I love Christine Feehan! I was so excited to see a new book by this author, they never disappoint me. Just what I needed to transport me from my ‘boring life’ into some escapism. I loved everything about this book from the cover to the contents. I cant wait to read more. This series is one of my favorites.

4.5 Hearts It is hard to believe that after 27 stories Feehan can come up with something new and different to write about and yet she does in this story. And then some!

Feehan is one of the queens of paranormal in my opinion. She easily draws you into each character and their story.

Who doesn’t enjoy a good vampire story? Well if it is not your genre of choice turn away now but if it is then pick up this series. I want to say these stories are not a stand alone. They really need to be read in order to understand exactly who and what is going on.

This is just another great story in this great series.

This is book 28 in the Carpathian series. This story belongs to Andor who is near death and Lorraine who is camping nearby who saves him from 3 men who think he is a vampire. I have not read many in this series but I had no problems enjoying the story and learning about the Carpathian race. Lorraine is Andor's life mate and he has been searching for her for centuries. The battles with the vampires are gearing up and attacks are frequent and tricky. Fans of the series will love it. If you haven't read previous books it's a good one to try. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The Carpathians are back and this latest books rejuvenates the series. This book can be read as a standalone and is a good one to pull new readers in as well as bring old readers back. Ms. Feehan brings back what I love about this series with her two latest characters. Better yet, this character driven story pulls me in and I'm invested in how the story ends.

Lorraine Peters is a woman trying to reconcile and put to away the demons in her past. What happened to her brother, parents and relatives is a terrible tragedy. Rather than running away, she is actively seeking to to understand and make sense of it all. I admire Lorraine and how she sticks to her principles. Her backstory creates a more complex character. It is good to see Ms. Feehan return to more layered characters who are driven by multiple motives and have experiences which form their uniqueness. Lorraine is a character who is hard to forget. It helps that I prefer strong women who have a plan and work towards it. Lorraine may be feeling lost for a while, but she isn't waiting for a white knight to come save her. Her ability to save herself is nicely done as it counters
Andor Katona's understanding of how the world works.

Andor is centuries old immortal who is a product of his times. Learning to adjust to the new way women think and behave is a not easy. The interaction between the two and how Andor and Lorraine connect on several levels is a pleasure to see. Their relationship and how they grow closure to each other is what keeps this book cohesive and interesting. Their push pull of dominance is more a testing to see how they can work together rather than a constant aggravating fight. This style works better for me because there are no right or wrong answers. Instead, it is "growing" pains as two people get to know each other.

Whilst this romance is blooming, the continued arc of the turned vampire reveals more hidden intrigues. At this point in this series, I have come to accept that this evil will never end. There will always be some other male who has turned and somehow there is another big bad evil. I confess to losing interest in that particular plot as it is the same thing over and over again with no ending.

From a romantic perspective, there are some sexual interludes between the Lorraine and Andor. They are sweet and tame. Personally, they did nothing for me as I'm a jaded erotic romance reader and anything vanilla I tend to skip over. Still, for romance readers who enjoy a bit of play between the sheets, Lorraine and Andor do heat it up.

This paranormal romance is recommended to readers who love strong female leads and the strong males who love them.

The Anita Blake series keeps getting better and better. I couldn't put it down. Full of suspense and craziness that has become normal for Anita. Can she have a romantic weekend with her fiance's without work getting in the way?
The writing is so good. It'll suck you into Anita's mind. The storyline flows well and moves quickly.

As the 28th installment of the Dark series, can Dark Sentinel be read as a standalone?

Yes.

Almost a decade ago, I bought the Anniversary Edition hardcover of Dark Prince and haven't read more in the series since. Thankfully I remembered bits and pieces of the world-building, enough so that I wasn't confused. But to be honest, I don't believe anyone would struggle if they read this as a standalone.

For returning readers, I was pleased there weren't any info-dumps of past books' events regurgitated in the beginning of the novel (this would have spoiled those books I've yet to read but plan to read). This practice is popular in paranormal romance and urban fantasy genre, where if you already read past books, this barrage of information slows the pacing down, and if you're a new reader, it ends up being too much-too soon, causing more confusion. So I applaud Christine Feehan for finding the right amount of information to ease in new readers while keeping past readers' interests.

With all that being said, Dark Sentinel whet my appetite to return to Dark Prince and start the series from the beginning.

A good portion of the novel takes place in the opener's setting. Andor is gravely wounded (pun intended) and telepathic Lorraine comes to his rescue from her campsite nearby, with a soup pot. While lying there dying, Andor is filled with emotion as the world becomes a burst of color (this is world-building that I won't go into great detail)

With a fated-mates premise, I was pleased that it didn't seem overly insta-love. Lorraine is a martial artist, who is dealing with a horrific tragedy that left her alone in this world, filling her with grief and guilt and shame. While on a self-exploratory journey to find her inner calm, Lorraine finds just the opposite.

Nothing was as humorous as an ancient thinking over how his mate will be different than the others, having to handle Lorraine differently since she is a 'modern' woman. We modern women refuse to listen and obey just because he said so. Lorraine did just defend Andor's prone body, clearly he's going to have his hands full.

Throughout the novel, I met other intriguing characters, who most certainly had me eager to start at the very beginning. I found the world-building to be unique, how the Carpathians lose their emotions and ability to see in color as they age, due to half their soul residing in their mate, who may or may not even be walking the earth during that generation. Intriguing.

There's a reason this series is 28 books strong. Feehan writes with maturity, with a mix of fantasy, romance, and violence, to offer one heck of an engrossing read.

I look forward to starting the series from the beginning when I find a large slice of time to fully immerse myself. Definitely recommend to fans of the author and series, as well as to new readers who enjoy paranormal romance.

DARK SENTINEL is, in my opinion, one of author Christine Feehan's very best offerings in her Carpathian series. It follows closely to DARK LEGACY with the ancient Carpathians coming to work with Tariq, the prince's choice of leader in this new war. We learn more about these men who are learning to deal with a modern world. What I found heartwarming or maybe a little heartbreaking is that though they might no longer feel emotions, they do find a sister in Lorraine and will protect her as they would their own blood.

DARK SENTINEL is action packed with the group of Ancients (and Lorraine) fighting vampires, puppets and protecting humans where they can. Add in the sweet and hot romance between Lorraine and Andor and you will not want this book to end.

"Dark Sentinel," the latest in Christine Feehan’s long-running paranoramal romance series features one of her most likeable heroines yet. Lorraine Peters is strong, intelligent, and is trained in martial arts. We first meet her when she comes to the aid of Andor Katona.

Andor is a Carpathian, an ancient being who subsists on blood and is a hunter of vampires, who are Carpathians who have embraced evil and kill humans. Carpathians eventually lose all emotions and color from their sight unless they have found their lifemate, the woman who holds the other half of their soul and who can keep them from becoming vampires. Andor has been searching for hundreds of years for his lifemate without success, but still enduring night after night of battling vampires.

When Lorraine finds him, Andor has been attacked by human vampire hunters who came upon him while he was in a weakened state after a battle with vampires. The humans, thinking him a vampire, drove a stake through his chest. It just missed his heart, but his wounds are mortal unless he gets help. Andor contemplates just letting himself die.

Lorraine had been camping nearby, and comes running to aid Andor armed only with a saucepot, which she uses to ferociously beat off his attackers. At her first words to Andor, he is flooded with emotions and he can see colors. He realizes that Lorraine is his lifemate, and that he must survive.

After centuries of being the warrior, Andor basically is helpless as he tries to recover from his wounds. Other Carpathian hunters arrive to help, and Lorraine is introduced to their world and to the real danger of vampires. Her courage and clear-thinking reactions are admirable. She is no delicate little flower. While overwhelmed by learning about Carpathians and the idea that she may be Andor’s lifemate, she is irresistibly drawn to him and works to save his life as vampires try to attack.

Feehan provides another suspenseful and action-packed tale of the Carpathian world. While her novels usually feature uber-alpha Carpathian males, Andor is a lot more approachable, probably because he is in such a weakened state for much of the book. But a lot of it has to do with the no-nonsense strength of Lorraine, who will not let herself be dictated to by any man, lifemate or not.

Feehan lays the groundwork for an epic battle with a master vampire who has been directing the fight against the Carpathians for centuries. She also teases a future book featuring the fearsomely alpha Ferro and his lifemate, which I am eagerly anticipating.

When modern meets ancient…

It is no secret that this series is one of my favourites. It is “lose yourself” in good writing, character building, and romance. It’s a world within a world that weaves paranormal into a reality that feels oh so real...

Lorraine has suffered through a horrible loss, one born of violence. One she finds hard to come to terms with. She’s lost so much that she has become lost herself. Looking for some form of Zen, instead she stumbles onto her worst nightmare. Surprisingly, it also becomes her salvation…

Andor is one of the Ancients. A Carpathian of legend, who has come to America to fight with his brothers against the increasingly cunning vampires and to prepare for the ultimate war to come. He knows it is coming. He can feel it….

I love when ‘traditional’ man/woman roles are reversed. While Andor is definitely an alpha male, Lorraine’s background has made her physically tough and smart in the ways of self-defense and, as it turns out, offense. She is smart and inventive, able to be bold when needed but also eager to learn from Andor and his experienced clan. The support and encouragement Andor gives her, means even men who were born in the dark ages (literally) can learn…. The relationship between the two is destined, and the way they fit together so well confirms it. The relationship between Lorraine and the other Ancients adds a new element to a story/series that continues to grow and expand…

If you have not read this series before you will find this read challenging to fit all the many pieces together. Luckily for you, that means you have a lot of amazing reading ahead of you!

Has this series gone on for too long? I thought starting with the North American contingent would bring some freshness to the long running series but it seems to be a lot more of the same in terms of plot and story. There are new characters being introduced all the time and some of them are quite interesting which is what keeps me coming back to read the next release in the series.

Andor Kantona is an ancient one from the monastery who has made his way to North America. Having given up all hope of a life mate he is determined to take as many vampires with him as he seeks the sun. Fortunately for him, a fury in the form of Lorraine aka his long awaited life mate bursts on the scene determined to help him fight. Apparently though he's so far gone that even his life mate might not be able to bring him back to life but for a ritual which she performs along with his other ancient brethren.
Now the Carpathians along with Lorraine make their way to Tariq's secure compound where Lorraine gets a chance to learn more about the Carpathian way and to make new friendships. There's some battles with the vampire and from a story arc perspective it becomes clear that Sergey Malinov is the more powerful vampire unlike his older brother as was originally suspected. Other than that there's the usual fare of battles, rituals to find and remove worms and soul splinters and identify life mates amongst the psychic women who shelter or befriend the folks in the compound.
I do have to give the author kudos that Andor for all his ancient ways has a good grasp of the modern and is open to equality with his life mate unlike his other Neanderthal like brethren. I am so looking forward to Gary's story though it doesn't seem like it's on the horizon yet since it seems that we will see more action in California for the near future. Please Ms. Feehan give us some interesting and new twists to keep the heart of this series beating.

Once again Christine does not disappo8nt, another winner in her Carpathian series. Still has a few more books to write as there are still characters we need to read about.

Following the events from Dark Legacy, Andor Katona has been fatally injured after being caught in a vampire’s trap and barely surviving. He is now alone and three human vampire hunters are about to stake him through the heart when all of a sudden a girl comes to his rescue and confronts the men with a saucepan. Lorraine Peters had been camping in the woods where Andor had been fighting vampires but due to his wounds he had been caught off guard while heeling. Lorraine can’t believe he can still be alive and why the men were trying to kill him.

In that moment, Andor realizes that Lorraine is his lifemate, a lifemate he had thought forever lost to him. Lorraine aids Andor as much as she can until the Carpathians Ferro, Gary, and Sandu arrive to heal and take him to safety. Meanwhile, psychic human men from the Morrison Center are being tricked into becoming vampire puppets and two find Lorraine during the day while the others are in the ground. They try to lure her away from the safety circle Andor made for her, unsuccessfully. When Andor and the others are finally able to move and leave, a master vampire attacks them with a new target in sight, Lorraine.

I can only describe Dark Sentinel as a book that will have you biting your nails and at the edge of your sit waiting to find out the outcome of the events that happen during the story. And then at the end it leaves you wanting more, especially with the new couple revealed! It is going to be interesting reading how their story develops.

I like that the female human lifemates are becoming stronger and independent in their own way. Some of the Carpathian men are right to notice that times are different and their lifemates can learn to defend themselves. During the story there’s a debate on whether the female lifemates should fight by the Carpathian’s side. Several men disagree because they don’t want to see the lifemates hurt, but Lorraine has a point that learning to defend themselves can be helpful and it doesn’t mean that all the women are going to go into battle. It is just a precaution in case of an invasion.

The North Americans and South American Carpathians are forming a big community outside of the Carpathian mountains and a reunion wouldn’t sound bad. I feel that Mary Anne de la Cruz would be a good help for the children found and the recently turned women. And! Some European Carpathians are on their way as well. I can’t help it but think of a second Dark Celebration in the works. But we would just have to wait and see.

If you’ve been a fan of the Dark series for the past 19 years, then you will love this book! Like I mentioned, it is going to leave you wanting more.

The newest book in the world of the Carpathian is a spectacular read full of electrifying suspense, volatile action and carnal passion. Andor and Lorraine are two solid, enthralling characters that easily draw you into their story but it’s their exciting relationship that keeps readers glued to the pages from the very beginning. The relationship is a bit rocky because of the situation and their differences which causes some emotional turmoil, but like all lifemate romances, the magnetic attraction sizzles from their core and refuses to be denied.

The story starts off with some intense, thrilling excitement and continues to keeps on the edge with lots of fast paced, explosive action and anticipation building thrills. This novel flows smoothly from page to the next while the hunters go up against vampires that have a diabolical plan and seem to have formed an army. Surprising twists and turns keeps the characters on their toes and defeating this enemy may just take more hunters than they have.

I was unable to put Andor and Lorraine’s story down until I had read every last word of this spectacular Carpathian story, the world just keeps getting more fascinating and the author continues to wow readers with her creative imagination and wonderful world building. I especially love the flying carousel that she brought to vivid life and how lifelike the characters and thrilling danger is while I suspended in her world.

Dark Sentinel is twenty-eighth in Christine Feehan’s Dark series. I enjoyed meeting Lorrain and Ando. Lorraine came out swinging literally. I love that she was determined to do the right thing even it was dangerous. And Ando fit her so well. Andor was struggling. He has lived with only his honor for so long he wasn’t sure he wanted to continue. But Lorraine changed that with one demand…but could she accept all he was? I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Lorraine fight for Andor. Ms. Feehan gave us such a strong female character with Lorraine. Even as she struggles with the loss of her family she refuses to give up or allow Andor to either. I love that Andor appreciated the woman Lorraine is. He saw her strength as well as her vulnerability and did what he could to support her. I loved seeing Lorraine fight for not only Andor but also for her new “brothers.” She may have been new to this world Andor opened to her, but she would add her flair to it. Ms. Feehan added new layers to this world she has created. I enjoyed seeing men of honor continue to fight even as they had little to no hope. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and can’t wait to see where Ms. Feehan will take us next.

With just a few spoken words from our story line heroine, Andor knew that the brave but stubborn female was his fated lifemate. What ensues is Lorraine’s effort to help heal the man with whom she is falling in love, as a powerful vampire resurfaces in an effort to find his own fated mate.

DARK SENTINEL follows the building relationship between ancient warrior Andor Katona, and Lorraine Peters. There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including the reappearance of infamous healer Gary Daratrazanoff, as well as a number of former Carpathian monastery warriors. Details continue to emerge regarding the Malinov brothers and their decision to turn vampire, including new information not previously revealed. The vampires have acquired the ability to formulate plans, something else that is slowly changing the series arc. The premise is entertaining and revealing but bogs down with too much repetition; the characters are bold and colorful; the romance is fated and spicy. DARK SENTINEL is an intriguing and detailed story , one that will be enjoyed by die-hard Feehan fans.

Christine Feehan continues her dark paranormal Carpathian saga with Dark Sentinel. Lorraine Peters, martial arts champion, is camping out when she comes to the rescue of Andor Kantona, an ancient Carpathian monk, under attack by vampires. Andor, who is very badly injured, has to be brought back from death by Christine who is his life mate and Andor's Carpathian companions. Why the vampires after Christine? Dark Sentinel continues the Carpathian series. Its like book 900 or something. Okay, thats an exaggeration, but seriously this is a LONG series. I haven't read them all. But, it wasn't a problem to read Dark Sentinel without knowing the details of the previous 9000 books.

Andor is a very old Carpathian who has all but given up on the hope he will find his lifemate. As he contemplates just letting himself die after being attacked by inept 'vampire hunters', his mate swoops in and saves him. While I noted it isn't necessary to read ALL the previous books, you really do need to at least understand the basics of the world Feehan has created.

-Vampires are BAD. Carpathians, while they drink blood and cannot come out during the day, are not vampires. A Carpathian who has given up hope and 'turned to the dark side' becomes a vampire and is then hunted by other Carpathians.
-Carpathian males must find their life mate. The longer they live without her, the worse their life gets and the more likely they are to turn into vampires.
-Human females who have certain psychic gifts can be mates to the Carpathian men.

Lorraine is a spunky girl with a deadly talent. She comes from a family of martial artists and she is exceptionally good. She saves Andor but is SURE he is gonna die soon. However, she agrees to his weird requests (packing his gaping wound with dirt, digging him a hole). She is telepathic and eventually shares memories with Andor to understand his world and what is happening. Because Andor is in such bad shape, other Carpathians are summoned to come help. The vampire attacks are getting more intense and frequent. The story has lots of action and quite a bit of gore. The human puppets...shudder. If blood, guts, and gore aren't okay for you, this book might be a bit much. Andor, compared to some of the other Carpathians, almost seems more beta than alpha. It was refreshing. He isn't a wimp or a pushover by any means, but he has a different way of behaving that is more contemplative and calm. I appreciated the break from the beat-you-over-the-head-and-drag-you-back-to-my-cave type behavior.

These are NOT books to read if you don't like the insta-love/fated mates thing. Me, I love it. But these two are in love within hours of meeting so if that isn't your jam, keep moving. If, like me, its you favorite thing ever, you will love this series. I like that the drama of the book isn't about the relationship but about external factors. I also appreciated that even with the life mates bond, Lorraine questioned the relationship. She had legitimate worries like does he like me, or does he HAVE to like me. Like all Feehan's books, there is some crazy hot sex as well. Like actually CRAZY! Some of the places Andor and Lorraine have sex is mind boggling (flying horse!).

The story ends a bit anticlimaticly in my opinion. The main story arc between Lorraine and Andor is settled, but Sergey is still out there, they still aren't sure what he is up to, and the next couple is hinted to and there are ALL KINDS of problems there. Now I have to wait a year for the next book!

Who should read this book? Anyone who likes progressive paranormal romance. Feehan has taken the vampire trope and twisted it. Her world of the Carpathians is evolving as time marches on and she does it flawlessly. If you like your romance steamy and just a touch violent, Dark Sentinel will be a gem! If you are my mom, you will hate this. Seriously, mom-not your kind of book. Vampires AND too much sex. Me, however, I loved Dark Sentinel!

The queen of paranormal is back with a new installment in the Dark series. The Carpathians are now in America are facing a new “super vampire foe”.

Andor, an ancient Carpathian, is severely injured during a fight with vampires when human vampire hunters come upon him and are about to take him out when Lorraine, in the woods to find peace, sees a man in need and quickly rushes in and saves Andor. To Andor’s shock, he’s found his life mate and she is a quirky human that just took on a bunch of men to protect him.

Andor is so severely injured that Lorraine must protect him until his fellow ancients can come to his rescue. Its great to see the human woman take the protection lead while the uber alpha is out of commission.

I really enjoyed spending more time in the Dark world. So, why only 4 stars? Dark Sentinel was slightly repetitive, less than other installments, but still enough to distract the storytelling flow. I’ve been a long time fan, reading all Feehan’s books and can’t wait to see what happens next in the Dark world.

I’m elated that Ms. Feehan finally gave me everything I asked for in a novel! I wanted a Carpathian ancient and a modern woman to figure out their love for each other without the woman making all the concessions. That was exactly what happened with Andor and Lorraine in Dark Sentinel.

Let me just say, I flipping loved Lorraine. She was fierce, compassionate, and occasionally hilarious. The perfect foil to Andor. In the first scene, she fights off bad guys with a saucepan while ranting about inner peace. I was absolutely cracking up. Andor is pretty darn great too. He’s super duper old but manages to control his impulse to order Lorraine around. He understands what she needs on a deep level; he’s very patient and kind with her learning process.

Dark Sentinel was all that I have come to expect and love in a Carpathian romance novel: crazy battle scenes, sweeping love, scorching sex scenes (hello sex while flying on a carousel horse like an X-Rate Mary Poppins)! I was absolutely satisfied with the love story.

My biggest snag with this book is that it was one big set up for what seems like the “next chapter” of Carpathian warriors, the ancients who lived in the monastery. As a building book, the story moved slowly at times. Lots of explanations, lots of discussions and lots of speculation about what the master vampire will do next. Any action that moved the plot forward was at a minimum, the majority of the plot (outside the romance) was setting the stage. As an invested and dedicated Dark Series reader, I didn’t always need the in-depth explanations, but it did help the book to stand alone. I wouldn’t hesitate to tell a Feehan newbie to start with this novel.

Of course, I am absolutely dying for the next book already! The bomb she dropped at the end of Dark Sentinel is so exciting for fans of the series and fans of the last few books especially. I know Ms. Feehan’s written north of seventy books, but I’m still always left wanting more.
