An absolutely adorable book for young children about size. I loved the soft colors and beautiful illustrations. This would be especially stunning in a soft cover board book. I'll be picking up a copy for my nephew.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a free digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The illustrations in this book are so cute. The story is fun showing the size between the parent an the child.
This was an easy to follow book with some great images. I liked the idea behind the story and I am sure it will be a great hit with my young daughter too. 4 stars from me for this one.
just the Right Size was a cute picture book for younger children! The pictures of the animals are cute! It was a nice story about the difference between big and small. And there was a nice surprise at the end of the story!
Beautiful storybook with amazing illustrations. Recommend to young children or anyone young at heart. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Adorable and interesting! Educational as well. It will keep your child's attention! Simply adorable. Consider this as a gift for your loved young ones and maybe donate a copy to your local library. Remember, Christmas is really right around the corner!
While the illustrations were adorable, the flow of the book was challenging. This books would difficult for some readers to get through.
I like a factoid followed by another factoid.
Did you know that ---A--- is small enough to ------
---B---- is not
But B can --------
Water color representations of different animals, their comparitive sizes makes for fun scale comparisions. If you have seen a man next to whale, then you can only wonder.
The formatting for this one made it difficult to read, but we were able to grasp the gist of it. The wording was also weird and very redundant. I know it's a children's book, but even my son asked me why they kept repeating the same phrases. If the author had left out all of the sentences ending with "is not," I believe the story would have flowed more smoothly. For example, "A kitten is small enough to fall asleep in the flowers. An ostrich is not." Then the book continues with what an ostrich is big enough to do, and so on. If it had been written a little differently, I think this book would have been an excellent example of opposites and why it's okay to be both sizes.
Just the Right Size by Bonnie Grubman is a charming children's book that teaches size concepts, and latent concepts of self-hood, such as everyone is good at something, and everyone has niches they snug into. From whales to snails, everything is just the right size for its place in life. Most important is the final lesson- that everyone is just the right size for a hug. My cubs and read this together, and enjoyed it. It's perfect for young kids who may have short attention spans. The watercolour artwork is lovely, and soothing to the eyes. No jagged shapes and lines to wake the mind up, meaning a good bedtime read.
***Many thanks to Netgalley and Clavis Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This unique look at big and small is a please for the eyes. Each page starts with Did you know something is too small or small enough for something else. Then it is followed by Something is big enough. It used comparisons of animals and their actions like eating leaves and landing on trees to help the reader understand big and small.
Little ones learn about comparison with this book! Each animal has it's own abilities to do unique things that some other animals cannot do. It subtly introduces the opposites of big and small. I love all the animals included which encourages animal recognition. Beautiful illustrations make this book even more awesome!
'Just the Right Size' by Bonnie Grubman with illustrations by Suzanne Diederen is a reassurance for those of us who think we are too big or too small.
Through a series of juxtapositions, we meet a series of animals both small and large. A lady bug can land on a branch. A giraffe can not, but is large enough to reach the tree. Through the other animals like a kitten, a moose, an ostrich and others, we see that some are small enough and some are large enough.
The message that the reader is just the right size should be of comfort. We are all just the right size for a hug.
The illustrations are soft and the animals are all smiling. The illustration style had a sort of Golden Book style that I really liked. The story is a good length for squirmy toddlers, who will learn about different animals and maybe learn that they are just the right size.

Very short and sweet with a feel good moral to it. Very cute little illustrations too. Definitely one you can enjoy with your little ones again and again.
This book shows animals of various sizes and does a comparison of the positives on both sizes of the spectrum. There are positives to being big and positives to being small. The illustrations were soft and cute, but not too cute. I liked the message and thought the illustrations matched well with them. The tie-in with the family at the end was a nice touch.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Clavis Publishing for my unbiased opinion of the book. This book was delightful! The pictures, story, and the meaning behind the story worked its magic on me!!!! The story was well thought out and will become an instant classic! I can’t wait to purchase this book for every little kid I know!
Are you looking for brand new children's books about big and small? Bonnie Grubman's Just The Right Size is the perfect 2018 animal picture book. With characters that you just want to cuddle right off of the pages, learn Goldilocks-style what is big enough, small enough, and just right.
Illustrated with beautiful pastel watercolors and colored-pencils, Diederen captures the playfulness of this brand new concept book. Beginning with a ladybug that is just small enough to land on a tree branch, young readers learn that while a giraffe cannot accomplish a similar feat, a giraffe can naturally reach the treetops. Kittens sleep in flowerbeds as elephants cover their young from the rain. Mice can hide anywhere while giant moose are the perfect size to romp in the snow. Dolphins may not be able to gently glide through the seaweed like a goldfish, but such large mammals can take you for a swim. In the end, no matter how big or small you are, everyone is always the right size for a hug. Cue the audible, “Awwwwww.”
Written for pre-k to second grade, Just The Right Size teaches children about size, specifically opposites of big versus small. Readers also learn more about animals and their natural habitats, capabilities, and lifestyles. With adorable illustrations and well-spaced text, this is the perfect beginner reader picture book. Notable is the repetitive concepts and bold letters for ‘big enough’ and ‘small enough.’
My one qualm with this story is the opposing concept, “A beaver is not; A mother elephant is not; etc.,” meaning they are not the right size. The English major in me prefers a complete sentence. The text should read: The beaver is not small enough. A mother elephant is not small enough. Ending a fragment and incomplete thought with a period makes this uncorked writer cringe. Please, please, please, lets not teach poor grammar to children from the start.
I can, however, let this small fault slide into the abyss of sheer cuteness. I could look at those elephants and the hedgehog all day. I appreciate the multicultural family at the end, too.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Clavis for providing me with a free ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Just the Right Size is a very cute about different animals all being just the right size for what they are meant to do (a bunny is small enough to stay dry under a baby elephant; a mother elephant is big enough to provide shade for the baby elephant). The book ends with that no matter how big or small you are, you're just the right size for a hug.
This is cute and is long enough that toddlers will understand and recognize all of the different animals. The overall message is that you are the perfect size for what it is you are meant to do, which is a great message for kids of all ages to hear as often as possible.
I'd recommend this book for kids ages 2-4.
I'm sure in print form that Just the Right Size is formatted correctly, but in e-book form, it doesn't flow as it should and the lines are quite jumbled as you move further into the book.
I feel like Just the Right Size would have been more memorable if the sentences didn't end with the same words each time. Make it a bit more whimiscal with some rhymes, or even alliteration that attributes to the first letter of each animal. I do love the premise of the book in that everyone is pefect just the way they're made, but I think the delivery could have been better thought out.
Just the Right Size is the just the right book to talk about how everybody is just right the way they are. As the book progresses from one animal to the next, the reader quickly learns that while we can't always do everything, there are things we can do, and we can do them just right. The story is predictable enough for young readers to follow along, but with some surprises to keep them guessing. The illustrations are well-done, and the story ends with a happy ending that sums up the story perfectly. This book would be a lovely to any public or home library collection.
