The third in the Josie Quinn series, this book details Josie’s youth and abusive mother as the team investigates the discovery of a 30+ year old skeleton. As they learn more about the identity of the missing girl, Josie flashbacks to the horrors she endured living with her mother. Regan does a great job of intertwining the personal with the professional.
This is a straightforward mystery. Solid, well written, entertaining, but nothing flashy or special. I liked the constant pace. The interactions between the team are well done and it turns out Josie isn’t the only one with horrors in their past.
The ending quickly becomes unbelievable but that’s true of many mysteries.
My thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of this book.
Another winning book in the Detective Josie Quinn series by Lisa Regan. I have read the two previous books in the series and it was love at first read. In this book things get very personal for Josie as we take a terrible journey through her childhood beginning at age six. Though this is the third in the series you do not have to read the previous but you will definitely start reading all the books once you have read this one. Lisa Regan has turned into one of my favorite authors and I will absolutely recommend this book to anyone who loves a great mystery. I give this a 5 star rating and would like to thank NetGalley for letting me read this book in exchange for my unbiased review. Congratulations Ms Regan on a job well done.
Detective Josie Quinn hadn’t been Chief for long, but the support of her two main detectives, Noah and Gretchen were proving vital. And when the discovery of skeletal bones in an area of the woods where Josie used to play as a child was made, Josie’s past suddenly reared its ugly head. Memories she had tried to keep under lock and key for years now threatened to tangle with her and she wasn’t sure what to do.
Belinda Rose was the most brutal of women – and she was Josie’s mother. So how did she die thirty years prior – but her mother was still alive?
As Josie and her team dug into the secrets buried around both the dead woman, and Josie’s past, danger in all forms was dogging her. What was going on? Who was doing it – and why?
Her Mother’s Grave is the 3rd in the Detective Josie Quinn series by Lisa Regan and is another heart-stopping, intense thriller which I couldn’t put down! The absolute and utter evil of one person, and the bitter hatred of anyone else in the picture – outstanding writing by the author. I thoroughly enjoyed Her Mother’s Grave, as I have the previous two in the series, and have no hesitation in recommending it highly.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read and review.
This book kept me gripped the whole way through. This is a brilliant read. This is the third book in the series and I have read them all. I thought that this one is the best so far. This book is wonderfully written. It is full of twists and surprises. Josies childhood is described in detail in this book. It is horrific in places. Her mother showed cruelty that was beyond words. All the details feel so real in this book. I got really caught up in Josies story, both the past and the present. I hope there are more books to come in this series.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
In this installment of the series Josie Quinn finds her self the depths of a new engrossing case. One that hits a little close to home for her. It all starts when two young boys dig up a grave filled with bones of a female. Now the questions begs, who is she? Who murdered her and how long ago?
Between the alternating timeline, Josie’s past is revealed a little at a time. It was filled with heart breaking and awful emotional and physical abuse. We the reader get to see just how resilient she is to get where she is today. There has been some strange things happening in Josie’s life lately. Strange Craigslist being posted in her name and people showing up possibly to harm her. But who would do this. Does is have anything to do with the drug case that she was working one, or the new case of the bones? Or maybe a case of revenge for past cases. As the clues fall into place, it become clear just what is going on.
Of course this story wouldn’t be whole with out a few characters that play major parts this time around. Trinity, the sassy journalist is back and find herself swept up in all the mess that is going on. And Noah, oh Noah, how much I just adore him. Things are changing between him and Josie, but it does get kinda pushed aside with all that was going on. It was still so sweet and if there is anyone I’d like to see Josie be with, it’s him. He does everything he can to keep her safe. He makes for a great detective for sure.
Now back to the story, with some hair raising suspense and some cleverly placed little twists throughout, I could stop turning the pages. The tensions mounts with each page too, leading up one great climax! It made for one fantastic addition to the series. I am curious to see where Detective Quinn takes us next and maybe even to see her and Noah together too. Hopefully there more to this pretty amazing psychological thriller series!
First time encounter with DI Josie Quinn, took quite a while to get into the story as it jumped backwards and forward in time. Captured my imagination midway through with a thrilling end.
The sins of a mother...
After the bones of a young woman, Belinda Rose, are found in a trailer park where she grew up, Josie Quinn is set to perhaps finally know the truth of her past. She had a childhood filled with loneliness and abuse, an evil mother, and many instances of trauma that have left her mistrustful, insecure, and haunted. With each discovery during the ensuing investigation, Detective Josie Quinn and her team find one unsettling revelation after another. Complicated by questions that seemingly can't be answered, by hidden files and secrets that have bound the perpetrators, the case causes Josie to examine her memories and go back to that hated time of her life. Supported by her colleagues, Josie finds that the discovery of the bones is just the tip of the iceberg.
This series featuring Denton Police Chief Josie Quinn is simply one of the best out there! This is the third book, and if you consider reading it, I'd recommend starting at the beginning. I love police procedurals featuring strong female protagonists and, though Josie is as damaged as the rest of the ones typically appearing in genre fiction these days, there is something about her character that I find compelling and relatable. She's loyal, loves deeply and sincerely, and is painfully honest. As the series develops, with each new book, her personality becomes more defined and the characters of her colleagues and friends are also evolving -- becoming people you want to know better. The writing is excellent and the pace is fast, so this is a book you hate to put down. I can't wait to see what happens to Josie next, so come on, Lisa Regan -- get cracking on #4! Great mystery and suspense.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this e-book ARC to read and review.
NetGalley Description
"When two young boys discover human bones buried beneath a tree in a trailer park, Detective Josie Quinn races to join her team at the scene. She used to play in those woods as a child, happier outside and away from her abusive mother, Belinda Rose.
Josie’s past crashes into her present when a rare dental condition confirms the bones belong to a teenage foster-child who was murdered thirty years ago. A girl named Belinda Rose…"
This is the first time I have read this author's work and I think she is likely to become a favourite. This is a well structured read with a strong plot, plenty of twists and shocks and a strong female lead detective. It's a rollercoaster of a story told at a good fast pace. I was hooked from the Prologue. This is book 3 in the series and I am looking forward to reading more Detective Quinn books.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
Her Mother’s Grave – Lisa Regan
I was fortunate to receive this novel as an Advance Reader Copy, in exchange for an objective review.
Josie Quinn is the acting chief for the small police department of Denton, PA. Having recently arrested and jailed a drug dealer, once thought to be a pillar of the community, she has had her hands full with petty nuisances and bogus ‘Craigs List’ ads, presumed to be a result of the high profile arrest. While dealing with one such problem, she receives a call of human remains found in the rear of a local trailer park, which catapults her headfirst back into a life she thought she’d left behind.
As a kid, Josie had grown up in the trailer park, the only child of a cruel and sadistic mother. When the unearthed body is identified as a teenaged Belinda Rose, Josie realizes that the death has even greater implications than first thought – as Belinda Rose was also her mother’s name. So why did the real Belinda Rose die, and who was Josie’s mother before she assumed that identity?
As the investigation mounts, Josie is forced to revisit her childhood and painful experiences that she would rather leave buried. Told in snippets of Josie’s past and present, we learn that nothing is as it seems and, as sometimes the past returns with a vengeance – and nothing will ever be the same…
This was my first exposure to the works of Lisa Regan and it absolutely will not be my last. Full of twists and turns, along with complex relationships, this is everything you could want in a police procedural. I love Josie Quinn and cannot wait to read the rest of the books in the series!! Great read!!
I received an ARC of this book for my honest review.
WOW, it was so good. I could not put it down. I loved it. This author keeps them coming and we are the lucky people that get to read them.. Very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Her Mother's Grave by Lisa Regan that I read and reviewed.
This was the third book in the Josie Quinn series by Lisa Regan and this series just keeps getting better. Quinn is one of those female leads that as a reader you have no choice but to cheer for. She is such a strong woman and a kick butt character that from the first book she became one of my favorites and after reading this book and learning her back story I have nothing but respect for her.
What can I say about this book? It was one of those that I could not put down. I loved the story and I love series and I really hope there are more books to come. This book answered questions about Josie's past and also another mystery that she had to solve. It was awesome drone start to finish and I highly recommend it and the two books that come before it in the series.
I am giving Her Mother's Grave five out of five stars.
Her Mothers Grave is book 3 in the Detective Josie Quinn series and in my opinion the best one so far. Absolutely loved this book and am hoping that another one isn't too far away.
Kids are playing in the wood when they discover human bones buried in the dirt. When those bones are identified as Belinda Rose, Jodie's world is about to come crashing down. Belinda Rose was her mothers name. This investigation is personal and all the things that Josie thought she knew about her mother are about to be revealed as lies. So who was her mother really... and who is she?
This book really shows us the real Josie. We learn about her childhood and all the things that she had to endure whist growing up. She learns a lot about herself and the people that she called her family.
5 stars all the way for me.. thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.
Past and Present collide in this third installment of the Defective Josie Quinn books! Two boys are playing in the woods near their trailer park home when they find human remains. Josie Quinn joins her team at the scene and is immediately reminded of her past, as a child she played in these same woods and grew up in the trailer park where the boys currently live. To make matters more interesting, the bones are that of a young woman with a rare dental condition which makes identifying the remains easier. Josie is SHOCKED when the identity comes back as Belinda Rose. Wait! What!?! That is her mother's name! Josie is naturally intrigued and wants to learn more about his case. Her horrible Mother is still alive, although Josie has no contact with her. Her Mother was abusive and cruel. She hung out with dangerous people and was dangerous herself. Did her Mother steal this woman's identity? Who was the real Belinda Rose? So many questions. What is the connections? Are there any?
Readers of the previous books (Vanishing Girls and The Girls with No Name) know that Josie does not really mention her mother. We know she has a troubled past and cannot tolerate having doors on closets. In this book we learn about her childhood and the horrors she experienced. This book is told in alternating time frames ranging from the present day while the case is being investigated and, in the past, when Josie is a child living in a horrible situation with her abusive Mother.
I enjoyed how some questions are answered about Josie and her issues she has from the previous books i.e. being in dark, confined spaces, closet doors, etc. This book also shows Josie dealing with other issues as well, some of them minor such as a growing attraction to a fellow officer, bonding with her deceased ex-husband's child, and one which is so HUGE it cannot be mentioned! READ this book. Better yet Binge read all of Regan's books!
I have been a HUGE fan of Lisa Regan's books ever since I read my first book by her which was Losing Leah Holloway! From there I went on to binge read several of her books. She has delivered yet again with this book! When I first read Regan, she reminded me of another amazing female Author - Karin Slaughter. Both excel at writing gritty police procedural books with like-able and engaging characters with flaws. As she continues to write, Regan has proven that she can hold her own and deliver book after book after book. Like I said, HUGE fan!
This book has twist, turns and revelations. There is mystery, suspense, romance, sadness and hope all at the same time. Her books are gritty and there will be some scenes which may be difficult for some to read, but life is messy, and crime is never pretty so...you get the picture.
I found this book to be well written and captivating. I can't wait to read more in this series (as well as her Claire Fletcher series). I read this in one day as I tend to do with her books. I was sucked in from the very beginning and had to keep reading to find out the answers to all the questions I had. Fans of the series should really enjoy this instillation. This book will work as a stand-alone novel but I highly encourage those who have not read the previous two books to go back and start there!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I could easily compare this book with a part of the Tour of France. I felt like I started on the top of the Alpe d'Huez and raced downhill taking the 21 hairpin bends without slowing down. That's how fast paced it was and about how many twists and turns the story had.
The family close to you, you know them inside out, don't you ...?
I have not read the two other books and I regret that I did not know of the author before. One thing is for sure, I will read every story will write in the future. I can't wait to devour the next part starring Josie Quinn and her team.
Thank you, Lisa Regan, Bookouture and Netgalley.
This series has honestly become one of my favourites ever, I've never loved a character so much before. Her Mother's Grave is the third book in the Josie Quinn series. It can be read alone, but I would definitely suggest starting from the beginning so you can get the full experience, especially since there's a few things that carry on throughout all the books
If you've read the other books, you'll know that Josie didn't have the best childhood, not much is really given away about what actually happened when she was little, but we knew to expect something from Josie's past soon, and of course, Her Mother's Grave takes us right back to the start. We learn a lot more about Josie, a lot more than I was ever expecting to be honest. Being attached to Josie made it a little hard to read, but that didn't put me off one bit. I couldn't put it down.
Lisa Regan is bloody brilliant at keeping you hooked, every page holds a secret, every chapter ends on a cliffhanger and you're constantly waiting for that huge twist that you know if coming. You never get bored, there's always something going on. It's action packed from start to finish, it's character development is amazing and it's fun. I'm already looking forward to the next book, I cannot wait to see what Josie gets up to next!
If I could recommend one series. It would be this one.
Thanks to the author, the publishers and of course NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC copy in return for a honest review.
Wow! This was a fast read! Lisa Regan is up there with Lisa Gardner and Karin Slaughter for taut tension building. Decades old bones are discovered in a trailer park in Denton, the home town of Chief Josie Quinn. Soon they are confirmed as the bones of young foster child Belinda Rose. There's just one little problem......Belinda Rose is the name of Josie's sadistic mother and she is apparently very much alive. So begins a rollercoaster ride of hidden secrets, jealousy and murder. An excellent read.
4.5/5 stars. Is it possible that I like this book in the Josie Quinn series more than the last? I am loving this series and can not wait for the next one to come out! This book blew my mind! I feel like you could read it as a stand alone book, but I’d still recommend reading the series. I was late to the game and started with book 2, “The Girl with No Name.” I purchased “Vanishing Girls,” book 1, after reading the second book.
This book is suspenseful and I thought I knew the truth but I was wrong until 3/4 of the way through. Even then, I just needed more! I promise this book will leave you on the edge of your seat wanting more. Smooth, fast-paced read with quick chapters. This book will grab you from the beginning. Great characters and great story. Highly recommend!
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC digital copy!
This was really good! I was a bit confused because this was the third book in series so I was kinda lost but I really got into it. The mystery was really intriguing. The characters are awesome! Josie is a great heroine. I loved her immensely. I definitely want to get the books before this so I can understand more! I really recommend it.
Thanks @netgalley for this copy of #hermothersgrave
New to the series, I was apprehensive about not getting well enough acquainted with the characters, especially picking up with the third book. However, Lisa Regan has done an excellent job at filling in backstory and developing story lines in a way that left me feeling as as though I already knew the characters.
When the skeletal remains of a woman are found in the woods near the trailer park that
Police Chief, Josie Quinn, grew up in, she is quickly thrown back in time, forced to reflect on a tumultuous part of her life. As Josie and her team try to uncover the truth about a murder that happened over thirty years ago, Josie navigates the vulnerabilities of her past and tries to overcome the anxiety she has about sharing her story of abuse with those closest to her. Josie tries to remove herself from the investigation as the identity of the victim and the prime suspect become a conflict of interest for her but someone keeps messing with her and drawing her back in. What started out as teenage pranks have become much more serious threats and with the investigation almost over, Josie discovers that the life she had with her mother in the trailer park, was not at all what it seemed.
I would definitely recommend this book. Either as a stand alone or in conjunction with the other 2 of the series. Regan has such a unique writing style with her tight knit plot and story twists. It’s hard to step away from the book. Easily 5 stars!
This is book #3 in the Detective Josie Quinn series. Whilst it can be read as a standalone, it does make sense to read the books in order to get better understanding of the back stories of some of the characters.
This book is told from two different timeframes – present day and Detective Josie Quinn’s childhood starting from when she was about 6 years old. Strategically placed chapters gives us an insight into Josie’s childhood. For those who have read the previous books, you always have an inkling that Josie had a poor upbringing, but you don’t realise how bad until you read this part of the series.
The story begins with the discovery of a woman’s body in woodland behind a trailer park. Josie used to live in that trailer park and used to play in the woods as a child. The body has been there for almost 30 years and when it’s discovered that the woman had a rare dental condition, her identity is revealed as a foster child called Belinda Rose. Josie is left shocked as that is her mother’s name, but what is the connection between the body and Josie’s mum.
I absolutely LOVED this book. I could not put it down and read it at every available moment. Unfortunately work, life and family got in the way else I would have got it finished in one day rather than two! I have read the previous books in the series, so remembered all the main characters but it is all easily explained if you haven’t read the others. Josie’s character is outstanding! This book gives us Josie’s background in great detail and what an absolute horrific childhood she had. I just wanted to give young Josie a big hug, a hot meal and a safe place to rest her head and, to be honest, I probably wanted to give older Josie the exact same! How she managed to become the person she is today with her background is highly admirable. The switches between past and present were cleverly done and each chapter left me wanting more!
Characters from the previous books feature in this book as well, some more than others though. I found Noah extra endearing and loved his “relationship” with Josie – hopefully we’ll see more of this in the next book. I particularly liked one character from Josie’s past and when she meets that person in the present day, it bought tears to my eyes (you’ll know who I mean when you read it). I got so involved in this story that I began to see the characters are real people! - which goes to show how realistic this author’s writing is!
All in all, this was one hell of a book! It has to be the best one of the series yet! The action begins right at the beginning and doesn’t let up until the very end. It may be a difficult read in parts, particularly in Josie’s childhood, but it is definitely all integral to the plot. It is action packed with lots of suspense and it certainly saves the best right till the end. Brilliant story, brilliant characters, brilliant series. Roll on book #4!
