I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book. Lots of helpful information but read more like a picture book than a non-fiction book. The illustrations were fun too.

This charming little non-fiction book about animal adaptations is perfect to curl up to given the blast of wintry weather we are experiencing. Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate by Etta Kaner and John Martz is a fascinating look at how animals have adapted to keep warm when the temperature outside drops. It is really interesting to read about some of the different ways animals survive the cold. I really love how Etta Kaner provides information about common animals like the fox, polar bear, and honeybees as well as lesser known animals like the tuatara and the guanacos.
We are huge fans of non-fiction in our house, especially The Bear. He will devour any non-fiction book you put in from of him and if it's about animals, even more so. It's a great book to incorporate into any discussion about animals, habitats, adaptations and seasons. The art by John Martz is fantastic, I especially love the fun and humour on each page of the animals acting as humans do when we experience the cold. This is a really appealing book and perfect for any winter weather research!

Right off the bat, the illustrations in this picture book are utterly delightful. They are simple and economical and yet precise and so much fun. The book is nonfiction and asks what different animals do to stay warm, casting each possibility first in human terms (drinking hot chocolate, snuggling, sunbathing, wearing ear muffs) and then answering the question and explaining what the animal actually does to stay warm. Usually the answer is somehow related to the original question. For example, the author asks if butterflies sunbathe to stay warm and then explains that they do, in fact, sit on rocks or logs and stretch their wings to absorb heat from the sun. In other cases, the animal does almost the opposite: "Do turtles jump up and down to keep warm?" No, they tuck themselves inside their shell at the bottom of a pond.

I was impressed with the number of animals the author came up with (more than a dozen) and the variety of different behaviors used by them to stay warm--none of which repeat. The author, Etta Kaner, clearly did her research because the behavior descriptions are scientifically accurate and include the right amount of nuance so that the animals are not anthropomorphized. I also appreciate that she included a couple animals kids likely haven't heard of, such as tuataras and guanacos. The text felt like it could have been spruced up a bit -- it felt a bit dry and wasn't imbued with the same magic I got from the illustrations. However, it's accurate, it's at an appropriate, consistent reading level, and it's clear in getting the ideas across.

Overall, I would recommend this book, especially to parents whose children love animals in picture books but want to learn something in a fun way as well.

With a title like, "Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate?" how can one NOT be interested? This narrative nonfiction picture book is perfect for early learners wondering about nature during cold winter months. Each two page spread asks kids an engaging preview question, and then answers with real-life facts. Where do turtles go all that time? You'll have to read to find out (even I was surprised!). This book is perfect for preK-2 classrooms. The short bursts of information and frequent topic changes will keep young minds engaged.

Thanks #netgalley for early access to this book.

This is such a fun educational children’s book about how animals keep warm in the winter. Since we know they don’t drink hot chocolate, what do they do?
This book looks at the behavior of several animals in the winter such as; Alaskan wood frogs, emperor penguins, butterflies, arctic foxes, pond turtles, and many more.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and handed it to my husband to read next! It was that cute!
I think this is most appropriate for Kinders or 1st grade.
Thank you Owl Kids and NetGalley for this wonderful e-copy!
I will feature this on my blog on December 8, 2018.

Do frogs drink hot chocolate to keep warm? No, but this book will tell you what frogs, and other animals, do to keep warm in those cold months. A fun read for young readers interested in animals, great to read in the late fall and early winter.

Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate?
By Etta Kaner
What a fun book. My 3-year-old and I read this together laughing at the silly pictures, while my 7 year old was more interested in the facts. We enjoyed learning about all the animals and how they keep warm. We even tried to recreate some of their methods of keeping warm by making a bear den, and snuggling together like penguins! I wish that there were some real pictures of the animals incorporated just to see what they actually look like in their habitat. Overall this silly but educational book was a hit for everyone.

Animals that live in cold environments need to stay warm, but how? Author Etta Kaner poses humorous (and sometimes true) questions about how animals stay warm like “Do penguins snuggle with a friend,” and then reveals interesting tidbits how these animals actually survive during winter.

Great illustrations paired with amusing yet informative text makes Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate? a fun, fact-filled read kids will love!

A whimsical look at how other creatures keep warm. Using everyday analogies children are familiar with, the author looks at ways that people keep warm and compares them to what animals do instead. The illustrations are lighthearted, making the subject matter both memorable and fun. #OwlkidsBooks #NetGalley

What a fun book! I found it neat that it went through all the things we do to keep warm. And while some of the answers are obviously "No!", other answers are indeed "Yes!" I always like it when I get to learn a few things. This book has that appeal... for children and adults alike.

The illustrations are also quite delightful. I like how we get the "cartoon/fantasy" version right next to a more realistic depiction of the animals in nature.

Both fun and scientific at the same time, this book is perfect for young readers! The illustrations are simple but well-done, and children will have fun guessing at the answers. It is the type of book that my kids (if they'd had this when they were little) would later want to quiz ME about, after they'd learned all of the facts!

The team of Toronto author and illustrator Etta Kane and John Martz brings a non-fiction book on animal adaptations for young readers or possibly older students struggling with the science concept or new to English. A wide variety of animals is named and their unique way of keeping warm is described. Each description is accompanied by two brightly colored cartoon style illustrations, one that humorously depicts what the animal does NOT do plus one depicting what is actually done. “Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate” would make a great addition to any elementary Science teacher’s classroom library or any other library that serves preschool-3rd grade.

This non-fiction book helps readers understand how animals keep warm. There are questions throughout the text such as: "Do penguins snuggle with a friend?" or "Do butterflies sunbathe?" along with colorful illustrations to support the text. The author also includes animals from other countries, so that all students can learn from the book. Elementary students would love this book!

My kids loved this book! A very clever way to teach young ones about how animals keep warm in the winter. This will be a great book to bring into my preschool class this winter. I love combining silliness and learning.

CUTE! This early reader book captures ways that animals do and not keep warm. A few are quite different - wow! Sweet pictures! To assess; could have props of these animals and ask students if yes or no (or BOTH) as to which animals have their own way to keep warmth in.

A delight!!!

Thanks to Owlkids Books and NetGalley for a treat!

My grandson loved this non-fiction book about how animals keep warm. The question and answer format kept him on his toes as he did not have any idea about most of the answers. Once we read it, he wanted me to read it again, so he would get the answers correct the second time through. Asking a question about an animals sometimes was myths we had heard, sometimes just silly and others were correct. After the question, the answer of yes or no was given followed by some brief facts. The ending asks the reader how they keep warm. the illustrations were wonderful. Cartoon like, showing whatever the text was asking, then what they actually do. A great book for children, using in a classroom when teaching adaptations and just to get children thinking and predicting. A fun book. The publisher, Owlkids Books, generously provided me with a copy of this book.

Kids will love this interactive Q&A book discussing how different species of animals keep warm. I love the cover and how it pulls you into an imaginative but informative take on that theme.

The author tackles these questions and informs the reader how each animal manages to generate warmth when the weather turns cold. She also includes international species and highlights both familiar and unfamiliar animals. The book sparks further discussion of how these creatures adapt and a glimpse of their living habits and habitats.

Personally I like the design of the book. One page asks a question, giving the reader time to think about it and respond. When the page is turned the answer to the proposed question appears complete with visuals and details of that specific animal's way of coping with the chilly weather.

The illustrations are funny and sometimes silly and I know that kids will adore that aspect of the story. This non-fiction book encourages participation and its playful, kid-friendly style proves to be both entertaining and educational. I recommend this book.
