Given my students love of all things weird, I thought this one would be great. And it would, for older readers. Unfortunately, I don't think it really fits my elementary school students.

I received this e-galley from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. This could be a fun introduction to the Arthur legend for young readers. The adventure story is reminiscent of the adventure style in series like Percy Jackson. The combining of modern-day video gaming and an ancient legend is clever. I would recommend this book to middle grade readers who enjoy adventure and mythology books.

This is basically what happens in ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ. A teenage Arthur is sent to the 21st century, where he finds out that he became king, married his best friend Guinevere, lost her to his "best friend" Lancelot, and was eventually killed. That's harsh. Understandably, Arthur decides he likes the 21st century and he's going to stay there, playing football and enjoying middle school.โฃ

It's up to gamer girl, Sophie, and her best friend, Stu, to set things right.โฃ

Seriously, this book was so much fun! I already love anything to do with Merlin or King Arthur, but seeing him as a kid and all the adventures that they went through ... definitely epic. With 346 pages, this isn't a book I would normally read in one day ... and yet, I did ๐Ÿ˜Žโฃ

I know middle-grade books get a rep for being easy reads. While this one definitely went quickly, there was plenty to keep me occupied. I wanted ... needed ... to see Arthur succeed. I wanted to see everything work out for Stu and Sophie. And Guin ... hopefully she learns from the history lessons she got from "the Google".โฃ

This was a great read. Fast paced and engaging. The characters are relatable, fun, and people that youโ€™d like to meet. I loved the mixing of legend with present day. I also loved how things changed when you removed the legendary characters from their story. I keep wondering what King Arthur has to do with pepperoni pizza. I hope I find out in book 2! Keep the story going.

A computer game pulls Sophie and her best friend Stu back to the time of King Arthur โ€” while King Arthur ends up the cool kid in Sophieโ€™s high school in this middle grades fantasy. While Arthurโ€™s working on scoring the winning touchdown, Sophie and Stu are trying to get history back on track with a little help from Merlin: pulling the sword out of the stone, winning the jousting competition, and preparing for the war that will make King Arthur a hero. This is a fun, upbeat take on the King Arthur story, though there are places where the writing and plotting feel a little forced.

The Once and Future Geek is a fun, fast frolic through time and space as the young protagonists try to keep historyโ€™s course steady. While the target audience is middle grade, and the writing and plot make that clear, even as an adult I enjoyed the story

An interesting mix of 21st century and medieval as two modern-day teens find themselves dealing with Arthur and Guinevere in modern times and the chaos that's created when their medieval friends resist returning to their time. Morgana gets involved and everything goes really sidewise. Though entertaining, the book suffers from a white default and a tendency to fall into gendered tropes. There are books out there that better reflect the world of the present than this one does.

This was a very fun adaptation of the story of King Arthur. The book alternates between Camelot and the modern era and young King Arthur and a group of 21st century kids have to restore his story. I really enjoyed this book, it was full of adventure and the characters were a lot of fun.

Sophie and Stu are 21st century kids, who also happen to be online gamers playing a game about Camelot. In Camelot, Arthur accidentally loses something magical and very important to his future goals as King and he loses it in a well that time travels it away to the 21st century. Sophie has to go back and forth between the realms to held find the item AND then convince Arthur of his fate.

I liked the story so much, it was a very cool concept to have this mix between old and new and adapt the story of King Arthur for this age group. There was so much going in in the adventure and with the various points of view that the reader is kept very involved from all angles and is really immersed the whole time.

This is a series too, so there is more fun to come and I think these are going to be great for learning about King Arthur and his trials but also as great adventure books, comparable to the Percy Jackson series.

I requested this for my children to read and they love it. I also read and love it. I am planning on picking up the book for the kids so they can enjoy it again.

I'm a sucker for time travel books and those that involve Arthurian legend, so this one was right up my alley. It did not disappoint. I think middle grade readers will enjoy this one immensely, especially with the gaming element thrown into the mix.

This was a great revival of King Arthur and Camelot for young readers. With time travel and modern technology thrown in, this adventure story will hook young readers. This book makes Camelot more accessible to young readers while also providing an alternate history to show the power King Arthur had and what might have happened had he not ruled. Loved the twists and turns the characters had to take to save the world. Fun adventure story for middle grade readers

I was skeptical when I first looked at this book as to how this plot could work for a story. It does. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the two crossing timelines in modern times and back in the time of Camelot and Merlin. I loved how changes in the past affected the present. What do you mean no pepperoni pizza??! Merlin has been interacting with some kids in the present via a video game called the Camelot Code and when something happens in the past, Merlin enlists Sophie's help through the video game. Things go awry and time starts to unravel. Will the kids be able to fix things before the present they know no longer exists?

The cover of this book makes it seem much younger than it actually is which is unfortunate... I loved this book - the adventure, friendship, time travel, history...
The story begins in the present with best friends Sophie and Stu playing their Camelot Code video game with an online friend. They are about to defeat Morgana. But their friendship is a bit strained lately...
Meanwhile, in Camelot Arthur and his best friend Guin dream of a future where they could change the world if they weren't bound by class and rules. But when Guin accidentally loses a scabbard down a well, Arthur goes after it not realizing that the well is a portal which takes him to the present.
And so, the lives of the 4 intersect. Arthur, who learns of his fate on Google, doesn't want to go back and Stu takes his place temporarily. But things start going wrong - can the 4 of them make things right?
Lots of fun...

I absolutelyย lovedย this book! It had me hooked from the very beginning and I honestly couldn't put it down. There were so many little references that were included that sometimes made me laugh out loud; they were definitely a great touch! There were pieces (especially the football scenes) that reminded me of the movie (I know there's also a book, but I haven't gotten to it yet. *hides* I was addicted to the movie when I was younger though!) Avalon High, and I loved it!

I absolutely loved all of the characters; Mari Mancusi definitely made characters that are relatable and entertaining, from Merlin to Morgana! If you've ever read The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan (and if you haven'tย go read them), you'll know who Sadie Kane is and Sophie reminded me of Sadie so much! I'm always a huge fan of sass and sarcasm and there was so much of it within this book. Besides, a girl who puts her foot down at the possible destruction of her favorite pizza is the most relatable thing I've ever seen, haha! All of the characters really were amazing though; Stu, Arthur, Guin, Lucas. They all had qualities that made them great, but they also still possessed flaws which are so important when dealing with fictional characters.ย

I cannot wait to read the next installment of this series and I'm so grateful that I got to read this one early! I highly recommend this book to any and all fantasy/myth-loving nerds!

I was unable to review this book in a timely manner before its release date; however, this seems like the type of title that my current students will enjoy and I hope to purchase a copy for my classroom library.

This was so fun!! Combines gaming and contemporary relationship ups and downs with time travel, magic and sword fights. The plot is intricate and fun, and the characters are strong. This sets up the series while wrapping up the story in this book in a satisfying way. I can't wait to tell kids about this one and to read book 2!

The Once and Future Geek is a fun, fast frolic through time and space as the young protagonists try to keep history's course steady. While the target audience is middle grade, and the writing and plot make that clear, even as an adult I enjoyed the story - especially since I've been a gamer (in another time, when I *had* many free hours in a day) and so many of the phrases and occurences in the story had me laughing and nodding because yes, that is indeed what happens when you play an MMO.ย

โ€œIโ€™d rather my heart be broken a thousand times than spend one day without her,โ€ Arthur declared valiantly. Merlin groaned. โ€œI seriously donโ€™t know why I bother,โ€ he muttered under his breath.

This is NOT your high fantasy King Arthur story. Don't go looking for that, and you'll probably be just as happy with it as I was. I love the banter between the various characters. I did think it was a little odd that the kids were just totally okay with Merlin lying to them at the very beginning...has no one ever told them creepy old men stalk kids online?!? But anyway...the story itself was entertaining, if a bit lacking on historical detail and high in artistic license. I sort of got a Percy Jackson meets Ready Player One vibe.ย All the family relationships and time switcheroos got a little confusing part way through the book, but then I got so interested in what was going on with Sophie's parents that I didn't care.ย

4/5 stars, due to some odd wordiness and events that I felt were a little too eye-rolling worthy even for the target audience. Also at the end the author clearly sounded like an adult trying to speak to children, or trying to sound LIKE a child, which irritates me to no end and I'm sure would be off-putting for a kid.ย Otherwise a really solid read and one I would love to add to my shelf! A refreshingly positive, upbeat take on the King Arthur legends.ย

I loved Sophie and Stu - their friendship, their geekiness, and their acceptance of each other and other people. Sophie's attitude was awesome, and given that ending I really hope the series gets continued now that this reprint is out!ย ย

She was going to knock some sense into this little once and future twerpโ€™s head if it was the last thing she did.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a free digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Books like this that mix historical figures in to new fiction always entertain me. I like the twist on well known characters and it is a fun way to introduce younger children to people in history also. With the combination of time travel and history and video games there is something to appeal to many readers. There is sword fighting and teen drama, magic and a sibling rivalry. It was fun and kept me engaged.

E ARC from Netgalley

Guinevere and Arthur get along quite well, practicing their fighting and trying to stay out of the way of the knights who terrorize the peasants they are trying to help. They are young, and Arthur's position is precarious, but they care for each other deeply. In modern times, Sophie and Stu hang out together and are big fans of a video game where they must defeat the evil Morgana. However, Stu's step brother Lucas has gotten Stu to try out for the soccer team, and Sophie feels him slipping away from her. When Guinevere and Arthur accidentally lose a very important sword from Merlin's collection right before a big tournament, Merlin has to use his powers to get the weapon back, and this includes sending Sophie a computer code that makes her travel back in time! When Arthur gets pulled to the present, and Stu goes back to impersonate Arthur and pulls the sword from the stone while under a glamor to look like him, things get oddly complicated. Add to this the trouble the kids have with their romances (Arthur Googles himself in the present day and finds out about Guinevere's relationship with Lancelot, which doesn't make him happy!), and the precarious situation that time travel and changing the course of history puts them in, and this is a harrowing twist on the Arthurian cycle.
Strengths: Camelot and Arthurian legend is always popular, and this is an interesting cyber twist, sort of like VandeVelde's 2002 Heir Apparent series. Since that is falling to bits, I should get this as a replacement and weed that. Fiction involving video/computer games can date fairly quickly. Fun story, and my hard core fantasy fans will love it.
Weaknesses: The love interests, combined with the time travel, made this a little confusing and slow in the middle for me, but I think my students won't feel that way.
What I really think: I like this author's Gamer Girl (which I've had for almost ten years!), and she clearly has some gaming chops. I'd love to see her write a book about students and video games only in the modern world. I'll buy this one, but it will circulate primarily to students who love Arthurian legends and fantasy.
