There is nothing better than to visit old friends and make new ones. That is how I feel when I read a Hannah Howell novel. While introducing new characters, she also undated us on some of the characters from previous books. The Murrays are one of my favorite fictional families, throw in the Camerons, and McFingals and my favorites are well represented. I love the way this author introduces and blends in new families and characters into the storyline....possibly reserved for future books? As with her previous offerings, this book is fast paced, full of danger, and nasty villains. The villain in this storyline is particularly foul since he is related to the heroine, Mora Ogilvy. Running from certain death at her cousin's hands, she attempts to steal Gybbon Murray's horse. That is the beginning of their story, but by no means is it the end. Ms. Howell is one of my must read authors, fortunately she is quite prolific, so I am kept quite content reading.
Hannah Howell's highland series of historical romance will scratch your itch for big brawny men in kilts. Highlanders who know how to love a lady with respect and heated passion while cherishing her in a way that bring a chuckly to your lips.
The latest romance in the series features Sir Gybbon Murray of the famous Murray clan featured in mainly of the books. A young lady running from a black hearted cousin tries to still his horse, Jester. Gybbon dusts the lady off and hears her story. He agrees to aid her in seeking help and comes to respect and love her.
Fans of romance books will love this series.
Highland Devil by Hannah Howell is book 22 in the Murray Family Series. This is the story of Sir Gybbon Murray and Mora Ogilvy. I have read the previous books, but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Mora is running from her cousin Robert who had decided that he wants what is rightfully hers and her brother Andrew. Mora has sent her brother off to safety and but she is running from Robert. Robert killed her parents and is out to do that also to them but has since framed her for their death. Mora meets Gybbon while on the run and ends up hurt which then leads her to his family. Thinking to stay long enough to heal she will then move on....but Gybbon wants to help her and his growing feelings.
Enjoyed their story!
I have read all the books in the Murray series and enjoyed each and every one of them. But unfortunately this one I struggled with. I felt this book was more about Mora and her evil cousin then it was about any kind of romance. In fact right up to the very last chapter you weren't sure Mora and Gybbon were going to be together. It wasn't until her brothers found them in bed together that Gybbon agreed to marry Mora. I just didn't find this book up to Hannah Howell's usual standards of excellence.
I do so love to enter into this authors novels seeing what kind of treat I am in for. The characters with their delightful names capture you right away and a chuckle also escapes. Her predicament though is no laughing matter with Mora being fortunate that she has Gybbon's ear. The exhilarating way things are handled with also the emotions being pulled you too will feel the fight. Family wanting blood even putting this with the excitement and drama of this one. It also pulled on me to see how to squeeze in the ones from this series that I have not done.

I love the Murray family and mostly anything written in the Scotish theme, very enjoyable read.Looking foward to the next book.Well written and paced, with good character chemistry and development.
Mora Ogilvy's cousin Robert has decided that he wants the manor house and lands his grandfather gave to Mora's parents and he is systematically eliminating anyone who stands between him and his goal. He kills her parents and sets his sites on Mora and her young brother Andrew and even his own brothers cannot stop him.
Mora sends her brother off to their Aunt Maggie and runs to her mother's cousin, Sir Sigimor Cameron for help. Failing to kill Mora and Andrew, Robert tells the sheriff and his father that she killed her parents, his father's aide and poisoned his father (the Laird). Mora is now wanted and running for her life, but her escape attempt is hindered by the fact she is injured and on foot. When the opportunity to steal a horse arises, Mora will get more than she bargained for. Sir Gybbon Murray is a "roamer", he drifts from place to place and has no desire to set down roots. But Gybbon is a man of honor and instead of condemning Mora for trying to steal his horse, he offers to help her reach Sigimor.
They make their way to Sigimor and upon arrival, Mora is ill from the injury Robert inflicted. Instead of leaving her, Gybbon becomes her champion, promising to find Andrew and help them clear her name. He uses his considerable contacts to help Mora and her brother, reasoning she has no one else, her parents are dead and her two older brothers haven't been heard from since they left for France almost 3 years ago, Mora believes Robert had them killed too. Once she is recovered enough to leave, Gybbon takes her to his brother's keep. Upon arriving, Mora suffers a relapse and Gybbon cares for her. He and Mora become closer and Gybbon thinks that he may be ready to stop wandering. When his brother offers him land, he decides to go and take a look. He tells Mora he will return in a few days and then they will see what can be done about her problem with Robert.
Mora decides that she can resolve her problems herself by simply talking to her uncle and when Gybbon leaves, she sets out alone. But things will not work out the way Mora planned and Robert will make sure she pays for his crimes. When she is imprisoned, help comes from an unexpected source and may well save her life.
Gybbon returns to learn Mora is missing, he is sure he knows where she has gone and will need help to save her. He heads out with his brother to see Sigimor and form a plan to rescue her. At Sigimor's he learns what happened to her and meets her two brothers David and Niall, who have returned from France after several assassins sent by Robert, failed to kill them. They want to save their sister and want to know who Gybbon is to her.
They manage to save Mora, but Gybbon still has hurdles to jump before he can claim Mora as his own.
This is a well written, steady paced novel with likable characters, cameos from Sigimor/Jolene and Hartcourt/Annys, an odd little cat, a really, really vile villain, steamy-ish love scenes, some tense moments, some amusing interchanges and finally a very sweet HEA complete with an epilogue.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher.*
Sir Gybbon Murray must rescue his horse then agree to help the thief regain her land . Those Murrays can not abide injustice, and Mora wins not only her quest along with a place in his heart. Get ready to visit the highlands and settle in for a Wee While.

Highland Devil by Hannah Howell
Murray Family #22
Threatened maiden
Family away, dead, at risk
Evil cousin
Gybbon to the rescue
Freya the cat for interest
Evil thwarted
HEA for Gybbon and Mora
I like a good highland romance but this one, though I like the author’s work, seemed somewhat predictable and at times and rather unbelievable. All’s well that ends well and the book provided entertainment for the afternoon.
Thank you to Net Galley and Forever Grand for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Running from cousins who has murdered some of her family, Mora Ogilvy and her young brother are
trying to reach some of her relatives for help. Fate seems to intervene in the form of Gybbon Murray when she tries to "borrow" his horse. Lucky for her he takes her in hand and hears her story. Gybbon is determined to help her as they realize the cousins are in pursuit.
Hannah Howell always makes you feel part of the landscape and characters. Gybbon and Mora slowly fall for each other as they set out on an adventure full of many twist and turns and wonderful side characters. There was a lot of humor and a wonderful cat ( yes I love animals in stories!) that a lot of strong highlanders. What more can one ask for? Not a lot and that is why I was sorry to turn the last page. Love those wonderful Murrays!!
This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.
It has been a while since I read a Murray family book so was excited to see this one coming out! I love the references to former couples and two other couples that played a large part in the book.
While I love the "love at first sight" romances, I really enjoy watching as a couple slowly realize that they have met their "one" and the journey to until they realize that love. Gybbon was a great character and willing to help Mora when she finally confided in him.
They were constantly either on the run or trying to strategize the best way to keep Mora from her cousin's evil plan. I kept reading til late at night as I wanted to see what would happen next.
The only thing that I didn't like was that Mora was so naive and stupid to think that she could change her uncle's mind and put her self in such a dangerous position but fortunate for her, Gybbon and his family came to the rescue.
Just the right amount of romance and drama made this an excellent choice of book.
Highland justice!_______3.5 stars
Mora Ogilvy finds herself fleeing for her life from relatives who definitely seek her demise. An attempt to steal a horse leads her into the way of Sir Gybbon Murray. Of course this is just the beginning of the self inflicted and otherwise mayhem that fills the pages for these two. Along the way we engage with some favorite's from past stories.
Mora's older brothers have probably been killed off in France where they were being employed as mercenaries. Her youngest brother she guided towards safety before slipping away in another direction. Now all she has to do is survive, and maybe even more.
A pleasing read with some whimsical touches, including the rather wonderful small cat Freya and the way various characters respond to our Freya. To be honest Freya was rather the highlight for me.
So to recap we have a bordering on insane, murderous villain, an attractive, hunted young woman, a handsome highland hero, and a host of others giving a well rounded story that fits so well with Howell's Murray Family series.
A NetGalley ARC
Mora Ogilvy is desperate. Her greedy cousins are killing off her family for their property and have accused her of murder. They're after her to have her hanged. They just killed her parents and slowly poisoning their father. She gets her young brother and the only apparent heir left and hides in the forest with them chasing her running for her life. In desperation she sees Sir Gybbon Murray's horse and tries to steal (borrow) it. Funny thing Jester will buck off anyone who Gybbon hasn't said is OK. And so starts our adventure of the valent Sir Gybbon and his rescue of Mora. This was one of my favorite highland reads, that of a guardian protector. We meet old friends from the past, Camerons and MacFingals and have a delightfully creative adventure. This is one of Hannah's best. Thank you Kensington and NetGalley for the chance to review this book.
Back to the Murray family. I love when I have generations of a family to read about. My favorite secondary character is Freya! Any book with a cute and spunky cat is worth a read. Hannah Howell didn't disappoint. Great book. Recommend reading it
Overall I really enjoyed this book! It was my first book from Hannah Howell and I will definitely be trying out more.
I loved Gybbon and how protective he was of Mora! Mora was such a fantastic character and I loved how resilient she was. The two of them together made a great couple and really fit well. I have to say though some of my favorite characters were the side characters! Sigmore was fantastic as well as Jolene, I adored their dynamic and I’m definitely going to be checking to see if they had a previous book in the series! As a cat lover Freya also stole the show, what a loyal companion!
The only thing I wish had been a little different was the way Gybbon and Mora got together. It seemed a little quick to head to the bedroom and then Gybbon wasn’t sure of his feelings after. I mean it made since it just seemed a little different especially for the time period it takes place in.
Over all a super fun and entertaining read!
Hannah Howell is one of my favorite, go-to authors. And, her Highland/Murray Clan books are some of the best written. Unfortunately, this book does not hold the typical heroine normally expected of Howell’s main characters. Mora’s cousin, Robert along with his three brothers, killed her parents, tried to kill her, is searching for her and her little brother Andrew in order to kill them. She is being protected by Gybbon Murray and taken to a safe place.
About 70% through the book, she decides to try to visit her uncle, alone, without telling anyone. This is the point at which I questions Ms. Howell’s decision to let this riding off alone be part of the book. It does not fit in with the woman who has been written about up to this point. The relationship between her parents and her uncle was odd. The uncle’s disbelief of the situation and his son’s conduct did not make sense.
Also, the relationship between Gybbon and Mora did not really develop. He bussed her with a kiss on occasion when he was leaving her. Nor did they seem to spend much time in conversation. Most of their time together was traveling to get her away from her murderous cousin Robert.
The bedroom scene with the secret passage is quite funny, but seems a bit odd that family members knew about an escape route years later that should have been a secret.
The reference to "Devil" was not noticeable or clearly evident. I do not believe in publicizing a negative review, so you will not see this anywhere but on Net Galley’s website.
Highland Devil by Hannah Howell is the twenty-second book in the Murray series but can be read as a stand-alone book with little difficulty. I love Scottish romances and Ms. Howell does a great job with her well-formed characters and descriptions. The storyline is full of twists and turns as well. The main characters are Gybbon and Mora and their journey towards their happily-ever-after. This book has a slow pace but gets the job done in the end. It has a nice mix of action, romance, and deceit. As a twist of humor, we meet Mora’s cat, that gains all kinds of reactions throughout the story. It held my interest, but was not my favorite story in this series. I recommend it as part of this unique series.
Mora Ogilvy has a happy life until her cousin Robert shows up and kills both her parents on their way back from the market. It is Andrew her younger brother and she that is left. Her two older brothers went to France to fight with mercenaries, three years ago and no one has heard from them since. Sir Gybbon Murray is the brother of
the Murray's, Laird Harcourt Murray. Gybbon had the wanderlust, so he traveled and sold his sword for coin. But he preferred to sell it to relatives but was not always the case.
the characters were so lifelike and humorous. The descriptions of the land were truly lovely sounding. You kind of get an ache to see it in person. The plot has some twists but the author has kept them running straight. There are lies, murder, the killing of one's own family and hatred. Boy, when they are bad, they really are. bad. I loved this tale and it was unique in its storyline.
I received this from Net Galley and voluntarily reviewed it.
This was a very slow and mellow read for me, but that's not to say that I didn't enjoy it. The main characters were believable and endearing. I rather liked Gybbon and Mora. I liked the side characters too, and I'm sure that had I read any of the previous books I would have understood a lot more of what was going on. But I haven't, so I just went with what I was given and it didn't really affect this story I thought. I got a good chuckle here and there, but mostly I just enjoyed the interactions between Gybbon and Mora. And oh how I loved Mora's cat!! The bad guy was truly a bad guy and it was great to see him finally get his comeuppance at the end in the way he did.
Given the chance, I'm not sure how excited I would be to read more of this series. It was entertaining enough, and I liked it, but I think I have many other books that I would like more
