I chose to get an ARC of this book FROM NetGalley because I'm a sucker for a Christmas romance. But this one was not a winner for me. For starters, the main character, Felicity (who wants to get engaged to her boyfriend of five years), starts asking for love advice from a handsome stranger. And then keeps going back and back and back to him for advice. It felt super awkward and like she was using him. Doesn't she have a girlfriend to call if she needs some help?? (Also, every time they're together, she asks the handsome stranger doctor to tell her a fairy tale. That also felt contrived and a little odd. "You're a stranger who's becoming a friend. I like your stories. While we sit here with drinks can I just close my eyes and you can tell me a fairy tale?" Huh??) And the situation with the boyfriend is super strange. And then the secondary character (Nell) is engaged and wants to get married but her parents refuse to be in the same room with each other. Even for her wedding! They both profess to love her, but they won't both be at her wedding.
All in all, Nell and Gabriel were really the only likeable characters. Felicity, the main character and Nell's parents are really selfish people who weren't terribly likeable.
Loved this book! Anita’s books always give me serious travel envy and this is no exception. Makes me want to plan a holiday trip to St. Moritz. I felt like Felicity and Nell were both very likable and relatable characters. It kept you wondering what would happen until the very end. The perfect holiday read this winter! Can’t wait for her next book! Thanks netgalley for this advanced read in exchange for a fair review.
This is my first read by Anita Hughes, and whilst I liked it, I didn't love it.
I could almost hear that Robin guy who was the voice-over man for "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" as I was reading. It was kind of hard to connect when every single person was uber-successful and beautiful - no plain Jane office workers in this one - but this could just be me.
I loved the setting of St Moritz, and snow at Christmas time is just something we see on TV in this part of the world.
My main issue was that for the most part, the characters felt very immature. The parents of one lady - omg what a pair or selfish, well, you don't want to know the words I have for them. I have seen 3 years olds behaving better than them!
I also felt that maybe there was too much trying to happen? Too many storylines fighting for space in the one book. Sometimes less is more, and to me, it would have been the case in this one.
I know this sounds like I didn't like this book, but I did. When I wasn't wanting to reach into the book and hit people with my reader. I just had my issues with it that probably won't bother anyone else.
This is a story about an up and coming bridal wear designer. She is extremely dedicated to her craft and the dresses sound lovely. I would love to actually see the fashion show that is presented in a fine hotel in St. Moritz. I enjoyed reading all of the descriptions of the dresses and the environment surrounding the hotel. The characters, however, were immature and whiny. I would love to visit St. Moritz during the holidays after reading this book. Meeting the people in the story n, not so much.
I am Charlie Brown and Anita Hughes is Lucy. Every time she grabs a new football (otherwise known as her latest release) I am all over it - hoping for an amazing book that I don't feel the need to hyper-critique. And every time, I land flat on my back with a laundry list of complaints..
Anita Hughes is a great author but I think she feels the need to fill the shoes of Danielle Steel with her grandiose novels of exceptionally talented and beautiful women who have the crappiest love lives out there and yet can find love again in some exotic and expensive locale. To quote Monty Python, "I'm not dead yet".
So here are my beefs with this one (in no particular order):
- Who lets the models ski/sled/toboggan run before a fashion show?
- How dumb are you to ski on an injured ankle?
- If you're so worried about being seen with someone, stop going in public with them
- What fashion model eats fondue? Or basically eats as much as Nell the week of an important fashion show? Or drinks all of that liquor?
- To Nell - screw your family if they can't get over themselves to put you above their feelings on what should be one of the most important and amazing days of your life. And wtf about Eliot's family?
- What fricking year was Patty born? By my calculations she seems to may be just a few years older than me but its like she was growing up in the 1940s and 1950s with her beef that she was not allowed to do the things she wanted or be a female at her father's studio. Did she never hear of Sherry Lansing who came to be the head of a major motion picture studio in 1980? Did she just miss the first feminist movement of the late '70s and '80s? What privlidged rock did she live under?
Yet with all of these beefs I still flock to a new Anita Hughes book like a moth to a bright shiny light because its still a cute fluffy read.
I can honestly say that I’ve never before read a romance novel where all of the sex scenes (involving the heroine) take place between her and a man other than the one that she Is with in the end. This was awful. Don’t waste your time.
It is not Christmas time unless you have read an Anita Hughes novel.. There is something about how this author writes that reads like a lifetime movie. I loved every second of this book and was sad to see it end.
Christmas at the Chalet is the story of a wedding dress designer & her quest for love. After her long time boyfriend fails to propose when she thought he was, Felicity was discouraged. Immediately after she tried to push & expressed her disappointment, he felt they needed time apart. On the heels of this, she had to pack & head to St. Moritz for the debut of her winter collection. How does she get her mind back on business? What about all the drama around her?
This was a good story and well written. I felt like the character development for Felicity was great but not for the others. I couldn’t develop a connection with the characters. The pace was a little on the slow side & the storylines changed quickly between Felicity & her drama & that of her model’s lives. This was a cute Christmas romance.
Christmas at the Chalet is a charming story in a winter wonderland setting. Felicity and her business partner Raj are in St. Moritz prepping for their big bridal show. The story includes fabulous fashion and love in the snow. Felicity's character is a bit wishy washy as she relies on a local handsome doctor for relationship advice. Nell, one of the models, is running herself ragged trying to keep her estranged parents from realizing they are both in the same locale. The ending is satisfactory as Nell reunites her parents and Felicity figures out her future.
Christmas at the Chalet by Anita Hughes is a fun read and would make a great Christmas gift.
The story begins seven days before Felicity Grants big bridal show in St. Moritz. This is her first overseas show. Tensions are high but all the models and gowns arrived safely and her business partner, Raj, had the schedules planned out. All is well until one of the models has altitude sickness and Felicity mist model one of the gowns. Next she slips and falls, practically into the arms of the local single, handsome doctor. Her boyfriend, Adam, in New York is less than thrilled when pictures of her in the doctor's arms hit social media. Can Raj save the show and can Felicity save her relationship with Adam or does she want to save it?
I enjoyed this book very much. The realistic characters solve the issues that come up in mostly ways that you might expect. There are several twists and turns and surprises throughout the story. I give it 5 of 5 stars.
I received an advance copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
"Christmas at the Chalet" by Anita Hughes
Wow, now I have all these views of St Moritz emblazoned in my memory! I almost wish I skied. AND, what a busy clean romance tale this is. I was invited by the publisher to accept an ARC of this story via NetGalley. Very glad I accepted this invite. Sometimes Christmas miracles really do come true, but not necessarily the way you expect. I truly enjoyed my time with Felicity and Nell and the telling of their stories.
Christmas at the Chalet by Anita Hughes is an interesting look at the fashion industry, a wedding be planned where the parents of the bride are divorced and have a troublesome relationship that the bride needs to come to terms with and a romantic relationship where the woman wants to get married and the man keeps putting her off swearing he loves her but keeps making excuses about getting engaged and setting a wedding date. The setting is St Moritz in the Swiss Alps and is beautifully described within the story. The fashion designer Felicity, who with her partner Raj, is doing a fashion show of her wedding gown designs the week between Christmas and New Years. One of the models Nell is engaged to be married in later in the new year has invited both her parents, divorced, to try and get them to agree to both be at her wedding because as it stands now if one is coming the other isn't. Things start going wrong right from the arrival of the designer, partner and models. Nothing seems to be going right. Not too bad, just not following the script. Felicity has a mishap that has a handsome doctor coming to her rescue. As they become friends, Felicity begins questioning her relationship with Adam, her boyfriend. Nell is being run ragged with trying to keep her parents from knowing the other one is there also. Also Nell finds out that her parents met in St Moritz and they fell in love. The storyline is quite interesting from getting ready and having the fashion show to finding out more about Adam and Felicity's relationship and about Nell's parents relationship and what caused them to divorce. The ending is quite satisfactory.
Ugh!! First off this is going to have major spoilers so I can explain why this book annoyed me so much. Felicity is a very wishy-washy person when it comes to her relationship. Felicity gets into a fight with her boyfriend of 6 years because he doesn't propose on Christmas like she thought he would. She leaves right away to go to Switzerland to do her Bridal Fashion show. While she is there she meets the handsome doctor Gabriel. During this whole book she keeps meeting up with Gabriel for relationship advise because he's a stranger. So instead of talking to her best friend, Nell or her roommate of as many years/best friend Raj she talks to Gabriel. It really is a very dumb premise. You already know that she is going to fall for Gabriel what annoyed me is that she was with Adam for 6 years, she talks about wanting to be with him forever and he comes to Switzerland and what does she do, leaves him to go to a museum with Gabriel because she needs advice. I just wanted to slap her over and over. If she so loves Adam as much as she says in this book, she wouldn't have left him in the room to meet another guy. By the end she realizes she doesn't really love Adam and is falling in love with Gabriel. I'm sorry but after not even 1 week she dumps her boyfriend of 6 years and falls in love with a doctor is less than a week. VERY Annoying and very dumb. In between this whole story is the story of Nell's parents and since my review is already so long I will make this short. Nell's parents were jerks through the whole book acting like children. It just irritated me more reading this book, by adding this into the book. I can tell the author needed to fill the book but this just add to the annoyance of the whole book. I was really hoping for a great read and instead I got a dud.
*I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.*
What I liked about this book is the way the author wrote about St. Moritz. She had me googling pictures and planning my vacation there.
Unfortunately what I did not like about the story is pretty much everything else. Immature characters with ridiculous problems they whined about relentlessly until I want to shake them, pointless flashbacks, some really bad love scenes and an ending for one of the characters that made me shake my head and wonder how I was supposed to believe it was a good idea considering everything she had said and done previously.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and honestly it was not for me.
I liked this book although I felt it was too cliched in places. The main character Felicity Grant is a wedding designer who is showing her gowns over New Year's in St. Moritz. She is determined to make her boyfriend propose to her, which got annoying to me after a while.
It was set in the Swiss Alps, and the setting was well described, and after she stopped obsessing over the boyfriend the book progressed along nicely.
It was a nice romance. Thanks to St. Martin's Griffin and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
What could be better than beautiful, snowy mountain scenery in Switzerland when you're in a gorgeous chalet at Christmastime? Felicity Grant is a top designer of bridal gowns and she gets the chance to attend a huge fashion show in San Moritz, Switzerland. Felicity has her own problems with her boyfriend but she has to continue her romantic "genius" to design a gown for a very important salon. Her top model, Nell, is planning a wedding of her own and is dealing with family issues that threaten the ceremony. The stars are shining brightly in this story with rich descriptions of the beautiful landscape and the love of the Christmas season in everyone's heart. A wonderful story that is truly a winner.
Christmas at the Chalet by Anita Hughes will be available October 16, 2018 from St. Martin's Press. An egalley of this book was made available by the publisher in exchange for a honest review.
* I am changing my rating from 3 stars to 4 stars because I am still thinking about this book a month later. I am someone who lives for summer but this book makes the idea of a ski lodge at Christmastime seem like a wonderful idea. Thanks for making the idea of winter more appealing for me.*
I got to read an early copy of this book through Netgalley, which meant that I read this wintertime book in the summer. I am someone who loves summer and hates when the weather turns cold. So, the fact that this book makes winter time sound so appealing is saying something.
Felicity is a wedding dress designer. She is in St Moritz for the fashion show release of her newest collection.
She gets into a big fight with her longtime boyfriend on Christmas Day. She thinks he is going to propose but was really far off base. After such years together, she is devastated.
She won’t let her personal drama mess up her big moment in her job. So, she tries to work her hardest and make the best of her trip.
She meets a handsome doctor and finds herself turning to him for advice.
The story alternates between Felicity’s story and Nell’s story. Nell is one of the models for Felicity’s show and she is dealing with her own drama: trying to get her parents to come to her wedding.
This author always mentions beautiful sites and delicious food in her books. But this might be the most beautiful details yet. You can picture yourself at a ski resort and you will dream about eating the foods she’s mentioned.
I had to look up several recipes and I’m definitely going to be trying some out...just try to resist the macaroni and cheese dish she mentions.
Since I read this early, I want to mention a couple small things that I hope can be fixed before the book publishes:
There is a scene we’re Felicity and the doctor have a meal at a restaurant. The story switched back and forth between saying he’s eating a hamburger and saying he’s having dessert.
Also, the tv show Sex and the City is mistakenly called Sex in the City.
Tiny little things but I figured if they can be fixed, then someone then want to know.
Another fun, book from this author. Beautiful setting, likable characters, strong self sufficient female character in the lead and the most delicious sounding foods.
Enjoyable to read in the summer and I’m sure it’ll be enjoyable to read in the winter.
This book was great! I loved the story behind Felicity's wedding dress business. I enjoyed the descriptions of the dresses, they were so good that I could almost see the dresses. St Moritz sounds like a lovely place and one that is even better during Christmas time. Nell certainly had a lot on her hands with her parents and ultimately it worked out. I enjoyed the book however i thought the middle was a bit long. Overall though it was a great story and I would recommend it to my friends.
Anita Hughes utilized an intriguing technique to tell her story of love and Christmas miracles. The characters divided time sharing their stories in the present and from the past and italicization helped keep the varying narratives visually straight. This was a heartwarming story of discovery, forgiveness, high fashion and lovely Swiss locales. If one skips over the unnecessary graphic sex I would highly recommend "Christmas at the Chalet'.
Christmas at the Chalet is a well written book. Good plot, well developed characters and a beautiful setting. I enjoyed the author’s writing and look forward to reading more of her books. I highly recommend this book. My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my ARC. This is my unbiased review.
