I had heard many times from my customers how good a writer Kevin O'Brien is so I thought I better read him so I can talk to my customers about him. I am SOOOOO happy I did!

I loved everything about this book. It had every.......Thriller, family unity, strong female characters and so much more. I can not wait to read more by Kevin O'Brien.

He is my new favorite male author!

Whew! This was another edge-of-your-seat ride with Kevin O'Brien. I love his books and they never disappoint.

This story grabs you from the first page and has you holding your breath, cringing in fear, and wondering if you can figure out "who dunnit." The intrigue is spot-on and the characters are well developed. You feel like you can read their mind and know exactly what they will do because the author provides enough detail into their persona. You experience wealthy status that is abused, mental illness, dysfunctional family situations, questions as to marital unfaithfulness. You will experience a little bit of everything!

I have to say that I was still having second thoughts up through the last page. I kept wondering if there would be one more twist before I read the last page and closed the book.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I love being given the opportunity to read Kevin O'Brien's books. He is one of my favorite authors!

They Won't be Hurt is a definite psychological thriller. Kevin O'Brien hooked me in the first few chapters with the set up! I did feel that the story had a lot of predictable moments, except for the heroine - her actions were not predictable. I found that unsettling, and I think it stems from her character profile's lack of complexity and layers. Mr. O'Brien offers tremendously in depth, fully dimensional villains, but the heroine and her family seemed two dimensional. I went with 4 stars because Mr. O'Brien kept me reading and eager for the outcome of the novel. For the most part I would say he kept the promise of the premise.

3.5 Hearts I have read other books from O’Brien but this was not one of my favorites. The story is good and had some suspense but there were so much extra wording that the thrill left this thriller.

I am not sure why there are so many filler words but it really takes a lot from this story and the reader loses a lot of the suspense. But as I said the story itself is good. But I am not sure you won’t find yourself skipping lines.

They Won’t Be Hurt – Kevin O’Brien
I was fortunate to receive this novel from Netgalley.com as an Advance Reader Copy, in exchange for an objective review.
Scott Singleton, a former football player turned evangelist, is found dead in his home, along with his entire family, the apparent victims of a homicidal rage. The prime suspect, Joe Mulroney, the property caretaker, reportedly found the carnage, after having slept in his apartment all night, not hearing a thing. Held in protective custody by the police as they seek to find evidence to charge him, but he escapes their surveillance with the help of his friend, Vic. Now presumed guilty, there is a massive manhunt ongoing for the two men.
Laura Getchell is a retired teacher, and she and her husband Sean now own and operate a winery in Leavenworth, WA. Sean has just left for a business trip out of the country, and Laura and three children remain home. As she watches the television of the Singleton murder, she can’t help but cringe.
Shortly thereafter, she hears someone at the front door, twisting and turning the knob, then eyes peering at her through the mail slot – eyes she recognizes from the television coverage an hour ago. Then she hears glass breaking…
As Laura’s children are held hostage, Laura finds herself forced to leave them behind as she takes a trip to seek out proof of Joe Mulroney’s innocence. As she looks for the person Joe sends her to find, it soon becomes apparent that the Singleton murder was anything but random – and that someone will do whatever it takes to keep their secrets safe…
I enjoyed this novel, as I do all of Kevin O’Briens work! The story was a bit slow in places but picks up speed rapidly once it becomes apparent that this is more than just a random home invasion. As I followed Laura’s odyssey, and the good versus evil intent that seems to dominate the relationship of the home invaders, I found myself anxious to flip the pages – in hopes that Laura and her family are reunited, safe and sound. Great story, and a good ending!!

Loved, loved, loved this story. This isn't the typical Kevin O'Brien book, but it is just as good as all the rest. They won't be hurt starts out with a entire family (famous football player and his entire family) being found dead. The police are sure they know who did it, the caretaker for the property, Joe. The police put Joe into a hotel and guard him, he's not under arrest, just a person if interet. Vic, one of Joe's old buddys from the "country club" aka psyciatric hospital, which Vic broke out of. Well know their fugitives. They, well Vic, hijacks a news reporter (the island is crawling with them) and has him drive them to a undisclosed location. Vic throws the reporter out and leaves him for dead. Vic drives himself and Joe to a vineyard in washington, also the home of Mrs. Gretchell, Joeys 3rd grade teacher. Joe need Lauras help to prove his innocents, but, will she be able to get the info she needs? plus, Laura has to leave her 3 children with these killers, will she do it, and if she does, will the kids still be alive when she returns with the info Joe needs....and someone really needs to take care of Vic, the heartless killer. This is a MUST READ!!!! :)

I want to start by saying I am a pretty big fan of this author. I have read all but a few of his books and I own the majority of ones I’ve read. I frequently recommend his books.
They Won’t Be Hurt was such a twisty, edge of the seat, fast read. I would think I had it figured out then something would be revealed. The reason I give this 4 stars and not 5 is because I’m just not happy with the mom. She is a great, likeable character. My issue with her are her decisions. I understand wanting to help the guy, but leaving her children to go on this wild goose chase......just doesn’t sit right with me. I know that leaving them was what made a bulk of the story. Overall, it was really good. I loved all the ‘gaspy’ type moments. It all wrapped up quite nicely.

This book started off really strong, so much so that I was convinced I had a 5 star read on my hands, but then things just ..... fell apart. Laura acts and reacts in a way that I could never imagine a mother as doing, not even under the duress she was in. As a mother myself, I could not imagine behaving nor speaking in the manner that she does.

I will say that this story is full of the unexpected, there were times when I was surprised at the direction the author took when I was so sure the book was heading in a different direction entirely. There was also a lot to this book that I felt could have been condensed or left out altogether - something that I feel would have helped with the flow of the story making it less repetitive, and also that would have helped keep and hold the readers interest. Unlike other books I have read in this genre, I found this one easy to set down and come back to at a later time.

I do believe this story may appeal to fans of psychological thrillers, and I would read more from this author, however this particular story was just not for me.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

The premise for this to be a great mystery was there, but I found that it fell short for me. The plot seemed to drag on and I had a hard time staying invested. I put this down a few times and had to force myself to pick it back up.

This book was a crazy ride that I almost didn't want to finish because it was boring . I'm glad that I did because the ending was good

This was just an okay book. It's nowhere near as good as his other books. It's a bit drawn out and some parts just drag. I hope the next book he writes puts him back on the right track.

Review: THEY WON'T BE HURT by Kevin O'Brien

Home invasion novels. Never knew how they frightened me until I read a psychological suspense thriller a few years ago: THE LITTLES by Tallulah Grace. Then I read HOUSEBROKEN by The Behrg and THE INVASION by Brett McBean. (All excellent novels, by the way.) Along the way, I picked up terrifying home invasion references in other fiction, some of which STILL stick in my head. Now I have THEY WON'T BE HURT, which I selected because of the author. Here is Home Invasion with Implacability. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Your home is not your Castle. At least it's not impregnable, because the Barbarians are at the Gates.. No, at the Door...No, in your house...and they're holding your children--hostage. How incredibly terrifying is that?

They Won’t Be Hurt by Kevin O’Brien is a thriller.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Kensington Books, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

My Synopsis:
Laura Gretchell, her husband Sean, and three children have recently moved to Leavenworth, Washington and bought a Vineyard. Her eldest, Sophie is sixteen, and adjusting well. So is twelve year old Liam. Four year old Jamie loves pre-school. Laura had been a full-time teacher in Seattle for years, and then, a little bit before Sophie was born, she came to the aid of Joey Spiers, a small boy who was always being bullied by another student (not to mention being abused by his mother). The father of the bully took offence, and Laura has the scars to prove it. Since then, she has only been a substitute teacher, trying not to get too close to her students. Their move to Leavenworth will be a fresh start. Her husband is currently away on a buying trip in Europe.

Pool little Joey ended up being raised by his Grandmother, thanks to Laura’s help. But when his Grandmother died, Joey went a little crazy, beat someone up, and ended up in a Mental Hospital. But he is better now. Joey is the caretaker of the vacation property for the wealthy Singleton family. Scott Singleton is a former Seahawks linebacker, turned self-ordained minister, who started his own religious sect called the Church of the True Divine Light. When the whole family is found bound, gagged and stabbed to death inside the compound, and a boyfriend of the eldest girl is shot, Joey is the prime suspect. How can he have slept through all the carnage? Joey tries to help the police, but when his old friend Victor Moles from the Mental Hospital shows up, Joey is convinced to run.

Joey and Vic show up at Laura’s, where Joey is convinced Laura will save him again. Unfortunately, Vic is a sociopath with his own agenda. Suddenly Laura’s family is being held captive by the pair, and she is being forced to go out and prove Joey’s innocence. But she has a lot of ground to cover, and time is short.

My Opinions:
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It seemed to have a slow start, but when it picked up speed, it was hard to put down. It ended up being a very fast easy read. I loved the characters (well, most of them), and they had enough depth to make them seem real. Told from different viewpoints, the story leapt from one action-packed chapter to the next. Great suspense continued to build with each mile Laura put on.

Definitely have to read more of Kevin O’Brien’s books!

Very fast paced and written quite well.. Sucks you in and your on the edge of your seat wondering who dunnit. Great type of book to read

Unfortunately, this was not a great book for me. While in some spots the author did an amazing job of getting suspense going and having you entwined in the story, in other spots it seemed to drag on too much; and focus on things that were not as important to me, in a thriller book. I did not think it was the best type of thriller for me, but had heard the author was amazing and had to give it a try. I think it would've been a much better book, if there was not as much fill in and more thrills. Will be telling Chapter Chatter Pub that it's being released, so members have a chance to check it out!

This is the first book that I didn't like by this author. Usually in the past I have not had problems jumping right into the book and reading it. Yet, this time, it felt like the story just kept going on a continuous loop.

There was action but it was slow burning. This did not help the story. The intensity needed to be stronger as a lot of the story was just happening in a house with a small core group of characters. I kept with this book because of the author. Although, there were times when I did skim it to make it go faster.

When I got to the ending, I would say it was a bit of a disappointment. Overall, I was kind of bored with this book. I hope that the next book scores with me.

I have read everything by Kevin O"Brien and his dialogue and pace is usually spot on.

While this one was interesting and I did not know which direction the plot would take me, I also have to say that the dialogue was a little silly at times and the writing was a bit slow - not typical for O'Brien at all.

The plot itself was fun and had me guessing, which is a big plus for me when it comes to this type of book. I hate figuring out the ending before I get to the ending and O"Brien does a great job of keeping me in the dark.

Good read.
