Genre: Suspense, fiction.
My Rating: 3 and 1/2 stars.
Recommendation: 16 up.
My favorite character/s: The characters were nice. My favorite character was Paige; she was there for Nate, she was a minor character but seemed to support Nate and Grace, she was a friend, partner, back-up. While I enjoyed reading about Nate, Grace, and the others, Paige was my favorite character!
My Verse for Paige is Proverbs 27:6
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.
My thoughts: I enjoyed this book, but I felt like the characters were underdeveloped leaving the book with a lack of depth though it was a nice read.
A Secret to Die For is an excellent Christian romantic suspense book written by author Lisa Harris. Thanks to NetGalley and Revell Publishing for the advance copy.
"A Secret to Die For" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. Detective Nate recently lost his partner and several friends in a bombing incident. He had survivor's guilt and was determined to keep his old friend, Grace, safe. Grace recently lost her child and then her marriage and still struggled with the loss. When she discovers that a murdered client left her clues to stopping a terrorist attack, she's determined to feel useful by helping, even if it's dangerous.
The characters dealt with their pain while trying to stop the bad guys and stay alive. Grace has learned that only God can give her true security, not a man, but she's willing to have a romantic relationship again. Nate feels distant from God because He didn't save the good guys. But he still prays for help when things get bad and wants to regain a close relationship with God. Grace helps him process what happened, but Nate isn't ready to risk loving and losing someone again.
I liked that Nate and Grace were old, close friends and built on that friendship. The story was exciting, but the bank security box sequence just didn't ring true with my experiences, so it took a little while for me to get into the book. But I did enjoy it and would recommend it. There was no sex or bad language.
Grace and Nate working together, his case with Stephen having being murdered, and she was Stephen psychologist. Someone thinks he told her information, now she wants that killer found. With Nate and his job to solve the murder and wanting to keep her safe. A good plot with twist, high emotion, and a good mystery to figure out why. Given ARC by Net Galley and Revell for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
Wow! Another wild ride from Lisa Harris.
As soon as I saw that this book features a character dealing with PTSD, I knew I wanted to read it. Detective Nate Quinn is still dealing with the psychological aftereffects of a bombing that killed 18 people, including his partner. From the first chapter, I loved reading Nate's story and his struggles with faith following such a traumatic event. Harris did a great job depicting this subject in a way that was heart-wrenchingly realistic.
I also loved Grace's character (and her name. <3) and her story arc as she learned to love and trust again after much loss. Both the main characters were incredibly realistic and easy to connect with.
The plot. Whoa! Like I said, a wild ride! This book starts out with a bang, and the craziness is almost nonstop. The mystery was intriguing, and I was kept guessing as to the identity of the true villain. While the subject matter (a cyberterrorist attack on the US grid) seemed slightly far-fetched\futuristic, it was still interesting nonetheless. And the technical aspect, while not overly detailed, was particularly interesting to me.
One thing that I love about each of Harris's books is the strong, realistic Christian themes presented throughout. While that subject tends to get lost in a lot of Christian romantic suspense books, Harris always does a fabulous job of incorporating it very naturally into the story, and I often find my own faith and beliefs strengthened by it.
My main gripe would be that the ending felt very sudden and slightly anticlimactic. After the adrenaline-laced first three-quarters of the book, it just felt a little lackluster. Plus a little more time to wrap things up would have been nice.
But overall, I greatly enjoyed this new release from Lisa Harris and recommend it to lovers of good, clean romantic suspense.
CONTENT NOTE: Recommended for ages 15+. This book is very clean, with little more than a few not-described kisses in the way of romance, and some violence. [People are shot at, run off the road and nearly drowned, kidnapped, etc.]
I was hooked on this story from the very first page. Psychologist Grace Callahan is home alone when a man breaks in to her house. She is able to call 911 and escape through a window. The man follows her and asks her for the “key.” She does not know what he is talking about and manages to get away. On the other side of town, a man’s body is found at an amusement park and Detective Nate Quinn has been called to the scene. The death looks like a suicide, but there are a few inconsistencies. They find Grace Callahan’s card on the body. Years ago, Nate knew someone named Grace, but surely this can’t be the same Grace. Nate and his partner, Detective Paige Morgan, arrive at Grace’s home not knowing about the earlier break in. Once Nate sees Grace, he realizes she is the same Grace that he knew in college. Their past history becomes a part of the story as they work together to find out who attacked her and who killed the man at the park. The story becomes more involved as they soon realize that there is more at stake here than murder. I enjoy a strong female lead character in a book and Grace is that character. She is able to take care of herself even when faced with danger. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
