This type of thriller is not my typical style, but it sucked me for an afternoon. It's fast-paced, dramatic, and has awesome descriptions of Washington State that make me want to visit again.
Thank you to NetGalley and Pinnacle Publishing for letting me preview this title which will hit store shelves on July 31. I always know what I’m going to get with one of Kevin’s books – a thrill a minute, good dialogue and a very readable thriller. However, this one started out a bit slow and contrived. In order to make all the plot pieces fall into place, he manipulated the storyline a little flagrantly, I thought. But after I rode that out, the book got really good. He weaved a lot of tension throughout the last 2/3s of the book. I was on the edge of my seat. Then he jarred me by saying Washington State didn’t have the death penalty, but we do. After that everything was smooth sailing to the home stretch. Good teenage rebellion and lots of family drama helped to make the tale realistic. Can’t wait for Kevin’s next novel.
Joe Singleton, ex NFL player, now leader of Church Of The Divine Light and his family are all brutally murdered. The caretaker is the prime suspect but he has escaped custody, with some help. Laura Gretchell is home alone when the fugitives break in. When her children arrive home they are used as weapons to get Laura to help. Someone else doesn’t want the truth of the murders to come out so Laura and her children are in danger from two sides.
There is plenty of suspense in this book and some twists. I figured out parts of the mystery and motivation for the killings but some of it caught me by surprise. To me this book was a little long, some parts could have been condensed a bit. This is why I would give this book 3 1/2 stars. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
This book was quite an intense roller coaster ride. The more I read, the more I needed to uncover the mystery behind the Singleton murders, and while part of it was expected, the reasoning behind it all was not.
I felt that the characters were all believable enough even though some were absolutely loathsome, and some aspects of the story were a little unbelievable, but fiction is as fiction does. I enjoyed this story, and sometimes struggled to find a decent place to pause and pick it up later, such was the suspense and the thrill of the layers being peeled back.
Thank you to Kevin O’Brien, Kensington Books, and NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
For me this book was too long and boring...Maybe if it was shorter I would have enjoyed it more..It was tedious to read and very repetitive...I would not even consider it that suspenseful.. I would not recommend this book.
This is an edge of your seat thriller. What would you do if someone grabbed your 3 kids and threatened to kill them if you did not help them? A nightmare for any parent. Kept you guessing till near the end of the story
A horrific crime in Washington state leaves a TV preacher and his entire family, including five children have been butchered. The police believe the caretaker of the vacation home is the killer, but he’s in the wind. Laura Getchell is horrified by the news, she’s home alone with her children when someone tries to force their way into her home. With her children’s lives on the line, Laura will do and say whatever she has to to keep them safe. A story to read with the lights on!
