I loved this book so much that I bought a copy!
I have been a vegetarian for 30 years. I am so impressed with the wealth of information and recipes and availability of ingredients for a whole food plant based diet.
I read The China Study a couple of years ago and the evidence that eating more plants and less meat and dairy is attributed to a reduced risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease is astounding.
I was looking for a cookbook that would give me baking recipes that did not include eggs and this one did. And they were delicious! I made the blueberry coffee cake and the coconut oatmeal cookies! We have also tried Apple Lemon bulgur salad. I am looking forward to making the Panana Pancakes this weekend or maybe the Apple Pie pancakes. My husband wants to try to no-egg huevos rancheros and the Apple Gingerbread Upside-Down cake!
I will be posting photos of the recipes I make from this cookbook with info on the cookbook on my social media!
I was looking for a good whole foods cookbook with tasty recipes and this is the perfect book for that. The recipes, information throughout the book and pictures are amazing. Highly recommend buying The TChina Study Cookbook.
THE CHINA STUDY COOKBOOK is also scheduled to be available this week in a revised and expanded edition which will contain over 175 whole food, plant-based recipes. Compiled by LeAnne Campbell, this cookbook devoted a significant portion at the beginning to explaining the rationale for choosing a plant-based focus. It's rather text-heavy although the colorful chart comparing the nutrient content of three lunches (Rice Salad, Peanut Butter & Jelly, or Hot Dog) would be informative for our Health classes. That section is followed by more discussion of possible substitutes and chef's tools. The recipes seemed somewhat more complex and used, of course, specialized ingredients like whole wheat pastry flour and non-dairy milk (rice, soy or almond). The categories range across breads, appetizers, soups, sandwiches, entrees and desserts. Again, the pictures are beautiful, but surprisingly there is no nutrition information with each recipe.
"The China Study Cookbook" is a whole food, plant-based (vegan) cookbook with recipes that use no added fat and lower amounts of sugar and salt. Most of the recipes were for 4-6 people and were fairly easy to make. The author started by talking about why she eats a whole food, plant-based diet, about the program she runs, and cooking tips like substitutes for animal products (dairy, eggs) and oil.
There were recipes for 13 breads and muffins (and fruit butters), 23 recipes for breakfast dishes (coffee cake, jams, french toast, crepes, smoothies, oatmeal, granola, pancakes, etc.), 27 recipes for appetizers and salads, 15 recipes for soups, 20 recipes for sandwiches and wraps, 30 recipes for entrees (burritos, pasta, stew, etc.), 25 recipes for sides (beans, beets, corn, sauces, etc.), 23 recipes for deserts (pies, cakes, cookies, etc.).
I've tried a few of the recipes and enjoyed them. Overall, I'd recommend this cookbook to people who are interested in adding more whole-food, plant-based meals to their diet.
interesting book if you want to get into a non-meat cookbook. Several caught my eye, and will give a try, although sadly many have way too many ingredients, and ones not common around here. More alternative choices or suggestions would make this much more user friendly. Otherwise, a book I highly recommend.
5 healthful stars to The China Study Cookbook! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
A friend of mine who talks nutrition with me regularly is all about The China Study. I have been interested in learning more because it fits with how I eat (mostly- I still eat dairy, though not with every meal).
I don’t know if it’s just me, but it is much easier for me to eat healthier during the summer. It is hot, I am not as hungry, I am outside more (not eating), and fruits and vegetables are even more plentiful. When I spent some time with the China Study Cookbook recently, I knew THIS would be my cookbook of choice this summer, and I absolutely cannot wait to try out these recipes and start feeling even better again, as a result.
This way of eating is based on research, such as how a plant-based diet helps heal heart disease, eliminate obesity, and lower cancer risk. I am not going to preach a way of eating to anyone (there are so many choices and lots of research available), but I am pleased that if I choose to eat this way, research backs it up.
The author of the cookbook is the daughter of one of the co-authors of the actual China Study, and she has been living in the Dominican Republic, so many of these recipes are inspired by the local food she eats there, as well as the produce available. I happen to love these types of foods, and I can see myself making most every recipe. Not everything is spicy or inspired by the DR, though. There is plenty of variety with all my favorite ingredients. Recipes like Coconut Corn Chowder, Peanut Kale Soup, and Baked Tomatoes Stuffed with Lentils are calling my name asap.
Cookbook details: neatly organized recipe pages, beautiful color photos of every recipe, and lots of background information make this a well-rounded and well-presented cookbook. I especially enjoyed the information on how she raised her children eating a plant-based diet.
I cannot describe to you my excitement and inspiration as a result of reading this cookbook. I wish I could bottle how I feel right now and keep it with me year-round, but until then, I’ll making shopping lists and planning my meal prep for the next couple months! Seriously.
If you are a plant-based eater, you may want to check this out for more inspiration, and if you are like me, you are always looking for fresh recipes. If you are not eating plant-based, but you would like to add more plant-based meals, this is wonderful place to start.
Thank you to LeAnne Campbell, BenBella Books, and Netgalley for the ARC. The China Study Cookbook will be available on June 5, 2018!
I LOVE this book and I love Asian food! The recipes are simple and easy to follow and the photos are beautiful!
