This is a cute book. The illustrations are my favorite thing. Even though this is a children's picture book, Simon goes through a lot of character development. It was cute to see how two people, that are very different, can get along so well. It makes me wish I had a friends as a ghost and that ghost are not scary.
This book was super cute. Simon the ghost is looking forward to his very own house to haunt. He has even heard there will be grandparents which as the best. But they also come with a little surprise. This book is great for any time of the year. No Halloween needed. Just a lively ghost story, and a friend.
I read this book myself and then read it with my boys who tend to be scared cats. We all agreed Simon is the cutest little ghost and wasn't scary at all. I liked how it described that as a ghost Simon had certain tasks to do. It makes hearing noises in the night less scary if you think it's just that cute ghost Simon. The illustrations in this book were everything!
Simon is a full-fledged ghost with a job. He is a professional super scarer that has been assigned his first house to haunt. A job he is sure will be easy peasy since older people are moving into the house, people who sleep most of the day which will leave him lots of free time. Time to cross stitch, learn French, and maybe even write a book.
But all too soon he meets Chester, the boy who moved in with them. Oh, no! That means Simon will have to spend lots of time doing ghost chores since kids are the pits to deal with. Or . . . maybe Simon can teach the boy to do the ghost chores for him! That would be so much better than what is currently happening: the boy is curious and just wants to question Simon about everything. But will it be that easy or will Chester have ideas of his own?
This is a story about a very unlikely friendship between a ghost and a boy.
What Concerned Me: I guess I'm always concerned about things that might upset young children. If you have an anxious child, I would not recommend reading this book and having to explain what a ghost is.
What I Liked Most: This is a creative story of friendship with a lesson that sometimes it's not easy to fill the other guy's shoes.
If you follow my Instagram or my blog you already know I’m a huge Cale Atkinson fan and can never resist any of his titles. Sir Simon is fantastic. It’s such a clever, sweet little story facing the most adorable little ghost I have ever laid eyes on. I can’t wait to share this one at Halloween!
Simon gets transferred a lot. He has haunted all kinds of things, bus stops, bears, a boat but he is finally getting his dream posting: a haunted house! The only problem, haunted houses call for more ghost chores. Luckily, a grandma is moving in, they are the best to scare. However, Grandma has brought a kid with her, Chester, who is so pumped to meet a ghost he wants to be a ghost too.
At it’s heart, Sir Simon: Super Scarer is a great buddy story. Chester has to move around quite a bit just like Chester. Together they find a way to make life a little more interesting, fun, and less lonely. As always, Cale Atkinson leave all kinds of little surprises hidden in the book art. You can return to this wonderful little book over and over and you will notice new things hidden in the pictures. I was fortunate enough to read an advanced e-copy from Net Galley but I really am looking forward to see the actual book in person. There are usually even more surprises hidden under the book jacket!
This was such a cute book! Even kids who are afraid of ghosts will fall in love with Sir Simon by the end, and I think adults will appreciate some of the humor in the book as well. I loved the dimension to each page, how the text and illustrations were spread out and not just 1-2 lines at the bottom with a picture above it. The illustrations were amazing and I loved the little details in them that the reader might not catch right away. And while this book teaches a lesson on friendship, it isn’t an over the top, sappy, feelings-y lesson, just one that kids will realize as they follow along with Simon and Chester’s antics. I’m excited to add this book to my library and share it with my students! Thank you, NetGalley for the ARC!
Sir Simon: Super Scarer is another wonderful book from Cale Atkinson. It is adorable and funny and sweet with great illustrations.
Who knew ghosts had hobbies besides haunting? And who knew that there is a “Pyramid of Haunting”? And bears are not easy to scare. These are just a few of the secrets Sir Simon Spookington, “The ghostest with the mostest”, shares with the reader. Simon is excited about moving to his first haunted house, he’s not crazy about the chores. So when Simon meeets the enthusiastic Chester who would love to hang out with Simon, the little ghost gets a big idea. Let Chester do the chores! Let the hilarity begin.
An unlikely friendship with surprising results. Very funny. Should be a hit with my students.
I love Cale's work and this one is no different. It is so cute! Such a great story, not just for Halloween either!
I loved these book!! So much fun. My son lives Halloween and everything associated with it. This is a fun ghost book that can be used to teach friendship, tolerance and responsibilities.
SIR SIMON is a sweet story of a professional ghost who has been assigned to haunt a new house. But things don’t go as planned, as a smart kid comes with the house ... one who figures Simon out and haunts him with too many questions. A funny beautifully illustrated tale of a ghost, a little boy and an unlikely friendship. 5/5
Thank you to the author, Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are mine.

Super cute story about a ghost names Simon who is finally assigned to haunt a house! And best of all, old people live there, the easiest to haunt! Except there is also Chester, a little boy in the house who Simon convinces to help him with his ghost chores.
Fun story about a not-so-scary ghost.
Sir Simon is a real, honest-to-goodness ghost. He haunts all sorts of things and finally gets promoted to house haunting. He thinks it will be a grandparent who moves in, but there is a child as well. This is a fun story about Chester, the boy who lives in the house, trying to be a ghost and not faring well, then Simon tries to be like a boy and fails miserably. They discover that they are very different, but they have some things in common and can still be great friends. A cute story about how you can be friends with people even if they are different from you. It is also a great story to read at Hallowe'en. The illustrations are wonderful, some large, some smaller in a series format. My grandson enjoyed the story and spent hours making scary sounds after we finished reading. Fortunately he did not want to wear a ghost costume.
Cate Atkinson has some great books and this one is fine. The subject matter and artwork was unappealing for me personally.
Sir Simon Super Scarer is a professional ghost and even has his own business card to prove it. " Sir Simon Super Scarer... Ghosts with the mostest" it reads. Now who wouldn't want to hire him?
He has haunted forests, a boat, a bus stop, and strange things like a doll, a pizza and even a potato, just to name a few. Finally he gets a promotion and is assigned to his very first house to haunt and is he excited! Unfortunately, with that stroke of good luck comes some bad news. He will be responsible to carry out ghost chores at his new location, chores like creaking the stairs, flickering the lights, flushing the toilets, hiding and moving things around, or standing creepy in a window wearing old-times clothes. He discovers his assigned house will have old people moving in which is good because they sleep a lot. If they sleep lots his chore list won't be so long and therefore he will be able to spend more free time on things that he loves to do. That's a bonus right?
He is excited to meet his clients but that happiness soon disappears because he discovers there is one old grandma and.... one spunky kid that moves in. Oh nooooo he never expected a kid would be around to spoil his plans and bug him.
He learns that the kid's name is Chester and Chester is over-the-moon happy knowing a real live ( well dead ) ghost lives in the house. He pellets a million questions at Sir Simon Super Scarer and asks if he can be a ghost too?
Crafty Simon has a eureka moment....mmmmm.... yes Chester would be a perfect partner in crime. The kid can perform all the ghost chores leaving Sir Simon to enjoy more and more free time for the things he loves like, cross- stitch, learning French and working on his thrilling novel. What a brilliant plan!!!
Will it work? Unfortunately although Chester has every intention of pleasing his new ghost friend he is not good at haunting and Sir Simon discovers that little Chester has been moved around a lot just like him. Empathy and compassion kicks in and Sir Simon repents and offered to help Chester out with his human chores which he is not good at either. Oh my!! One thing they do find out is that they are very good at being friends together. I love a story with a happy ending and his story does not disappoint.
The illustrations are wonderful and they carry the storyline perfectly. They are animated and full of emotion and detail which I like. The message of the book is positive and redemptive. I highly recommend this book.
I loved the sense of humor in this book and the artwork was really unique. This is a great year round book but would probably be appreciated most near Halloween.
I enjoyed this book about making a friend in an unexpected place. The characters are likeable, and the illustrations are well done.
Oh my gosh this book is adorable! Simon is a super scarer ghost that loves to cross stitch and write novels. He is new to the realm of haunting houses and stumbles into a young boy who is new to the area as well.
Chester and Simon find that they have a lot more in common than they initially thought and the book chronicles their precious friendship. The illustrations are beautiful as well!
Highly recommend!!
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was such a cute and funny book! I thought the illustrations were really good and the story line was adorable. It is a good little lesson book also for children to show them that other people have hard work they have to do as well and that maybe someone else could be going through similar situations as you, you just need to get to know them and find out! Really great book, definitely will add this to my future kid book list!
Simon is a ghost, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a job to do. Simon is a professional Super Scarer. He is regularly sent out to haunt things, people, and houses. Simon has just been assigned to his first haunted house. He thinks this will be an easy job, until he meets Chester, the child living in the home. After a trade-off of human and ghost chores, Simon and Chester realize that life on both ends isn't so easy.
Sir Simon: Super Scarer could work as a not-so-spooky bedtime story or a class lesson about how the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
