after reading this story it has introduced me to a new author so i will be purchasing her other books , would highly recommend
A dramatic beginning that successfully introduces the main characters and quickly involves the reader in the life of this family as they experience the complicated tangles of emotions and events
A well-balanced narrative of historical description and feeling creates a believable and fascinating world for the reader to become immersed in..
Thank you to NetGalley and Canelo Books for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
I didn't know this was the second in a series but it did work fine as a standalone. This is the story of the Harvey family, set five years after the Great War. I love reading family historical dramas and this one kept me hooked. This is the first book I have read by Gloria Cook but it won't be the last. I thought the plot flowed well with interesting characters and I was impressed at how well researched the book was.
This story is set after the Great War and is more usual of the book I’m attracted too, and I wasn’t disappointed. It follows Emilia and her husband Alec, and is the second book in the series (the first is Touch the Silence which I haven’t read) and her life on the farm and focuses on the family relationships, their friends and children and includes tragedy, love, intrigue and more. I want to tell you more, but I’m sure I’ll give the story away if I do but I really want you to read this one for yourself - I liked it that much, and I hope there’s another one to come.
An entertaining read. Would recommend this author and their works. Can't wait to see what else they have to offer.
The story follows the Harvey Family after the great war. This is my first book by Gloria Cook but it was easy to get into as a stand alone book. It was very well researched which made it a compelling read read. I was unable to put it down. The family dynamics were intriguing and made for good reading, Excellent read.
Book two follows on Emilia's story. Now in the aftermath of War she struggles with the different opinions of the Brothers over the farm as they have contrasting ideas and her relationship with Alec is put under immense strain as he struggles with the diagnosis of their newly born third child.
This book was a much a entertaining roller coaster as the first and I'll be keenly reading on in the series.
My thanks go to the author, publisher and Netgalley in providing this arc in return for a honest review.
This is the second book about Harvey family now the war has finished, but it involves another tragedy nearer
to home and the effects this has on a family. Well written and good follow on from Touch the Silence
A story set on a farm with many twists and turns when it comes to relationships Alec and his wife both desire other people and with that comes secrecy and tragedies for all involved some interesting characters in this book which makes for a good read think it would appeal to older readers enjoyable novel
Didn’t realise it was a series and the second book so had to put it down and purchase the first one as I hate reading books in the wrong order. But will review again once I’ve read it. Gutted it wasn’t the first in the series
This is a large panoramic family saga, with affairs of the heart, farming families, illegitimate children being handed over for others to bring them up, and one man recovering from losing his leg in the 1914-1918 war. The female characters in this story are strong, and independent women, who can hold their own in this small farming community. The male characters seem like their loins are forever ready for any available woman.
The family relationships re deep and complicated. Even the servants are found falling in love with their masters, or mistresses. Some of the encounters are buzzing with passion, and unbridled lust, and written about in astonishing detail!
I am hoping this is just the first in a series, and I would be interested in reading any sequels.
Very enjoyable and easily readable. Enjoyed the book so will now look out for the rest of the series. Definitely recommended.
The war is over. Life must go on. The hardships are tragic but love will find a way through. Family relationships are strained but bold is thicker than water.
Excellent story line which was gripping from start to finish. Great characters. I would highly recommend this book.
This is the 2nd book of a series by Gloria Cook. I read the first book and so was looking forward to reading this. It continues on with what has been happening in the Harvey's family life. New people come into their lives with an impact that could have dire consequences for Emily if others found out what was going on. This is yet another moving book and can't wait to read the next book.
I really enjoyed this book about the Harvey Family.I hadn't read the first book but found it very easy to get into as a standalone book. The story starts five years after WW1 finished and explores the lives of the Harvey Family and friends,I can try to imagine how it must been in those times with so many losses and the men that did come home some so badly injured physically or mentally. This is one of those books that is very hard to put down ,just one more chapter !the characters were all believable and well written .Just fabulous !
Many thanks to the Publisher, the Author and NetGalley for my review copy in return for an honest review.
Unfortunately I lost interest quarter a way through the first book so due to that reason I have not attempted this one - apologies
This is the second book in a series about the Harvey family. The Great War is over and Emilia and Alec settle into married life. Things between Alec and Ben are still awkward and Tris is left in the middle as peacekeeper. Following on from Touch the silence we watch the ups and downs of the family and the staff as they move on from the war. Trouble arrives when Alec rents out Tris’s old house to Perry and his sister Selina will things ever be the same again after their arrival to the village. An enjoyable read
Whatever next for the Harvey family, I wonder? Like real life you can't be certain of anyone. Love and lust, birth and death are all intertwined to make a further gripping instalment of the family saga
Just like the first book in this series I just couldn’t put this down. After reading the first book this was almost like catching up with old friends. The story continues from book 1 but could also be read as a stand alone book. The characters form a family saga told through generations. War, love, infidelity this saga has it all. Thank you to netgalley for the opportunity to try another author. On to book 3!
