Cottonbloom again via the pages of this book. I hope that there are more books in the Cottonbloom series.
If you’re a fan of small-town romances with memorable characters, Laura Trentham’s Cottonbloom series will be for you. Set the Night on Fire, the sixth novel in the series, has the right combination of small town charm, sense of humor, and a sizzling enemies to lovers trope.
Mack is the stubborn Abbott whose life revolves around the garage that was his father’s legacy, and now Ella Boudreaux, a woman rumors say has taken everything from her ex- in a divorce settlement, owns a portion of the garage and seems to think she can interfere with its running.
Ella, however, is not who everyone thinks she is. In fact, she’s the one who added to her ex-husband’s wealth. She’s the one with the business savvy. And, now she’s the one with her ex-husband’s wife living with her. How did that happen? She’s also the one who bought a part of the garage for sentimental reasons.
Both Mack and Ella are big-hearted and so attracted to each other that they almost ignite when they come into contact. They are also written with so much depth, exuding good as well as bad qualities, that they seem like real people.
My only disappointment was the fact that Mac’s visit to see his estranged mother seemed too much like Jackson and Willa’s visit in When the Stars Come Out (you can read my review of that novel here)—you know, deja vu all over again.
While Set the Night on Fire is the sixth book in the Cottonbloom series, it is definitely a standalone. I never had that feeling of being inundated with characters from previous novels, although it was quite obvious that Mack’s brothers already had their own stories. At some point, I will happily go back in Cottonbloom time and read the other novels in the series as Trentham is now a must-read author for me.
Read this if you like small-town romance with humor and eccentric characters.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Mack is determined to make the garage something to be proud of, just like his father always wanted. He’s furious that his brother, Ford, sold his share to an outsider. He’s determined to figure out a way to get it back in the family’s hands.
Ella can’t change what people think of her, just how she thinks of herself. She’s so excited to own a share of a garage & is excited to help them expand. It’s a way for her to honor her dead brother. Too bad Mack wants her gone. Can they work something out?
Wyatt & Ella both have feelings & emotions from their pasts that they need to deal with before they can move forward. They are both distrustful of each other’s motives. The interactions between Mack & his brothers add an extra dimension to the story & brings home Mack’s distrust. He’s very stubborn & stuck in the past. Ella’s heart & emotion are perfectly illustrated in how she treats Megan. She opens her home & helps someone that could be considered her enemy. This was another enjoyable read & I hope the series doesn’t end here!
Ella Boudreaux is the real enemy of the Abbott Brothers. After all, she secretly bought Ford Abbott's share of the business and now she actually wants to work in the Abbott Brothers Garage in Cottonbloom, Louisiana! Big brother Mack is working as hard as he can to keep the business going. He can't understand why Ella wants to work in a garage! Sure, she is beautiful and smart but Mack is still trying to keep her out of the business and out of his mind! Yes, those gorgeous Abbott brothers are at it again! This time the story is about Mack and that suits me just fine. Laura Trentham has a way of developing characters so well that you feel like you've known them forever and can even visualize them in your mind! I love the Cottonbloom series! If you haven't read this series yet, you're in for a treat. Highly recommended for contemporary romance lovers!
Set the Night on Fire by Laura Trentham is available from St. Martin's Press. An egalley of this book was made available by the publisher in exchange for a honest review.
I'm a sucker for this series, set in small town Cottonbloom and featuring the Abbott brothers and the women they love (and who love them). The nice thing is that you don't need to read all of them in order to appreciate one because each features a different brother, in this case Mack. This is second chance romance for sure because Mack is angry and Ella, who has bought into the family business, is recovering from a dreadful marriage. These two are oil and water at first but in the interest of the business and then, well, love, things definitely improve! As always, you can guess how this will turn out but Trentham has a nice way of pacing the plot. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
I have loved all three of the Abbott brothers' stories! Wyatt and Jackson are great, but Mack's gruffness combined with his softer, fun side makes him my favorite Abbott brother. I liked Ella and thought that she was the perfect match for Mack. I loved the bonus epilogue featuring Wyatt and Sutton's wedding! What a great way to end the story.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary Advance Reader Copy from NetGalley.
Loved this story. Sparks and tempers ignite between Ella and Mack when Ella buys a quarter share of the Abbott Brothers garage business from the oldest brother who decided to sell and leave town. He had his reasons, which we see later in the story. Mack is the next in line and has always run the garage along with his twin brothers who are a few years younger. Their mother left them years ago and the father who passed away a few years ago made his life about the business. The garage is in the tiny town of Cottonbloom which is cut in two by a river. Ella buys the small piece of the business as an investment. She knew it would anger them but she was caught off guard by just how angry Mack was and could be. Having been through a physically and emotionally abusive marriage and now divorced, she's got her own investment business and she's doing well for herself. She's got a good head for business. She and Mack butt heads constantly while the twins and their respective wife and fiancé really like her. She's smart and doesn't take any crap from Mack which everyone else apparently has cowered before Mack. I liked the way the brothers ran the business, they vote. Nothing gets down without discussion. The one sticking point for them is their Mom which the twins have basically forgiven and Ford leaving because he needed to. Mack still can't get his head around that. When you through in their twin aunts, how pop in unexpectedly quite a bit, an upcoming wedding, Ella's ex who shows up and then the ex's current wife who had left him. Hysterical. Oh and the sparks that these two shoot every time they are around each other. After a couple aborted attempts, no fault of their own, these two make some page turning steam. They were a great couple I really liked them. I loved the story, the characters, the plot, the flow was a little slow for me but it still got there. Great read and yes, I'd recommend it for sure. Now I have to go back and read a couple of the previous books.
It's a great story and well done.

Set the Night on Fire continues the Cottonbloom series with Mack and Ella’s story. While society maven Ella may seem like Mack’s opposite, they have much in common. They both have demons that need fighting and are incredibly attracted to one another. Despite starting their relationship as adversarial partners in the Abbott family garage, they eventually find their happily ever after.
This next installment in the Cottonbloom series is everything I hoped it would be. Ella and Mack both have so much baggage to sort through, both between them and individually. And all is not resolved over night - they have to work for what they want.
Ella is the quintessential definition of “pull yourself up by your boot straps” or “making lemonade out of lemons” or some such cliche. But she’s strong, and fakes her confidence until she feels it, and goes after what she wants.
Mack has every intention of doing right by his family, attempting to make up for past wrongs he feels are his fault. He feels so strongly about this that it’s sometimes to the detriment of the family he’s trying to help. But I love that he’s not afraid to admit when he’s wrong, and not to proud to apologize.
This is hands down my favorite book of the whole series. I had a feeling Mack and Ella’s story would be intense and wonderful, and I’m so glad I wasn’t wrong.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book (from NetGalley). All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved this book!!! There was a beautiful, natural progression of the Ella's
love-interest relationship. The anticipation was unbelievable! This novel was very, very tastefully written, with more depth than I was expecting--a pleasant surprise! I enjoyed it very much (causing my husband some irritation) because I had a difficult time putting it down. I also had a deep appreciation for the uptown girl/grease monkey premise. I got the feeling that there might be a spin--off, possibly foreshadowed with the bonus epilogue, and I really hope there is one, because I would read that as well! Thank you to NetGalley and Laura Trentham for affording me the opportunity to read this novel.
Mack and Ella's love story was so sweet. I loved that Mack turned out to be such a softie. This is my first book that I have read by Laura Trentham and it won't be my last. Had me hooked right from the first page.
I loved this book so much I read it twice. It's the perfect romance. A heroine with a backbone who is a good friend to other women. A rugged hero who respects women. Supportive brothers. And if course a romantic happy ending. Now I'm off to look for more from this author!
This was y first book by this author and really enjoyed it! I love stories about strong families that overcome obstacles and preserve and this book didn’t disappoint! Although t times I felt I needed to read the book before, things would work out later in the story! Very Highly recommend. #netgalley#setthenightonfire
Ella just bought a share in Mac's garage. The garage he and his brothers have owned since their dad died. Mac is furious that his older brother Ford, sold his share to Ella but, the last thing he expected was to find himself insanely attracted to a woman who knew a lot about cars and, would stand face to face with him on any point. This book is filled with love of family, old history that comes bubbling to the top when you least expect it and, a steamy love story that you can't put down!
Ella thought she was in love when she was younger. She married the man, and found out his true colors. Her mother's marriage was no prime example either, and in fact, once she stopped giving her mother money, Ella learned more lessons about relationships and betrayal. The only one she can depend upon is herself. Yet, her big heart can not help her from reaching out and assisting others in need. Except her ex. He is in need of something Ella is not prepared to give.
Mack and his brothers own a garage. It has always been the family business and dream.
Mack doesn't much care for change. His brother Ford didn't share the garage dream, and when he had a chance, sold his share to Ella.
Full of grease and snide looks and comments, this is a getting to know you, and wish to get to know more about you, kind of romance. From wanting you out of my garage but into my bed sort of romance. It has a feel good quality about it.
Besides Ella's reawakening to life's potential and Mack's awakening to his heart's possibilities, this is a book about family and forgiveness.
I really love the Abbott brothers. I hope Ford gets his story too. After Ford sold his part of the garage to Ella, Mack keeps trying to buy it back from her. He wants only the Abbott family to be in control of the garage. Ella does have some really good ideas, but Mack is stubborn and doesn't like change. Sometimes he thinks he is too much like his father in that respect. As he and Ella work together and become closer, he realizes that he needs to make some changes in order to move on. He really needs to reconcile with his mom and his brother. Ella seems to have it all, but she really doesn't. She didn't have a good life growing up and she worked hard to get where she is. The best thing she did was divorce her abusive husband. She will never let any man dominate her again. Mack seems like he would be that way, but he also has a softer side. Will they be able to come to an agreement about the garage and move on with their lives?
5 - "You can't afford me, tough guy." Stars!
Set the Night on Fire takes us back to Cottonbloom, Mississippi, for what I am assuming is going to be the final Abbott brother to find his happily ever after.
"Wait her out, then buy her out."
Mack Abbott has been a very clear secondary presence in the previous two books, being the pseudo boss of Abbott Brothers Garage & Restoration since their fathers death, he takes his responsibility to his siblings seriously, even when his elder brother goes against the family out by selling his quarter share in the business to Ella Boudreaux, and outsider, not family, and a woman that seems to rub him up the wrong way. Initially that is…
"I’m a total bitch aren’t I..?"
"…It’s part of your charm."
This is my favorite of the three Abbott books, I loved Mack, and Ella provided a strong counterbalance to all his growly alphaness. As a divorcee with more than a little baggage, shes trying to forge her own way in the world, her part ownership in the garage just the tip of the iceberg. Her ideas are sound, his brothers aren’t as against her involvement as Mack would have liked, and what starts out as a prickly association soon starts to turn into something else entirely.
"Tell me your dreams…"
"Maybe someday… but not tonight. Tonight, I want the real thing."
Both characters hold their cards very close to their chest when it comes to displaying emotion, and dealing with their demons, but with each new thing they learn about the other they realize they have more in common than they originally thought.
She was a spring breeze teasing his hibernating heart.
I pretty much read this book in one sitting, I love this author’s books and I love getting to return to the setting in which this series has been based around. Although the Abbott’s have now all settled down, and the bonus epilogue tied everything off perfectly in that regard, I really hope Laura has some more stories to tell and characters to share with us with the town of Cottonbloom meandering along in the backdrop in the future.
I was actually trying a book from NetGalley that was similar in concept, small town romance where the character's trade is also a craft and not some fancy job, but just could not get into it. It was a delight to see this available for reading at NG... and to read from a writer who knows how to spin a story. I regretfully did not start with Book 1 in this series, but jumped in midway with the Abbotts. Nevertheless, it was a fine intro to Cottonbloom.

I feel that the people of Cottonbloom have become like extended family to me over the past couple of years, and it was like coming home diving into Set The Night On Fire.
I have been impatiently waiting for Mack and Ella's story since the previous book, and Ms Trentham has not disappointed.
I knew from the previous book that there was going to be sparks between our lovelies - just wasn't 100% sure if they would be sexual or hateful (note: we got a bit of both FYI!) They have more in common with each other than they think they do, and watching it all play out was a lot of fun.
I loved Ella's feistyness, Mack's broodiness and gruffness. I adored the rest of the Abbott boys and their ladies.
There is more to Set The Night on Fire than just Mack's love life. There is love, loss, family dramas, forgiveness.
I fell into this book, and read it in one afternoon, and I just want more!
I can't wait to see what Ms Trentham brings us next.
Really enjoyed the tempestuous relationship between Mack and Ellie. I don't recall reading any of the previous ones in this series. I wish I had, but it certainly didn't detract from reading this one. The intimate sexual details are usually easy for me to skip. I enjoyed the repartee between this couple so did skim rather than flip pages. Nice to see people reaching out to help others. The scars of life added to the tale.
