I did not this was BL when I requested this. Anyway, I liked the art style. The story was not that good. Just the usual trope.

My first question is how is this book not more popular? In this futuristic Neo-Tokyo, crime is rising rapidly in the wake of a new generation of super-drugs capable of enhancing the user's physical and mental abilities. So hangers and their handlers deal with these baddies. I love the concept of this book and honestly hope this becomes more mainstream because it is not only phenomenal art but a kick ass story.

Wow!

Not a title that I knew about previously but it's certainly an interesting one. I enjoyed the artwork and the overall story, as well as the worldbuilding, is certainly interesting.

I really enjoyed this manga! Need to read part 2 soon. Unfortunately it’s just a dualogy!

The setting takes place in the future, where Nanomachines are used as drugs. They can make you faster and can heal some illnesses. Criminals abusing this drugs for their own and the addicts are called hanger. Hangers will be recruited for to work with a special police unit. Hajime is not amused when he finds out that he’s new partner is a hanger. But soon they will grow together...

3.5/5 Stars

Last summer I went looking for more science fiction manga to read and had a hard time finding ones I was interested in. About a week into my search, I saw this volume up on Netgalley and decided to give it a try. I really enjoyed it! Like, I enjoyed it enough to request an ARC of the second volume as soon as it went up.

First up, lets talk about the illustrations. I loved the art style that the mangaka used! It's kind of that classic BL anime style but I really appreciated it. Nobody's hands were too big for their bodies and it didn't look too cartoonish. And I liked how none of the potential love interests looked like they were twelve. As much as I love BL/yaoi manga, that trend still kind of creeps me out.

I loved the world and the worldbuilding. The idea of a society that throws itself into finding a way to circumvent disease was a thrilling one and I'm always a sucker for a story that uses nanotech. I loved how the author took that miracle cure and gave it a dark side. I was fascinated by how the nano machines were used as an upper to make super powered criminals called Hangers. And the powers each person received were unique and varied. As were the consequences of gaining those powers. I think that was my favorite part of reading this manga; finding out what each Hanger's power was and the addiction that came with gaining it.

I really enjoyed the characters but I will admit that they weren't as fleshed out as I would have liked. But this is the first volume in a series so I'm interested to see and learn more about all of the characters as it continues. As of right now, the characters I really want to know more about are Hibiki and Hashima.

One thing that bothered me and took away from my enjoyment of this volume was how the author kept explaining what a Hanger was. I understand that when things are being serialized some things need to be reiterated in the next chapter but this was beat to death and was sometimes mentioned multiple times in a chapter.

Overall, I really liked it and I'm excited to carry on with the series. I can't wait to see where the author takes the story!

The plot is interesting and the concept is great but I had issues with the execution of the plot. The text was also so small that it was a struggle to finish reading this.

I'm sorry, I really tried. This book is absolutely illegible. Not sure what went wrong in the proofing process but it's a definite problem. (I trust and hope that the finished product doesn't look like this!)

4.2 stars: How is this not more popular?

Hanger manga vol. 1: An action-packed cyberpunk manga with some Fantastically well developed romance to boot with including my new favourite genre of romance, boy's love

The calendar is gone and has been replaced by the anno scientia. The society is focused on science and preventing a great plague from happening once again. All humans are augmented or adapted with implants to make them better - but some become obsessed with this. What I find fascinating is that implantation of technology has become an indie fascination and obsession, so this isn't far from the truth.

In this futuristic Neo-Tokyo, crime is rising rapidly in the wake of a new generation of super-drugs capable of enhancing the user's physical and mental abilities. So hangers and their handlers deal with these baddies.

I'll admit it. I enjoy light BL or any romance - but it must never be at the foreground of the story; it should be there to enhance the story (usually in a fantasy or sci-fi setting). However, I usually just request manga on NG because well, it's manga.

Now here's the interesting part - the handlers are like normal policemen whereas the hangers are ex "druggers". By working with the police to capture other druggers, they get years shaved off their prison sentence. Enter Zeroichi, who just happens to have a five hundred year prison sentence and absolutely no memory of his past life. You can imagine what kind of moral dilemmas hangers go through as they have to capture or kill those who they were once akin to.

Zeroichi's handler is Tsukumo, a soft-spoken and kind young man with a heart of gold. He's stuck with a mountain of debt accumulated due to his now-dead mother. And what's worse is, Tsukumo suffers from the very illness his mother succumbed to.

Tsukumo: "Despite many years trying to fight it, the disease finally took my mother. When she passed away, all I had was the massive debt accrued from all the hospital bills."

Zeroichi protects and kicks ass while Tsukumo is just an absolute sweetheart. The action sequences are so fantastically drawn and I cannot believe that this manga hasn't gotten popular. It's more of a shounen-ai than a yaoi, so I'd recommend this to just about anyone who doesn't mind grown men kissing.

"Hey, don't talk to me like that asshole!."
"And so we became partners and started working together."
"At least, that's how it was supposed to go."

But that's what I love about this manga - it manages to have you enraptured with the story while still absolutely smitten by the tension between Tsukumo and Zeroichi simultaneously. And the aforementioned attraction is not just sexual, but character-driven. Zeroichi treats Tsukumo like shit, but the banter is fantastic. Zeroichi is tall, dark and mysterious - just how some of you like it ;).

Zeroichi is more advanced and powerful than any other drugger ever before recorded - which is why he is so important in helping catch other druggers. I absolutely love the moral struggle Zeroichi goes through as he has to eliminate those who are just like him - addicts; probably people just trying to find a way out of a world gone mad or just plain shitheads

"You know there isn't a single guy who's lasted more than two months with me."

The placement of the speech bubbles is also very well done and it really adds to the story and tension.

I just love both men because:

1) They have great backstories and character development.
2)They are so grumpy! (except sometimes Tsukumo is kind on the inside)
3)The romance I suspect is blooming is awesome! It's a slow burner and it's built on tension, irritation and intrigue. Zeroichi sees Tsukumo as weak. I just love these interactions! And this is coming from someone who has never read a romance novel in her life.

There are so many cool tidbits about the characters and universe we discover - and that's how you do world-building, ladies and gents. Bit by bit, not too much but not too little.

My ship sailed away with my heart. When Tsukumo gets hurt, Zeroichi calls for 24/7 witness protection, which comes in the form of Zeroichi protecting Tsukumo 24/7 and so, needs to live with him, I'm fangirling too much.

Side-not: Another another team of 'bounty hunters' are introduced - both Hanger and Keeper named Hibiki (a pain-in-the-ass know it all ex-drugger) and Hashima is a sweetheart and a bit of a tease. There are not only rivalries and tension between hanga]er and keeper but between couples! I friggen love this! And when you find out about Hibiki and Hashima's backstories I guarantee you'll shed at least one tear for their loyalty and dedication to each other.

And so the baddies get bigger, the romance gets stronger, the world-building more intricate, the humour funnier and the action more packed. I really, really recommend this book to everyone who loves manga. The only reason I dropped a star is that I felt that there is something bigger at play that could have been introduced earlier on.

I really wanted to vibe on this, I mean you had me at "gay manga!" but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

The story and relationship felt just a little too formulaic and rushed tho I do appreciate the efforts.

Additionally the formatting made it a headache to read on digital, might just be something you have to experience book in hand.

Unable to complete reading as text was so small and magnifying only distorted the text more. I've other Kisaragi-sensei's work before and I've always enjoyed them.

I don't usually read yaoi, so I'm not sure what the genre is up to these days, but I ended up really liking this one. It was difficult to read because of the format it was sent in, but I'm not letting that color my judgement.

I really liked the concept, the story and how the characters are growing or opening up together. The action was really cool too. The only start that really started making me feel uncomfortable is the second pair of Hanger/Keeper we meet and how they have to handle the Hanger's need to recharge. Just seemed a bit... :/ not okay to me, until after they were honest with each other.
Anyhow, the story is interesting enough, so I plan on continuing this.

Well, Hanger is more like a light yaoi then anything else and interestingly so more about the plot. Except the plot is going nowhere and is very confusing, since nothing really happens in the manga. What's the point of the terrorists? Everyone is just revenging and blowing up things, but for what purpose? The main character is Hajime Tsukumo, who's a new recruit to fight these drugged criminals and the federal task force uses sentenced criminals "Hangers" to fight along the officers, since Hangers have awesome powers. Of course Hajime and Zeroichi end up finding common ground and quite fast end up snogging. The other pair is having sex and this whole situation starts too soon and then stops. I don't know even why this is yaoi. This could work better as a normal manga. Also, Hanger reminds me of Tactics a lot.

I'm glad Hanger has an actual plot albeit it's somewhat poor, but at least there's a story and not just sex. I've read Kisaragi's other manga and I must say they were better. The art is quite plain and our seme surely looks the part as well as the uke. Hanger is your basic yaoi that offers nothing new, but it's not the worse out there. If you want your boys' love to have a mystical plot, then this could be for you. I felt that Hanger doesn't know if it wants to be a porn manga or not and that weighs the value down.

I’ve recently started exploring manga, although I haven’t read much yet. As a newbie, I thought the premise of Hanger was interesting enough, but the execution of the story wasn’t as strong as it could be.

Set in a future version of Tokyo, the plot involves two young men, Hajime and Zeroichi. Hajime is a traffic cop who is transferred into a special division that involves him partnering as a “Keeper” with a convicted criminal known as a “hanger.” Hangers are humans who have been enhanced by nanotechnology to the point that they can be dangerous to the people around them. If such heavily enhanced individuals commit a crime, they work off their sentence by bringing in other criminals under the supervision of their Keeper. Hajime is heavily in debt because of his deceased mother’s medical bills, so he agrees to participate in the program, even though nanotech doesn’t work on him at all, leaving him extremely vulnerable to the violence he encounters. He’s also becomes somewhat fascinated by Zeroichi and wants to help this strange man with whom he works.

So far, so good. The problem is that there are a few too many repetitive scenes of Zeroichi or other hangers attacking criminals. Scenes that aren’t even particularly well thought out, in my opinion; everybody sure crashes through walls a lot. That takes the focus away from the relationship developing between the two men, which is the much more interesting part of the story. Although even that aspect of the story feels a bit formulaic to me.

The one thing that really intrigued me is the mystery of Zeroichi’s past. He doesn’t remember anything prior to the previous year, and Hajime can’t find any information about any crime he committed. I’m curious enough that I may just pick up the next volume to see how that part of the story develops.

A copy of this book was provided through NetGalley for review; all opinions expressed are my own.

I didnt enjoy this. I think much of the story is lost in translation. I do enjoy manga but just not thus one. Having said this I am sure other readers might find it entertaining.

You had me at the cover. I was so afraid this was going to be a circumstance where the cover is what I was looking for, but the story was gonna suck. It didn't, so I was pumped! The story takes place in a futuristic Neo-Tokyo where advances in technology have created a super-drug that increases the physical and mental abilities of it's users. A new task force has been created to combat these powerful criminals. Hajime Tsukomo is a new recruit in this task force, and he's been partnered with Zeroichi, a hanger. A hanger is an individual who lost control while on this new drug, and has accrued a large amount of jail time. Hangers help in exchange for reducing their sentences. Each hanger experiences an extreme side effect of expending their energies, which largely effects the relationships with their partners.

I thoroughly enjoyed this manga. There were times I thought the mangaka sacrificed plot for relationship building of side characters. I really wanted to spend more time with Tsukomo and Zeroichi, and less time with Hibiki and Hashima (who deserve their own story arc at some point). The art was so good! I will legit buy a copy of the physical book to add to my manga collection - and I can hardly wait for volume 2 to come out in September!

I love BL and manga in general. Sci-fi/futuristic elements are some of my favorites. This should make for a great read right? Not. The translation was pretty terrible. Large chunks of text made no sense at times or were in the wrong tense/form/or even speech bubble. Im sure the mangaka did a great job, I only wish the translated work would show it.

Thank you for the opportunity to read this manga and have it available as an option...but...

Unfortunately, I couldn't get the pages larger than a thumbnail size. The formatting for this document is terrible and there was no way for me to open it in another format or send it to my Kindle, so there's no way for me to read it. Why cram four manga pages into one tiny page?
The premise of this book seems very interesting and other reviews make it sound like a fun read. How was everyone else able to read it? I cannot give an actual review at this time, but if the file is changed, I'd like to come back to check this book out.

While reading the summary, the concepts of a federal agent teaming up with someone who is kept locked up gave me a Psycho-Pass-esque feeling. Then when I read the manga there was a yaoi element added into the story.

The action sequences are few and simple yet they help portray the story being told. This manga is more about the lives of the characters than the crimes itself. There is some sexual content in this manga as expected of the yaoi theme; however, the sexual content is not explicit. I’m not sure how this will unfold in the next volumes as the relationship between Zeroichi and Tsukomo progresses.

If seeing the relationship between two people blossoms isn’t enough there are other elements that have piqued my interest. The first element are the characters. The two main characters, Hajime & Zeroichi, have an element of mystery to them that I wonder how they will unfold. The second element is the concept of Hangers. I wonder at what other characters and Hangers will appear in this series.

Sorry, I guess I shouldn't go by covers, but it is just so hard to resist when there is two hot guys on the cover. *fangirls*

Sadly this one wasn't that good, I dropped it about 1/4 in. It also didn't help it was barely readable, and the art was just grainy. Maybe if both those things were good I would have continued on in the hopes that the story and the characters would get better, but as it is I already had a burning headache and this copy made it worse.

The idea of using convicted criminals to solve crime sounds fun, and I quite liked it. That is one way to get the criminals to do something useful with their lives. Plus come on, two guys in a tiny room? I also had a laugh at how Hajime got all pissy when Zeroichi refused to eat the food and called it crappy. Gee, where I have seen that being said again? Ah yes, so many anime/manga. I get that food wasting is a no-no, but come on. :P

Then it got even worse when Hajime had some kind of magical stuff going on with his blood, and of course, Zeroichi has to save him by blowing up stuff. Oh dear lord. OK OK, it got better when the two kissed (YEESSSSSSSSSSS), but eh, I gave up not that long afterwards. Again, being able to read the book without straining my eyes would be nice.

So nice idea, plus I was definitely shipping Zeroichi/Hajime, but weird-ish story + unreadability = me going to another book to read.
