As a companion to Doodled Dogs, Gemma Correll's Doodled Cats is just what it sounds like--a guide to creating adorable cartoon cats. We won't be purchasing this for our small library collection, but it would make a great gift or purchase for someone who enjoys doodling with some guidance. Super cute book.
This was a great fun and educational read. Me and my children (aged 8 and 9) loved drawing the fun cat doodles together.
Funny gift for the catlady in your life, especially if she likes drawing. Though it can hardly be called a book on how to draw, the exercises are fun. I did find it rather short and think there could be a couple more drawings and exercises.
What a SILLY fun book. While no one NEEDS to doodle cats, I am firmly behind the idea that everyone should know how to doodle one given the prompt in an impromptu pictionary game. The directions were clear and concise, yet blatantly encourage the mind to explore and be adventurous. When opening my page of test doodle cats, aiming to get to another note, my coworkers "oohed" and "ahhed" asking if I really drew them, pushing this to even more of a success since they took little to no time to do, and managed to impress many.
I'm a sucker for Gemma Correll, so when this title appeared on Netgalley, I couldn't resist checking it out. It's a very cute book combining some of Correll's cartoons and drawings with pages that allow the reader to doodle their own little cats -- my only complaint was that it's pretty darn near-identical to Doodled Dogs. Cartoonists gotta make a living somehow, though, and I can respect that.
The first time I saw Gemma Correll’s work was on a button which had a cat lying on its back instructing you to pour the coffee straight in. I loved it. Naturally I had to take a look at Doodled Cats. I can’t draw - anyone will tell you this - but I had tons of fun following Gemma Correll’s instructions and prompts. The results were cute, funny and not nearly as shameful as I feared. It was extremely relaxing to create doodles based on my cats and those of my friends. It was a wonderful way to destress. Will you become a professional artist with Doodled Cats? No, but you are guaranteed to have fun, smile and laugh. In this day and age that is enough of a reward.

Doodled Cats/ Doodled Dogs by Gemma Correll are interactive art books that encourage the reader to draw in them. Each is divided into four parts. Part 1 is all about the animal in question, including humourous factoids, signs you are a cat/dog person, and types of cats/dogs. Part 2 teaches how do doodle specific breeds. Part 3 is about doodling anthropomorphic animals and animals with clothes or costumes. The fourth and final section gives templates and prompts for getting creative.
Overall, I enjoyed these books. My cubs enjoyed them moreso. I wasn't a particularly huge fan of this art style. It isn't bad, just not my cuppa. My cubs adored them though! I wish there had been more step-by-step selections. Nicky and a few of the others have great free-hand and can use the completed picture to go by. I liked the cat one most, being the cat person that I am. I loved the sleeping cat, and the cats in boxes.
***Many thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Thank you, NetGalley for the preview of this Digital ARC.
This is such an adorable book for cat lovers of all ages. I have always been a fan of Gemma Correll and I am so happy that I requested this book.
This was a sweet little book on cats! With both silly cat lists and cartoons as well as easy to follow instructions on doodling cats this book is a definite win for artistic cat lovers of all ages!
THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING!!!!!
I have always been a fan of Gemma Carrell, but now I am obsessed! I have never had so much fun with an interactive/how-to book before! I love everything about it! From the cats, to their hilarious poses, to the fun directions, to the fact that its from Gemma Carrell. Thanks to this book, I drew a super fancy cat on my friends birthday card. I simply can't say enough fun things about it! GO out and buy it now please..... and get the Doodled Dogs while you're at it!
I have received a much appreciated digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
What a fun book for all cat lovers! I'm not an artist but who doesn't like to doodle? Thanks to this book, I have advanced from my lifetime of typical flower doodles to my beloved cats. LOL
The author makes it so simple and the various expressions you can draw on the cats made me smile. And there are different breeds of cats to draw, all so easy to do. Plain cats to fancy cats, you decide how to fix them too.
I already have plans to give a copy of this book to a special person who loves to draw and is a cat person. I know she will love it. It makes a purrfect gift!
Doodled Cats by Gemma Correll is an adorable book for kids or cat lovers of any age. From the title you may think it is a book solely on drawing cats, but not so! This book has guided illustration, of course, but it also has cat facts, cat comics, and cat activities to do in the book itself. Even an adult will chuckle at the cat cartoons. As someone who is not an illustrator, the directions on how to draw cats and the suggestions of what to add to the cat drawing are hugely helpful, so I can add to my Ed Emberly drawings I can presently do. Those I actually did learn as a kid. If you love cats or drawing.... pick the books up, give it to a beloved child and then borrow it back, so you can practice!
Doodled Cats by Gemma Correll
Who hasn’t found themselves doodling on the side of a piece of paper at one time or another? When I saw this book I knew it would be fun since I am definitely a cat person. The drawings are more cartoon and fun than realistic but give creative ideas for embellishing, anthropomorphizing and even patterning felines. I might even try the idea of how to create a mug of my own with a cat doodled on it.
I can see this for children or for adults but it would not be for someone wanting to draw realistic felines. There is also scientific information about facts that I found rather interesting.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

What a fun book. Enjoyable for both children and adults. Create your own cats and create doodles based on the cats in the book.
I had previously read Gemma Correll's Doodling for Cat People and thoroughly enjoyed it, hence why I requested Doodled Cats. A second helping of adorable cat drawings? What's not to love! Like the first book it was incredibly charming and made me want to draw cats - and more importantly made me believe I could draw cats, and no matter what they turned out looking like it would be OK. Highly recommended for all the creative cat lovers in your life!
I received a digital ARC from the publisher via Netgalley.

Thank you to Netgalley, Quarto Publishing Group, and Gemma Correll for providing an electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
After having so much fun with my copy of Doodled Dogs, I wanted to check out Doodled Cats as well. This book is worth purchasing just for Gemma Correll’s drawings which are so funny and display so much personality. With just a few strokes, Correll can make cats happy, sad, snarky, or content.
The format and structure of Doodled Cats and Doodled Dogs is similar. Doodled Cats has four parts--Part I: All About Cats (the cat-toid spread is very wry but I learned some new information about cats, too), Part II: Doodled Cats Step by Step, Part III: It’s a Cat’s World, and Part IV: Cat Doodle Templates. The Bonus Project describes how to make a doodled cat coffee mug and is the same bonus project in Doodled Dogs.
My favorite section presents the step-by-step drawings. Correll has written instructions paired with drawings, and in each drawing what you are supposed to do is in red and what was done in a previous stage is in black. The instructions are easy to follow and definitely fun. Even though I am an atrocious artist, my doodled cats have a cuteness about them. (But boy, the Sphynx was hard for me!)
Sample doodles show cats in hats, cats in clothing, anthropomorphic cats, cats doing activities, and, of course, cats in boxes! Several pages have “plain” cat doodles so that you can decorate them with the accessories or patterns you choose.
In pages that make me laugh out loud, Correll collects classic cat-dog illustrations paired with perfectly hilarious captions. Perhaps my favorite has one of Correll's famous pugs saying to a cat in earmuffs, “Will you be my girlfriend?” “Can't hear you,” replies the cat.
I have purchased several how-to art books, and Correll's are the only ones I’ve read where I’ve had lots of fun with the text and activities. Doodled Cats is perfect for so many people: Gemma Correll fans, cat lovers, and people who enjoy doodling/zentangle books.
This is a nice book for those who want ideas and beginner's knowledge for doodling cats. I enjoyed the variety of examples and prompts which helped it feel fun without being repetitive. Both the cat and dog books were really cute and would be great for a wide audience.
I'm not a good drawer, but I do love a good doodle. I also love a good cat. You get two for the price of one with this. Very clever, very fun. It offers many different ways to doodle cats, along with little notes and lots of humor for all of the crazy cat ladies in our lives. Ourselves included...
I love Gemma Correll's illustrations and am happy that I can now attempt to recreate her style thanks to this book.
Doodled Cats: Dozens of clever doodling exercises and ideas for Cat People by Gemma Correll is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. This is such a fun book for any age. Lots of cartoon cats, just being their proud selves, and lots of fun facts about cats and cat owners, LOL. This also shows the reader how to make these cute cats, the accessories, and more yourself. It is a delightful book that will bring out the doodler in everyone. So cute!
