Knot My Sister's Keeper by Mary Marks is the sixth book in the Quilting Mystery series. Martha's daughter gifts her a DNA kit which leads Martha to discover a half sister named Giselle. Outspoken Giselle cannot provide many answers about their father who disappeared 30 years ago. Together Giselle and Martha decide to solve the murder. The mystery and the side story lines in this book kept me reading whenever I had a free moment. Giselle is a wonderful addition, and I hope to see her in future books. This book easily stands on its own, and a love or knowledge of quilting is not required. This is a wonderful addition to an amazing series.
Knot My Sister's Keeper is the first I have read in the Quilting Mystery series and I enjoyed it from front to back! I am not a quilter, so I have been hesitant to read the series. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that you definitely do not have to be a quilter to be a fan of these books. After quilter Martha Rose has her DNA submitted to an ancestry company, Martha discovers she has a half-sister, Giselle. Despite definite personality conflicts, Martha and Giselle team up to uncover the story of their father’s life and unravel a 32-year-old murder mystery. I enjoyed that the main character is over 30 years old. It’s nice to read a mystery from another generations point of view. This book is interesting, engaging and full of twists and turns. I loved the ending and you will too.
Knot My Sister's Keeper is the first I have read in the Quilting Mystery series. I am not a quilter and don’t believe you need to be to enjoy the book. I learned a lot. The descriptions were marvelous. I did not feel lost in picking up with book 2.
I found this to be topical in today’s society.
Martha Rose has lived her whole life not knowing her father, a talented artist.
Her daughter has her submit her saliva to a DNA Ancestry site. Martha Rose discovers she has a half-sister named Giselle.
Neither knows what has happened to their father. They join forces to find out what happened to their father.
What I liked about this story is:
It is well written, flows smoothly and has a delightful cast of characters.
Twists and turns to keep you guessing.
Can be read as a standalone.
I learned a lot about Jewish customs, dietary law and some words I had never heard before. I also did not know there were variations of Judiasm, other than practicing or not.
There is a history of quilting at the end of the book.
I have not read a book by this author before and I'm glad I got the chance now. This was a fun mystery. Martha Rose is an interesting character as well as her surrounding posse. Her significant other is Yossi or Crusher if you prefer. Both characters happen to be Jewish and so you learn a little bit about the customs and practices of the Jewish faith. Martha is given a DNA test as a gift. From these results she finds a half-sister she never knew about. Her father deserted her mother and she never knew him. With Giselle, her newly found sister, by her side, the two of them decided to solve the mystery of his disappearance. Great story. I enjoyed not only the story and the characters, but the writing style as well.
A superb mix of quilting, Jewish traditions, and a mystery. The quilting and Jewish references did not bog down the story with too much detail. There was just enough to inform without overwhelming the story. Loved the ending that followed the solving of the mystery. Interesting characters. Non-typical protagonist.
This is the fifth book in Mary Mark's Quilting Mystery, but the first I've read. I will definitely be seeking out books 1-4. Marks did a great job of establishing the characters and their backgrounds so the book stood, successfully on its own. Quilting unifed the established characters but also served as an element to inteoduce a new character, a half-sister discovered through ancestry-type DNA testing. The half-sister shared a her grandmosthers unfinished quilt, which revealed evidence used to solve the mystery. The Jewish customs and traditions central to the life ofmthe main character and her family were another enjoyable element to the book. Highly recommended.
Oh my word Mary Marks has pulled it out of the bag again, this one starts with Quincy (Martha's daughter) wanting to do DNA testing to see if they can find a link to her grandfather (Martha's father) who dropped out of Martha's mother's life almost as soon as he arrived .... or did he?
Martha discovers she has a half sister (and very RICH gentile half sister) who did know their father, at least until he disappeared, now Martha and Giselle need to get to know each other, they need to find out why some one altered the case notes back in the day, oh and Martha and Quincy need to plan a wedding.
Cold case murder, distractions, new family, weddings, Mary Marks has linked the lot in a smooth and seriously readable cozy mystery and I want more!
Love is in the air along with wishes to learn more about family.
Some shocking surprises are in store along with some (more) wild and crazy adventures for Martha Rose and friends. I enjoyed what we learned about Jewish customs, food and quilting along the way.
There is never a dull moment after Martha learns she is not the only child she believed herself to be for many decades. As her gray hair accumulates, so do her relatives.
And when her daughter makes her special announcement, Martha has to learn how to open her heart and mind to a very different future.
So much fun!
'Knot My Sister's Keeper' was the first book I have read in Mary Marks' Quilting Mystery series and I was fascinated with the delightful characters, the cultural instruction and the sparkling mystery. I was so captivated that I am going to go back and get the others in the series. I highly recommend this book.
HAH! That DNA test you mail in might lead to more than info about your ethnic background. Martha finds out she has a half sister, Giselle, who she refers to as G. As you might imagine, things don't go swimmingly at first but these two warm to each other as they work to figure out the mystery of their shared father. This plot line moved the latest installment in the series beyond the classic cozy as it adds a familial learning experience to the murder mystery. Well done. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. You don't need to have read the earlier books or be a quilter (I'm not) to enjoy this one. It's nicely written and will make you wonder how many other people will get this sort of surprise in the future.
Martha Rose and her quilting friends make great quilts, and they also solve mysteries. When Martha's DNA test kit gives her more new questions than answers, her friends help out.
The DNA kit turns up a half sister Martha never knew she had. Giselle, Martha's new sister, is a wealthy businesswoman. She bankrolls a lot of adventures along the way to identifying the killer of their father. Of course, there are quilt-related clues, but friends and family turn up the most important information.
Martha's family is central to the whole story, and their relationships deepen and unfold in the course of the story. It's a pleasure to read, with likeable characters and all kinds of interesting twists and turns. Plausible? Not entirely, but it's entirely enjoyable.
This book grabbed my attention from the very beginning. The story is well told and I couldn't put it down.
When Martha Rose receives a DNA test in the mail, she has no idea what her but if saliva will bring into her life.
Will she finally find out the truth about her father, or will it just simply remain a cold case?
I like the cast of characters in this book. They all work well together to bring the story to light.
I've read all the books in this series and I believe this one is my favorite.
I volunteered to read and review an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
Knot My Sister's Keeper by Mary Marks is the sixth installment in Quilting Mystery series but can be read as a standalone'.
Even though this is the first book in the series that I have read I did not have problems following the story. All references to past happenings are well introduced.
I liked that story is reasonably paced and quite interesting. There aren't too many characters but each is very distinctive. There are many references about Jewish culture and customs which are quite educational, but any religious references are simply not my cup of tea.
However I liked Marta and her half-sister Giselle, the nuances of the newly found relationship, who when discover that they are related decide to uncover the mystery about their father's disappearance.
With several twists and turns and a clever plot this book is an excellent suggestion for all mystery lovers especially to quilters.
Martha Rose, a quilter, is shocked to find a long lost half-sister after she takes a DNA test to trace her ancestry. They realize their missing father may not have abandoned them, but was murdered. Can Martha uncover the clues to find the true story behind her father’s disappearance?
This was a great cozy mystery read. I love Martha’s antics to find the truth. I also like how her friends assist her in going undercover to get information from an uncooperative source. Martha took risks in finding the truth, which is a great character trait for a long-lasting amateur sleuth. The plot had enough twists and turns to keep my pages turning. I can’t wait to the next one in the series. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.
The first book I read in this series, easy to get into the series and characters are fun and likeable. Easy to get into the story for someone who knows nothing about quilting. One can read this series out of order.
Knot My Sister’s Keeper is the sixth book in Mary Marks Quilting Mystery series. This book is well plotted and has well-developed characters. Ms. Marks’ witty and humorous writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author provides enough background information that this book can be read as a standalone. There are lots of twists and turns and enough suspects to keep the reader engaged. The final reveal surprised me. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy cozy mysteries.
Martha Rose, Lucy Mondello, Birdie Watson, and Jazz Fletcher-Watson are friends who get together once a week to quilt together, but Birdie is on her honeymoon, so she isn’t there when Martha receives an unexpected package. Unknown to Martha, her daughter, Quincy, submitted a DNA sample to an ancestry firm and after receiving the results, she ordered another kit for her mother. When Martha sends hers in and receives the results, she learns she has a younger half-sister, Giselle Cole, who lives nearby. She soon discovers that her father, who abandoned her mother when he learned she was pregnant, is Jacob Quinn Maguire, talented artist, and that Giselle knew him as a devoted husband and father, until he mysteriously disappeared when she was twelve years old. Martha had always been told he died in a train accident, but a couple of years ago, her uncle, Isaac Harris, told her that wasn’t true. Giselle showed Martha three of their father’s portraits and Martha recognized the subject as her mother, painted years after he abandoned them. Martha Rose is engaged to Yossi Levy, a/k/a the Crusher, who is an undercover agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, who offers to try to get a copy of the missing persons file related to her father’s disappearance. A lot of time has passed and many of the players are deceased or their memories faded, but the determined half-sisters set out to find out what happened to their father who has been missing for over thirty years. Both Martha and Giselle uncover lots of unsettling things about their father. Martha isn’t happy that Quincy is dating LAPD Detective Noah Kaplan, and is worried about the “big” announcement they have to make.

I have read all of Mary Marks books . I couldn't put this one down I found this one the most interesting having found out about Martha 's father and how he disappeared 30 years ago re opening up a cold case .A few twists and surprises really enjoyable to read . Love to read about quilting.
Look forward to Mary's next book .
A rare 5 star review from me. I have read all the books in this series and reviewed most if not all. Not sure if I've given another a 5 star, but I give one to Knot because I didn't want to put the book down and go to bed.
The story line is really unique and complicated. I like how Martha and Giselle maturely handle the shocking news and each other. The way the author even weaves in quilting as part of the story is realistic and well done. You also really couldn't see where the story was going to take you next.
For fans of the secondary characters: Birdy is absent in this one. Lucy and Jazz pop up and help out, but have minimal roles as does Crusher.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
This series gets better and better. I love an over 50 female protagonist. Within the mystery the author always gives great history and information. Ms. Marks gives us a new character who I adore. The dialog is funny, and smart. More please 😊
With all the new DNA tech out there, this book is right on trend with what could happen with results, very interesting plot and I enjoyed the various facts sprinkled into the story. Well done.
