This book was alright, but there were two things that really jolted me when I was reading it.
(1) The author used a fair amount of language that was unlikely to have been used in Georgian England, such as "kids" and "you drive me crazy."
(2) A very slight spoiler - Emily is part of a spy organization run by a dowager duchess. This whole thing was kind of confusing to me. First of all, most of what the organization did in this book did not seem like "spy stuff." It seemed more like charity work. Second, I was confused about how this organization was connected to or supported by the government. It seems unlikely that the government would just let some dowager do spy stuff with a bunch of debutantes just because she wants to.
Engaging page turner of a story. The characters are funny and charming. I love it when authors do series and you are able to see characters develop and grow. The series of notes passed back and forth in the cemetery was genius. Wonderful wrap up to a great series.
When I am given an ARC to read and review I always promise to give a fair and honest review. This story had some good moments. I especially enjoyed the reference and incorporation of the brewery explosion which apparently actually happened. That was something I had never heard of.
Emily Moss cannot stand the roguish Alexander Bredon. As this season's most desired debut, she could have any man she wants. Unfortunately, Lady Lancaster pairs her up with none other than the incorrigible man himself.
With mutual dislike and contempt, Alex would rather be doing anything other than escorting the high and mighty Emily, until a secret about her falls into his lap.
This is the fifth book in the series & is the first I’ve read by the author. Whilst the book can be read on its own I did feel lost at the start & until I had everyone 'sorted' I felt I was wading through mud! I need to go & read the series from the start. An enjoyable book of enemies to lovers. The characters were well developed & had plenty of depth, the story flowed well & kept my interest all the way through
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
A great start to this novel sees the two main characters of Emily and Alex, meet as children, and form an instant dislike for each other. Several years later, the animosity between the two does not appear to have waned. However, the two begin to exchange letters without realising that they are writing to each other. The letters give them an opportunity to become friends and share their innermost thoughts. Thrown into this romance is the true events surround a flood of beer, as explained in the foreword, and other interesting events, with Alex also saving Emily.
A sweet romance, which was well worth reading. I received an advanced review copy in exchange for my honest review.
Massive thanks to the author and publisher through netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my ow
As mentioned before while reading this I’ve felt that there are many flares of historical fiction that I adore. Enemy-to-lovers trope? Check. Mysteries to solve with the characters pairing up? Check. Secret forbidden letters ? Check.
And then there are some that don’t work enough. Like the fact that the hero was kind of a sexist asshole to the heroine at the start of the novel. Granted, he owned up to it later on. But still....
And then the whole playing hard to get thing that made the romantic build up a bit slow. There are some parts where I thought they were going to take it to the next level but sadly both had cold feet and stopped short. Out of nowhere. It felt off somehow. Because it happened almost repeatedly.
Overall, I still liked it. It was entertaining and I do adore a bit mystery on the side to not miss out on it.
The main part of the story revolves around Emily and Alex who have never cared about the other person for about the past ten years and how over time they suddenly see the other person in a different light. Several mishaps occur and Alex comes to Emily’s rescue and things change between them. The story also includes the great flood of beer that occurred in London during this time period and the sabotage that occurred and the possible return of a French spy. There are a lot of little side stories that are included in thus book. The book is well written and keeps your attention. I would highly recommend it for a great read.
This was a very difficult story for me to warm up to. Alex and Emily just did not seem to be matured enough for the story. It kept thinking that soon I would turn the page and it will say...Eight Years Later.
I found it somewhat lacking. Writing the secret notes to each other, was interesting but I was still not able to really dig into it. Emily's dislike of Alex was a bit annoying. Usually I am OK with the love-hate - love story lines, as long as the characters are engaging and the story line has a steady rhythm and the chemistry is there. Somehow this was missing for me.
A Rogue for Emily was the first book I've read from Catherine Hemmerling ...it was a sweet Romance ...This is the 5th book in this series & can be read as standalone ... as i ve not read the previous books in the Garden society series , after reading this book i am very inclined to read other books penned by Catherine ...
Emily Moss & Alexander Bredon hate each other since childhood but they come together to work on a case ...Unknown to them they both r secret pen pals exchanging letters without knowing each other identity .... That was a sweet twist in there tale... the emotions, thoughts , outlooks, feelings expressed in the letters makes them realise they love one another ... It was a clean ,pure Romace ...
There is a spy angle which is quite delightful ... a nice book ...
Very fun story. It took me a while to warm up to Emily...but loved Alex right from the get go. Really enjoyed the history too.
I received a free copy from Netgalley for an honest review. A Rogue for Emily was the first book I've read from this author and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. This book is the fifth in the series and while there is mention of plots from another story this can be run as a standalone. I really enjoy the story a historical take on classic You've Got Mail story. There's love their spies and two characters who start off hating each other but inevitably get their happily ever after.
Emily has known and disliked Alexander Bredon since childhood.. She thinks he dislikes women and he thinks she is rude. She starts writing to an unknown gentleman and he writes back. The letters are so sweet and understanding despite them not knowing who they are writing to. Both hope they can meet someone who knows them so well. Due to a letter Emily writes, Alexander knows his penpal is Emily. He has already fallen in love with her, but now he must reveal who he is without her thinking he has deceived her. As they are doing a mission for Lady Lancaster’s Garden Society, they get caught in a flood and almost die. Will this cause Alexander to reveal who he is and will Emily feel deceived? I loved the way Alexander climbed up 3 stories to her window just to check on her. I thought it very romantic. I received this book from Net Galley for an honest review and no compensation otherwise.
It has been a long wait for this next story in Lady Lancaster's Garden Society and was worth the wait. My favorite part of the story is the anonymous letters exchanged between Emily and Alexander. They are sweet and so romantic. Alexander is one of my favorites in this series. He matured a great deal from book one. As with all the books in this series, there is a little mystery. These characters are great and I enjoy reading their stories.
I loved this book so much. It seems to be the conclusion of this series which I truly loved. Each book stands alone. Its about a women who are in garden. This story is about Emily and Alexander who we met in other books. They have a long standing hatred of each other. They become a sort of victoria type of secret pen pals and when Alex figures out it is Emily he realises he loved her. But she has no clue.
once he realises it, he starts to open to her and let her finally see him. It was a really fun, and sweet story and I really enjoyed both main characters. It has a really cool history segment where Alex has to save Emily and it was my favorite part of the book.
I really enjoyed Emily and Alex's story!
After years of hating each other, Emily and Alex must work together on a case. Something happens (don't want to spoil it for you) to make Alex see Emily in a new light. He then wants her to see him the way others do and changes the way he is treating her. Can these two get it together enough to see what everyone else sees, that they are perfect for each other?
This was a great conclusion to an awesome series!!
I didn't like this book because I found it absolutely false, There was something in the interaction between the character, the childish way they were acting around each other and the story of the messages that sounded to my ears absolutely unbelievable and that was enough.
THANKS NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!
