I am very grateful to Netgalley for providing a copy of this book to read and honestly review.
Whilst I do not in any way consider myself an expert on Sherlock Holmes, i have had the enormous pleasure of reading everyone of the great detectives "Official" cases as written by his faithful companion Doctor Watson in the guise of the brilliant Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, i have also read numerous books featuring the world's first and of course best, and certainly most original "Consulting Detective" . This book rates very highly with regards to the originals in feel and style, and is a very entertaining mystery and one to which I am very pleased to say I solved before the great man divulged all to his faithful sidekick Watson.
The game is afoot.
So I suggest you enjoy this delightful engaging little read.
Dr. Watson decides that Holmes needs a holiday, so off to Keswick they travel. Arriving just in time for a headless body to have been discovered. Holmes happily decides to investigate.
An enjoyable mystery, keeping my interest until the end.
A quick and easy read which very closely echoed the writing and plot style of Sherlock Holmes stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle.. The provision of a few pages from The Mystery of the Bbroken Window, and from A Reflection of Evil at the end of the book served to wet my appetite for more of William Todd's take on Sherlock Holmes.
NetGalley Description
"While on a well-deserved holiday in the Lake District to get away from the toils and troubles of London, Holmes and Watson find no respite. As soon as they exit the train they hear news of a grisly murder making its way around the murmuring commuters. A local aristocrat, Mr. Darcy, has been found missing his head!"
Thoroughly enjoyable read, very in keeping with an original Conan Doyle. The language and structure are true to formula and it is a well told tale wth Sherlock and Dr Watson engaging in the expected verbal exchanges. Well planned little mystery, maintained my interest till the end and kept me guessing.
Thanks to NetGalley and Books Go Social for the ARC.
Love this book - it really fills my expectations of the books written as a pastiches. This book is pretty close to Sherlock Holmes that I became happily lost in it - only one slight jarring note was Watson, he was just too, too...... - just not Watson enough. If you like Sherlock Holmes you will enjoy this, a good mystery that keeps you reading till the end.

She believes the intruder to be the murderer of her husband who is now after a large sum of cash she keeps in the house safe. Unsure if the would-be thief is the murderer or an opportunistic burglar, Holmes devises a plan to catch the burglar, all the while investigating the murder of Mr. Darcy. Follow Holmes, Watson, and the local constable, Mr. Wickham, as they untangle the mystery surrounding a Murder in Keswick.
My review: A modern re-telling of a beloved Sherlock Holmes classic. How could I resist? Yes, we all know that this is not one of the beloved Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories, but what a joy to read nonetheless. William Todd does a fantastic job with this story. In typical Holmes and Watson style, the suspects are eliminated one-by-one. This is a delightful little mystery, and I was kept guessing right until the very end.
Many thanks to BooksGoSocial and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a quick little read, much like some of Conan Doyle’s original Holmes stories. Characters of Holmes and Watson seem very much in keeping with the originals.
