Death Chase is a thriller/suspense novel from Lizella Prescott. Three friends, Mira, Isabelle and Kimmy come together to take part in a wilderness race a year after Mira's drug and alcohol addiction ripped their friendship apart. Mira hopes that this time together will help mend the bridges she burned. However, it becomes quickly clear that things are not what they seem and Mira begins to suspect someone is hunting them.
Death Chase is a fairly interesting and short thriller. It managed to keep me entertained but failed to make me care about the characters and storyline. The problem with this book is that everyone in it is toxic. They are all horrendous people doing horrendous things to each other. There is not one character who is likeable or relatable. They are all mean and damaged and bitter.
I do not need to 'like' characters in order to enjoy a book and the awfulness highlights the themes of toxic friendship really well, but in a genre like this where the stakes are high and not everyone is going to survive you need someone to root for. I rooted for none of them, they all could have died and I wouldn't have cared.
I also found the book predictable. It was clear what was happening fairly early on in both the present and the flashbacks. It was a train wreck you could see coming and a few twists wouldn't have gone a miss.
That being said Death Chase is a quick read that is enjoyable enough to make it worth a read if you are looking for something to fill a couple of hours.
I don't think this was a terrible book, but I had a hard time really getting into it. Just turned out to really not be might type of book I think.
** A somewhat captivating mystery surrounding three old friends and secrets from their past. There are a lot of flashbacks interwoven into the story and they may be distracting for some, but they are mostly necessary for the advancement of the story.
This was book was a very fast read. The story is under 175 pages so it was a one sitting read. The background of what took place over the past year in the lives of the three friends was as intriguing as the race in which they were literally running for their lives. Three friends who have been through a lot together in the last year are getting together for a 50K race in order to try to get back to where they were a year ago. But someone does not want that to happen. Someone feels the girls need to pay for what happened over that timeframe. Will they all survive the death race? What about collateral damage? Who does not want the three to be friends anymore or again? I am giving this story a 3.75-star review rounded to a 4-star. I really would have liked more. Short books sometimes leave me wanting more and this one surely did just that
I really loved this book because it has everything that I love. It's part thriller, part horror, and a story of friendship all wrapped up into one. This is one author that I am excited to read more so definitely pick this up because it's not to be missed and it's unputdownable. Once you start you will find it almost impossible to set down. Happy reading!
In Lizella Prescott's newest book "Death Chase", three woman who are deeply affected by one of their addictions set off to do a 50k wilderness race to bring them back together. After spending a lot of time in rehab, the point of view for the present time Mira hope's that she can make it up to her friends, Isabelle and Kimmy. After all, she hasn't even touched anything close to a drug in a year, even caffeine. But what they never expect is a killer in the woods.
The viewpoints change by chapter, alternating between the three girls, Mira in the present, and Kimmy and Isabelle in the past dealing with Mira. After finding out she's pregnant, Kimmy receives a bunch of disturbing texts from Mira saying she's overdosed on heroin. This pushes her into living at Isabelle's house, and then Kimmy's.
The story is very easy to fall into, and although it's a pretty short read, it packs a punch. Not only is the story mysterious, but it makes your heart race reading it, as if you're there with the characters. The characters and the world in are so realistic, it's easy to forget you're reading a fiction book, and not a true story. It's truly heart wrenching and gut twisting, and I won't forget it anytime soon. It's just one of those books I would love to have on my bookshelf, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a terrifying and realistic story.
Thanks for reading!

Mira, Isabelle, and Kimmy are college friends running a 50km wilderness race together when strange things, disturbing things start happening. Strange art, threatening messages, strange cookies and beer left on the route.
As we go, we learn that the three are trying to repair their friendship after something that had finally led to Mira going into rehab for a year. As they go along, and especially after finding a dead body, we find out through flashbacks just what happened that their friendship needed repairs. Mira is the focus of what happened, and as we go, we learn just how bad it was. It got to the point where I wondered why the other two would even bother.
I did see part of the end twist coming, although part of it still caught me off-guard. And as for the 'what happened after,' it was painful and oh so believable.
All in all, I found this book to be the perfect little thriller, with the tension ramping up to an explosive conclusion.
I read this is one day and couldn’t put it down. The suspense began building from the first page and the race was the perfect backdrop to the gruesome and frightening events leading to the climactic ending.
Step Nine: “Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.”
"Death Chase" is a tale of horror that doesn’t involve things like ghosts or demons but uses tension and suspense to keep a reader on the edge just waiting to see what will happen. Although relatively predictable, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Prescott does a fine job of offering detailed imagery and descriptions without obscuring the characters and plot.
Death Chase is hard for me to review. I really like the idea of this book, but the execution left a lot to be desired for me.
Mira did some horrible things to her best friends, Kimmy & Isabelle, while she was struggling with various addictions. After going to rehab and getting their forgiveness, the trio vow to mend their fragile friendships by participating in a 50k race through the wilderness together. During the race, however, strange things start happening and people start dying. Will they survive the race with the friendship intact? Such a great premise!
The main problems that I had with this were that the things Mira did to her friends were too unforgivable. She was too unlikable a character for the reader to root for any redemption. Rather than just one transgression per friend, she committed several major acts of atrocity. It felt completely unbelievable that she would be forgiven or that we should be expected to be sympathetic towards her in any way.
The story alternates between the present, during the race, and the past, which explains what Mira did to her friends. The present chapters are all told from Mira's POV and the past chapters switch between Kimmy & Isabelle. I rather liked that we got the chapters from different perspectives and got to see what led up to Mira's stint in rehab. However, learning everything as we did, I felt that the Mira chapters were hard to read because I just flat out didn't care about her character. And the more I learned about her past, the less sympathy I had for her and I found I stopped caring what happened to her altogether.
The ending felt a little too abrupt to me as well. I saw it coming, and I think a lot of other readers will as well. I think another few chapters leading up to the conclusion, perhaps exploring more of the thought process that led up to it, would have been nice.
All of that being said, I want to stress again that I did really think the plot here was interesting. I think that this would be an excellent horror movie, but I think as a book it struggled a bit to accomplish everything that it wanted to.

Mira, Isabelle and Kimmy enter a race and death gives chase!
Very well written but the past-present style threw me a bit but the story is worth overlooking that. These three ladies say they will "always be friends"; a race with death will test that. Enjoy!
