This one just didn't work for me. Sorry. I just couldn't get into the characters or the setting. The description was better than the book
While opposites can certainly be said to attract, extreme opposites, not so much. Wealthy widow, Lady Charlotte Rutherford’s behavior constantly courts scandal. Her cousin is determined to tame her and convinces his friend, Albert, to moderate her behavior. Albert is known for his good bearing and moral standing. Although there is an instant physical attraction, the two are extreme opposites in beliefs and actions. There is much to like about this book. The writing is fine and the premise amusing. However, the resolution feels too sudden. The two opposites appear to remain opposite until Albert insults Charlotte at a dinner party and his peers shun him for his comments. This criticism by his peers is what suddenly causes Albert to reevaluate his beliefs, leading to a pleasing, but not entirely believable resolution.
I finished this book about three weeks ago. It was okay. A quick beach/pool side book that didn't require my undivided attention. After a few weeks, I don't really recall much about the characters. Some stories and characters say with me long after I have finished reading about them. These did not.
This book was a decent read. It was slow to start but picked up enough throughout the story to a brilliant finish at the end. Characters were okay. Storyline was good. Overall good read.
What do you get when you have a sassy, sexy widow and a priggish nobleman? Lots of chemistry. Lady Charlotte loves to shock the ton and her family has had enough of her bad behavior. Her cousin Cedric sees her as being on a collision course with disaster and decided drastic measures must be taken. To fix her behavior he enlists the help of Albert. Albert is a bit of a snob and a stickler for proper behavior. He has a bet with Charlotte that he can turn her into a proper lady before she can corrupt him. A serious battle of wills takes place with them ultimately falling in love. I enjoyed the book. It was a cute read. My only complaint was that I do not feel the ton would have just laughed off Charlotte 's antics but would have shunned her for bad behavior. This is a new author for me and I will definitely read her again. I received this book from Net Galley for an honest review and no compensation.
3.5 Stars
Lady Charlotte a young widow goes to great lengths to keep her scandalous reputation, feeling no remorse whatsoever for her unconventional social behaviour. Cedric, her cousin, thinks she's an embarrassment to their extended family and decides to embark on the impossible task of reformation. In doing so, he engages a man known for his untainted moral character and respectability among his peers. Albert Beckett eagerly accepts the quest to reform Charlotte, feeling it his moral duty. Charlotte, on the other hand, finds Albert to be a pompous aristocrat, who she spitefully decides to corrupt as he attempts to transform her character.
An enjoyable read which on the whole flowed well. However I found both Charlotte & Albert hard to relate to. I found Charlotte the more likeable of the two, she was determined to be painted as the scarlet woman & he definitely was a pompous ass. I found his about turn too much & too quick. It was a fun light read ideal for a quick holiday read
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
It's a double Pygmalion tale you won't want to miss.
Lady Charlotte is less than proper while Lord Albert is more than proper. They both accept a wager from Charlotte's cousin, Cedric, to reform the other. And let the games begin.
I thought Charlotte and Albert were well-developed characters and enjoyed their contest of wills. However, the ending seemed a bit rushed and quick--everything was resolved very fast!
Many thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
Lady Charlotte has never been one to be shy and demure. But she is honest, loyal and caring. She was widowed about 6 months ago but didn't wear her widow's weeds long. In public, she prefers to wear off the shoulder gowns that "show her assets". Many people adore her but there are those that are aghast at her improper behavior.
Lady Charlotte's cousin, Cedric, loves her dearly but would like her to be a little more proper. He comes up with a plan and makes a contest between Charlotte and a man, Lord Albert. Lord Albert is a bit of a prig. He is boring and predictable and follows the rules of society to a tee. Cedric makes a contest between the two that they will try to reform each other. The one who succeeds at changing the other will win. Bets are even taken at the gentleman's club as to which one will be the winner.
As Charlotte and Albert go to different events that of each other's choosing they find that they are both stubborn. They are exposed to things outside of their comfort zone. Albert learns that he has little compassion and understanding for anyone outside of his class. Charlotte seems to be very fun loving and kind.
Who will be the winner? This story was ok. I agree with other readers that the ending seemed rushed.
Loved the book. The challenge initiated by Cedric to his cousin, Charlotte (to seduce Beckett) and Lord Beckett (to reform Charlotte)was extremely well written. The bantering between the two kept your attention to the point you wanted to know what would happen next. It turns out Charlotte is not the spoiled, self-indulgent woman Albert thought her to be and Albert learned not to be a snob. It is a book full of humor and laughs. I would highly recommend this book for a great read. I received a copy thru Netgalley.
Lady Charlotte by Vicki Hopkins was a fun, short read that had me laphing and crying. It was such a great story of redemption. both of the characters had something to learn. It was wonderful to see them reach their HEA.
Lady Charlotte by Vicki Hopkins is the story of Charlotte and Albert.
Charlotte was a young widow whose older husband died and she is trying to enjoy her new life. Although, her cousin Cedric feels she has gone to far with it and ask his friend Albert to reform her.
Charlotte sees Albert as a strait lace, by the book...stiff person so she only agrees to this if he will agree to go along with her on some of her 'scandalous' activities.
The betting books are hot with who is going to reform who for sure. But soon their feelings start to take over and all bets are off.
This is not the usual historical romance story. It deviates from the usual staidness and normalization of society. It instead shows flair and dramatics that make it a powerful tale of the types of changes that were taking place in England at the end of the 19th century. The characters were jovial and funny which are a direct foil to Albert’s rigidity. Eventually he recognizes his need for joy de vivre and comes around.
A historical romance with an interesting premise, Lady Charlotte follows two opposing sides hellbent on bringing the other to their own side. Charlotte herself is an absolute delight. Strong, humorous, and comfortable with her own sexuality, she is everything you don’t typically find in historical romances. Her counterpart Albert, however, is exactly what you’d expect from a snobby Lord. Their interaction with both hilarious and filled with chemistry.
I honestly expected the story to go in a different direction but was delightfully proven wrong. This story was everything I wanted it to be and more with well fleshed out characters, an entertaining storyline, and a satisfying ending.
On bet from the lady's cousin, an Edwardian prig and a free-thinking widow engage in a battle of reverse Pygmalions, Can she tone it down and be more socially acceptable? Can he stop being an obstinate snob? Will they fall in love with the softer versions of one another?
When I request an ARC, I promise to always give a fair and honest review. That promise is never an issue when i get a delightful story like this. So well written. The hero in the story is a pompous ass and his heroine counterpart is a big hearted hoyden! When the two meet and mix, fireworks fly. How will this story end? you will need to read it and find out.
Lady Charlotte is a beautiful, spirited, scandalous widow and her family feels that she must be taken in hand. Her cousin Cedric feels that Lord Beckett a strict moralist is the very one to teach her how to behave. Charlotte insists that she should have a chance to reform Albert also known as a pompous ass. The bets go on in a gentleman's club as to who will win. Charlotte takes Albert to a few of her favorite places ,he is scandalized but goes. Underneath the reputation for doing as she pleases is an honest ,tender heart for the people around her. On a trip to meet his family as a test, Albert realizes that he loves her but when she spurns him, he wants to win her back but being overly pompous and rude gets him smacked in the jaw.. Will Albert get over himself and win Charlotte or remain steadfast in his ideal of what a woman should be? I adored this book. The heroine made the hero work on himself instead of falling into his arms. I received this book from Net Galley for an honest review and no compensation otherwise.
It is six months after Lady Charlotte's elderly husband has died and she is living her scandalous life with plenty of money to do as she pleases. Her cousin, Cedric worries about her and decides to do something to bring her around to being more socially acceptable. He gives the challenge to his very straight laced friend Albert Beckett to change her. Charlotte agrees to what they ask if Albert will do one of her chosen events after she does what he asks. Before long things get completely out of hand for Albert. They do some interesting events together and though Charlotte can be all Albert wants she will not give up her other things she likes to do. Soon Albert finds there is more to Charlotte than he thought. The fun of the story is to see who will succeed with the other..
I ve read Vicki Hopkins books , she is an brilliant author ... so was a bit disappointed with this book ... i found the book ok ...It was very predictable also found the characters portrayed went overboard in there emotions & actions ...
Lady Charlotte is a widow bold, open, brash & scandalous & doesn't believe in being conventional, Albert Beckett is a honest, straight but also arrogant , untainted man with a remarkable reputation ...He accepts the challenge to reform Lady Charlotte's character ...From here the story begins of how they both fall in love & change one another's outlook ....It's a light Regency Romance ...
What a fun read this was! Two people, Lady Charlotte and Albert, Lord Beckett have extremely opposite personalities. The former enjoys her scandalous reputation but there is more to Charlotte than her outward appearance. Albert is strait laced and correct in all his ways and gives little thought to those less fortunate. It was enthralling to read of their differences but also how they affected each other. This is ideal for a light hearted summer time read. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
