I love coming of age young adult novels. This was such a good read, I’ll for sure be reading more by this author.
I went into this one totally blind and was so pleasantly surprised. I dont want to say too much for fear of spoilers, but this was a sweet romance, and great mystery. I find it hard to find both of those in one novel, but this is it!
‘Even If I Fall’ by Abigail Johnson was an extremely, extremely emotional read—tore out my heart one minute and and warmed it the next, rinse and repeat—and while it put me through the wringer, it kept me captivated until the end. Definitely recommend!
This is such a beautiful book about grief, growth and first loves. This story is perfectly paced and beautifully written. I kind of want to read more books like this but right now I'm in too much of a romance/shifter kick that I can't.
Evan if I Fall by Abigail Johnson is a very emotional roller coaster ride! Brooke Covington brother killed his best friend, Calvin. Calvin younger brother Heath is picked up by Brooke while stranded on the road. Brooke and Heath keep their friendship a secret and they fall for each other, the tragedy pulling them together. I highly recommend this book, if you don't mind a good cry. I will be reading more books by this author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review your titles.
I do appreciate it and continue to review books that I get the chance to read.
Thanks again!
If I could describe this book in one word, it would be "Whoa!' This book is a wild ride from beginning to end. The story begins a year after Brooke's brother has murdered his best friend, Calvin. As you can imagine, Brooke and her family are still reeling from the aftermath of such a traumatic thing. She and her family have been outcast, and she doesn't really have many people to talk to that understand what she is going through. One night, she meets Calvin's younger brother, Heath, on the side of the road, who just may be the person that Brooke needs to help her though this. This is one of those books that takes you on a wild emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. You really can't help but feel for Brooke and Heath who have survived the unimaginable. I don't know want to give too much away because this is one of those books that you really need to read for yourself to see what it is all about. It is out now so make sure that you pick it up! Thank you to the author and publisher for giving me a chance to read this book.
I apologize for forgetting to review this book sooner! This was a great realistic fiction story focused on family and death and tough topics. Perfect for fans of emotional family dramas. A story of siblings and identity.
I could not put this book down. First off, the characters were very well written. The author really connects the reader with Brooke. You can feel every frustration and pain that she is going through even though you haven't gone through what she is going through. And not only that but I actually liked her brother too. It's hard to understand how someone can love a murderer until you actually look through their eyes. The author does a magnificant job showing how hard it is for Brooke to reconcile the loving brother she knows with the murder he comitted, and how she still loves him despite what happened.
Heath is also a very vivid character. Even though the story isn't told from his point of view you can still see the inner struggle he's going through. The guilt he feels that he's interacting with the sister of his brother's killer and the anger he feels but the undeniable bond that's forming between them despite that. I have to say that I very much felt like yelling at him a couple of times and then felt guilty because he's going through his own stuff too. I would've liked to see things from his side a little bit and think it would've been interesting if it had been written from alternating points of view. I felt myself taking Brookes side a lot through the book and it would've been nice to see his daily struggles like we see hers.
And Brooke's best friend Maggie. OH MY GOSH. I totally love her. She has such a bubbly and vibrant personality and always tells you like it is. You also get to see a soft side to her and her insecurities as well. It's a good reminder that no matter how put together a person seems, we are all struggling with something.
The plot line is something I've never seen before. These days every book seems to be a remake of another book. Take Percy Jackson and Harry Potter for instance. Both incredibly good books but if you look at the books and start picking out similarities you'll find that they have a lot in common. (Honestly more than I'm comfortable with.) This book has to be the most original thing that I've read in a very long time. There is not another book like this, at least not that I can tell, and I'm absolutely in love with it. Not only is it original but so thought provoking. It really makes you think about things we tend to ignore.
If you are looking for a book that is going to make you laugh, cry, tear your heart apart and put it back together again, then this is definitely a must read. The things you will learn and start thinking about from this book are so so so (x100) important.
Thank you Abigail Johnson for writing this book.
Slow, very very slow. I kept waiting for some spark, some big reveal, anything to make this book interesting. It was average at best, underwhelming, and honestly I forced myself to finish it since it became quickly tedious.
Such a heartbreaking story, but so well done. This story gave me the same feels as Girl Made of Stars. Beautifully done.
"Even If I Fall" is a rather interesting look on the effect a murder can have on families, a town, and a future. It's a rather good read that delved into those effects rather realistically.
This felt like an honest depiction of a truly horrific event I liked the character development and it felt realistic.
I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
When a murder affects to different families in two different ways, neither knows how to deal with the town is throwing at them. One family is seen as social pariah's, while the other family has become the center of the town's pity. The taking on of grief on both sides of the murder was intriguing and surprised me with how emotional it made me. This book really shows just how grief can affect people and just how long it can have a hold on someone. Such an amazing book!
Abigail Johnson is one of my favorite "This Is Us" readalike authors, and she circulates really well at our library. This book does such a lovely job of combining an impossible situation with lovely characters in a beautiful way; it's going to be really easy to "sell."
So. Good. I was hooked after the first few pages of this story! It is so well written! I liked all of the characters and found them relatable. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this one, albeit quite a few months after its publishing date.

Even If I Fall is an emotional young adult novel that will appeal to teens and adults alike. It deals with relationships, both familial and romantic, in the aftermath of a murder confessed to be done by Brooke's brother. I really enjoyed Brooke's character; she was three dimensional and real. This book is certainly on the heavier side, but well worth the read.
Brooke and Heath's worlds were turned on their heads when they both lost their brothers. Brooke's brother, Jason, is still alive but has been imprisoned after confessing to the murder of his best friend (and Heath's older brother), Calvin. While Brooke and her family face the ire of the small town they live in because of the murder, Heath's faces the pity and loss. Slowly, both Brooke and Heath are drawn to one another--there is a safety in being able to talk openly about the loss they both feel and a relationship begins to form. A relationship they both begin to feel the strain of as Brooke attempts to understand how her kind, caring older brother could have killed his best friend and Heath attempts to bring Brooke, the sister of his brother's murderer, through the small town's whispering and resentment.
If I am being completely honest I struggled with parts of this book because I hurt so much for Brooke. Her brother committed a crime but she and the rest of her family paid for it by the loss of their lives. They no longer could go to school, work or even the grocery store. Brooke kept a job but had a boss that was constantly looking for a way to fire her. Her friends from before turned away from her.She also trapped herself and didn't know how to let herself live and follow her dreams without fear of her crumbling family falling faster without her.
This was a really good book--even with the struggle.
I loved this book! And it was a bit of a surprise because I went into it thinking I might like it but not love it. Now, I'm just glad I've requested it on Netgalley a while ago because otherwise, I don't think I would have picked it up.
I wish the cover would do justice to this story but unfortunately I don't find the cover very attracting and considering the lack of ratings on this book, I can only think this book should have a better cover. Especially since the content was amazing.
Even if I fall is a heartbreaker. I cried a lot while reading this book but then again, I'm a sensible person who cry easily so there's that. In this book, we follow Brooke, a young woman who is the sister of a convicted murderer and has to deal with the after-match. Everywhere she goes, the whispers follow and her family ends up being punished for Jason's crime. There is also a little bit of a mystery surrounding the night Jason killed his best friend Cal. Brooke needs a reason to understand why her big brother which she loves with her whole heart would do something so horrible and she's determined to find out the truth.
She also starts to become friends with Cal's brother, Heath. I really loved seeing their relationship develop and see them talk to each other about what's really going on in their life now.
If this sound like a book you might like, please give this book a try <3.
(Thank you for letting me read and review of an ARC via Netgalley)
I really enjoyed this book. I was hesitant that it would be focused on a romance rather than anything else, but was pleasantly surprised that this was more a book about grief and family than romance. I enjoyed the characters, and was genuinely caught off-guard, in a good way, by a couple of the twists, which I didn't see coming. I enjoyed the writing style as well and am looking forward to reading more from Abigail Johnson.
