This compulsive read is written from two perspectives, one of mother, Harriet and the other, Charlotte, Harriet’s only friend who’s inattention allows the successful abduction of young Alice. The writer humanizes these two women and I sympathized as each try to maintain some semblance of normal life despite desperate circumstances, their volatile emotions and judgement by peers, journalists, strangers.

I continuously searched for clues as an armchair detective. Harriet’s husband was my first suspect - an extremely unlikeable guy with a dark side and controlling nature who liked to play mind games. But this was too obvious and the author is just trying to throw me a curveball, right? Other puzzle pieces materialized and compelled me to push to the end.

Then begins the questions for each family. You will feel the emotions, you will question your thoughts and finally you will wonder - and - what would I do?

As a mother, this story was hard to read. Can you imagine not knowing where your child is?

Charlotte was supposed to be looking after her three children and Alice, her best friend Harriet’s daughter. She only took her eyes off of them for a second. But when Charlotte’s children return from a school fair ride and Alice is nowhere to be found, Charlotte panics. Harriet is devastated and can no longer bring herself to speak to Charlotte. But as the police bear down on both women trying to piece together what happened to Alice, secrets begin to surface.

This fictional tale had my heart beating and stomach in knots, hoping for the safe return of Alice. Charlotte and Harriet felt like women whose shoes I could easily step into as Perks wrote characters I could empathize with. The women tell this story in alternating points of view, flashing back and forth between the past and present, which I found added to my sense of suspense while reading. Don’t you love a good twist? All things are not as they seem and a couple of good twists are delivered. I won’t say I saw them coming, but only that I sensed something wasn’t quite right and couldn’t put my finger on what it was.

Although the story is a tad slow in places, I still felt suspense throughout, so plugged along through the slower parts. After several uninspiring books in the genre, Her One Mistake was an excellent read.

This was a debut novel and overall, I was impressed! I definitely wanted to find out what happened to Alice. My heart felt for both Charlotte and Harriet with the disappearance of Alice. I could only hope they would find her. I enjoyed the way Ms. Perks told this story; the way in which the characters' pasts were told to the reader.

I was not expecting the twists this book held and this book held me captivated. Towards the very end of this book it felt a little much to me, but I was still able to go along with the story and see how everything played out. And I would definitely be interested in reading more from this author. If you enjoy books that only show pieces of what's happening and letting the reader understand bit-by-bit as things unfold, then be sure not to miss this read!

This was a great fast paced psychological thriller! When i got to the ending I was blown away, how did I not see that with all the little hints leading up to it!!!! The plot was wonderful and i felt it was well fleshed out. It kept me turning every page! Harriett and Charlotte were excellent to read and I immensely enjoyed them as characters! Very very well written!

Heidi Perks is a new-to-me author and I am definitely going to be reading her other books! "Her One Mistake" was good, I enjoyed reading it, and it was engaging for the most part.
The switch between the first person narrative to a different character midway through was off-putting although I understand why it was done. The chapter switches between characters and "Before" and "Now" also worked to create some confusion and interrupted the smooth flow of the story. Some chapters were a little choppy and mixed too many voices and I didn't care much for that. On the whole though, the story was entertaining and the characters did draw me in so that I cared about what happened to them - for me, that's an important point.
If you read a lot of twisty psychological thrillers, by about 1/3 of the way through you'll see the breadcrumb trails lead in two distinct directions....it's very nicely done without giving away the "for sure" end game.
The fact that I will seek out her other books should stand as a recommendation for you to get this one! Enjoy!

About 1/4 way through I'd pretty much figured out what was happening - if you've ever had the kind of relationship Brian and Harriet have, you'll feel the vibe right away so the storylines may lead you in a certain direction right away. I'll just leave it at that.

This was a thrill ride from start to finish. Many times throughout the book, I thought that I had it all figured out. Well, I did NOT!

Charlotte and Harriet are best friends - Charlotte has 3 kids and Harriet has one daughter, Alice. Charlotte takes her 3 and Alice to the school fair, where she loses sight of Alice. Harriet is devastated - a large-scale search ensues to locate Alice. Harriet is so deep in her grief and refuses to talk to Charlotte. As the search continues, buried secrets come to light and the truth is more sinister than anyone imagined.
This was a great book - it switches from present to past and is fast-paced. It is full of twists and turns and very suspenseful! I didn't want to put it down! Wonderful thriller!

This was a great mystery thriller that I really ended up enjoying. There were a couple of twists that I didn't guess myself, but that always makes a book better to me! I felt the characters were well developed and portrayed deeply in a way that made the storyline flow together. I would recommend this book to all of my fellow reader friends.

What do you do when the person who is supposed to love and protect you tries to destroy you? Harriet had a major problem with her husband and desperately needed to solve it. She chose a very radical way of doing so and dragged Charlotte, who was supposed to be her friend, into the middle of it. The book is well written and filled with mystery and intrigue to the very end. Using the reflective tense gives it an even greater sense of doom to come. You will keep turning the pages to catch a glimpse of where the plot is leading you at every turn.

This book was awesome! Finished in 2 days. Lots of twists and easy to identify with the characters. Highly recommend!

Charlotte and Tom are divorced and have three children. Harriet and Brian are married with one daughter Alice. Although total opposites, Charlotte and Harriet are best friends. Harriet is taking a bookkeeping course and asks Charlotte to look after Alice so Charlotte takes Alice and her own three children to the summer fete where Alice goes missing after Charlotte looks away for a minute.

This story starts off very slowly. It jumps between the present and the past and is told from different points of view. The book is full is full of twist and turns and we keep finding out secrets about the characters which help to shape the plot.

I like the writing style of the author. Her writing is clear and engaging and she ratchets up the tension as the book progresses.

Would definitely recommend.

This thriller has everything a good book should have. A good storyline that flows seamlessly from one chapter to another and then when you least expect it - a total surprise.
It was one of those books I did not want to put down, but at the same time I didn't want the story to end.
Charlotte has 3 of her own children and has made friends with Harriet and her only child Alice. She asks Harriet if she can take Alice to the school fair. Harriet is reluctant as she has never been away from Alice before, but she agrees. Then the unthinkable happens, Alice goes missing and despite Charlotte and her own 3 children searching, Alice is nowhere to be found. What appears to be a kidnapped child turns into something much more sinister with a wonderful twist.

Her One Mistake by Heidi Perks is yet another in a long line of psychological suspense thrillers that I've been reading. This one is nicely written with plenty of mystery to keep you interested the whole way through. Harriet and Charlotte are good friends and Charlotte is about to watch Harriet's daughter for the first time ever. Little does Charlotte know that the day will end very differently than originally planned. This book has the perfect amount of characters to keep the reader from getting too confused about what is happening in the plot. The story moves along at a fast pace and has a satisfying conclusion. Read and enjoy!

The book is described very aptly as suspenseful, compulsively readable, and darkly twisted psychological thriller. It is not as simple as it seems based on the description. It is so much more. The book is a lovely description of relationships and the small things that can build or break them. It has the whodunit factor, the psychological thriller bits, the domestic drama angle as well as a whole mysterious angle. You will guess things many times while reading this book and more often than not you will be wrong! This book consumes you, it plays with you and is hard to put down. The author almost taunts you in to guessing things and then goes on to show you how twisted the plot actually is.
The ending was unpredictable and I loved it. The alternating before and current points of view work well for the plot and make it more engrossing. The pressure that the characters feel is relate-able based on all the police questioning. The characters are brilliantly developed and easy incite a strong emotion for. Highly recommend this book!

The plot: I normally put in the whole synopsis but I feel like it is a little bit misleading - it is probably supposed to be! The book started out normally enough but quickly had me entirely hooked, and ended up restoring my faith in thrillers. Long story short: Charlotte and Harriet are best friends, and Harriet trusts Charlotte to take her daughter Alice to the school fair. With three kids of her own to watch, plus Alice, the young girl just vanishes. Enter a large-scale search, ruined relationships, and one total psycho. As soon as I got my first hunch of who did it, I read the rest in one sitting. Absolutely could not put it down, it just kept getting darker and more exciting as it went!

The style: the point of view switches back and forth between the two main women, moving the story along. It went from the present to the past and back again, painting a larger picture of Harriet and Alice's lives. I loved the dual POV this time because two totally different stories were being told, and it kept me just itching to find out what happened next.

The characters: I did like both women and their kids. They are likeable enough and although they stay fairly one dimensional, the unfolding relationships are important and there is good dialogue. I honestly don't have much to say about the characters, the relationships are well described though and the strain is real. There were a lot of random female names thrown out at first that was a little confusing but did not distract.

General impression: This is such an easy 5 stars. I felt the end coming about three separate times, and wasn't right any of those times. If I wanted to put it down after about 50%, I couldn't have. It was truly an exciting and compulsive read, and anyone who likes thrillers and suspense NEEDS to read it. This is a debut novel too and I am so impressed!!

Her One Mistake by Heidi Perks is getting a lot of advance acclaim and its the four and five-star reviews from my fellow book bloggers that made me take a look at this novel which promises to be full of twists and turns.

This was a fantastic, page turning book. I was hooked from page 1.
The author wrote some sensational story lines as well as believable characters.
I was guessing until the very end.
