Series: Eva Driscoll - Bo0k 1
Genre: Thrillers/Mysteries/Government conspiracy theories
I had a hard time getting into this one. 30 chapters in and the author was still adding characters. After awhile I didn’t even try to prioritize their importance to the story and focused on just 4 of the main characters. I hate when that happens.
This read more like an action movie. We actually don’t learn a lot about protagonist Eva Driscoll, who is out to find out why her brother was murdered and made to look like an accident. She’s been in the business long enough to know things aren’t always what they seem. Apparently she is a rogue assassin with a tough exterior, a female superhero skill-set, and an agenda.
Never having read this author before I didn’t know what to expect. I love thrillers, but somehow this came across as contrived and unrealistic in parts. This plot line might be a good screenplay but not for serious thriller readers. The characters weren’t developed well enough for this reader to care what the final outcome was. The ending was anticlimactic, and though the author sets this up for continuation in a second book, I most likely will pass. Thanking NetGalley for the opportunity to provide an honest review.
Just finished the first book in the Eve Driscoll series and am looking forward to reading more of this series. However, I felt that this book was talking about current/possible situations in our future. The storyline was really scary to read because it hit close to home. Reading sentences like "... had the population of the United States exactly where he wanted it. Decades of dumbing down the educations system had produced a couple of generations largely incapable of free thought. They believed what they were told because that's all they knew growing up. Listen, repeat, accept as true. Even the three most popular social media sites were pawns ... They recognized the potential at an early stage and had invested heavily in making them yet another tool in the misinformation game." It was like Alan McDermott was talking about potential/actual happenings in our world today.
With that being said, this book was a page turner. It was non-stop adventure and hopefully on some level will alert the reader to keeping abreast with what is going on in the world today. Once you start reading you won't be able to stop. It's like being on a roller coaster. You can't get off until you finish the ride!
Thanks to Net Galley for an advanced copy in return for an honest review.
Heroine's tend to turn me off. Not because there are none but they are written as just as powerful as men and its just not true. With that said I almost skipped "Run and Hide" but I really enjoyed it.\
The story is basically Eva and Rees as they outwit/fight/maneuver Mr. H. Langston. I enjoyed the paring but I got into the cons[piracy angle a lot more and was a little disappointed with the "in book #2 ending". Other than that spot the rest you will enjoy.
This is not really my genre, but I will admit that it is a fun and interesting departure. As far as I'm concerned, all the characters are believable, if not all of the action. Just a few instances, near the end, are reminiscent of a popular action-movie series, and a very good one at that.
Eva Driscoll, the female lead and leader of the pack of CIA/MI5 operatives, is clever and capable. The male characters perfectly fit their roles, as does Henry Langton, the very credible villain. Eva and her crew are out to claim the lives of those who took her brother's life. The story is enriched by the military vs rich-men-in-power chase. At odd intervals during the fast-paced reading of Run and Hide, it's difficult to tell whether one is reading a book, watching a movie, or tuned in to the latest news!
There is a modicum of strong language and at least one pretty graphic, squeamish scene; however, it fits the plot and works with the circumstances at the moment.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher. I really enjoyed the book.
This suspense and action-packed thriller rockets along at top speed and is the perfect summer read. I really enjoyed the lead character, Eva Driscoll, and the secondary characters were great supporting elements. The author evokes the various sections of the country as if he had lived there. The ending was a surprise! My only complaint is it the story ended too soon and left me hanging. Hopefully there will be more from Driscoll by Alan McDermott. Thanks to #netgalley for the advance read of #runandhide
I have read several of Alan McDermott's books and this one is one of his best in my opinion. I read the book from start to finish in one sitting which is quite unusual for me. The storyline is strong, the characters very believable, and the plot quite plausible. Having enjoyed this book so much, I am now going to revisit all the other title's I haven't read and start on those as well. Thoroughly recommended for a nice easy read that will keep you turning the pages until the end.
Again, thanks to Netgalley for the copy. What a well written thriller I hardly could put aside. An unexpected end with the right twist to wish for the story to continue. I only can reccomend it to read
It's no secret that I am a major fan of this author since he self published his first book, Gray Justice, in 2011 and was overjoyed when he was picked up by a publisher. I have loved every one of Tom Gray's subsequent adventures, along with the author's other book Trojan. So, I was over the moon when I heard he had started a new series. But... Would I like it? How would it compare to Tom? So, it was with a fair bit of trepidation that I started this, the first in the Eva Driscoll series. Obviously, you'll have already guessed from my 5 star rating that I. Loved. This. Book! Yes, Tom has a wee cameo in it and Sonny and Len do star a bit so I wasn't completely in uncharted waters for my entire journey, giving the book a familiar feel character-wise. But it was the tight plotting, the attention to detail and research that really sets this author out from the crowd. I don't know where he gets his ideas from but they all contain current themes, skilfully interwoven around fiction. Fiction that is so credible that these books mostly scare the pants off me as there is nothing included that couldn't happen (or possible already does happen) in real life.
Having Sonny and Len in this book did help the balance of characters as Eva herself is a bit enigmatic. We get to know a bit about her past but the rest of what we read about her is action all the way. Given who she is and what she has done and is indeed going to do in this book, it's hardly surprising that you don't really get to go under her skin in this, her first outing. But, that said, I connected to her right from the off, and was well able to take her at face value, so none of that really mattered to me in this book. As the plot develops, you really get to understand why she is so closed. Spoilers obviously prevent me illustrating this here though.
Obviously, knowing this author and the way he sucks me into his books, I planned my reading accordingly, on a day where I could read start to finish with out interruptions. That turned out to be a great plan as it soon became obvious that I really wouldn't have liked to have put it down for anything longer than comfort breaks, coffee replenishment and a quick snack!
The action takes place mostly in the USA. I've never been to New York but I have heard from others that it is realistic so I'll have to take that on face value. But again, knowing this author and his attention to detail, I am happy to accept this as truth. I also loved the political aspects of this book, scarily believable like all his books, maybe too much so. I wonder if he has to watch his six when he is out and about these days?
There are a lot of supporting cast to be found but that didn't faze me as they were all quite distinct and we got to know them well enough throughout the book as the plot developed. It probably helped that quite a few were already known to me from the author's previous books, whether that would be a hindrance to others, I can't say. I'm also not always the biggest fan of characters crossing series, especially for continuity (they do this more and more on TV with CSI and NCIS and the like these days and it irks me if I'm not in the same place with the crossover program) but again, as I am all caught up with the Tom Gray series and have read Trojan, I'm OK with it here.
It really is action packed all the way, although it has to be mentioned that the action complements rather than overshadows the plot, and then, at the end, when the dust is beginning to settle, the author throws a bone in. Not a cliffhanger by the way, this is a complete story in itself. It's more of a teaser, setting things up for what I hope will be an equally brilliant second outing for Eva. One which I am really hanging to read.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Superb thriller.
I hadn't read anything by the author before but I was looking forward to it as the reviews were good.
Drew me in from page one and found myself itching to getting back to it every time I had to put it down.
Excellent construction with very likable characters (Oh boy, how much would I love to have Eve's capabilities!) and a plot that never loses pace.
Already looking for more titles by this author.
A weekend well spent on this one. Many thanks.
The perfect blend of suspense, thriller, conspiracy mystery, and set up to a new franchise! I loved every moment of this book. The characters were unique, the plot compelling, and the stakes high. Eva is certainly not one to be messed with! I shot through the book in about two days - I couldn't put it down! Highly recommended to fans of Lee Child or James Patterson.
I enjoyed this fast paced action packed thriller and the heroine Eva Driscoll. It held my interest from page one and I am looking forward to reading the second Eva Driscoll book.
Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy and chance to review this book. Eva Driscoll has worked as a CIA operative in covert operations. When her brother dies and it is listed as suicide she sees many things that indicate that it was staged to look that way. She then takes on the job of determining what really happened and has to determine who she can trust or not.
I enjoyed this book. It was a new and fresh story line. It seems like this is the first book in a new series and am looking forward to the next book.
We are following the story of CIA trained Eva Driscoll, who is avenging her brother's murder, with the help of the only member of her brother's Special Forces squad hasn't been murdered yet. Eva needs to find out why her brother and his squad have been targeted and she is determined to kill the people behind this conspiracy, before those people kill her.
I can have trouble keeping up with the action when there is a lot of fast paced shooting, but throughout all the action scenes, they were so well written that I could visualize them as they happened. There is a second book that will continue Eva's search for the people behind this conspiracy and I'll be sure to read that book when it is published.
I do think Eva seemed too "perfect" despite her flaws. She is this superwoman who can outwit the best, despite being in situations that appear to be overwhelming. I set that aside and just went with the flow of the book, accepting that Eva is so good at what she does that there is no way I can understand just how everything can come together so well. I'm pretty sure Eva would make a great female James Bond.
Thank you to Alan McDermott. Amazon Publishing UK, Thomas & Mercer, and NetGalley, for this ARC.
One tough female who is equal to any bodyguard.High interest, full of action, and surprising character choices. Love reading a thriller where the heroine saves the day!
Interesting story and good characters. It took a few chapters to keep all the characters straight, but it was worth it. The plot twists were great -- right to the end.
I would like to thank Amazon Publishing UK, Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Run And Hide’ by Alan McDermott in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
The Executive Security Office controls security in the US and Eva Driscoll who’s worked for the CIA believes they were responsible for the faked suicide of her brother Jeff and his friend Danny. Eva watches as Rees Colback is chased through Manhattan by men in a black SUV and as Rees worked for Special Forces in Afghanistan with Jeff and Danny there’s a good chance those chasing him are also responsible for the death of her brother. She rescues Rees and together they attempt to work out why the ESO has marked them for elimination. Can they discover the truth before they’re caught?
‘Run And Hide’ comes across as an exciting and fast-paced thriller with a well-executed plot and twists and turns. A big disappointment however are the characters who I didn’t find believable and although I kept going in the hope I was eventually going to enjoy it, I struggled to get to the end and called it a day half-way through. I’m sure a lot of readers will love this type of thriller but I’m afraid I’m not one of them.
I am not big on government based books but I really enjoyed this book and had to finish to see happened to Eva and her crew, definitely would have been 5 star review if not for killing a bunch of kids. Not necessary.
Meet Eva Driscoll, Woman On A Mission
Eva is hunting a man on a busy New York street, and it seems she has marked him for death. But soon you learn that all is not what is seems. Rees Colback is the target, having left the army for a job opportunity in New York City. Soon his Special Forces sixth sense kicks in and he realizes he is being stalked.
Thus begins Run and Hide, a book you will be immersed in as you learn how the evil plot unfolds. It is a wild ride, with unbelievable turns that slowly reveal the unimaginable truth and clever moves that it takes to reach the inevitable confrontation of good and evil. Captivating from the very first chapter, Alan McDermott has created another thriller that draws you into the plot quickly and never lets you go.
Thank you, NetGalley, for a free advance copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
"Run and Hide" presents a troop of characters who quickly get to grips with providing solutions to any conceivable problem. The unrelenting scheming keeps pace with the rate Eva Driscoll dispatches these problems, which is carried out with stealth and efficiency.
Eva is just one of the many pawns in this mammoth game of political chess - but now she has a personal quest: to obtain answers and ultimately justice for her murdered brother. People will be held accountable – whoever they are, whatever their position, and at any cost. Even those pulling the strings at the highest level who ironically display the lowest regard for everyone else.
The hazards are plentiful, the feats impressive, the group dynamic... maybe not so much. Although Eva’s unfaltering and effective kick-ass attitude met every challenge head on, the crowd of people that builds around her immediate circle and beyond grows considerably preventing me from getting to know anyone else in any great detail, and consequently believing in them.
Probably best to just sit back and enjoy the ride with this one. But expect a steadily rising body count and no mercy.
*** ACTUAL RATING: 3.5 / 5 ***
I love this book, characters were well developed. The plot had many twist and turns. Great read., cannot wait for the next book..
