In this really cute story, a chicken is showing the reader her family photo album that PROVES she's a dinosaur! (Just look at her feet!) Dinosaurs covered include velociraptors, iguanodons, diplodocuses, tyrannosauruses, stegosauruses, triceratops, with a little big about each kind of dinosaur as well as how they went extinct... almost. This book is so fun, and it managed to tell an entertaining story while still (rather sneakily) teaching young readers just a bit about dinosaurs.

We love dinosaurs in our house and this book was an adorable intro into some of the most popular dinosaurs as well as helping to emphasize the relationship between dinosaurs and modern birds.
Nice illustrations. Engaging and Interesting facts. Will appeal to adults and children. However, the book contains historical inaccuracies, narrow views, and a consensus of thought that has been disproven by other camps of scientists.
This is adorable. It's set up as the chicken's family scrap/picture book. It is a blend of fiction with the family scrap book with actual information at the bottom.
A chicken gives the reader a history lesson. The focus is about why a chicken should be in a dinosaur exhibit. And she does a pretty convincing job at it. A great story for library collections.
We are very big fans of dinosaurs in our schooling and our home, so when I saw this book (especially the cover) I knew that it would be a welcomed addition to our reading. And, of course, I was right.
What I think children love most is the fun little facts about dinosaurs, especially the case that the chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus) is making about the link between dinosaurs and chickens. The setup of the family album/scrapbook kept the young eyes busy on each page beyond just the written words. I think this book would make for a great introduction to dinosaurs for younger children - though children like my son who are very knowledgeable on the topic will still find this very entertaining.
My children are crazy about dinosaurs, so when I saw this title (and the awesome cover illustration), I had to have a look.
"The Truth About Dinosaurs" is a kids book that explains the connection between dinosaurs and birds (specifically, in this case, a chicken). It delivers interesting information about different kinds of dinosaurs, as well as how they came to be extinct...except for those who would eventually become modern day birds. However, it reads like a children's fiction book, has wonderful illustrations, and is both cute and charming (particularly the scrapbook concept for looking at the chicken's "family history"). Altogether, very well done, a great introduction to dinosaurs for little ones.
I am an elementary school art teacher and I read to my students all the time. The pictures in this book are awesome! They are so colorful and fun. This is a great book filled with dinosaur facts with some funnies tossed in for good measure. Kids love non-fiction books and this is a pretty great example that the dinosaur lover in your life will love.
My daughter and I enjoyed that the narrator was a chicken. It was a cute way to talk about dinosaurs. The illustrations were adorable. We enjoyed the presentation of the photo album. However, as far as books about dinosaurs go, this does not get put in our top 10.
Ein Huhn, das den Beweis antritt, es sei ein Dinosaurier - kein Witz, sondern eine gelungene und sehr witzige kleine Geschichte mit hübschen Zeichnungen.
Guido van Genechten got my attention at the chicken. For the chicken on the cover is not there by coincidence, she is the heroine of the book. And I'm afraid I have made the mistake that the author himself is also guilty of: I have offended the heroine. She shouldn't be called a chicken, that's ill-mannered. She is a Gallus gallus domesticus. (And now we are all acquainted with the proper Latin name for a chicken.)
This book is a must read for any dinosaur-obsessed child. The chicken is hilarious and the illustrations are well done, and there's also some factual information to be found on the pages.
At one or two parts, the text is a little bit patronising and I'm no fan of that, even in a children's book but that's only my personal pet peeve that should be ignored by the greater public. On the whole, I really enjoyed this The Truth About Dinosaurs.

The book contains general scientific information about the dinosaurs and colorful illustrations. The book can be used with children from 5-8 years old.
The truth is: there is a lot of fun to be had with this new addition to our Guido van Genechten collection: a smart and intriguing approach to the world of dinoaurs that every 3-year-old will find absolutely endearing. I am thankful again to netgalley.com and Clavis Publishing for letting me have an ARC of The Truth About Dinosaurs written and illustrated by van Genechten.
Presumably six books about dinosaurs are already part of our home library, but this new van Genechten creation will weasel its way onto our bookshelves as well, as soon as it is available in print. Frankly speaking, I am tactile, so needless to say that brilliant books always make it into our home in print. I can’t help it. We are all so in love with van Genechtens illustration art. The dinosaurs in this book (especially Stegi!) are part of a huge list of adorable and endearing characters that he has created throughout the years, and I am forever grateful for stumbling across his fantastic books to brighten my children’s reading experience, to spark their imagination and to tap into their own creativity.
This marvelous dinosaur book (ISBN 978-1-60537-423-9) will be published on 1 August 2018. Van Genechten offers an easily accessible, enjoyable and educational photo album for all little dinosaur fans out there. If you know a toddler who loves these creatures, then this will no doubt make an impressive gift.
The Truth About Dinosaurs was originally published as Het ongelooflijke maar waargebeurde verhaal over de dino’s by Clavis Uitgeverij, and I am sure that you’ll love this funny, intelligent and appealing children’s book just as much as I did!
Who doesn’t love dinosaurs? But Genechten gives a wonderful twist to their story through the family album of a chicken! Cute pictures! Loved the chicken feet!
This is a cute book, narrated by a chicken who insists that it is a dinosaur. Most of the book is looking at the chicken's "family album," with the chicken narrating along the way. A very basic, fun introduction to 6 different kinds of dinosaurs and 2 theories about their extinction. Young children will LOVE this, and will probably laugh their way through it again and again.
The Truth About Dinosaurs by Guido Van Genechten
Cute book about how chickens are related to dinosaurs. Read it to my 4 year old who giggled a few times (dinosaur farts and kissing dinosaurs!) I seemed to like it more than she did, so it might be a better choice for slightly older children (6+). If you know a child who is really into dinosaurs this would certainly make a great gift.
Thanks to Netgalley for the early ARC!

Pretty funny story I would have loved to have had when my daughter was small She would have loved it! I love the chicken showing how it was related to dinosaurs- feet, feathers... The illustrations were humorous, not scary at all and would be perfect for small dino lovers to look at! I would recommend this as a gift to any child who loves dinosaurs! Well-written story! Guido Van Genechten does awesome work! Genius!
An exciting tale explaining how chickens are distant relatives to the dinosaurs who walked the earth millions of years ago. Chicken shows us an heirloom "family photo album" with dinosaur names and illustrations noting some of their amazing physical characteristics (like the Tyrannosaurus having teeth each as large as a banana). Chicken offers two theories on why dinosaurs disappeared and then ends the tale waiting on a Dino egg to hatch, sure to make children giggle.
An entertaining story and a nice introduction to dinosaurs, this story will excite and educate young readers.

Did you ever seriously think about the connection between a huge dinosaur and a humble chicken? I bet you don't have the slightest idea, and I haven't either before reading this book! Aimed mostly for curious children that love dinosaurs but also recommended for some parents never old enough to learn something about nature, science and the dinosaurs too, this is a funny approach to evolution. The illustration is also funny and matches the tone and style of the text.
The Truth About Dinosaurs was just ok for me. I liked the concept -- a chicken shows how she is related to dinosaurs by sharing her family scrapbook -- and I really liked the illustrations.
I wished, though, that there were a few more facts and that maybe the scrapbook had been arranged in chronological order. I know a couple of kids who would gravitate to this book because it's about dinosaurs, but then be disappointed that there just isn't a whole lot of factual information for them to gobble up.
I'll certainly be looking for more by Guido Van Genechten in the future, I think it's just this particular story that didn't do it for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for providing me with a free electronic ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
