Don't Look Back by Dawn Ryder is a good fit for readers who enjoy stories about strong, independent women finding love and facing challenges in fast-paced, high-stakes environments.
I guess I didn’t realize that this book was part of a series when I requested it. I liked the suspense parts, but I did scan some of the beginning. I hate doing that but it wasn’t holding my interest. I felt lost trying to keep the characters straight. I imagine reading the previous books would have helped with that.
This is book 6 in the Unbroken Heroes Series. Shadow Ops Agent Thais as sworn off relationships so she can focus on work. Then she is slated to follow a man who could throw everything in her world up in the air. This was a fun romance to read.
This book was so entertaining. I was drawn into the story from the beginning and was involved until the end. The characters were complex and interesting. I found the story to be well paced and engrossing throughout the whole book. I was invested in the couple throughout the book and felt all the emotions through both the highs and lows of the story. The side characters were such an integral part of this story as well. This is the love story i needed to read at this time. If you want an entertaining and well written book this is it for you
The story was exciting. Thanis and Dunn have been playing cat and mouse for a while. Each watching and enjoying the game / attraction to eachother. Each have deep secrets in their lives. Dunn was born to the Delacrox dynasty ( his mom, Miranda, was brought up in the ultra powerful political family), when she met and became pregnant with a Scottish business man's child her family forced her to give up the love of her life and her child. Her family demanded she marry for political gain / not love.
Now that her husband is dead she is free to show her love /support for both her children. Miranda is now running for political office to make the world safer for her two adult children and her grandchildren.
Carl Davis has his sights of becoming the next president of the USA. He will do anything to win...including killing people.
Shadow ops has always been around working behind the scenes. Carl wants them gone. He can't control them, and he doesn't like that.
I would have given the book a better review /higher rating of the story wasn't so choppy.
This is the first book that I have read by Dawn Ryder and also in this series. But was told that this book can be read as a stand-alone book. But you cannot! I was very confused on the storyline and who these characters were. It was very clear to me that these characters had some development through the last 5 books that I hadn’t read. The overall story arc was also confusing to me and I never really caught onto it, so it wasn’t very enjoyable.
Thais Sinclair was part of a special ops team which initially I really loved. This coupled with her fierce, brave and outspoken personality it was the type of character right up my alley. But I found that Ryder really liked repeating the fact that she was in Special Ops and was fierce and brave and I felt that was an over kill. Dunn Bateson is a civilian which was also overly mentioned here. With all that said I did enjoy the action and the suspense and that’s really what kept me reading this book. I would recommend reading this if you’ve started at the beginning of the series. Happy reading!
Dawn Ryder never disappoints. Sex, exciting and dangerous all in one. This is a wonderful character driven book.
My first read o Dawn Ryder and I must say it was a decent read, considering I haven't read any of the previous books in the series. So it doesn't really read as a standalone per say, but you will not feel completely clueless either.
There's enough suspense and intrigue to keep the readers interested. I may pick up the others in the series.
Having read some of Dawn Ryder's previous works, I have to admit that Don't Look Back is not my favourite. I speeded through the first half of this book. Some of the characters were annoying to read and the ending was lackluster to say the least. However, the action and suspense was at least entertaining enough to keep me invested in continually reading this story.
I had to force myself to finish this one. It wasn't as good as I had hoped. It's also part of a series, and I didn't realize that when I requested it. Overall, I finished it so it was okay. The romance was there, the suspense was there. It hit those marks well enough.
I will preface this review by saying that I have. not read other books in the series, so I cannot evaluate it based on prior knowledge of the series. With that said, this absolutely cannot be read without having read something from the previous books. The story jumps right in and without context, I never could figure out the characters or plot. Many pages have at least 5 different characters mentioned and when there is no background on them, you will be lost. Even without having read other books, I still believe there were far too many characters to keep up with. The romance part between Thais and Dunn begins in this book, so that is the only part I was able to follow. 1-2 stars if you have not read any other books in the series.
*3.5 stars*
Good ending to the series…
I was looking forward to Thais’ story and having her get together with Dunn made for a great combination. They were both so focused on the job that they didn’t seem to realize all the antagonism would feed their relationship…
Thais was a strong, kick-a** woman who held her own in a testosterone-fueled profession. There was no denying her capabilities but she was also a woman and one Dunn could not resist. And Dunn. Well, he was a fighter and ended up being one of my favourite characters in the series.
Together, they created a tempest and provided the perfect ending to the series.
Overall, this was a good series. I think it would have been a great one if I could have connected more with the characters. The series improved with each book though so I look forward to what this author has in store…
I enjoy the action and it was great to see characters from the past books come together! This is the final book in this series. I agree with some of the other reviews that mentioned this isn't a standalone, so I'd recommend reading the previous books before this one. Each book does feature a different main couple, but with this being the final book with the ending of the series long storyline, the others should be read first. I like the intrigue in this series, but the writing doesn't flow very well. There's also way too many povs; do we really need 2 hitmen's povs, when there are already so many other povs. All those povs muddle the story. The bad guys are truly deplorable, so I definitely wanted them to get taken down; I'm satisfied with what happened there, but I do wish that there was more exposure.
Thais and Dunn are the focal point couple in this book. They do have some hot chemistry and some pretty good sex scenes. I liked them together; I could feel the depth of passion they feel for each other. Dunn was great; I liked how protective he was of Thais. I liked that he called out her "team" for using Thais. The whole using sexual means to gain things is just sad. Thais acts strong on the outside, but she's a sad mess on the inside. Her so-called "team" doesn't really act like a true team that is there for each other. I like her, but I didn't like how childish she was at times. I was hoping she'd kick more butt in this book.
Overall, a sweet, sexy romance with some good action, but I don't connect with the writing style; too jumbled.
Shadow Ops Agent Thais Sinclair has sworn off falling in love for good. It’s what’s kept her calculated, steady, and on-task in a world dominated by men. She needs nothing and no one but her own wits and strength to guide her. But when she’s slated to shadow the one man who could reveal their entire operation, all bets are off. Dunn Bateson, illegitimate son of a Southern debutante, has always had to fight harder than the rest to get what he wants. Now, the last thing he needs is Thais following his every move. She is so strong, sly, seductive. . . No woman has ever captivated him so completely. Thais may only have room for her mission in her heart, but is Dunn up to the challenge of showing her that she’s worth every risk he is willing to take?
This was a decent story that was mostly wrapping up a series. I felt that because of that, the romance was more a side character, which is ok. I’ve enjoyed the entire series from this author and I look forward to reading her next series. I recommend as long as you’ve read the rest of the books in the series.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
Unbroken Heroes book 6 is Thais and Dunn's tale guaranteed to keep the pages turning.
Ebook from netgalley and publishers with thanks. Opinions are entirely my own.
Updated 5/14/19: I finally got around to reading the first 5 books in the series and everything made a lot more sense.
This is the 6th book in the Unbroken Heroes series and from what I understand now the last book in the series. I haven't read the other books in the series, and now I wish I had before reading this one. I was confused with all the characters and who belonged together. This book is not meant to be a stand-alone book, in my opinion.
I loved Miranda and her stubbornness in taking care of her family from Carl Davis who wants nothing more than to be president. I found it difficult to really follow some of what was happening, perhaps that was because I didn't read the other books first.
Good story, but confusing to me!

I had a hard time following the story in this book as I didn't read any others in the series and there was clearly a lot of backstory. Maybe the layout on my kindle was off too, but the story seemed to transition from sub plot to subplot/character to character in a manner that was hard to follow. Overall, it was okay.
What happens when you swear off love for good? Life interferes and gives you what you least expect. Thais was too busy being an Agent to give into Dunn’s demands. She took her role seriously and when all hell breaks loose she must remain a pillar of strength. Dunn finally lets go the ghosts of the past and stand by his mother’s side when threats continue to threaten them all. Great series!
I wasn’t sure if this book would be the culmination of the Carl Davis feud. He’s been targeting Miranda and the people she loves to bring her to heal. That includes her son, Dunn. He may be a recluse but he knows how to protect his family. If that means he has to let Thais, from the Shadow Ops team into his life, so be it.
Dunn and Thais’s interactions are awkward at best. They seemed to talk in riddles when they’re together. I had a tough time thinking that they even liked each other. They talked about their chemistry but I didn’t feel it in their interactions.
The parts of the story that made it worth reading were Carl Davis and his attempts to dethrone Miranda. I was glad I stuck with it because the ending was excited and unexpected. That’s why I give 4 stars.
This one was really hard for me to get into. It seemed to bounce around a lot and felt disjointed. It could have to do with the fact I haven't read the others in this series and just felt really lost.
