A MARSHAL'S PROMISE by Michelle Beattie. I enjoyed this story a lot. I liked Logan and Paige and felt their connection and their chemistry. They both have some hangups about entering a relationship but witnessing their journey was heartfelt and warm. The storyline kept my interest as it has some mystery and a touch of danger as well. Ms. Beattie has a nice writing style that flows and makes it easy for the reader to keep pace and follow along. I truly enjoyed this one and recommend it to anyone that likes an historical western romance. (received ARC from NetGalley for honest review)
A lovely historical romance (my favorite). The hero, Logan, falls in love with Paige. her husband was killed and she is still grieving for him. So Logan doesn't think he has a chance. However, Logan is able to bring her out of her grief and make her realize it's time to move on. There were a few steamy love scenes. And I love a happily ever after ending.
Book five in the Frontier Montana series, A Marshall’s Promise is a historical western with all the ingredients of a John Wayne movie. Set on the fictitious Diamond K ranch on the banks of the Yellowstone River, this book is all about a second chance at love for widowed Rancher Paige Kelly, who meets US Marshall Logan McCall, the second man she will fall in love with, after shooting him in the thigh.
With Logan injured, cattle on Paige’s ranch being killed regularly and a band of outlaws on the loose, there is plenty of action to keep the story moving, and move it did. I couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough and thoroughly enjoyed watching Paige and Logan grow closer. I liked the levels of danger thrown in along the way as it was hard to guess until the end exactly who was responsible for what and who Paige and Logan should trust.
Although there are links to the other three books in the series, this story stands alone nicely and provides a thoroughly entertaining read.
Deputy U.S Marshal Logan McCall finds he needs to recover from being shot by mistake along with helping the young woman who shot him find out who is trying to take the land. Sparks fly as these two work together. Enjoyed the story line and characters.
Ebook from netgalley and publisher with thanks. Opinions are entirely my own.
Well, I've done it again--requested an advance reader copy of what I thought was a contemporary western romance only to discover that it's an historical western romance and I can't remember the last time I read one, but it's been more than few years. Also, as usual, I'm starting to read a series that wasn't billed as one, starting from the fifth novel in that series, and it's also the first time I've read this author. With all those issues, it was a very good read, and it get's 4.5 stars from this reader.
We first meet the heroine, Paige Kelly as she enters Sheriff Grady's office in her small Montana town. She's been widowed for about 10 months, but ever since she and her now deceased husband, Alex, bought the Diamond K ranch they've been finding some of their cattle killed and gutted. She believes the culprit to be John Barton, one of the wealthiest men in town, whose property borders hers, and who wants to expand his already huge spread. Once again, her two ranch hands, Two-Bit and Jesse, have found yet another dead steer, and Sheriff Grady's attitude toward and treatment of Paiger as an unreliable witness, or even a complainant, is to to make light of her, her lack of an eyewitness, and it doesn't help at all that he's a good friend of John Barton. She warns the sheriff that she wants an investigation, and when Grady gives her the brush-off, she warns him that if he does nothing about her complaint, she'll take matters into her own hands.
We next meet the hero, Deputy U.S. Marshall Logan McCall, as he's hot on the trail of a gang of thieves who have been wanted for some time and who just robbed the train. When he comes upon a a gutted steer on the ground and when he notices it's still alive, he does the humane thing and shoots it to end its suffering, but talk about bad timing--Paige just happens to see a man shooting one of her steers, and she makes good on her promise to the sheriff and shoots Logan in the leg. It's only afterwards that she learns that she just shot a lawman, and while shocked and appalled at what she's done, she manages to get Logan back to her small ranch house, dig the bullet out of his leg and sew him up. She can't apologize enough and ends up taking care of the injured man, and eventually, becoming attracted to the handsome lawman. She's shocked at herself because the only man that's ever interested her since she was a young girl and first set eyes on the brother of her best friend, Violet, and the man whom she eventually married, is the now deceased, Alex Kelly. Ten months later, after buying and moving to the small ranch she and her husband purchased, she's now 24 years old, widowed and alone, but besides being devastated by the death of her beloved husband in a blizzard, and suspecting he was was murdered, this brave, strong and stalwart woman, is unafraid of a hard days' work, and manages to carry on and keep the ranch going.
When Logan hears her story, he's outraged by the sheriff's treatment of her and he decides to stick around, take time to allow his injured leg to heal, and help Paige catch whoever is killing her cattle, especially since he's now unable to physically continue hunting the Bolten gang, and also because he's become as attracted to Paige as she has to him--i's no surprise that there's a romance brewing. As a lawman, one who's all too often away from home hunting down wanted criminals, sometimes for months at a time, he's already chosen the law over his early dreams of having a small ranch of his own, and he has some guilty secrets in his troubled past that to him make marriage, a ranch and a family an impossible dream.
While the plot of this novel isn't a new one in this genre, what drew me in and kept reading until almost dawn, was how well it was written, how well the characters were developed, how deeply Ms. Beattie delved into what made these two characters act as they did, and she also had more than a few mysteries and surprises along the way too--I wasn't expecting a whodunit, but this novel definitely included more than one.
As Paige and Logan became intimate, there was also some steam added, but it was done with a degree of delicacy and emotion that I found extremely appealing. At first I dreaded starting to read a series at book #5, but aside from a few mentions of supporting characters who appeared in earlier novels, this one worked perfectly for me as a standalone, and because I enjoyed this read so much, I'll happily get my hands on and read the previous 4 novels in this series. It really is that good.
My only issue is that although the pace of this novel is a tad slow to unfold, the HEA ending of this novel seemed a bit rushed and a bit too short in comparison, but all things considered, I have no reservations about recommending this enjoyable read.
As already stated, I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
Refreshingly different from the normal fare, in a number of ways. Not the same old story told over, even if some of the tropes were still in place. The only annoyance was the prolonged angst driving the male lead. It felt a bit overdone. An enjoyable read.
This is book five in the Frontier Montana series and I have read and enjoyed them all.
Paige, a widow, shots Logan, a marshal, she thought she had a good reason, but what she thought was wrong, she was mistaken, and he could have arrested her, but that is not the way the story goes.
If you love a historical western this one should keep you enthralled as you turn the pages, it did me. Oh I almost forgot, it’s very romantic.
I enjoyed this book. However it came towards the end of my book obsession for the wild west. I enjoyed it but it did take me longer than usual to read .

The first thing that attracted me to this book was the cover...um HELLO HOTNESS!!! The description grabbed my attention next so I figured I'd give it a shot.
What neither the cover nor the description say is that this book takes place in the 1800's. Yup, not what I was expecting at all. I'm not a fan of historical romance books and wouldn't have been interested in this book despite the cover if it had been mentioned.
That said, I tried to give it a chance. But following horse prints through the desert, saloons and train hopping outlaws just didn't do it for me.
I'm sure if you enjoy the historical genre this book would be perfect for you.
This was a quick book that I did not want to put down. As soon as I started reading I was hooked. Both Logan and Paige were well crafted characters with a storyline that entertaining.
Michelle Beattie 5th installment in her Frontier Montana series continues to give us a fresh look at a western romance. In this installment. Paige has had problems one her land since they purchased it. Cattle being slaughtered wasn't bad enough. Her husband died 9 months ago and Paige doesn't believe that it was an accident. She will not leave her ranch and their dream. Being a woman running a ranch by herself would be impossible. Which is why she is grateful for her two ranch hands. She accidentally shot a marshal thinking he's the one killing her cattle. He turns out to not only want to help her but also makes her feel things she hasn't in a long time. While trying to prove a neighboring rancher is responsible for all her trouble including her husband's death. They trust the wrong person and instead of losing her ranch she may lose her life.
I’m going to miss this series, in fact I can see a re-read of it in my near future. The chance to step into the frontier town that is one of my favorite modern day fictional locations was priceless and completely enjoyable. A Marshal’s Promise delivered a touching love story with touches of danger and mystery – and brought back some well loved characters as well. I always hope that there will be more stories for any loved series, and if this is truly the last I’ll be content – but one can always dream of more, right?
Paige is defending her ranch the only way she knows how… with a gun and gumption. It’s too bad that the man she did shoot wasn’t the bad guy she thought he was but a U.S. Marshal instead. Now she’s really done it. But Logan isn’t about to arrest her, he’s more inclined to hang around and help put an end to the threats she’s been facing as others try to come in and take what is lawfully hers. Neither expected to find love during this fight but the heart knows when it’s found the perfect match. Logan and Paige have issues to be dealt with, a mystery to solve, nasty villains to put down and a life together to plan. Sometimes the thing we need the most is right in front of us, and for this couple that would be each other and a love to last a lifetime on the frontier.
If you love Western Historical Romance, especially with a bit of steam added, then you’d enjoy A Marshal’s Promise and the entire Frontier Montana series. I’d definitely recommend these stories of strong men and women who faced down the dangers of a growing country and found love along the journey. Yeah, I’m gonna miss this series, that’s for sure.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

I look forward to reading the other books in this series.
The Old West Montana is the setting for a lone widow fighting for her farm and a Marshal seeking a bandit game, combining for a whirlwind of romance, deceit and doubts.
This is a great portrayal of the trials of a widow trying to keep her farm from ruin by a ruthless land baron and the local sheriff. Paige Kelly has been trying to nail the person killing off her stock and receives no help from the sheriff. When she unintentionally shoots a US Marshal, Logan McCall, he decides to help her while he recovers at her farm. They cannot ignore the sparks and chemistry and, even though Logan has vowed to leave when the crooks are captured, Paige cannot stop her development of deep feelings for him. She is certain that her grit and determination will change his plans.
If you want to get lost in an historical western romance, with a side of suspense, then this is the book! Deputy Marshal Logan meets his match in widow Paige. Each have their reasons for forming a pact in order for justice to be served for everyone: he wants to get a hold of a notorious gang and she wants to find the man responsible for her husband’s death and the continual slaughter of her cattle. Who’s really responsible will keep you guessing. Amidst all this intrigue, is the development of feelings for each other.
If you like books by Michelle Beattie this is another great one. "A Marshal´s Promise is just as good as the other books in the "Frontier Montana" series. This is book 5. It´s part of a series and this one can be read as a stand alone but you always get a little more out of the bigger picture if you read the whole series. And this is just such a good one. If you like historical romance stories with a western twist, this is the book for you.
A Marshal's Promise by Michelle Beattie is a historical romance that has strong characters. Looking for outlaws, Deputy U.S Marshal Logan McCall ends up on the wrong side of a widow rancher. It is a case of wrong first assumptions. These characters are independent, determined and have a strong sense of right and wrong. In other words they are perfect for each other if the bad guys can just be stopped.
The plot is enjoyable and the characters interesting, making this a satisfying Frontier Montana read. Historical romance with an edge of danger. I can just see a young John Wayne as Logan McCall!
An ARC of the book was given to me by the publisher through Net Galley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Logan and Paige have such a great story. I really enjoyed the way their story unfolds and develops. Love the story, adore the characters (especially Logan) and can’t wait for the next book in the series!
A Marhsl's Promise, book five in the Frontier Montana series by Michelle Beattie. A great series. I've enjoyed reading about Logan's story. This story had great character development and dialogue. I look forward to reading more by this author.
This is the fifth book in the series but don’t let that stop you. The story is so good and can easily stand alone.
The story centres on Logan a U.S. Marshall who is chasing a gang of train robbers. When he finds an injured steer he is mistakenly shot by Paige who thinks he is one of the men chasing her off her land. Paige takes Logan home and together they learn to love again. It is a lovely story which is well worth a read.
I received this novel from net galley and the publisher for an honest review.
