Kids love bugs, and this book is wonderful! It has tons of information in it, so it should be appealing to older students. I like that it goes beyond the basics!
Bug Lab for Kids by John W Guyton is a basic introduction to entomology, or the study of bugs, geared towards teaching kids. It's not just a book of information, but is packed with information related to all aspects of bug collecting. Several units focus on creating appropriate tools, such as a net, spreading boards, and kill jars. Then follows several units devoted to different orders, such as Lepidoptera, or butterfly, and Coleoptera, or nettles. Each of these has its own set of experiments and/or tasks. Later units discuss other types of arthropods. I even learned a few new things myself! I had no idea pillbugs were not bugs but land crustaceans.
Some of these experiments seemed a bit sadistic, though. Really, we wouldn't be encouraging kids to cut off mice tails, or to throw kittens in an alligator pen, so why encourage them to cut the halteres off of flies or throw moths into spider webs. Humane collecting I do not have an issue with, but those kinds of 'experiments’ I'm against. Thankfully, while many of our cubs were interested in learning about insects, they came to the same conclusions over some of these experiments that Jonas and I did. Recommended for those interested in bugs.
***Many thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
A perfect book for a little entomologist! Lots of photos, facts and hands on activities to encourage kids to discover the insect world all around them. Written in a very easy to read format. My boys love the DIY insect projects!
Thank you NetGalley and Quarry Books for an advanced copy of this book.
I'm not sure what I was expecting when I first saw this book but what I do know is that it wasn't what I thought I was getting - I know, clear as mud, but there you have it. With that in mind though this is a really comprehensive book for a beginner or intermediate budding entomologist.
This highly detailed book looks at safety as well as the identification and collection of bugs. In this respect this book would be an ideal reference book for a science teacher. It allows for an easy integration with occupational, health and safety requirements as well.
The photographs are fantastic visuals and show just how kids can get involved. They accompany clear activities that are presented well and can easily be replicated either in the classroom or at home - yes, we even tried a couple here but they rest will need to wait until spring as our winter weather is keeping most bugs at bay.
A great book for looking at scientific method. Great for children 8+ or as mentioned as a teacher reference book.
Well designed with great information -- kids that like bugs will enjoy it. Wonderful learning tool and a wonderful, fun idea. We recommend it and find it something to look at over again.
Absolutely loved this book, there is so much information about different bugs and how to find them. it also has great ideas on how to make your own equipment so you don't have to spend lots of money buying expensive equipment. There are some great activities for children of all ages,
I will be trying some of the activities out during the summer holidays with my nephew, as he likes looking for bugs.
Definitely worth having a copy if you have children or even work with children.
BUG LAB is a super cool resource for getting kids interested in nature and science. Included are fun photos, illustrations, activities, and factoids about butterflies, bees, beetles, centipedes, spiders, and more. Why, it’s like having Bug Camp in your own backyard. 5/5
Grateful to the Quarto Publishing Group - Quarry and NetGalley for the early copy, in exchange for my true review.

A first rate book that both children and adults would enjoy and learn from. The book is written in a very easily read and understood dialogue, with lots of photographs and information provided in a logical manner.
In this day an age of computers it is nice to have a book that encourages and explains hands on approach to learning of our outside world.
If you have a kid who is interested in bugs, then Bug Lab for Kids is for you!
This book will walk even a novice bug-collector parent or teacher through learning where to start to more advanced techniques on collecting insects to how to preserve them. The book is set up as forty-three labs that kids can complete. The labs start with learning where to look, using sketching as a tool, and the scientific method. Later labs include photographing insects, making papier-mâché nests, creating a pollinator habitat, and more.
Bug Lab for Kids offers a variety of insect-centered activities and will keep kids busy and engaged! Perfect for summer!
Kids are curious. Most kids will at some point be curious about bugs as well. And if your child is scared of bugs this book just may help them turn curious also.
Did you know 95% of the worlds animals are actually bugs. In this book Mississippi State University associate professor, extension entomologist (bug expert), and educator John W. Guyton team up to teach you and your child all things bug.
There are so many illustrations, photos, activities and facts about Bugs in this book it could turn anyone into a bug expert on a childs level. This is not some cutesy story it is true facts. The book teaches you how to dress to find and collect bugs. It teaches safety while finding and collecting, which is very important when dealing with bugs.
The book is broken down into chapters. It has the bugs put into type, it has science projects, t has collection tips and so much more. Great book for kids of all ages.
I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.
