YOUR BRAIN ON PLANTS is a vibrant, comprehensive and beautiful reference guide for using 70+ medicinal plants to improve mind, mood and memory. Written by a mother-and-daughter team of PhD experts in neuroscience and herbal medicine, this book offers the results of scientific research, some they have pioneered themselves.

The guide covers Calming Balms, Cognition Boosters, Blues Busters, Sleep Promoters, Pain Relievers, Extra Energizers, Mind-Altering Plants, Plant Panaceas, and Resources. Each chapter includes details on related plants and herbs, scientific background, active ingredients, and safe-use directions. Also included are recipes for concocting teas, balms, food, cordials, and tinctures.

Included, as well, is the 411 on food that naturally addresses symptoms, plus practices that promote health: qi gong (in a wildflower meadow), meditating (on a chamomile lawn), and walking (in woodland). Highly recommended!

This stunningly beautiful illustrated guide gives detailed information on plants that can be used to optimize brain health. The fact that the book is a result of the expert collaboration of a mother-daughter duo, the former with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and the latter with a Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy (the study of medicine produced from plants), gives me confidence in the science of the remedies presented. The book is easy to use with eight general categories such as Calming Balms, Brain Boosters, Pain Relievers, Sleep Promoters, etc. Under each category, you can find not only in-depth information on the benefits, history and folklore, medicinal use, and safety precautions of each plant but also recipes and lifestyle tips. The degree to which each plant has been scientifically tested and validated is noted. I am reviewing an electronic advanced reading copy from NetGalley, but I am excited to get paper copy when it comes out in August 2018 because the illustrations are so gorgeous. It would almost be worth it to get the book without any content and just the pictures. There are photographs of plants and gardens but also watercolor or tissue paper technique artwork of plants. Highly recommend.

Ok, this book impressed me! I have read a lot of books on herbalism over the years and frequently get frustrated by incomplete information or information that seems to just be pulled from the writer's imagination, but this book gets things right! Including information from scientific research (including a ton of references), chemical components, warnings, and folklore...so something for everyone! I also like the inclusion of other health tips like Qigong, meditation, and massage along with various recipes, I could see myself recommending this book to people long interested in herbalism and those new to it.

I love that this was written by a mother daughter duo with PhDs in neuroscience and pharmacognosy. I love that the plants mentioned in the book have scientific studies behind them and I love that the authors include notes on safety concerns for each plant mentioned. I was pleasantly surprised to find recipes in the book as well. Your Brain on Plants is well researched, well written and well organized. It has inspired me to try to grow a few of the plants myself and bake up some of the recipes.

This book talked about 56 plants that affect your mind or emotions. The author covered 7 calming plants, 8 memory boosters, 8 plants that lift spirits and relieve mild depression, 7 plants that promote sleep, 7 plants that relieve pain, 7 plants that combat mental fatigue and restore vitality, 5 plants that alter your consciousness, and 5 plants that help in several ways at once. Many of these plants are easy to find, like sage, peppermint, cat mint, garlic, ginger, turmeric, green tea, blueberries, rosemary, and walnuts. Others were less common and may be more difficult to find, though I've seen many of them at my health food store.

For each plant, there's a picture of the plant plus general information about what it looks like and where it grows, historical uses and folklore, a summary of scientific studies, the bioactive ingredients, uses and how to take it, and safety warnings. There were also some recipes for foods, drinks, lotions, and such that used the herbs. While this is a very pretty and informative book, I'd hoped for more information about the scientific studies. These were summarized in a small paragraph or two while the history and folklore was usually two to three times as long.

This book, Your Brain on Plants, is extensively researched and well written. It deals with such topics as cognition boosters, alleviation of stress, mood swings and mild depression, easement of pain, mental fatigue and other benefits using plants. The authors give the following information regarding each plant/herb discussed: general information, history and folklore, what scientists say, key ingredients, how to take it, and safety issues. There are also some recipes included. It is written in a style that is easily understood with illustrations to match.
As a person living with a chronic illness, I am constantly researching for ways to improve my health; I have actually used some of these plants to help with my symptoms. They work! I am excited to try other medicinal plants and herbs written about in this book in order to maintain a better quality of life.
This book is a great resource and very highly recommended, especially for those looking for natural health benefits.
