I loved this book for so many reasons! It grabbed me from the start and did not stop. The science and astronomy references were also something that I enjoyed because astronomy has always been something I had an interest in.
This story has just enough mystery, romance, family relationships, and love of space to make for one heck of a read!
This book was beautiful. I wish the ending had been different but that didn't take away from the beauty of this book at all.
It was well written which is huge for me, and you spend the novel going through the love story between Ben and Sarah and watching how it unraveled for them while wondering what has Ben done. I love a good mystery mixed with a love story!
Kudos to Dete Meserve for this standout novel!
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of this 4.5 star read. This was a great straight forward mystery, not one of those twisty psycho thrillers that are mass produced these days. It was refreshing to read a mystery about characters you cared about but still questioned. Engrossing. A fast read and I loved the astronomy aspects.
Amazing book! The story keeps you guessing. I had a hard time putting it down. I highly recommend this book.
The Space Between is the first book I've read by this author and it definitely won't be the last! When Sara Mayfield returns home from a business trip she finds that her husband is missing. What follows next is a well written story that will have you turning the pages. This is one of those rare books you won't be able to put down until you've read the last page. I highly recommend it!
I can’t not express how much I enjoyed this book. In all of your day to day relationships we find that they are centered around something specific. You may have one centered around books and another that’s centered around music. I love that the history of the stars and space and how it plays into the relationship of Susan and her husband Ben is an important element of this book. This book has truly made me a fan of Dete Meserve.
Loved this book! The twists and turns lead for a very quick read! I enjoyed how the author tied together the NASA scientific discovery with a husband in the food business. Two topics that I am greatly interested in! I would not have expected them to go together so nicely!
The Space Between was a good mystery/thriller, but not a great one. I did enjoy the story and the astronomy tidbits thrown in here and there were interesting and fit in well. The characters fell a little flat for me, however, and I had a hard time relating to Sarah for some reason. Overall it was a quick and enjoyable read though, so I would definitely give Dete Meserve another try.
A great story of suspense. Sarah Mayfield has just did the presentation of her life in DC. She returns to find her husband, Ben has disappeared. He had been in New York to buy a restaurant there. Sarah & Ben have had their lives going in different directions lately. Their son Zack has also been gone for a school trip. Sarah cannot believe the things she is hearing about her husband from others. Their home security tapes have been wiped clean. Can her friend Aaron help her find out what was happening while she was gone? This story has a lot about astronomy in it and as Sarah is trying to figure out what happened and where Ben is, she thinks about the love and good times in their fifteen year marriage. Lots going on but the story moves right along.
I enjoyed this novel - thanks to Netgalley for my free review copy.
3.75 stars
Another book, another story about a missing husband! However, I enjoyed it. The premise of the novel was interesting, I was curious to find out what happened to Ben! There are only so many scenarios in which a husband can disappear and either: come back/never return/turn up dead... but this one still felt fresh. Parts were predictable, but I'd say I was unsure of the outcome for most of the novel - I had my suspicions, yet I still found it enjoyable. There were a few little twists thrown in that I appreciated it, and overall I thought this one was a very quick read. The main character had just enough flaws to seem real, but still likable. I'd recommend to fans of domestic-drama.
While the plot description sounded good, I was never quite sure where the book was headed. I had a hard time getting into the book. It seemed slow to start but then in part 2, the story picked up and quickly came to a close without much excitement. I expected more action and suspense, with more of a “showdown” at the end.
Thank you to the Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I have never read any of Meserve's previous books, but I will not. I don't want to give away to many spoilers but the story's main character is Sarah Mayfield who is an astronomer. She returns home after a quick business trip to find her husband missing.
It's been a while since I've read a book with engaging characters who I became invested in. The pace of the book was fast and it was hard to put the book down. There is no MEGA surprise and to be honest, the book didn't need it.
One of the my favorite things about this book was that Sarah had a career and not just any career, she was an astronomer which was a nice change from the typical Fashion, Dr, etc that are usually given to women characters in books.
All in all a great read!
This is a book I could not put down! I'd been in kind of a reading slump and found the story refreshing and full of interesting characters and lots of movement. A great read!
Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review.
In this mystery/thriller, Sarah returns from a business trip to find her husband gone, the security camera footage erased and a gun in her nightstand drawer. Her teenage son said that the last thing his father told him was to keep the doors locked and set the alarm. As more details emerge, and Sarah has no idea if her husband is dead or alive, or guilty of a crime, Sarah recalls the good times in her marriage and becomes more and more determined that things are not what they seem.
A suspenseful page-turner! When Sarah, an astronomer, returns home from a work conference, her husband Ben is missing, and there is a mysterious one million dollars in a bank account, a loaded gun by the bed and the home security footage has been erased. She is initially a suspect until a murder occurs and more information comes to light; then suspicion shifts to her husband. The couple has drifted apart....what secrets is he hiding from her? I binge read this, as I wanted more with each turn of the page!
The Space Between by Dete Meserve promises twists and turns which immediately catches my eye when I see those mentioned in a review. The main character is an astronomer which is a career we don’t often see in thrillers. I am drawn to space and stars, I love the mysteries of what lies beyond what we can see.
Here’s the scoop:
The truth isn’t what it seems in this stirring novel of suspense.
After presenting a major scientific breakthrough to a rapt audience across the country, renowned astronomer Sarah Mayfield returns home to a disturbing discovery. Her husband, Ben, a Los Angeles restaurateur, has disappeared, leaving behind an unexplained bank deposit of a million dollars, a loaded Glock in the nightstand, and a video security system that’s been wiped clean. The only answers their son, Zack, can offer are the last words his father said to him: keep the doors locked and set the alarm.
Sarah’s marriage was more troubled than anyone suspected, but now she is afraid that her husband’s recent past could be darker than she dares to admit. Suspecting that nothing about Ben’s vanishing is what it seems, Sarah must delve into the space between old memories, newfound fears, and misleading clues to piece together the mystery of her husband’s disappearance—and find what she hopes in her heart is the truth.
This has all the ingredients needed for a great story and I look forward to starting (and finishing) it soon!
I was hooked from the first page. Sarah, an astronomer returns home to LA after being away on a NASA conference in DC. Her husband has disappeared. A million dollars has been put into her bank account, her husband, Ben, has recently taken out a 7 million dollar insurance policy. Needless to say, the police suspect foul play and they suspect Sarah. Soon it is discovered a potential business client of Ben’s has been murdered and Ben is the main suspect. The author effectively builds the suspense as the days go by and more and more evidence comes to light. It s a mystery, but also an opportunity for Sarah to realize how important her relationship is with Ben. After many rears of marriage, and high pressure careers, they had started to drift apart. Through the turmoil of his absence Sarah realizes how much she wants to find Ben alive.
The book is a real page turner. I would feel confident recommending to both men and women. No bad language, violence or sex.
Key characters: Sarah - a successful astronomer married 15 years to Ben. Ben - wealthy restaurant owner and family and heir to department wealth who has disappeared while Sarah was out of town. Zack - their 14 year old teenage son (who was so undeveloped he really became an optional character by the end).
A lot of science in this book - which can be good for some and not so good for others. I think what was tricky for me here was when an author makes her characters too affluent, the reader has a hard time identifying with them. Because, you know, our spouses can drop a million dollars in our bank account at anytime when things may go wrong.
Nevertheless, I did enjoy this because the science aspect was interesting to me. It was uniquely different in this way. I also liked how the author unfolds how two people, who have been together a long time, often find themselves emotionally adrift. Unfortunately the abrupt and unfulfilling ending made me take some stars away. It was very anticlimactic and the publisher (Lake Union - which is Amazon) should have pushed back harder on this to give the reader a little more.
The beginning of the book is a bit slow moving, but once the twists and turns kicked in, I was really happy I'd stuck it out. The main character is a little hard to like, but given that she's supposed to be socially awkward, I think that's almost intentional. I did guess somewhat early on who the killer was.
Dete Meserve knocks it out of the park with The Space Between. This is the perfect summer read if you want an engaging mystery thriller. Meserve’s main character astronomer Sarah arrives home from presenting her breakthrough findings at a conference. Her husband Ben, a wealthy restaurant owner is missing. What happened to Ben. I love how the author lets the reader exposes Sarah’s thoughts at every turn. Once the police and the F.B.I. Get involved, it looks like Ben has murdered someone and taken off. Twists and turns keep the reader involved. Thank you NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing. for the opportunity to read an advanced reader copy.
