This was a light Victorian romance. It also was quite short.
When one of Captain Edwards Hathaway soldiers asks him for a final favor, Edward cannot refuse. Edward is tasked with delivering a final letter to his friend’s fiancée Grace.
When Grace allows Edward to believe she is her sister, Edward resigns himself to remain in the country until “Grace” returns to fulfill his promise. Meanwhile, the chemistry between Grace and Edward is undeniable.
I did enjoy this short story and would like to read more about Grace and Edward in the future. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a light Victorian romance.
My thanks to #NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I admit this was a quick read for me. It is a perfect afternoon read if you are looking for a fast-paced story. Not a lot of backstory to the characters or fleshed out storyline but a really good read.
It's a love story between Grace and Captain Hathaway. These two characters are brought together by there love and loss of a very good friend Freddie. Though in the beginning, it is their love of Freddie and their sense of duty to him that keep them apart ultimately it's his dying wish that brings them together.
As I said it's a quick read but good. I learned later it was part of a series of stories but even so it is a good stand-alone story.
It was good to read another book by this author! It haa certainly been a while for me. Good storyline. Good characters. I couldn't put it down.
This is the third instalment in Ms Medeiros’ Hathaway series, while part of a series it stands perfectly well on its own.
Captain Edward Hathaway has been entrusted with a letter from the man the man who saved his life on the battlefield. When Freddie dies, Edward is determined to deliver the letter to his saviour’s fiancé.
Grace Kent had intended to end her engagement to Freddie when he returned from the war. Feeling guilty, she refuses to see him Edward when he comes to deliver the letter. When Edward finally manages to meet her, she allows him to believe she is her widowed sister.
With the strong chemistry between them, they are unable to resist. When Edward discovers Grace’s deception he insists they marry much to Grace’s chagrin.
This was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a romance with a hint of steam.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. For more reviews please visit my blog:

I have always liked Suzanna 's books... "The Captain’s Heart " is a cozy afternoon read ...it was okayish .... the story was predictable ... but this book was not for me ....
Capt. Edward Hathaway is given a letter from Freddie Reynolds to deliver to his betrothed. Freddie saved his life and he feels honor bound to grant his wish, but argues that Freddie will probably see her before he does. But when Freddie passes away, a grief stricken Edward is determined to carry out his request.
Grace Kent was saddened to learn of Freddie's death and feels guilty that she had planned to break the betrothal when he returned. She loved Freddie, but as a brother and only agreed to marry him so he didn't go off to war with a broken heart. So when Edward comes to deliver the letter, she refuses to see him. Edward is diligent and finally catches her returning from a ride - but he believes her to be her widowed sister Helen and she doesn't correct his misassumption.
Edward is very interested in "Helen" and wants to tempt her into an affair until "Grace" returns. Grace is equally interested in Edward, no other man has ever captured her interest and she decides to give into her desire. But when the real Helen shows up, she knows it is time to come clean with Edward.
She goes to see him with the intention of telling him the truth, but when she tries, he stops her and they let their desire have full reign. Later Edward realizes that "Helen" is Grace and he has ruined her - he tells her they will marry. He feels incredible guilt for making love to Freddie's love, even though Grace told him that she never loved him as a lover and was not going to marry him.
Grace refuses to marry him, demands he give her the letter and leaves. Edward complies - but this is not over - she will marry him.
The book was okay, it was a little to "intsa-love" for my taste and I didn't really care for Grace at the beginning of the book. The book is well written, packs an emotional punch, has steamy love scenes and finally a HEA. It is the third book in the series, but it can definitely be read as a stand alone title.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*
This was another little gem of a book by Susanna Medeiros. Though the third installment of the Hathaway Heirs series, this title stands alone. Edward is home from the war with Napolean, and he must deliver a message from the man who saved his life to the man's fiance. Grace doesn't want the letter and feels great guilt, so she tries to avoid him. When he finally catches up with her, she allows him to think that she is Grace's sister.
Now normally books based on deception bug me, but since this is a short novella, it works well to propel the story. The quick romance between Edward and Grace is both hot and sweet. Then Grace's sister then arrives home...oops. Can things possibly work out? Perhaps, and with a little help from deceased fiance Freddie! This was a satisfying, lovely novella.
During the Battle of Waterloo Private Freddie Reynolds saved Captain Edward Hathaway from a sabre thrust but then Freddie is shot & loses a leg & dies so Edward must live with the guilt of having survived and is determined to fulfill Freddie’s dying wish which was to deliver a letter to Grace Kent his fiancée. However Grace is also coping with the guilt of knowing she only accepted her childhood friend’s proposal of marriage so he wouldn’t go off to war with a broken heart.
A very enjoyable novella that I read in an afternoon. It handled the topic of survivor’s guilt very well & took me through a gamut of emotions. Edward & Grace were well portrayed & for such a short story had plenty of depth of character. The story flowed really well & held my interest throughout. There were misunderstandings & reticence to move on all of which added to my enjoyment
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I have read other works by this author and generally enjoy her stories. However, I did not enjoy this story as much as I'd hoped. First off, it's a novella, which are reads that intend to skip. They're usually so short that everything seems rushed, including character development and the romance itself. This is what happened in this read. It felt like Grace and Edward escalated from meeting to falling in love way too quickly to be believable. This made the read hard for me to enjoy and buy into. That aside, the writing was great and I'm still looking forward to other reads by this author. This one, however , was a miss for me.
The Captain’s Heart
Third in the Hathaway Heirs
by Suzanna Medeiros.
A promise made to a dying man Captain Edward Hathaway is honoured bound to see it through. Deliver a letter to the mans fiancé and go on with his life, battling his never ending demons.
Grace Kent loved Freddy as a brother nothing more, his request to become his betrothed as he goes of to war was accepted. Things never turned out as planned and instead Freddy dies at war and Captain Edward and Grace are having feelings for each other. But with feelings Edward has guilt as well.
A fast paced read full of emotions and chemistry. Loved Edward he’s a man of integrity and honor. Grace and Edward had ups and downs the chemistry was realistic and loved the way things just worked out for them. I really recommend reading the book even though it’s part of a series it’s easily read as a stand-alone..
I recieved a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
This was Grace and Edward story. Him a captain in the military and Her a lady engaged to his dead friend. The book started on a misunderstanding between the two leads. There was a lot of guilt involved in this story for diverse reasons. All in all this was an easy, short, sexy read.
Thanks to the publisher for this copy in return of an honest review.
The Captain’s Heart by Suzanna Medeiros is book Three in the Hathaway Heirs series. This is the story of Captain Edward Hathaway and Grace Kent. This can easily be a standalone book.
Edward at the Battle of Waterloo was saved by a man who died because of his heroic sacrifice had a dying wish that Edward goes to fulfill. This leads him to Grace who was a friend and a promise women to that man. Although Graced cared for her friend very much she didn't love him in a romantic way but did agree to become his wife if it would help him when he went off to Battle. But now Edward is here letting her know of her friends death and wanting to fulfill the dying wish she finds that she does have romantic feeling for Edward.
Good Quick Read!
I really enjoyed this quick read by Medeiros. Even though is was short, I didn't feel like the romance was rushed at all. I really enjoyed both characters and kinda wish that she had done a full length story for them. I'm excited to see what Medeiros comes up with next!
This was a short but engrossing read that I really enjoyed. Two people, Edward and Grace, both felt guilty for different reasons. They were attracted to each other but the more they met, the more they felt the guilt. What difference will it make when Grace admits her lie? This story was an ideal read for a relaxing afternoon or evening. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Captain Edward Hathaway is an honorable man. It is hard to lose a fellow soldier but the least he can do is deliver a letter to his friend's betrothed. Grace loved Freddy but was not in love with him. When Edward tried to deliver the letter, there is a misunderstanding and he mistakes Grace for her sister, Helen. Instead of being honest with him, she accepts an invitation. Feeling that she must tell him the truth, she goes to his house to confess. Before she can, something happens and he tells her that she will marry him. Grace doesn't want him to marry her to do the honorable thing, but for love. He feels that he cannot love her as it would be wrong. Then, there's the letter. It hasn't been read. Will it make a difference? I love all of the Hathaway Heirs series.. This one is no different. I love the chemistry between Edward and Grace. The way everything comes together was great. Love this author. I received this book from Net Galley for an honest review and no compensation otherwise.
