Nicely paced thriller that is a bit trope-y but which has good characters. Thanks to Netgalley for the aRC.
Unfortunately this book was not for me, it was a bit slower than I would like and it just didn't hold my attention. I am sure other people will love it!
Great thriller, could no put it down through all the twists and turns. Would highly recommend to fans of this genre.
The idea behind the book is not bad. Yet the plot gets totally overplayed in the last chapters. Also I am not a fan of random psychopathy in the characters that one closely knows for years - this is a kind of modern "deus et machina" plot for me and it lessen the catchability in the mysteries in my opinion.
This story had me gripped from the beginning and I couldn't wait to finish it. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.
This story definitely kept my interest and I had to find out who was framing the main character. I found some of the twists to be a bit predictable, and was skeptical about others.
The writing in this one needs some help. I nearly couldn't get past the simple, choppy quality of the sentences. But I did. For me, the story in this one was merely okay. I would have liked a bit less predictability and a bit more suspense.
When forensics specialist Liam is called out to a crime scene he discovers the victim is his ex-lover. Unfortunately, he has no memory of where he was at the time of her brutal murder. Liam's brother, Sean, is a homicide detective and tries to help but all evidence points to Liam. As Liam digs deeper for the truth he starts to suspect that it might actually be Sean. Will they get to the truth and will it tear the family apart?
I really enjoyed this book, it's well written and has a good pace to it which really builds towards the end. It kept me hooked and I was desperate to get to the truth. I did guess who had done it and was suspicious of another character but this didn’t detract from the tension at all and I was hooked until the end.
We occasionally get to go back to the boys past which adds the question of whether you can inherit a gene to make you do bad things. It also explains why the boys are so close and added to the story without over complicating it.
I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more of Matthew Farrell's work.
Thanks to NetGalley & the publisher for a copy of the book
great first book! Kept me on the edge of my seat and cheering for the wrong brother until the end. Very good.
"Family is not always what it seems."
Liam Dwyer is a forensics specialist and his older brother, Sean, a homicide detective on the same Philadelphia police force. When Liam arrives at the scene of a murder in a dingy motel, he discovers, to his horror, that the victim is a woman for whom he cared deeply and with whom he had an extramarital affair. Her mutilated body has been staged in a deliberate manner. Liam is terrified by the fact that he has absolutely no memory of where he was or what he did on the night of the murder. He woke up in his bathtub -- a place he would ordinarily never be because of the childhood trauma he suffered that left him terrified of both water and bathtubs.
As always, Liam looks to Sean for support and answers. Sean assures Liam that they will find the killer, despite the fact that the indisputable evidence they uncover, including DNA and fingerprints, incriminates only one person: Liam.
Liam is desperate to learn the truth, even if it means finding out that he is capable of committing such a heinous crime. But deep down, he knows that he is not. He is convinced that someone is framing him. But why?
When additional killings and Liam's investigation point toward another suspect, he refuses to believe it. Would his own brother set him up to be convicted of murders he did not commit? And is Sean actually a monster, capable of such unspeakable violence?
What Have You Done is a promising, if uneven, debut novel from Matthew Farrell. The story starts strong, but quickly becomes bogged down in stilted, unnatural dialogue and implausible plot points (including incorrect depictions of police procedures). However, Farrell pulls the book out of its slump to deliver a second half that is fast-paced and exciting. As the authorities search for Liam, who is frantically trying to gather the evidence of his innocence, and Sean gradually unravels, Farrell capably takes readers on Liam's pulse-pounding and heartbreaking journey to the truth. The result is a thriller that is, overall, enjoyable, and inspires readers to ponder their own familial relationships.
Excellent thriller! Two brothers you will love, although you are afraid their past will ruin the future. I couldn't put this down, loved the mystery of it, and the characters. Can't wait to read something else by this author.
Well written but not really a deep thought provoking read. I enjoy the mystery/thriller genre and this book did not disappoint. The twists and turns are predictable and I knew who had committed the crime within a chapter or two, but not the total ending to the book. I was really happy that the author keep the story interesting and moving, without resorting to the use of the f-bomb or any profanity. I recommend this book for an easy uncomplicated read.
Fast thriller with just the right number of characters and moving parts to hold my interest and keep me glued to the pages. I guessed the solution half-way through but that didn’t ruin my enjoyment in the least as I continued to read and see if I had guessed correctly. That comes pretty close to perfection in a crime thriller because guessing is part of the fun. Two police-brothers share a horrid childhood past that doesn’t seem to have left them without psychological scars. The question posed by this tale is whether those childhood traumas are being relived in some fashion, by the brothers or someone very close to them. This is the first book for the author and a good one at that. I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
"When a mutilated body is found hanging in a seedy motel in Philadelphia, forensics specialist Liam Dwyer assumes the crime scene will be business as usual. Instead, the victim turns out to be a woman he’d had an affair with before breaking it off to save his marriage. But there’s a bigger problem: Liam has no memory of where he was or what he did on the night of the murder."
This was a clever, well written story about two brothers. While I did enjoy the characters and the concept of the story, I did find it a little predictable. The story line reminded me of a CSI episode, which I liked. Great first novel by Matthew Farrell.

I’ve seen mixed reviews about this book but I absolutely loved it!
I found the story to be fast-paced and gripping and enjoyed it from page 1. Unlike other reviewers I didn’t fully guess who the perpetrator was, although I had my suspicions! I enjoyed following the story and watching the many dark secrets unravelling.
The story flicks back every now and then to Liam and Sean’s past which gives a good insight into what they’ve been through, how their relationship has developed and how they have come to be as close as they are.
I really liked Liam and was routing for him throughout the book….despite what he might have done. I also found some of the other characters really likeable; others less so! I thoroughly enjoyed going on the rollercoaster ride of a story with them!
Parts of the story you can guess what is going to happen next but this just added to the excitement as most of the time I was hoping I was wrong! There are some excellent twists in this story, especially once you start getting towards the end of the book. The very end had me particularly shocked! Even though I’ve now read it and know what happens, I will happily reread this again in the future.
I really did enjoyed this and would thoroughly recommend to anyone!
What Have You Done by author Matthew Farrell is an intense, gripping and many twist crime thriller! It pulls you into the whodunnit and makes you think. You’ll never guess who though! The characters were there and solid as well as the plot, overall it is a GREAT a thriller that has JUST released so watch for it!
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an arc copy of What Have You Done in exchange for an honest review.
An edgy crime thriller reminiscent of a CSI episode, What Have You Done is an explosive debut by Matthew Farrell. The novel is a cross between a domestic suspense and a hard-bitten crime story, opening with a mutilated body investigated by forensics specialist Liam Dwyer. But soon Liam realizes he knows the victim. And he has no memory of the night she was murdered.
As he’s always done in times of trial, Liam turns to his big brother Sean, a brash, bold, charismatic homicide detective. But as evidence stacks up against him, Liam begins to suspect Sean is somehow involved.
Exploring themes of family, trust and identity, this is a great plot-driven novel you’ll easily plough through and enjoy.
