Another thrilling book from this author with characters old and new.
The story moved quickly with lots of twists and a puzzling ending?
Bring on the next one.
This is my first read of the Catherine Ling novels and I have to smack myself for not reading the past in this series. I know a bit about her from the Eve Duncan novels but that was just a slight glimpse of what and who she is about. I loved (just about) every minute of this novel! The action, the suspense, the twists, reveals and even the sexual chemistry will leave you begging for more! One little issue I had with this novel was the stubbornness of Rachel. I know she sees it as being a help and refuses to leave a man down and all but it got to be a bit annoying in the beginning for me. Her not realizing or just not caring that she is not only putting her life but the lives of another's in danger in order to keep a promise to one person was offsetting for me. Besides that bit, a great read!
I am a big fan of Iris Johansen’s Eve Duncan series and her Catherine LIng series . This was another heart stopping fast action thriller . I love the action in these series and each book is one you find you cannot put down.
Catherine is a CIA agent and a friend of Rachel Venable, the target of mastermind terrorists leader Max Huber. Huber is the head of the Red Star terrorist cell and has planned a big explosion in San Francisco. Rachel and Catherine, along with Rachel’s bodyguard Jude Brandon, are together going to work to try to stop Huber from carrying out his terrorist plot .
The action is fast-paced and non-stop with a subterfuge secrets mixed in. There are several surprises in the plot that kept me guessing. Rachael is a strong character who is determined and fearless as she try's to avenge her father. She and Catherine make a great team in this book with Jude. This was a exciting well crafted thriller that I highly recommend.
Thank you for the ARC that does not affect my review . I look forward to the author's next book.
This thriller is the fifth in the Catherine Lang series, a series I’ve never read before (so a disclaimer for the rest of my review). I found the premise of the story strange — abuse and torture leading to a relationship with a mystical shaman, complicated father relationship that predictably leads to trust issues and the Guardian (who has psychic tendencies). The first quart of the book was slow, but the story began to unfold and the disparate plot lines began to complement one another. It’s a fun afternoon (or more) read that yields a predictable ending.
Intrigue, romance, suspense, Vendetta by Iris Johansen includes them all. Though her fifth book in the Catherine Ling series, Vendetta stands well on its own as Johansen provides those new to this series with enough background information so they don't flounder.
Though full of sexual tension and suspenseful, I found the book to be somewhat long. The cliched uber-male characters were pleasantly met with smart and strong (and sensual!) female leads. Much was made of this, which, while not distracting from the crises at hand, did become a bit comical in a stereotypical way. I think the author was torn between writing a bodice-ripper and a suspense book so she just combined the two!
An entertaining read!
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for allowing me to read an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Vendetta is the fifth in the Catherine Ling series but the first that I have read and I had no problem reading it as a standalone. I have read and enjoyed books by Iris Johansen in the past and I am glad that I requested this one. This is a fast paced thriller that grabs from the first page to the end. Dr. Rachel Venable is a physician who has a calling to treat patients around the world. Her estranged father, Carl, is CIA and when he is dying, he sends his co-worker Jude Brandon to look for Rachel in Guyana because he knows that she will be tracked down by a terrorist Max Huber. Rachel and Carl were responsible for his father's death. Brandon's job is to get Rachel and keep her safe. This starts an adventure of not only keeping Rachel safe but also trying to find the terrorist, Max Huber, and stopping his plans to do damage in San Francisco and get revenge on Rachel.
This is a suspense filled adventure with a great cast of characters and an intense plot with bombs, kidnapping, poisons and cyber investigations with a little twist at the end that has me looking forward to the next book. There is a great group of side characters that enhance the story. I plan to go back and read more of the series.
I received a complimentary ARC of the book from St. Martin's Press through NetGalley. Thoughts and opinions stated are mine only.
Iris Johansen has done it once again with her new release of Vendetta, the fifth book in the Catherine Ling series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone, and it is easy to follow the story whether you are new to the series, or already a fan. However, I would recommend reading the previous books in the series in order to get further insight into the reoccurring characters.
Typically when writing a review, I give a lengthy description. In this case, I was worried about revealing too much, and decided to take a different approach. After all, the description of the book perfectly describes what Vendetta is about. I am a huge fan of this series, and of Iris Johansen novels in general. This is a series that will not disappoint. Strong lead female characters are always showcased in each story. Catherine Ling has been a favorite character of mine throughout the series, and she is the perfect one to protect Rachel. In addition to the main characters, Iris Johansen"s secondary characters are always well-written and complex, and perfectly compliment the lead characters.
Vendetta is a fast paced thriller, full of action, adrenaline and unexpected twists and turns to the story. This is definitely a page-turner...one that will have you questioning both the good and bad guys in the story...leading up to an ending that leave you patiently waiting for the next book in the series. Overall, I recommend reading Vendetta, as well as the previous books in the series.
I would like to thank St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read and review Vendetta. My views are my own, and are in no way influenced by anyone else.
I have read most of of the early works of Iris Johansen so I was familiar with the basic back story for this novel. Instead of summarizing the plot, I will admit that this novel takes the reader on a wild ride. There is a lot of intrigue and a bit of romance. Many characters from past novels are front and center. My gripe is that I really don't feel as if this novel brought anything new to the table. It feels very formula like and predictable. I would like to read something by Johansen that takes these characters in a new direction or throws the reader a real curve ball.
Admittedly I am a huge IJ fan, but this series and the characters just keeps getting better and better. The females are always so different, but strong and amazing in their own ways. Each story showcases their own strengths, but occasionally, as in this story, we get to see several strong women come together and support each other while shining their own light. Catherine Ling has been a favorite of mine since we first met her. It was great to see her in the role of friend and protector to Rachel, as well as seeing another female character come into her own and show strength and vulnerability. Another aspect of this story and IJ's writing that I admire and enjoy is how even the secondary characters are strong, fully developed. I say this because many times her secondary characters grab my attention as much as the primary character or couple and I find myself rooting for them on their own! Hu Change is fascinating and I look forward to seeing him in more books! I would love to see him, Joe, Cameron, Adam Lynch and Seth Caleb all come together. I have no doubt all the women would work together and highlight each other's talents, but I do wonder about the men as they all have such unique strengths and alpha tendencies.
The action in Vendetta is top of the line and will keep you invested to see how the action takes place and what or when agenda's can be changed. The multiple characters and details keep one engaged and actively reading because I was trying to figure out who Nemesis was and who all was on which side this time around. I did question a certain event based off of personal preference that someone not be done or gone from the series, and the ending, while not a cliffhanger, has me ready for the next book with Rachel and Brandon to see what happens! Loved the writing and dynamic between the different friends/couples. I finished this book a few days ago and keep thinking about some of the newer characters, actions and wondering how certain events will play out in books to come! If you enjoy strong female characters, charismatic individuals, action adventure, suspense and intrigue I recommend this book and the rest of the Iris Johansen stories revolving around Eve, Kendra, Catherine and more!
Thank you NetGalley, Iris Johansen, and St. Martin's Press for the chance to read this story and share my opinions!
Iris Johansen has written a exciting on the edge of your seat thriller. I could not put this book down. Vendetta is a roller coaster ride of thrills and intrigue. Aust read for all!
A suspenseful, fast-paced, action-packed thriller…
This is the fifth book in the Catherine Ling series that can be read as a stand-alone.
Not many have the wherewithal let alone the fortitude to exact vicious retribution against those who have crossed them or those they care about. When it becomes an obsession then it is a vendetta. For the villain in this story, it is his reality, nothing will prevent him from exacting the vengeance he seeks, plans that have been years in the making are close to culmination and many will die, including the daughter of the man who murdered his father.
To find oneself the object of such a deadly obsession will test the fiber of one’s very being. Sometimes you have to make a choice to take action that goes against your core principles. That time has come for Rachel Venable, a doctor who swore an oath to help not injure, daughter of a man who headed a CIA terrorism task force. Her father’s past actions, taken to save lives, placed her in a dangerous situation and not for the first time. She survived brutal treatment once but can she survive again is in serious question considering the odds that are faced. This time she’s not alone, Jude Brandon and his military-trained team stand with her, sent by her father just before his death, and Brandon has reasons of his own to use Rachel to obtain his objectives.
Though this book is in the Catherine Ling series, Catherine is more of a supporting character than the principle. She’s a CIA operative and a close friend to Rachel, both were mentored by the mysterious Hu Chang. Catherine is determined to protect her friend as much as she can but who will protect her from Richard Cameron whose interest has been captured by the transpiring global events.
This book is aptly titled for vendetta is the theme woven throughout and for more than one character. This was a suspenseful, fast-paced, action-packed thriller with intelligent, strong, yet flawed characters; the plot had numerous intricately woven moving parts that constantly engaged the reader’s attention. There was much drama, personal choices needing to be made, and collateral damage from unexpected consequences. Romance brewed for more than one couple amid deadly secrets, conspiracies, betrayals, government agencies, and a global terrorist organization. This reader loved the ending possibility that perhaps should not have been surprising considering who it pertained to. The romance aspects were a bit overpowered by the astounding storyline but there was no denying the magnetic attraction that existed between each couple.

4.5 stars
A master terrorist wants to change the landscape of the California coast as a tribute to his dead father. Carl Venable of the CIA died trying to prevent this tragedy. Get ready for a spine tingling ride as his daughter Rachael picks up the reins and forges full speed ahead to complete her father's mission.
Rachel is a healer, a student to the legendary Hu Chang. She is an expert apothecary learning how to use and blend natural ingredients to save lives as well as take them when necessary. The same Rachael who once stepped away from her father because he used one of her potions to take an evil life now steps forward to do what must be done to eradicate evil from the world.
Along with her friend the legendary CIA agent Catherine Ling and her friend Jude Brandon, Rachael picks up her father's baton to take an active role in searching for Nemesis the informant who lured her father to his death and the principals of the Red Star terrorist organization. Lets not forget the mysterious Richard Cameron who makes his own cameo appearance in this book to help on the side of good. I just couldn't put the book down once the chase is begun and the dots start to connect. Be prepared for some really big surprises along the way especially the end.
The bomb explosion at the luxury island off the coast of San Francisco, the radical jihadi, the oil tanker captain with the apparently pristine record, were all great side trips on the way to the main event that helped to ratchet the tension and suspense. All in all another winner for Ms. Johansen.
3.5 STARS
Johansen always seems to meet my expectations. This is an action packed, fast paced addition to the series. I missed one or two book of this series, but had no issues understanding all the characters and events. There is always an excellent refresher of past events. (Catherine has appeared in Eve Duncan Series too).
The main aspect that kept this from being a four star read was the lack of emotion and somewhat dull romantic chemistry between Brandon and Rachel. I adored Brandon but Rachel was too robotic. Despite her background, her plight just didn't affect me like I had anticipated. Despite her aloofness, I enjoyed the storylines. Johansen does a wonderful job of balancing realistic criminal justice procedures and keeping readers entertained; everything is believable but thrilling.
Overall, this is a solid addition to the series, and I can't wait for the installment. I definitely recommend this author/world to romantic suspense fans.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for my advanced view copy!
My first read from this author in a long time and it was most enjoyable to realize that romantic suspense and drama is still her forte. Action packed and intriguing with all of the secrets and hidden lies that supplement the "truth" of the reality. Rachel is a strong willed individual who knows that her stubbornness is not necessarily an attractive trait, but that her determination to survive supersedes all other emotions. Her relationship with Brandon is complex and convoluted while still maintaining a distance that grows smaller with each passing moment.
Iris Johansen delivers yet another twisted tale of danger. While I'm not too keen with the ending, I have faith that certain things will be resolved in future books, as was the case in this one. This book centers around Jude Brandon trying to keep Rachel safe from a terrorist, after being asked as her father's dying wish. A definite non-stop action story, with twists that will keep you guessing (and yelling at the author).
I thank Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of Vendetta.
I am going to go ahead and post my review to Netgalley now, but refrain from posting to Goodreads or any other site with hopes my review turns to a more positive light. I have been reading Vendetta for almost a month now. It is taking forever. I am not sure if it is the lackluster characters, or the lack of my favorite characters showing up, but I am not liking it very much. Catherine Ling and Hu-Chang make very slight appearances, but not enough to call it their books. This is Rachel Venable's book, the daughter of CIA's Carl Venable. While she has an interesting backstory and talent, the story just drags for me. I am about halfway through, and I have read two other books in the meantime. Johansen's two other releases this year have been great. I will finish it because I don't give up, and I love Johansen. Here is to hoping the second half gets better, and the next book is better and brings back Eve.
Although I am a big fan of Iris Johansen’s Eve Duncan series, this is the first book that features Catherine LIng that I have read. That being said, it will certainly not be my last since I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced romantic suspense. Catherine is a CIA agent and a friend of Rachel Venable, the target of mastermind terrorists leader Max Huber. Huber is the head of a cell called the Red Star and has planned a big explosion in San Francisco. Rachel and Catherine, along with Rachel’s bodyguard Jude Brandon, are tasked with stopping Huber from carrying out his terrorist plot and also keeping Rachel from falling into his hands. The action is fast-paced and non-stop with a lot of lies and secrets mixed in. There are several surprises in the plot along the way, so the readers will not be disappointed. My favorite character was Rachel. Although she was stubborn and determined to put herself into harm’s way in order to avenge her father, she was also a strong lead in the quest to stop Huber. Her romance with Brandon seemed to be emphasized a little too much for me because it distracted from all of the action with Huber,. Readers of romantic suspense will definitely want to read this latest book by Johansen with her trademark explosive finale and twisted villains.
Even though this is marketed as a Catherine Ling book, Catherine isn't our main character. We are introduced to a new character with ties to someone familiar, Carl Venable's daughter Rachel. The book starts very abruptly with an action scene where we first meet our other main character, Jude Brandon* and experience the death of a well-known side character in Catherine & Eve Duncan's series - Carl Venable. The book starts off strong with action and kind of tapers in the middle where they try to figure out what our villain, Max Huber, is up to in California. Climax of the story happens very close to the end of the story and resolves itself pretty easily.
Not the best book in the series but gives us a look at some fresh characters.
Iris Johansen has done it again. Another suspense filled read with a great cast of characters. As this is the fifth book in the Catherine Ling series, Ms Johansen uses characters from prior books and adds a few new characters that add spice to the adventure. There is enough background information on the characters that a reader did not have to read any prior books. As is her style, Ms. Johansen artfully ties together the varying storylines.
I thoroughly enjoyed this books with its energy, electricity between characters and twists. I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to #Netgalley and #StMartinsPress for approving my request. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Vendetta starts with a cheesy deathbed scene that sets up Jude Brandon’s mission: rescue Rachel Venable, the daughter of a soon-to-be-dead CIA bigwig, before she falls into the clutches of Max Huber’s Red Star terrorist organization. Rachel is a selfless and heroic physician who volunteers to save lives in underdeveloped countries. She is currently in Guyana doing just that, combining western medicine with the miraculous herbal cures she learned from Hu Chang. The versatile Hu Chang also taught Rachel how to be a guerilla warrior. He apparently didn’t teach her to keep her libido in check, because no matter how dangerous the situation, all she can think about is getting between the sheets with hunky Brandon.
To maximize the reader’s devotion to Rachel, Iris Johansen has her risking her life to administer the final dose of her miracle cure to a little girl. So that’s two cheesy scenes just in the first twenty pages. Descriptions of lean and firm men like Brandon are the stuff of cheesy romance novels. I thought Vendetta was a thriller, but it was my mistake not to realize that Iris Johansen writes trashy romance novels. which is exactly what Vendetta turns out to be.
Vendetta is written in an overwrought style that often borders on hysteria. Dialog seems to have been drawn from B-movies. Brandon, Rachel, and Hu Chang come across as clichés rather than living people. Rachel’s depiction as a strong woman who frustrates men with her “unassailable depths” only contributes to the stereotype that defines the protagonist. Clearly the wrong novel for me, but fans of trashy romance novels might like it.
